Our experience with the AS1

The firmest out of Amerisleep’s mattress line, the AS1 is an all foam mattress that is made to provide support and pressure relief to those who sleep strictly on their backs and stomachs. A great number of people prefer hard mattresses to sleep on and Amerisleep made sure to include an extra firm option to their lineup.

Who should buy the AS1?

  • Strict back and stomach sleepers
  • Those who prefer to sleep on extra firm mattresses
  • Those who suffer from chronic back pain and need firm support
  • Those who prefer all foam mattresses

Firmness

The AS1 falls on an 8-9 on a firmness scale of 10 to 10 with 1 being the hardest. Though definitely not rock hard as one might imagine an extra firm mattress to be, we can safely say that the AS1 mattress is one of the firmest mattresses we’ve ever tried (and we have tried many). Don’t get us wrong though, even with its extra firm surface, the AS1 provided pressure relief and support for the whole body.

It just means that those who sleep strictly on their side and even some combination sleepers will not get the relief that they need, especially on their shoulders and hips, which are the main pressure points on side sleepers.

For sleepers that are heavier set, however, the AS1 may feel a tad softer. And for those who are more petite, this mattress may feel extra, extra hard. I am 62kg stomach sleeper and sleeping on this mattress was a bit too firm for my liking. That said, we can see how this mattress could cater to those who love their firm surfaces and those who absolutely detest the feeling of being swallowed by a bed.

Those who share a bed will find that the AS1 has little to no motion transfer. I share a bed and not once did I feel even the smallest of movement coming from my partner.

As for edge support, once again the firmer mattress surface comes into play. Memory foam mattresses in general have good edge support due to its denser construction and the AS1’s edge support is excellent. I sometimes find myself sleeping on the edge of the bed and I never felt any danger of slipping off when laying on the AS1.

Construction

Traditional memory foam has a tendency to “swallow” sleepers as they lay on top of the mattress. This is because memory foam is meant to contour and cradle the body. This, in itself, is a good thing but aside from trapping body heat, this also means that sleepers may feel as though they are sinking into the bed which makes it hard to switch positions. Amerisleep sought to remedy that by designing their very own memory foam alternative called Bio-Pur which they use in all of their mattresses.

Bio-Pur is made from renewable, plant-based oils and is CertiPUR-US certified which means it is low in VOCs. It features a large, open cell structure that allows air to flow freely throughout the mattress to prevent heat buildup. Regular memory foam can be notorious for trapping heat. We noticed that there was very little off-gassing coming off the AS1 and we attribute that to Bio-Pur’s more natural components. If this bothers you, you could leave your new mattress to air out for a day or two upon unboxing.

Bio-Pur also has a faster rapid response rate compared to normal memory foam which means sleepers can easily shift positions without feeling as stuck in any way. Sleeping on a firmer surface such as that of the AS1 mattress also allows sleepers to switch easily between different sleeping positions as they are not sunk in. A firm mattress surface also helps hot sleepers sleep cooler and I got to test this out for myself just very recently during a crazy heat wave in my area.

The AS1 is made up of only two layers – 2 inches of Bio-Pur memory foam and 8 inches of another one of Amerisleep’s proprietary foams, Bio-Core foam, a high density polyfoam alternative. Aside from being Amerisleep’s firmest mattress, it is also their thinnest mattress, making up a total of 10 inches. Some people may prefer thicker mattresses. We suggest looking into Amerisleep’s other mattress offerings.

The two layers are encased in a soft, breathable mattress zippered poly-blend cotton cover that’s removable and machine washable. This makes it very convenient for any spills or accidents. We do recommend using a mattress protector for every new mattress you purchase as this extends the lifespan of your mattress.

Sizes

The AS1 comes in 6 different sizes and measures 10″ in thickness. The AS1 mattress is compatible with most bed frames and bases, including an adjustable bed base.

  • Twin – 38″ W x 74″ L x 10″ H
  • Twin XL – 38″ W x 80″ L x 10″ H
  • Full – 54″ W x 75″ L x 10″ H
  • Queen – 60″ W x 80″ L x 10″ H
  • King – 76″ W x 80″ L x 10″ H
  • California King – 72″ W x 84″ L x 10″ H
  • Split King – 38″ W x 80″ L x 10″ H (x2)

Durability

All of Amerisleep’s mattresses are made in the USA with US sourced materials. They are backed by a 20 year warranty, which is significantly more substantial than most warranties from other mattress brands. Being a fairly new company, we have yet to see a complaint of an Amerisleep mattress falling apart. Based on 725 verified reviews, the AS1 currently holds a 4.75 out of 5 stars rating.

Amerisleep offers a 100 night risk free sleep trial for all of their mattresses. They also offer free shipping within the continental US.

Our experience with the AS2

Delving slightly into softer territory, the AS2 is Amerisleep’s second firmest mattress on offer, only slightly less firmer than the AS1. Dubbed as one of the best mattresses for back pain by more than a few leading health magazines and journals, the AS2 is engineered to facilitate healthier spine alignment.

Still meant for those who prefer a firmer sleep surface, the AS2 can accommodate almost all sleeper types except the strictest of side sleepers.

Who should buy the AS2?

  • Most sleeper types except strict side sleepers
  • Those who suffer from various medical conditions involving their neck and spine
  • Those who tend to sleep hot
  • Those who cannot choose between an all foam bed or a hybrid mattress

Firmness

The Amerisleep AS2 is medium firm mattress that falls squarely in between a firm and a medium. On the mattress firmness scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the extra hard, I would classify the AS2 as a 3-4. This means it offers slightly more give than its older brother, the AS1.

Although the AS2 was primarily meant for those who sleep on their backs and stomachs, some side sleepers have found that they can lay on the mattress comfortably, provided that they switch from one side to another often. Those who sleep in just one position as well as sleepers who are more on the petite side would find the AS2 to be hard to sleep on and may wake up with sore shoulders.

Those who suffer from back and neck pain would do well with choosing a firmer mattress such as the AS2 as this provides them the extra lumbar support that they need.

The AS2 comes in both an all foam version and a hybrid version. Although technically the same mattress, the AS2 hybrid comes with the addition of a coil system. This can give minute differences between both versions. Although still firm, the AS2 hybrid has a bit of a bouncy feel compared to the all foam AS2 due to the addition of pocketed coils. We always recommend hybrid mattresses for heavier individuals as they provide more support.

Those who share a bed (as long as their partner is not a strict side sleeper) would find that this mattress offered good motion isolation, although I have to say the all foam bed did a slightly better job than its hybrid twin.

There are a few more foam layers to the AS2 as opposed to the AS1. The first layer is comprised of Amerisleep’s memory foam alternative, Bio-Pur. In both the memory foam and hybrid versions of the AS2 is Amerisleep’s HIVE transition layer – which can be found in all of the Amerisleep mattresses except for the AS1 and the AS5 hybrid – a proprietary transition foam with hundreds of raised hexagonal cutouts that are grouped together into different zones.

Each zone is designed to provide compression and support to all areas of the body from head to toe. Along the back and the lumbar area, the cutouts are denser and closer together to provide firmer support. In the hybrid version, a layer of individually pocketed coils provide extra bounce and support to the mattress and directly underneath the coil layer is a the base layer made up of Bio-Core foam.

Memory foam layers are known to trap heat but Bio-Pur foam does a great job of wicking away heat and when paired with a coil system, can make for a much cooler sleep experience. I have to say that the hybrid did a better job at cooling than the all foam bed when we tried them out. Again, it is up to you which version would be a more comfortable mattress for you .

Since Bio-Pur is plant-based and is made with zero percent petroleum, the chances of off-gassing are low. There could be a slight ‘new mattress smell’ upon unboxing, but this could easily be remedied by airing out the mattress for a day or two prior to use. Other memory foam mattresses may need a good week or two for the smell to be gone completely.

For both the foam and hybrid AS2, we found that the edge support was good but not necessarily the best. You would want to sleep on the middle anyway to get the full benefits of the zoned spinal support.

For added freshness and breathability, the AS2 mattress cover is made of a poly-knit cotton blend that features air channels all throughout. This ensures that air is constantly being circulated all throughout the mattress, keeping both the mattress and sleeper cool. The mattress cover is also removable and washable, should you have any accidents.

Sizes

The AS2 comes in 7 different sizes, including a King size mattress. It measures 12″ thick.

  • Twin – 38″ W x 74″ L x 12″ H
  • Twin XL – 38″ W x 80″ L x 12″ H
  • Full – 54″ W x 75″ L x 12″ H
  • Queen – 60″ W x 80″ L x 12″ H

Our experience with the AS3

The Amerisleep mattress model is fairly straightforward – proprietary foam layers, a coil system in the hybrids and a breathable cover. Nothing too fancy or outrageous. More often than not simple ones that get their points across. Out of all the mattresses in Amerisleep’s roster, the AS3 is their bestseller – so much so that at any given time, upon checking their website, the AS3’s stocks are always low.

Tailored to adapt to all body shapes and sleeping styles, the AS3 has been a permanent fixture in most ‘best mattress’ lists since its release in 2009.

Who should buy the AS3?

  • Back, stomach, side and combination sleepers
  • Couples
  • Those who tend to sleep hot
  • Those who suffer from chronic medical conditions such as fibromyalgia
  • Those who tend to switch between sleeping positions often

Firmness

Coming in both an all memory foam mattress version as well as a hybrid, the AS3 is Amerisleep’s mattress that sits right at the middle – neither soft nor hard. When they say medium firmness level, they really mean medium: for me, this mattress sits squarely at a 5 in the 1 to 10 mattress scale.

No matter the sleep position or body weight, the AS3 mattress caters to all. We always recommend heavier individuals to opt for a hybrid mattress as this offers them the most support and pressure relief – you get an option to choose with the AS3. Even side sleepers who are of a smaller build would find the AS3 quite comfortable to sleep on. One little catch: the AS3 mattress would probably be a poor choice for plus size strict back or stomach sleepers as they would sink into bed and not get the support they need in the long run.

Because of its medium firmness level, the AS3 would also be a good choice for those who share a bed and have different sleeping positions. The AS3 hybrid, being a hybrid with its individually wrapped spring coils, provides a little bit more bounce to the bed. We can’t say that one is better than the other – this is a matter of personal preference and sleeping styles. We can safely say though that the AS3 mattress would be the perfect compromise for couples who can’t settle on choosing the perfect bed.

Because of their slight differences, we can confirm that the all foam AS3 mattress provided just a tiny bit more motion isolation than the AS3 hybrid but this is because the hybrid version is, of course, springier. On the same note, the AS3 hybrid offered better edge support than its all foam sibling.

Construction

Like with all of their mattresses, Amerisleep uses Bio-Pur foam for the AS3’s main memory foam layer. Made from plant-based materials, Bio-Pur has a larger, open cell structure than regular memory foam which allows air to circulate through it quicker, keeping the mattress cool at all times. Certified by CertiPUR-US, Bio-Pur also has a quicker response time so although it still has the inherent cradled in feel of usual memory foam, it won’t let sleepers feel as though they are being swallowed by the bed.

The quick response time is also what offers sleepers more relief from pressure points, which in most sleepers are the neck, shoulders, back and hips. I have a constant crick in my right shoulder and neck area and I have to say that sleeping on the AS3 helped me wake up with a little less pain. Pressure relief is one of the most important factors in choosing a bed and the more pliable the surface of the mattress, the more pressure relieving properties it has. Akin to a latex mattress, Bio-Pur is also made without the use of harmful chemicals and VOCs.

For the both the AS3 hybrid and the all foam AS3, Amerisleep has included a HIVE transition layer that allows sleepers to lie in perfect alignment. Made out of specially cut foam with raised nodes, it offers extra zoned support and cushioning to each area of the body, but especially the hips and shoulders, where sleepers tend to feel soreness the most.

Being a hybrid (natch), the AS3 hybrid features a coil system that utilizes individually pocketed coils. Pocketed coils help with deadening motion as opposed to regular spring coils found in most innerspring beds. Coils help as well with keeping a mattress cool and fresh by letting air flow throughout, lessening the chances of mold and mildew.

As with all the Amerisleep mattresses, the AS3 has a Bio-Core base layer that, according to our reviewers, does not sag nor wear out even after a full year of use.

Sizes

The AS3 comes in 7 sizes, including a Split King. It measures 12 ” in thickness. As per the verified Amerisleep mattress reviews, the AS3 currently has a 4.85 our of 5 stars rating based on 6695 reviews.

  • Twin – 38″ W x 74″ L x 12″ H
  • Twin XL – 38″ W x 80″ L x 12″ H
  • Full – 54″ W x 75″ L x 12″ H

Our experience with the AS4

You may have noticed that as the numbers go higher with the Amerisleep mattress line, so does the softness level and the AS4 is Amerisleep’s jumping off point into the soft mattress category.

Meant for side and combination sleepers and those who prefer softer mattresses, the AS4 provides full body cushioning in conjunction with pressure relief.

Who should buy the AS4?

  • Side and combination sleepers
  • Those who prefer soft mattresses
  • Couples with the same sleeping style and preferences

Firmness

The second one in Amerisleep’s line that’s an all foam bed, the AS4 is a medium soft mattress that falls on a 7-8 on the 1 to 10 mattress scale.

Made for those who sleep on their sides all through the night, the AS4 is also good for combination sleepers who like to switch into different positions often. Although a very select few back sleepers may find the AS4 to be comfortable, this will not provide with the spinal support they would absolutely need in the long run. And we definitely do not recommend stomach sleepers to sleep on a soft memory foam mattress.

Because it is already quite soft, those who weigh over 250 lbs. may find the AS4 to be too soft and they’ll just feel suffocated by the bed. Not only that, a softer sleep surface would not be conducive to the needs of heavier individuals. Amerisleep has other, firmer options to choose from.

Conversely, Amerisleep actually recommends this bed to people who weigh under 130 lbs. as smaller sleepers don’t often put enough pressure on a mattress’ surface to experience full body cushion and relief but with they do with softer surfaces.

Couples with different styles should opt for a more medium mattress feel but those who share the same sleep preferences would do well with the AS4. Being an all foam mattress, the AS4 provides excellent motion isolation – as evidenced by someone in our team who shares a their bed with a (quite) heavy pet.

For those of us who sleep hot, however, sleeping on a softer mattress may pose a few problems. Namely the fact that a softer sleeping surface – especially one that is made of memory foam or a similar alternative – could mean that the mattress would allow them to sink in too much. Memory foam beds are well known for heat retention and although the Amerisleep AS4 is made with a memory foam alternative, being essentially cuddled by the mattress could cause heat to be trapped within that little cocoon. This is something to bear in mind.

Construction

A memory foam bed is simple in its design and the AS4 does not delve far from that rule. Made up of layers of proprietary memory foam and polyfoam, the Amerisleep AS4 is one of two all foam Amerisleep mattresses.

As with all of Amerisleep’s mattresses, the AS4’s comfort layers are made up of Bio-Pur, Amerisleep’s very own memory foam alternative that is made with plant-based, renewable materials. This lessens the chances of off-gassing that many memory foam beds suffer from. It may give off a faint, new mattress-y smell but this is easily fixed by airing out your new mattress for a day or two.

Bio-Pur is far more responsive than memory foam and bounces back in seconds so even if the AS4 is o the softer side of the spectrum, you would feel no danger of being stuck in the bed whilst shifting between positions. This responsiveness also provides more pressure relief while offering sleepers not only comfort but support as well. The AS4 offers that soft, cuddly feel that soft mattress aficionados crave without that stuck in the mud feel. I, personally prefer a softer bed, but being a stomach sleeper, a soft bed would wreak havoc on my hips and spine. Bio-Pur’s open cell design helps wick away heat, which is a crucial feature lacking in traditional memory foam.

The AS4 also features Amerisleep’s HIVE transition layer underneath the thick memory foam comfort layer of Bio-Pur memory foam. HIVE is Amerisleep’s proprietary tech that utilizes surface modification technology to offer zoned support to all areas of the body – from head to toe. All foam beds are already great at giving support but Amerisleep takes it up a notch by supplementing it with their own little spin on things. For side sleepers, the shoulders and the hips are what bears the brunt of all their body weight and sleeping on a soft surface can help alleviate any of the pain causing pressure.

The AS4 mattress has a base foam layer of Bio-Core, a dense polyfoam exclusive only to Amerisleep. This helps keep all the other layers sturdy and intact.

All mattresses from Amerisleep are encased in a removable poly-knit, breathable cotton cover that can be machine washed when needed. This helps keep the mattress stay fresh and new.

Sizes

The AS4 comes in 7 different sizes, including a California King. It measures 12 inches in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and bases, including adjustable ones.

  • Twin – 38″ W x 74″ L x 12″ H
  • Twin XL – 38″ W x 80″ L x 12″ H
  • Full – 54″ W x 75″ L x 12″ H

  • California King – 72″ W x 84″ L x 12″ H
  • Split King – 38″ W x 80″ L x 12″ H (x2)

Durability

The AS4 comes with a 20 year warranty as well as 100 night risk free, sleep trial. It is currently running a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 1075 verified reviews.

Our experience with the AS5

The softest mattress out of Amerisleep’s impressive mattress lineup, the AS5 is a favorite among strict side sleepers.

Next to the AS3, the AS5 is Amerisleep’s next bestselling mattress. This just goes to show that quite a good number of people prefer a softer bed, no matter the position they sleep in.

Who should buy the AS5?

  • Strict side and combination sleepers
  • Those who love a soft, cuddly mattress feel
  • Those who prefer thicker mattresses
  • Those who suffer from chronic pain

Firmness

The AS5 is Amerisleep’s softest mattress on offer. Falling on the very end of the hard to soft mattress scale, this, to me, sleeps like a body-hugging cloud. In fact, one of our team members sleeps on an AS5 hybrid.

The AS5 comes in both an all foam version and a hybrid version, one of our favorite features from Amerisleep. Having a coil system, the AS5 hybrid is slightly more bouncy than the all foam version although both still are excellent at deadening motion transfer.

Not many mattress companies offer an extra soft mattress but the popularity of the AS5 points to the fact that a lot of people do prefer them. That said, the AS5 is best suited to side sleepers and combination sleepers only. Stomach and back sleepers would not get the support that need from such a soft surface.

Couples who share the same sleeping preferences would do well with the AS5 but couples who have different sleeping styles should look into Amerisleep’s other mattress offerings. Even with its extremely plush comfort layer, the AS5 boasts great motion isolation although as per our team member who sleeps on an AS5, edge support could be better.

Construction

Probably the most luxurious out of all of Amerisleep’s mattresses, the AS5 is also the thickest, coming in at 14 inches. This could certainly rival any of the 5-star hotel beds out there.

Just like Amerisleep’s other mattresses, the AS5 features a Bio-Pur memory foam layer as its comfort layer, but it uses the thickest layer out of all of them. This gives it its extremely lush and plush feel. The Bio-Pur memory foam does a great job of contouring your body and cradling it while bouncing back almost immediately to help take the pressure off.

The AS5 comes with an Active Flex layer that helps in minimizing that ‘sunk in’ feel without compromising the bed’s softness. Active Flex is a unique material that is both buoyant and supportive which helps sleepers not sink in so far into the bed that they misalign their spine. Both the hybrid and the all foam version contain this layer.

The AS5 hybrid contains a support layer of pocketed coils that offers additional back support. Coils also offer flexible cushioning to promote healthier spinal alignment and further helps sleepers from sinking into the bed. Amerisleep hybrid mattresses also work well in preventing heat retention as the coils allow air to circulate throughout the entire mattress.

Aside from its Active Flex tech, the AS5 also features the HIVE transition layer, which Amerisleep uses in all of their mattresses. This layer offers zone support for all parts of the body, especially to the main pressure points such as the back, shoulders and hips. Our team member who sleeps on the AS5 found that this zoned system did a good job of relieving back, shoulder and neck pain after just a few nights of sleeping exclusively on the AS5.

Holding all the layers together is Amerisleep’s own Bio-Core foam base layer which helps prevent the mattress from sagging prematurely. All these layers are held in place with a breathable, poly-knit cotton cover that’s removable and machine washable.

Sizes

The AS5 comes in 7 different sizes, including a Twin XL. It measures 14″ in thickness and currently has a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating based on 435 verified reviews.

  • Twin – 38″ W x 74″ L x 14″ H
  • Twin XL – 38″ W x 80″ L x 14″ H
  • Full – 54″ W x 75″ L x 14″ H
  • Queen – 60″ W x 80″ L x 14″ H
  • King – 76″ W x 80″ L x 14″ H
  • California King – 72″ W x 84″ L x 14″ H
  • Split King – 38″ W x 80″ L x 14″ H (x2)

Durability

Amerisleep offers a 20 year warranty for all of their mattresses. The AS5 comes with a risk free, 100 night sleep trial should you wish to try it out. It is compatible with most bed bases and frames including and adjustable bed frame. Being a fairly new mattress brand, it may take a few good years for us to be able to wear our its warranty but the reviews of this mattress has been nothing short of stellar.
