What exactly is an Innerspring Mattress?

Ever watch those cartoons or children’s movies when you were a kid where everyone seemed to just be be bouncing on top of beds? Chances are, that was an innerspring mattress. (Also, chances are, you were yelled at for promptly jumping onto bed and copying what you saw. I know I was.)

Aside from being the best mattress for bouncing, innerspring mattresses are the most traditional mattress type, pre-dating foam and latex. The older versions of innerspring mattresses contained a layer of steel coils (hence the name innerspring) within layers of padding and fabric. While these older innersprings did a good job of providing comfort and support – especially for back sleepers – they tended to break down a lot more quickly and jumping on it for sure did not help matters. (I am so sorry, Gran.)

Nowadays, innersprings come in a variety of forms along with a wealth of comfort layers to choose from. Memory foam, gel memory foam, latex, cotton, wool, you name it. Coils now also come reinforced and individually pocketed for extra responsiveness. Almost all mattress companies now have come out with hybrids – combining all the best things about foam, latex and coils into one mean sleep machine.

Today, there is a very fine line between innerspring mattresses and hybrids and it’s easy to get confused. In fact, most companies call their hybrids, “innerspring hybrids”, to try and make a distinction but one thing remains clear: the innerspring mattress is here to stay.
