There are three styles of sleeping: back, stomach, and side but right now we are here to show side sleepers some little extra love. Most people don’t factor in sleeping positions when purchasing a mattress, but it’s actually one of the most important details you should consider, if not the most important one.
While sleeping on your back is thought to be the most beneficial out of all the sleeping positions, sleeping on your side can have numerous health benefits as well, especially if you have recurring back pain or sleep apnea. While sleeping on either your left or ride side is good, clinical studies have shown that sleeping on your left side frees up your organs more significantly than sleeping on your right. This, in turn, helps your organs easily get rid of all the toxins accumulated during the day. This is not to say that sleeping on your right side is bad, it just means that sleeping on your left is slightly better for you in the long run.
That said, not many side sleepers can stay in one position throughout the night – it can actually be quite painful – especially if you are sleeping on the wrong kind of mattress for your preferred sleeping position. It really is advisable to switch sides as often as you can (in your sleep no less, but you get the picture), and sleeping on the right mattress is key.
Now, I know what you’re thinking.
“Great. How will I know which mattress is best for me, a serial side sleeper? ” and ” We’re in the middle of a pandemic, I don’t want to be rolling around mattresses in a store. ” or ” My partner is a stomach sleeper and I’m a side sleeper, now what? “

#2. Amerisleep AS5
We here at Sleepline have a bit of a soft spot for the AS5 Hybrid. It is Amerisleep’s softest mattress on offer and while most mattress brands have a bit of a hard time balancing softness and support, oftentimes giving too much of a “sinking in” feel, the AS5 has none of that. Striking an ideal balance between function and comfort, Amerisleep’s AS5 provides just the right amount of that “body-hugging sinking in” feeling that soft mattresses are best known for along with the support that only innerspring mattresses can give.
The AS5 is Amerisleep’s thickest mattress on their roster, offering 14 inches of sweet plushness that is covered in Amerisleep’s very own breathable Celliant cover – which turns body heat into infrared energy, promoting local circulation and cell oxygenation while keeping you dry and at the prefect temperature. How very cool is that? Although it is Amerisleep’s thickest mattress, the AS5 can work perfectly with any adjustable bed.
As with all of their mattresses, Amerisleep utilizes their very own proprietary Bio-Pur material which features an open cell design to allow air to flow through more freely than traditional memory foam, making it perfect for hot sleepers. Bio-Pur is also more responsive than memory foam and adjusts to your movements within seconds, so no matter how you move about, there will be no odd, saggy spots on your bed. The AS5 is also made up of more proprietary layers (Active Flex and HIVE) which further contributes to the targeted support and pain relieving pressure relief that only a mattress of this calibre can give. Side sleepers will be happy to note that Amerisleep’s AS5 also provides extra cushion for the hips and shoulders.
The AS5 comes in 2 options – an all foam and a hybrid – and Amerisleep offers free shipping within the continental United States. All of Amerisleep’s mattresses are backed by a 20 year warranty and come with a risk-free 101 night trial.

Here’s something that is rarely seen in mattresses – the ability to be flipped to either side so you can choose whether you want a soft surface or a firmer one. It’s like getting two mattresses for the price of one!
Layla in Arabic or Hebrew simply means dusk or night, which is only fitting for a company that focuses solely on providing you with the best sleep experience one can ever have. Coming in both an all foam and a hybrid, all of Layla’s mattresses are infused with Copper gel making it cooler, cleaner and more supportive. Scientific studies have also shown the many therapeutic benefits of keeping copper close to the body; a few of which are pain relief and helping negate the effects of free radicals in the bloodstream.

What side is the best for sleeping?
Back sleepers tend to get a lot of love from the health and wellness community (even the beauty community) whereas stomach sleepers tend to get a lot of flak but side sleepers may just have the last laugh – scientists have recently discovered that our brains clear our waste out when we sleep and side sleeping may help clear out waste more efficiently than all the other sleeping postures.
Side sleeping is widely recommended and is best for:
- Those who suffer from sleep apnea and other breathing problems
- Those with cardiovascular disease
- Those who suffer from chronic pain
- Pregnant women
- Those who suffer from GERD and acid reflux
Bear in mind though, there are a few key differences on which side is best to sleep on. Those with cardiovascular disease are recommended to sleep on their right as studies have shown that sleeping on the right side may help people with heart failure from further health damage. Those with GERD or acid reflux as well as pregnant women are recommended to sleep on their left as sleeping on the right side may cause more acid to leak through the esophagus for acid reflux sufferers and for pregnant women, sleeping on the left side provides maximum circulation for both mother and baby.
Here’s a little food for thought: when you are anxious, sad or depressed, have you ever thought about which position you find yourself sleeping in, no matter what type of sleeper you may be? Do you see it now? That’s right, us humans, when anxious, sad or even afraid, curl right back up into the fetal position. How fascinating is the human brain and body that no matter how much of a modern life we now may lead, our senses lead us right back into primeval mode. Curling up into a fetal position is an instinctual reaction to extreme stress or trauma. This stems from the fact that our ancestors would curl into the fetal position whenever they feel that they are in danger as this position provides better protection to the brain and vital organs. Nowadays, though sabre toothed tigers and apocalyptic natural catastrophes are but hazy fodder for dusty, old history books, the stresses and fears we face are still as real as ever but sleep is still our best and most natural recovery tool.
