Out of all of the trendy “mattress-in-a-box” internet companies that have been disrupting the industry in recent years, Saatva is one of the most popular. Their marketing strategy of sponsoring popular podcasts (Your Mom’s House, etc.) has put their brand name in front of millions of consumers, but you’re probably wondering if their beds are legit. Are Saatva mattresses worth the money or are they all hype?

The company offers a wide selection of mattress types including innerspring, hybrid, latex, memory foam, and air beds. In this review we’ll focus on the Saatva Classic, their flagship coil-on-coil innerspring mattress. We’ll break down the different features of the bed so that you can find out if it will meet your needs or if you should pass and look elsewhere.

Let’s start by examining which type of consumer should buy a mattress from Saatva.

Which type of sleeper should use the Saatva mattress?

Our review team rigorously tested the Saatva and sought feedback from real customers who’ve purchased and used the product. Based on our research we think that the Saatva is best for stomach and back sleepers because of how supportive it is, but that side sleepers will also like it because there are a variety of different firmness and thickness options.

You should buy the Saatva if you:

  • Are a hot sleeper. Saatva keeps you extremely cool and has great temperature neutrality due to strong airflow between the coils in both layers.
  • Want free in-home setup. Saatva offers free white glove delivery, which includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal with no additional charge.
  • Want to choose between different firmness levels and construction options. Most mattress brands only offer one or two beds, but Saatva offers their products in a variety of different firmness levels and construction types (innerspring, memory foam, etc.).

Features of the Saatva mattress

The Saatva is a US-manufactured mattress that has been on the market since 2010. Their flagship Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress that is available in three different firmness settings that occupy different positions on the 1-10 firmness scale: Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), and Firm (7.5). In addition to the firmness options, this bed is available in either an 11.5 inch or 14.5 inch profile option.

Saatva manufactures their mattresses using a quilted Euro-top cover with polyfoam and dacron fiber padding, along with a memory foam and polyfoam comfort layer on top of a transitional layer of pocketed coils. These layers all rest on top of a support core made with bonnell coils manufactured from recycled steel.

In this section we’ll discuss the performance, construction, pricing, return and shipping policies, and everything else you need to know about the Saatva. We’ll also take a look at how this bed compares to other similar competitors so you can decide for yourself if it meets your own needs or if you’d prefer something different.

Saatva offers their mattresses in three different firmness levels: Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), and Firm (7.5). These correspond to a medium-soft, medium, and medium-firm feeling respectively.

We recommend that you purchase the Luxury Firm option if you don’t have a strong preference for a very soft or firm mattress. Luxury Firm is Saatva’s medium-firm option and it meets the needs of the largest number of sleepers. This option should feel comfortable for you regardless of your sleeping position or personal preferences. If you know for a fact that you prefer a firm mattress (if you’re a back sleeper, for example) then you should buy the Firm option. If you’re someone who prefers to sink in to their mattress then you should opt for the Plush Soft version.

The Plush Soft bed does a great job of conforming to your body shape while you sleep without any uncomfortable pressure points. The added soft polyfoam layer combines with the unique coil-on-coil construction to give you a good blend of support and comfort.

The Luxury Firm has a plush polyfoam layer – similar to the Plush Soft version – but this one conforms to your body shape slightly less, so that you get less of that “sinking in” feeling. Saatva’s Luxury Firm bed gives you the feeling of floating “on” your mattress rather than sinking “in” to it.

The Firm option lacks the Euro-top padding and the plush polyfoam layers that the softer versions have. If you choose this option you’ll get minimal contouring but you’ll maximize the amount of support you get from your bed. We recommend this one for back sleepers only.

Saatva claims that their mattresses should hold up for 15-years, which is about average for a modern innerspring bed. Our testing and feedback from customers indicates that this bed should hold up as long as the manufacturer claims it does.

The bed is constructed from bonnell coils made out of thick steel which looks and feels resilient. The transitional layer contains pocketed coils that add extra reinforcement and stability. Mattresses that feature this type of coil-on-coil construction usually last a very long time.

If you buy the medium-firm or medium-soft versions of the bed it’s important to note that they include a Euro-top cover which can deteriorate over time. Additionally, these tops are known for leaving body impressions over time. You can protect your mattress from this kind of wear and tear by rotating it from head-to-foot every six months.

The Saatva is constructed with a Euro-top cover made out of a layer of foam and fiber padding, intended to make the sleeping surface softer and more comfortable. The Plush Soft and Luxury Firm models include a 1.25 inch soft polyfoam layer and the Firm version feature a 1.5 inch firm polyfoam layer. Each of these models also includes a 0.75 inch layer of dacron fibers underneath the polyfoam.

The comfort layers in all versions are made out of a top layer of polyfoam and a bottom memory foam layer. These comfort layers measure 1 inch thick combined. If you opt for the Plush Soft version of the Saatva mattress you’ll also get a 2.5 inch thick layer of soft polyfoam, designed to provide added contouring and body-conforming features.

Underneath the comfort layers is a transitional layer consisting of 4-inch pocketed coils made out of recycled steel. The coils are 14.5 gauge, which is considered a medium level of thickness. Most mattresses have coils measuring between 12-gauge (thinnest) to 17-gauge (thickest). Thinner coils tend to be more springy and thicker ones tend to have a stiffer feel. The Saatva sits between those two extremes.

Saatva’s support layers sit underneath the transitional layer and consist of thick 13-gauge bonnell coils constructed out of recycled steel. This layer is designed to – with the assistance of the transitional layer – stabilize the sleeping surface and provide edge support. If you choose the 11.5 inch profile option you get a 4-inch support layer. The 14.5 inch Saatva comes with 7-inch coils.

When you buy a Saatva you can choose either an 11.5 inch or 14.5 inch height. The medium-profile 11.5 inch version sacrifices a few inches off of the support coil layer but still provides adequate comfort and stability for people who are average weight or lower. The 14.5 inch version is considered a high-profile mattress and is most suitable for heavy people.

Temperature regulation

One of the key strengths of coil-on-coil innerspring mattresses – like the Saatva – is temperature neutrality. Mattresses with two separate coil layers generate stronger airflow, which helps reduce the surface temperature and prevents you from overheating while you sleep.

If overheating is a concern for you we recommend purchasing either the Luxury Firm or Firm models, since the Plush Soft version may feel warmer due to the added 2.5 inch comfort layer. You can also sink into the Plush Soft more deeply, which can restrict airflow and lead to overheating.

What sizes are available?

The Saatva is available in all standard sizes:

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

You can also choose from two different height options: 11.5″ Custom Slim and 14.5″ Premier Luxury, depending on your personal preferences and which one is a better fit for your box spring or foundation.

Saatva retails for a price that is about average for this level of quality and customer service. If you’re on a restricted budget we recommend looking elsewhere, but if you’re willing to spend a little bit we think that the quality of this bed is worth it.

How much does the Saatva mattress cost?

  • Twin$699
  • Twin XL $799
  • Full $1,049
  • Queen $1,199
  • King $1,599
  • California King $1,599

Saatva offers a 15-year warranty to protect you against defects in workmanship and materials. For the first 2 years of the warranty, Saatva will replace your bed with a brand new one if it’s deemed defective. In years 3-15, the company will completely repair and re-cover your Saatva but you’ll have to pay a $99 transportation charge each way.

The company also offers and interesting option on your warranty that they call the “Fairness Replacement Option”. I’m honestly not sure what type of consumer this is designed for, but it’s definitely an option you should be aware of if you think it’ll meet your needs.

“In all circumstances, if you are choosing the “Fairness Replacement Option,” YOU GET TO KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL MATTRESS. If you choose, instead of us repairing your Saatva in years 3 to 5, we will deliver and install a brand new Saatva mattress for only 30% of the original price you paid. Within years 6 to 10, we will replace your mattress for only 50% of the original price you paid and years 11 to 15, we will replace your mattress for only 75% of the original price you paid. There are no other fees, not even for delivery of your new mattress. Remember, YOU KEEP YOUR ORIGINAL MATTRESS, be it for another room in your home, a family member or friend, or to donate to the charity of your choice.”

Trial period

Like most other mattress-in-a-box companies (DreamCloud, Puffy, etc.), Saatva offers a limited free trial period so you can test out the mattress and send it back if it doesn’t meet your needs. Saatva offers a 120-night sleep trial on their mattress.

The trial period begins on the day your mattress is delivered (not on the day you place your order). If you aren’t satisfied with your bed for any reason, notify the company and they will come pick it up and issue you a complete refund minus a $99 transportation fee.

Saatva offers only one 120-night home trial per mattress. Warranty exchanges are not eligible for a new 120-night trial.
