Our Experience with the GhostBed 3D Matrix SmartBed

The first Sleep Number bed alternative on our list is the GhostBed 3D Matrix SmartBed. Possibly one of the most luxurious and high-tech mattresses on the market, the Ghost SmartBed 3D Matrix has virtually all the essential features that you need for a great night’s sleep. Since this smart mattress allows you to change its firmness level by adjusting its air chambers, it’s able to accommodate all sleeper types regardless of body weight and sleep position. And similar to a Sleep Number mattress, couples who have different firmness preferences have the option of choosing their side of the bed and making personalized adjustments regarding pressure relief and firmness. All these settings can be controlled through the Ghost SmartBed app which can be used on your smartphone or tablet.

While I mentioned above that the Ghost SmartBed’s firmness can be altered through the Ghost app, the general feel of the mattress is quite soft and cushiony due to its memory foam top layer. It offers plush pressure relief for side sleepers and full body contouring for back sleepers; but individuals who sleep on their stomachs should adjust the bed’s settings to make it firmer until they receive ample support for their hips and lower back. Although both the Ghost SmartBed and Sleep Number mattresses have adjustable air chambers, the former has five ergonomically designed zones of support starting from your head and all the way to your toes. Each of these zones can be controlled to relieve pressure from different points across your body to get rid of potential pain and stiffness.

The Ghost SmartBed is 12″ tall and it’s comprised of six total layers including air chambers and biometric sensors. The smart bed is encased in a unique cooling cover that’s made of a proprietary material called Ghost Ice fabric. Below that is the 3D Matrix gel polymer layer which reacts to your body weight and absorbs heat away from you instead of trapping it inside the bed. Directly beneath this layer lies a 2-inch section of gel-infused memory foam which conforms to your curves and provides cooling pressure relief. Following this is a 2-inch transitional layer that’s made of soft transition foam to ease your body into the air chambers below and provide additional cushioning.

Next up are the smart sensors which are designed to determine where pressure is building across your body and then show you the results on your smartphone or tablet. These sensors also monitor your sleep patterns to help you make the necessary improvements to enhance your overall sleep health. Below these sensors are the medical-grade adjustable air chambers which communicate with your Ghost app so you can inflate or deflate it based on your individual needs. Finally, the bed’s base layer is made up of 2 inches of high-density support core foam which acts as a stable foundation for the layers above it and increases the durability of the mattress.

While the Ghost Smart Bed excels in motion isolation, it does have average edge support which means sitting or lying near the perimeter of the mattress will cause you to sink into its layers. But all things considered, we think it is an outstanding , albeit highly expensive, air bed that has integrated smart features and proprietary cooling technology to give you some of the best sleep you’ve ever experienced.

The Ghost SmartBed 3D Matrix comes in 5 sizes. It’s compatible with most foundations including adjustable bed frames and platform beds (under bed lighting optional). Its available sizes are:

  • Twin XL
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King
  • Split King

The SmartBed 3D Matrix comes with a 101-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 25-year warranty.

#2. Eight Sleep Pod Pro

eight sleep pod pro on platform
Eight Sleep POD Pro

Pros:

  • Advanced cooling technology
  • Adjustable temperature for each side of the bed
  • Built-in sleep tracker
  • Gentle alarm wake system
  • App-enabled
  • Responsive
  • Made with highly durable foams

Cons:

  • Not the best option for heavyweight sleepers (over 250 lbs)
  • Poor motion isolation
  • Expensive price range
  • Average edge support

Our Experience with the Eight Sleep Pod Pro

Coming up next in our list of Sleep Number alternatives is a high-tech smart mattress that’s been touted as one of the most cooling models on the market: the Eight Sleep Pod Pro. What sets this bed apart from other cooling mattresses is that it features unparalleled temperature-regulating technology that’s designed to keep you refreshed even if you tend to overheat at night. You have the option of making your bed cooler as well as increasing its temperature to make it feel warmer. On top of that, you also have the luxury of varying the temperature for each side of the mattress which is a feature that couples with different preferences will enjoy. That being said, we don’t think that everybody can afford the Eight Sleep Pod Pro; but if you do have the budget for it, we assure you that it’s an excellent smart mattress for hot sleepers and individuals who want to track their sleep health.

Unlike Sleep Number beds which give you the option of adjusting the firmness level of your mattress, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro does not have this advantage and therefore it’s not suitable for every individual. Sitting at 6 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, the Pod Pro is just a touch softer than the industry standard for medium-firm. It works extremely well for most side sleepers as it provides soft cushioning and pressure relief for your sensitive hip and shoulder joints. Individuals over 250 lbs. however, would need a mattress with thicker comfort layers to prevent their shoulders and hips from making contact with this bed’s firm support layer. We would also recommend the Pod Pro for light to average weight back and stomach sleepers since it does provide body contouring as well as hip and lumbar support.

The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is an all-foam bed that’s comprised of four total layers and a proprietary smart cooling cover. Encasing the mattress is the unique Active Grid cover which contains tubing that will hold water to warm or cool the mattress. This cover is zipped on top of the mattress and it also contains Comfort Blend foam to provide some initial plushness and cushioning. The Pod Pro has three comfort layers: a layer of soft and bouncy Airflow foam, a layer of Supportive Air Technology that offers added pressure relief, and a Flexspring Technology Core that gives the mattress a bit more responsiveness. Lastly, the bottom layer is made up of highly durable premium base foam which acts as a sturdy foundation for all the layers above it.

I should mention that the Eight Sleep Pod Pro does have a few drawbacks, namely average edge support, poor motion isolation, and lack of support for plus-size individuals. Even so, it is absolutely on of the best cooling mattress that we’ve ever reviewed and it’s made with the highest quality materials. The above-mentioned Active Grid also works with the Hub (main computer/pump device) to track your heart rate, breathing, and sleeping patterns to help you find ways to better your overall sleep quality.

The Eight Sleep Pod Pro comes in 4 sizes and measures 12″ in thickness:

  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

The Eight Sleep Pod Pro mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 10-year warranty for the foam portion of the mattress. The tech layer of the bed however, is only limited to a 2-year warranty.

#3. ReST Original

rest original smart bed on bed base
Rest Original Smart Bed with Gel Grid

Pros:

  • Contains adjustable air chambers
  • Variable firmness levels
  • Zoned support
  • Built-in pressure map
  • Strong edge support
  • Excellent motion isolation
  • App-enabled
  • Removable and machine-washable cover

Cons:

  • Not suitable for strict stomach sleepers over 230 lbs
  • Stuck in the mud feel
  • Very high price point

Our Experience with the ReST Original

Similar to what Sleep Number offers, this next model is a memory foam bed that integrates adjustable air chambers for personalized comfort and support. Featuring five different zones of support, the ReST Original is a smart bed that offers customizable firmness settings as well as a smart sensor layer that tracks pressure buildup across your body. The mattress has separate support cores for each side of the bed that can be individually adjusted to achieve your desired firmness level, which is a great perk especially if you don’t have the same preferences as your partner. All of these settings can be regulated through a smartphone app which controls the five air chamber zones of the mattress supporting the head, shoulders, lumbar region, hips, and legs. If you’re looking for a Sleep Number Bed Alternative that has equal or even better overall quality, then you should definitely check out the ReST Original Smart Bed.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, you have the option of adjusting your ReST Smart Bed’s firmness levels from Extra Soft all the way to Extra Firm. This makes the mattress suitable for all sleeper types, with the exception of strict stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs. as these individuals might find their hips sinking into its thick comfort layer. It is however, an ideal mattress for side sleepers who love the conforming hug of memory foam on their shoulders and hips. The ReST Smart Bed is incredibly pressure relieving and it contours to your body’s curves, making it a great mattress for back sleepers as well. We also highly recommend this bed for couples who appreciate a mattress that has almost no motion transfer and strong support around its edges, giving you the maximum surface area to sleep on.

Standing at 13 inches tall, the ReST Smart Bed has a slightly higher profile than an average mattress. It’s comprised of four total layers including memory foam, polyfoam, air chambers, and smart sensors. The mattress is encased in a cover that’s made of a performance fabric called Sleep Skin. It’s designed to aid in temperature regulation and it can be unzipped and removed from the mattress for cleaning. Beneath the cover is 3 inches of gel-infused memory foam which serves as the bed’s comfort layer by providing you with a good amount of cushioning and contouring. Unlike traditional memory foam which tends to trap body heat, this foam contains gel-infusions to draw heat away from your body and keep you sleeping temperature neutral.

Next up is a 1-inch section of polyfoam which has a quicker response to pressure and acts as a transitional layer for the support core below it. Below this layer you’ll find two sets of five medical-grade polyurethane air chambers, one for each side of the bed. This layer acts as the bed’s primary support core and it’s surrounded by high-density polyfoam to reinforce the edges of the mattress.

I should mention that the ReST Smart Bed has a “stuck in the mud” feel due to its thick memory foam comfort layer. This could hinder movement while lying on the mattress which could be an issue for some individuals such as combination sleepers who love to switch sleeping positions throughout the night. And despite its very high price point, we think the ReST Smart Bed is a worthwhile investment for individuals who want a premium smart mattress that has countless firmness options and advanced sleep tracking technology.

The ReST Original is compatible with any type of bed frame and it comes in a total of 9 sizes:

  • Twin XL
  • Queen
  • Queen Split Top
  • Eastern King
  • California King
  • Eastern King Split Top
  • California King Split Top
  • Split King
  • Split California King

This mattress comes with a 90-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 10-year warranty.

#4. Saatva Solaire

Check Current Price | Best for All Sleeper Types | Review

saatva solaire mattress on bed base
Saatva Solaire

Pros:

  • Two available versions
  • Offers 50 different firmness settings
  • Contains vulcanized air chambers
  • Zoned support
  • Low motion transfer
  • Great edge support
  • Cooling
  • Remote-controlled

Cons:

  • Above average price point
  • No sleep tracking technology

Our Experience with the Saatva Solaire

Of all the Sleep Number bed alternatives on this list, the Saatva Solaire is the most affordable and least sophisticated airbed model. In spite of this, it still is a luxury mattress that’s built with premium materials and is suitable for most, if not all types of sleepers, which is why we included it in our lineup. The Saatva Solaire is available in two versions: Standard, and the pricier Upper Flex which allows you to raise and lower each side with an adjustable base. Both of these versions have 50 different firmness settings that can be modified for each side of the bed. These adjustments are made possible through the use of vulcanized air chambers that can be inflated or deflated depending on your preferred firmness level.

The Saatva Solaire’s wide range of firmness levels (1-50) makes it a suitable mattress for all sleeper types regardless of body weight. Generally, side sleepers who need added cushioning and pressure relief should opt for a level from the 15-20 firmness range, and for stomach sleepers who need a firm and supportive sleep surface, the 45-50 range should be ideal. Meanwhile, back sleepers should choose a firmness level from the 35-40 range for a perfect blend of pressure relief and spinal support. The Solaire also has great edge support and low motion transfer which are qualities that make the bed an excellent choice for couples. And for the icing on the cake, this mattress sleeps quite cool as well because it has a breathable latex layer and gel-infused memory foam.

This luxury mattress is 13″ tall and is comprised of five layers including a thin moisture barrier on top of the adjustable air chambers. The Solaire’s cover is quite unique because it’s 100% cotton and it’s tufted with comfort foam to provide initial pressure relief and softness. Below that is 2 inches of gel-infused memory foam for additional cushioning and pleasant body contouring. Then there is a 1-inch layer of Talalay latex which is a durable and breathable material that gives the Solaire some responsiveness and prevents your body from sinking too far into the mattress. Next up is the bed’s main support layer which consists of vulcanized air chambers that are surrounded by a dense foam encasement which reinforces its perimeter. Finally, all of these layers sit on a 1-inch layer of high-density support foam which provides zoned support as well as added durability to the mattress.

Although the Saatva Solaire doesn’t have the same bells and whistles as the other models on this list, it’s an incredibly versatile and durable mattress – as most of Saatva’s beds are – that could definitely go toe to toe with a Sleep Number bed.

The Saatva Solaire comes in 7 sizes:

  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • Split King
  • California King
  • Split California King

This Saatva mattress comes with a 180-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 25-year warranty.

#5. ReST Essential

Check Current Price | Best for Memory Foam Fans

rest essential smart bed mattress
ReST Essential Smart Bed

Pros:

  • Contains adjustable air chambers
  • Multiple firmness settings
  • Zoned support
  • Features smart sensors
  • Excellent motion isolation
  • Great at relieving pressure points
  • App-enabled

Cons:

  • High price point
  • Stuck in the mud feel
  • Weak edge support
  • Not suitable for strict stomach sleepers over 130 lbs

Our Experience with the ReST Essential

Culminating our list is another model from ReST Performance, the ReST Essential Smart Bed. Of all the three ReST beds that are currently available, the Essential Smart Bed is the most affordable option due to the fact that it only has three air chambers as opposed to the ReST Original’s five air chambers. Like the other ReST beds, the Essential offers multiple firmness choices as well as three ergonomic zones of support for even weight distribution and targeted pressure point relief. It also has built-in smart sensors that are designed to map your body’s pressure points and allow you to make real-time adjustments. All of these settings can be fine-tuned by using the integrated ReST app through your smartphone or tablet.

Even though the ReST Essential offers numerous firmness options, it also has a pretty thick memory foam comfort layer which has the tendency to be compressed under heavy loads. This means that heavier individuals, especially strict stomach sleepers, might find their hips sinking excessively into the mattress causing misalignment of the spine which could lead to hip and lower back pain. With that being said, the ReST Essential is in fact a superb choice for some other sleeper types, particularly side sleepers who need a surface with enough give and cushioning to relieve pressure from their joints, especially for those who suffer from joint pain. Moreover, back sleepers of light to average weight will also enjoy the contouring feel of this bed and you could adjust its firmness level to provide you with ample spinal support. The Essential also has excellent motion isolation, and although it contains a thick memory foam comfort layer, this foam is gel-infused to draw heat away from the sleeper’s body.

Comprised of three main layers, the ReST Essential is 13 inches thick and it features unique technology that allows it to make real-time firmness adjustments as you sleep. It’s encased in a special cover that’s made of a performance fabric called Sleep Skin, it’s also removable and machine-washable. Below the cover is a 4-inch layer of gel-infused memory foam which provides close-conforming pressure relief and acts as a buffer between you and the air chambers below. Next up are the bed’s smart sensors which monitor your body’s pressure points, and below this you’ll find the adjustable air chambers that can be inflated or deflated depending on the support you need. To top off its construction is a layer of high-density support foam for increased durability and added support.

I should mention that it’s a bit hard to switch positions on the ReST Essential due to its thick layer of conforming memory foam. If you’re a combination sleeper, then you should opt for a mattress that’s more bouncy and responsive. One great example is the Layla Hybrid. Aside from that, the Essential is an amazing air bed that’s ideal for side sleepers and some back sleepers.

The ReST Essential comes in 6 sizes:

  • Twin XL
  • Queen
  • Eastern King
  • Eastern King Split Top
  • California King
  • Split King

This mattress comes with a 90-night sleep trial and it’s backed by a 10-year warranty.

Choosing a good alternative to Sleep Number

Sleep Number is best known for its adjustable air beds which allow sleepers to customize firmness settings for each side of the bed. Couples, in particular, greatly appreciate this option because partners don’t always have the same preferences.

The ideal Sleep Number alternative would also have to feature adjustable air chambers as the bed’s primary support layer, and individual firmness settings for each side of the mattress. These are the two main qualities that set Sleep Number mattresses apart years ago, but today a number of other mattress brands have also begun manufacturing bed’s with similar features.

Some people are looking for cheaper, more budget-friendly alternatives, while there are others that want a more advanced model like a luxurious smart bed. No matter what your reason for seeking a Sleep Number alternative is, we’ve got you covered in our list of standout mattresses above that boast equal, or even higher quality than Sleep Number beds.
