loom and leaf mattress on a simple bed base
Saatva Loom & Leaf

Pros

Cons

  • May restrict movement when switching positions
  • May feel a bit warm for hot sleepers
  • May feel a bit firm for some sleepers

First in our list of the best American made mattresses is the Loom & Leaf made by Saatva, an online mattress company with a proven track record of satisfied customers. Crafted with organic cotton, thick layers of memory foam, and cooling support layers, this mattress is an exceptional pick for sleepers in need of deep pressure relief. But is this bed really as comfortable as its description suggests? Don’t worry, we’ve assessed everything about the Loom & Leaf below to help you find out if it’s the mattress you’ve been looking for.

Who should buy the Loom and Leaf?

  • Couples
  • Those suffering from back and shoulder pain
  • Back and stomach sleepers
  • Those who prefer a a classic memory foam feel

This mattress comes in two firmness options: Relaxed Firm and Firm. This allows sleepers to select the right mattress for their body type and find the perfect feel that they want.

The Loom and Leaf is a great choice for couples because it has great motion isolation which means that you’re unlikely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements throughout the night. It also has nice edge support which adds more support and stability to the mattress.

We also recommend the Loom and Leaf for average weight sleepers who suffer from chronic back pain since the top layers of memory foam fill in the space at the lumbar region which provides pressure relief. Moreover, sleepers who experience shoulder pain should expect a cushioning feel on their pressure points as they press into the structure of the bed.

Lastly, this mattress is perfect for back sleepers because of the high density memory foam designed to prevent over-sinking and sagging. Although, its memory foam layers do allow for some sinkage and contouring, it still provides ample support to relieve pressure which is something side and combination sleepers will appreciate.

Firmness

The Loom and Leaf comes in two firmness options:

  • Relaxed Firm – we gave this version a 6 on the 10-point mattress firmness scale with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest, this model is considered medium firm. This firmness level is great for light and average weight back and side sleepers. We think that stomach sleepers however, may find this model too soft to provide ample hip support depending on their body weight. Choose this version if you prefer sleeping “in” and not “on” your mattress. This model offers the traditional “hug” feeling of a memory foam mattress. The Relaxed Firm also offers slightly more contouring to relieve aches and pains.
  • Firm – we rate this version an 8 on the firmness scale, which means it really is a firm mattress. This model does an excellent job of alleviating pressure points in combination sleepers over 230 pounds. We also recommend this firmness level to average and heavyweight back and stomach sleepers since the high-density memory foam helps maintain spinal alignment and provides added support.

Construction

This high quality 12″ mattress is built with four foam layers of gel-infused memory foam, memory foam, poly foam, and high-density poly foam. The Loom & Leaf has an organic cotton cover which gives it a soft and cozy feel.

Its comfort layer is crafted from a thick section of cooling gel-infused memory foam. Apparently, this material has a slow response to pressure that could allow you to sink in for pressure relief, especially at the shoulders and hips. Additionally, another layer of luxury memory foam follows the top section, creating an even deeper sink for full body-contouring.

Next up, is a transitional layer of poly foam, which has a much quicker response to pressure than the memory foam sections above it. This regulates some of the sinkage of the top layers and helps to gradually ease the sleeper into the firm base below.

Finally, the base layer of the bed is made up of high-density poly foam. This firm material is what gives the mattress its shape and helps in supporting the softer layers of foam above it. All the foam layers in this mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. The Loom and Leaf’s complex construction and high quality materials show us that Saatva is without a doubt, one of the best mattress manufacturers in the US.

The Loom and Leaf comes in 8 sizes:

Amerisleep has 5 models total, the AS1, AS2, AS3, AS4, and AS5, which are scaled from firmest (AS1) to softest (AS5). Next up in our list is the Amerisleep AS3 which is the middle firmness option and also the brand’s most popular model. This 12-inch mattress combines supportive design with pressure relief. Moreover, it’s a versatile all-foam mattress that could appeal to an array of sleepers and you might very well be one of them. Continue reading our Amerisleep AS3 review to find out.

Who should buy the Amerisleep AS3?

  • Couples
  • All sleeper types
  • Memory foam lovers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who prefer a more responsive bed

We found the AS3 to be a great bed for couples due to its medium-firm feel and low motion transfer, so you’re unlikely to feel your partner tossing and turning. Plus, it sleeps cool, which is important when you have two sources of body heat warming up the bed.

Side and back sleepers like myself should be quite happy with this bed because it feels really comfortable. You’ll feel almost no pressure on your shoulders and hips thanks to the cushioning provided by the thick layer of Bio-Pur foam. Strict back sleepers should also feel comfortable sleeping on this mattress because its top layer ensures proper spinal alignment and offers some gentle body contouring and pressure relief.

This bed is also a great choice for you traditional memory foam lovers out there who want a bed that sleeps cool and doesn’t make you feel overly stuck.

Firmness

After trying it out, we gave the Amerisleep AS3 a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5 out of 10, so this bed is just a touch softer than that. This firmness level can accommodate a variety of sleepers. It provides a lot of contouring and pressure relief, while still providing ample support.

We recommend this bed to light to average individuals although heavier sleepers may opt for hybrid option. However, if you’re a heavier back sleep who suffers from back pain, we suggest that you opt for a firmer mattress with more localized support. Furthermore, we don’t recommend this bed for heavier stomach sleepers because it lacks support at the hips, which tend to sink in when stomach sleeping. If you’re a stomach sleeper and weigh a little over 250 lbs., we recommend looking into the Layla Hybrid mattress.

Construction

The Amerisleep AS3 is a 12-inch mattress that’s made of three different layers. The combination of the memory foam comfort layer and the poly foam below should give both pressure relief and support. All Amerisleep mattresses use foams that are CertiPUR-US Certified, which means they are free from harmful chemicals and pollutants.

The cover for the AS3 is the same as all of the other mattresses in the Amerisleep line which is made of a soft blend of polyester, Celliant and spandex. We found the cover slightly cool to the touch thanks to the heat- absorbing Celliant blended into the material.

Next up is the comfort layer which is made of 3 inches Bio-Pur foam, which as I mentioned in the previous review, has a slow response to pressure. Traditional memory foam is known for trapping body heat, but Amerisleep uses a foam with an open cell structure, which will help dissipate that heat to help with cooling. This is great news for you hot sleepers out there.

Below the comfort layer is a 2-inch HIVE transition layer. This foam is a bit firmer and it provides some bounce to the mattress so you won’t feel stuck when trying to adjust your position. It is worth mentioning that this layer has a convoluted design to create some airspace in the mattress to aid in temperature regulation and cooling.

Finally, the foundation of the mattress consists of a 7-inch layer of Bio-Core foam. This high density foam is firm to support the comfort and transition layers above as well as provide deep compression support to the sleeper. The base also helps give the AS3 its shape and provides durability.

Sizes and Pricing

The Amerisleep AS3 comes in 6 sizes:

  • Twin (74″ x 38″ x 12″)
  • Twin XL (80″ x 38″ x 12″)
  • Full (75″ x 54″ x 12″)
  • Queen (80″ x 60″ x 12″)
  • King (80″ x 76″ x 12″)
  • California King (84″ x 72″ x 12″)

Durability

Amerisleep offers a 100-night sleep trial for all their mattresses as well as a 20-year warranty that covers defects in materials and craftsmanship.

Amerisleep mattresses are all made in the USA and are made with eco-friendly materials.

#3. Ghostbed 3D Matrix

ghostbed 3d matrix mattress on simple base
GhostBed 3D Matrix

Pros:

Cons:

  • May be too expensive for budget shoppers
  • May be too firm for some

Use coupon code “SLEEPLINE” to save 30%

Although the Ghostbed 3D Matrix may sound like the title of a mysterious 90s sci-fi action movie, it’s actually Ghostbed’s latest and most advanced hybrid mattress. The 3D Matrix provides proprietary cooling technology that absorbs heat and moves it away from the body. And being a hybrid mattress, it gives sleepers a balanced feel as the cushioning effect of the foam top layers is counterbalanced by the supportiveness of the coil base layer. Read on for our full review of this luxury mattress by Ghostbed.

Who should buy the Ghostbed 3D Matrix?

  • All sleeper types
  • People who prefer a responsive bed with a balanced foam feel
  • Couples
  • Hot sleepers

The 3D Matrix is a medium-firm mattress, which is kind of like the “Goldilock’s zone” for mattresses since it’s not too soft and not too firm. Its combination of soft foam layers and individually wrapped coils provides adequate lumbar region support as well some nice pressure relief which is something back sleepers would appreciate.

And for side sleepers like myself, I found that this bed’s medium-firm feel provides just the right amount of cushioning needed on my pressure points (shoulders and hips). But, I should mention that the 3D Matrix might be a bit too firm for lightweight (<130lbs) side sleepers and they should maybe opt for a softer mattress like the DreamCloud mattress.

Although the 3D Matrix has motion-transferring coils, the multiple foam layers do an excellent job of trapping surface motion where it starts, making it an amazing mattress for couples.

Now if you tend to overheat at night, this bed is a great choice for you as it’s equipped with a breathable coil support system, a cooling cover, and gel-infused memory foam that’s sure to give you a cool sleep experience.

Unfortunately for those of you shopping on a budget, the 3D Matrix is priced a bit high as opposed to other hybrid mattresses on the market. If you’re a budget shopper, you might want to go for a model with a more affordable price.

Firmness

After trying the 3D Matrix out, we gave it a 6 to 6.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The industry standard for medium-firm is a 6.5 out of 10, so this can be considered a medium to medium firm mattress.

Back sleeping on the Matrix 3D is really great as it provides that perfect balance of comfort and support. You’ll definitely feel more “on top” of this bed rather than “in” it. The upper comfort layers of foam are soft enough to allow for some hip sinkage, while the coils keep the spine supported in a healthy and neutral alignment. We definitely recommend this mattress to strict back sleepers as well as combination sleepers.

Average and heavy weight side sleepers should experience sufficient pressure relief around their shoulders and hips. Lightweight side sleepers however, may find the 3D Matrix too firm too properly contour around their bodies.

On the other hand, stomach sleepers may find the top layers a bit too soft to keep them lifted on top of the mattress. Proper hip alignment is very important for strict stomach sleepers as this prevents the development of lower back pain. If you sleep on your stomach, we suggest that you opt for a firmer mattress.

Construction

The Ghostbed 3D Matrix hybrid mattress consists of 7 layers including foam and coils. These materials together gives sleepers a fantastic experience by providing a perfect balance of comfort and support. At 13″ tall, the 3D Matrix is taller than an average bed-in-a-box mattress.

This mattress is quilted with a cooling cover made of proprietary Ghost Ice fabric. As the name suggests, it’s cool to the touch and is designed to dissipate heat from the top of the mattress. Below the mattress cover is a special gel polymer layer. The gel polymer functions by absorbing body heat and redistributing it across the mattress surface. This is what ensures this bed sleeps cool and it’s eco-friendly too.

Up next is a 2-inch layer of gel memory foam. As most of you know by now, this material has a slow response to pressure, which allows the sleeper to sink in for some nice pressure relief at the shoulders and hips. This layer also aids in active cooling as the gel-infusion helps dissipate heat.

Next off is a latex-like layer that balances out the conforming feel of the memory foam layer above. It helps prevent sleepers from feeling trapped in the upper layers and helps lift the sleepers up and out of the bed by providing a little extra bounce. Below this is a layer of transition foam which helps ease the sleeper down into the pocketed coils below and adds a bit more responsiveness to the mattress. If you prefer extra responsiveness, you might want to look into latex mattresses like the ones from Avocado.

As a hybrid mattress, its support core is made of individually wrapped coils. These springs are highly responsive, which gives the mattress some impressive bounce. They also help promote airflow throughout the mattress making it even more breathable.

And wrapping things up is a thin layer of high-density foam, which gives the 3D Matrix a sturdy and durable foundation.

I should point out though that this mattress needs a little more edge support. Heavier sleepers and stomach sleepers might find this mattress a bit too soft for their needs. That being said, we recommend a firmer mattress if you fall in those categories.

Sizes

The Ghostbed 3D Matrix comes in 5 sizes:

  • Twin XL (38″ x 80″ x 13″)
  • Queen (60″ x 80″ x 13″)
  • King (76″ x 80″ x 13″)
  • California King (72″ x 84″ x 13″)
  • Split King (38″ x 80″ x 13″)

Durability

Ghostbed offers a 101-night sleep trial period for you to determine if it’s the right mattress for you. Returns are simple and hassle-free.

In addition, the 3D Matrix mattress has a 25-year warranty that covers indentations over 1″ and splits or cracks in the foam.

Ghostbeds are made in the USA.

#4. Nolah Signature 12

Check Current Price | Best for Side Sleepers | Review

nolah signature 12 mattress
Nolah Signature 12

Pros:

  • Suitable for side sleepers
  • Great motion isolation
  • Cooling
  • Pressure-relieving
  • Flippable

Cons:

  • Not suitable for heavier individuals
  • Very little bounce
  • Stuck in the mud feel

Also known as the Nolah Signature 12, the Signature is Nolah’s flagship product. It’s made with the brand’s proprietary AirFoam™ and high density poly foam which combines the contouring of memory foam and the responsiveness of latex. It’s one of the more popular foam mattresses within the bed-in-a-box market and it’s an excellent bed for those of you seeking cushioning and a pressure-relieving feel. Keep reading to find out more about the Nolah Signature.

Who should buy the Nolah Signature?

  • Side sleepers
  • Couples
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who prefer the conforming hug feel of an all-foam mattress

We highly recommend the Signature for side sleepers. I’m a side sleeper myself and I felt some really nice relief at my hips and shoulders. This mattress should contour to side sleepers’ bodies pleasantly and provide a nice hugging feeling.

Couples should also be happy with this mattress since it has low motion transfer, which means that you’re unlikely to feel your partner moving at night.

The Signature is also a great choice for hot sleepers as its breathable Nolah AirFoam™ is designed to keep you cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses.

Firmness

Since the Nolah Signature is flippable, we found it to have different firmness levels on either side of the bed. One side is softer and the other is firm. We gave the softer side a 5 out 10 (medium-soft) on the mattress firmness scale, while the firm side is a 6 out of 10 (medium-firm). This basically provides you with two mattresses so you can choose which one is most comfortable for your specific body type and sleeping style. However, despite the different firmness level that either side has, this bed really offers a more “in” the bed feel than “on” it due to its layers of soft foam.

We think side sleepers will love this bed as it allows just the right amount of sinkage to provide some nice cushioning and relief at their pressure points. It also provides nice contouring so side sleepers should feel nice and comfortable sleeping on this bed.

I should mention that back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers of average to heavy weight may find the Signature a bit too soft for their liking. In this case, we suggest that they opt for hybrid mattresses that can provide them with the right level of support.

Construction

The Nolah Signature is a four-layer, double-sided all-foam mattress. It’s 12 inches tall and its foam layers consist of the brand’s proprietary AirFoam™, high resilience foam, and high-density poly foam.

The Signature is quilted with an organic cotton cover that helps wick away moisture. Its comfort layer is 2.5 inches of cooling Nolah AirFoam™, which has a slow response to pressure. It has the contouring feel of memory foam, but has more airflow than traditional memory foam.

Next up is 1.5 inches of Deep Supportive High-Resilience Foam to help soften up the comfort layer above it. Then comes the support layer which is made from 7 inches of high density foam, which gives the mattress some nice support and stops the sleeper from sinking too far into it.

And to top it all off, the Signature has another comfort layer made of 1 inch of Cooling Nolah AirFoam, which acts as the firmer side of the mattress.

I should also mention that Nolah is included on the CertiPUR-US list of companies that guarantees their products are free from formaldehyde and cancer-causing substances.

Sizes and Pricing

The Nolah Signature comes in 6 sizes:

  • Twin (39″ x 75″ x 12″)
  • Twin XL (39″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • Full (54″ x 75″ x 12″)
  • Queen (60″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • King (76″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • California King (72″ x 84″ x 12″)

Durability

Nolah offers a 120-night sleep trial for all their mattresses which is slightly longer than the 90-night sleep trial that many bed-in-a-box mattress companies offer, but it’s shorter than the average of new mattresses by comparison.

In addition, Nolah mattresses are also covered by a lifetime warranty, which is a nice perk for anyone worried about durability. All their mattresses are made in the USA.

#5. Puffy Lux

Check Current Price | Best Cooling Mattress | Review

puffy lux mattress on bed base
Puffy Lux

Pros:

  • Suitable for all sleeper types
  • Great motion isolation
  • Fairly responsive
  • Cooling

Cons:

  • Not suitable for strict stomach sleepers
  • Not suitable for individuals weighing over 230lbs
  • Price may be too high for budget shoppers

Last but not least in our best American-made mattresses list is the Puffy Lux. This hybrid model is an upgrade from Puffy’s original mattress as its pressure-relieving foams, advanced cooling technology, and medium firmness level is great for a variety of sleepers. The Puffy Lux combines super soft foam layers and individually pocketed coils for a cushioned feel with some bounce which is great for alleviating pain and providing much needed pressure relief. Find out more about this luxury mattress in our review below.

Who should buy the Puffy Lux?

  • Side and back combination sleepers
  • Couples
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who prefer a bed with a plusher feel
  • Those who suffer from chronic pain

Strict side sleepers should love the way the Puffy Lux cushions sensitive pressure points around the hips and shoulders. This can help alleviate pain for those who experience chronic body aches due to improper and uncomfortable sleeping habits.

We also think this bed should be a pretty good choice for back and combo sleepers. Although it’s on the softer side, the pocketed coils should provide ample support to help maintain a neutral spinal alignment. Heavier back sleepers on the other hand, may find this mattress a bit too soft and unable to give the strong support that they need around their spine and hips.

We wouldn’t recommend this mattress to strict stomach sleepers because it’s a pretty soft model and some people might find that their hips sink down too much into the bed and out of line with their shoulders. This could lead to the development of lower back pain which is something you would definitely want to avoid.

The mattress also has great motion isolation. This should be good news for couples who want to avoid being disturbed by their partner moving around on the bed at night.

Lastly, the Puffy Lux has cooling capabilities that should help keep you cool and moisture-free throughout the night. Hot sleepers would enjoy sleeping on this bed as its made with materials that are designed to provide plenty of cooling and airflow.

Firmness

After laying on it, we rated the Puffy Lux a 5.5 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale. The industry standard for medium-firm mattresses comes in at 6.5 out of 10, so the Puffy Lux falls into the medium-soft category.

This bed feels really soft and plush thanks to the foam layers on the top. It allows you to sink down into the mattress without putting too much pressure on your shoulders and hips. Some people though, especially heavier individuals and strict stomach sleepers, may find this mattress model too soft for their liking. The lack of solid support might lead their hips to sink into the bed and throw off their neutral spinal alignment which could cause lower back pain. We recommend looking into something like the Purple mattress if you are a heavier stomach sleeper.

We think this bed is best for strict side sleepers and light to average weight back and combo sleepers. It’s also a great option for couples due to its excellent motion isolation capabilities.

Construction

Being a hybrid model, the Puffy Lux contains layers of foam and pocketed coils. Puffy uses foams that are CertiPUR-US Certified, which means they’re free of harmful chemicals.

This mattress is quilted with a cover made of a thin polyester blend that is quite breathable, which helps boost cooling airflow throughout the night. Below the cover are two layers of polyurethane foam. The top layer is a Cooling Cloud foam and the second layer is Plush Dual Cloud foam. They offer the pressure-relieving feel of memory foam but are a little more breathable and responsive.

Next up is a transition layer of firmer support foam with a bit more bounce. The main function of this layer is to limit the deep sinkage of the top sections of foam and gradually ease the sleeper into the firmer support section below.

Below that is a firm core support layer which consists of pocketed coils, which provide some lift and bounce. These coils are individually wrapped, which helps regulate temperature and promote airflow. Finally, its base layer is made of high-density poly foam which provides the coils with a surface to press off of.

One thing we didn’t like about this mattress is that is does not have great edge support. This could be an issue for heavier sleepers (over 230 lbs.) especially. We suggest that they opt for a firmer mattress with more solid support. Budget shoppers may also find the Puffy Lux a bit costly and should maybe look for a model with a more affordable price.

Sizes and Pricing

The Puffy Lux Hybrid comes in 6 sizes:

  • Twin (39″ x 75″ x 12″)
  • Twin XL (39″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • Full (54″ x 75″ x 12″)
  • Queen (60″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • King (76″ x 80″ x 12″)
  • California King (72″ x 84″ x 12″)

Durability

Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial for all their mattresses. You can return your Puffy Lux mattress for a full refund during this window if you’re unhappy with how it feels.

All Puffy mattresses are also covered with a lifetime warranty.

All Puffy mattresses are made in the USA.

Why buy an American-made mattress?

There are many benefits to buying a USA-made mattress. I’ll be sharing a few good reasons below.

Firstly, American-made mattresses are of the best quality. American mattress manufacturers must comply with quality control and manufacturing regulations set by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. This means that a USA-made mattress is often built with better quality materials and will last longer than those made overseas.

Secondly, American-made mattresses are usually eco-friendly. U.S. mattress manufacturing regulations require companies to avoid chemicals that could be toxic to the environment and human health. Additionally, many U.S.-based manufacturing plants create less pollution than mattress factories in other countries.

And lastly, buying a U.S.-made mattress means you’re supporting your local economy. This means more jobs for Americans and a percentage of your purchase price going back into manufacturing American-made goods.
