In this day and age, it’s getting increasingly difficult to find a company that prides itself on producing quality craftsmanship and selling it at a price that is competitive but without a terribly high markup but Tuft and Needle’s pillow offerings provide exactly that: first rate pillows at prices that honestly reflect their costs. Tuft and Needle has two types of pillows on offer – the Original Foam Pillow and the Down Alternative Pillow.

Started in 2012 by two software engineers who wanted to shake up the mattress industry, Tuft and Needle began as an e-commerce website and through the years started branching out into brick and mortar stores across the country. In 2018, Serta Simmons Bedding, the world’s leading mattress manufacturer, merged with Tuft and Needle to bring together their combined knowledge spanning 220 years. By prioritizing the customer and crafting their products based on customer feedback, Tuft and Needle has struck a winning formula right at the dawn of the internet’s golden ages, and other companies have begun to follow suit.

Tuft & Needle pillow review: A matter of choice

Original foam pillow

The Original Foam Pillow is Tuft and Needle’s classic pillow offering that caters to all types of sleepers. Coming in both Standard and King sizes, the Original Foam Pillow is made with Tuft and Needle’s own trademarked  and CertiPur US tested Adaptive foam versus the usual memory foam (hence the Original moniker). Adaptive foam has more resilience than the traditional memory foam, so it bounces back to its original shape very quickly and is also more durable thus making it last a bit longer. Tuft and Needle utilizes an ‘open cell technology’ in their Original Pillows which then provides the cooling effect. The Original Foam Pillow also contains graphite and graphite has the ability to pull your body heat away from you as you sleep (which in “pillow talk” is termed heat wicking). As an added bonus, the Original Foam pillow also contains cooling gel beads that trap and pull heat away from you making this pillow ideal for those who tend to sleep hot. It also comes with a super soft, breathable outer cover made from a blend of micro polyamide and polyester that’s removable and machine washable.

The Original Foam Pillow has a loft of about 5 inches which goes down to about 2 inches when you lay your head on it. Most people have found it to be in that happy medium – firm enough for good neck and neck support but soft enough to be very comfortable.

Tuft and Needle offer a 100 night trial should you wish to try their Original Foam Pillow out as well as a 3 year limited warranty which covers any manufacturing defects in the outer cover, such as tearing or stitches unravelling or any physical flaws in the foam causing it to split or crack under the conditions of normal use.

The Original Foam Pillow Dimensions

  • Standard – 25″L X 16″W X 5″H
  • King – 34″L X 16″W X 5″H

  • Utilizes a trademarked Adaptive Foam technology which is more resilient than memory foam
  • Sleeps cool due to its open cell technology and heat wicking graphite
  • 100 night trial
  • 3 year limited warranty
  • On par with prices of brand name pillows in the market but offering better quality than some
  • Hypoallergenic

Down alternative pillow

Tuft and Needle also offer a Down Alternative Pillow, which comes in a set of two, for those of us who prefer the light (and fluffy) support of down over the weighty bounce of foam and is best for those of us who are side and back sleepers. Since time immemorial, down pillows have been the standard in luxury bedding but due to the advent of animal rights and veganism as well as a good number of people around the world developing allergies to various animal products and by-products, down alternative pillows were produced to cover the demand. While actual down is warm yet lightweight, down alternative is a polyester filling that mimics the heat-trapping properties of down, but it is even more lightweight than down.

Tuft and Needle’s Down Alternative Pillow has a 100% microfiber polyester filling with a 300-thread count cambric cotton shell and is vegan friendly and hypoallergenic making it ideal for those who suffer from allergies (either to goose/duck down or other allergens). Just like actual down pillows, down alternative pillows need fluffing to keep it in shape.

The entire pillow itself is machine washable and can also be professionally dry cleaned if you so prefer. Tuft and Needle offer a 100 night trial should you wish to try their Down Alternative Pillow as well as a 2 year limited warranty that covers any fabric fraying, ripping or pilling, seam splitting or tearing or any other product failure under conditions of normal use.

(Side note: While there are ethical practices currently in place for the sourcing of down and feathers, it’s best to do your own research when it comes to supporting companies that provide down pillows and products should you wish to purchase them.)

Down Alternative Pillow Dimensions

  • Standard Set – 20″ X 26″
  • King Set – 20″ X 36″

Pros:

  • Vegan friendly and hypoallergenic
  • Entire pillow is machine washable
  • Provides the same support (and cuddly comfort) of down pillows
  • Provides heat in colder temps
  • 100 night trial
  • 2 year limited warranty
  • Save the ducks and geese!

Cons:

  • Only comes as a set
  • Only suitable for colder climates
  • Can be pricey for some
  • May lose shape if not fluffed regularly
