Layla is another one of those new “mattress-in-a-box” companies that is differentiating itself by offering a flippable bed with a soft side and a firm side that you can switch between. The company is also differentiating their mattress through a beautifully unique design aesthetic that really makes it stand out from the competition.
Are these features just gimmicks or is the Layla really worth the money? In this review we’ll go over the features of the Layla mattress – firmness, warranty policy, free trial period, care and maintenance instructions, and more. We will also give you information about the company itself so that you’ll have access to all of the information you need to make your buying decision. As long as the information in this review helps you make you get the right bed for your needs then we consider our job well done, whether you ultimately decide on the Layla or one of the many other mattresses available today.
Is the Layla mattress right for you?
We recommend the Layla mattress for people who like to have the option to choose their own firmness setting. Since you can flip the Layla between a medium-soft side and a firm side, it’s great for people who like options.
It’s also great for people who enjoy the body-hugging feel of memory foam beds. Both sides of the Layla use memory foam construction so you can get that feeling of “sinking in” to the mattress rather than feeling like you’re laying on top of it.
If you’re the type of person who prefers a springier, more responsive feel then you should look elsewhere. Memory foam beds like the Layla are designed to let you sink in to the mattress. If you like the feeling of sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” it then we recommend that you go with an innerspring mattress like the Saatva instead.
You should buy the Layla mattress if you:
- Like to have options (Layla comes with a soft side and a firm side)
- Are average weight or lower
- Like the feeling of “sinking in” to your mattress
- Prefer memory foam beds
Features of the Layla mattress
Layla is a US-based mattress company that has been in business since 2016. They’re considered a “mattress-in-a-box” company, which means that they’re competing with rival offerings from brands like Puffy, DreamCloud, and Casper. They make a variety of sleep products like pillows, sheets, weighted blankets, bases, and more. Their flagship product is the Layla Memory Foam Mattress, which we will be focusing on in this review.
The Layla is a flippable mattress that features a soft side (3.5/10) and a firm side (7/10), so you can choose which side is most comfortable for you by simply flipping it over. This version of their bed is brand new, having been introduced to the market in 2019.
The soft side is constructed out of 3 inches of copper-infused memory foam supported by a secondary layer of convoluted polyfoam. The firm side features 1 inch of copper-infused memory foam on top of the polyfoam layer. The bed uses a shared support core that supports both sides made out of 4.5 inches of polyfoam. The mattress is finished with a polyester blend cover. These layers combine to give the Layla a total height of 10 inches.
Since the Layla is a flippable mattress it has a different feel depending on which side you sleep on. The side that’s labeled “soft” has a medium-soft feel corresponding to a 3.5/10 on the firmness scale and is great for stomach and side sleepers.. The “firm” side measures 7/10 on the firmness scale and is ideal for people who sleep on their back. This unique feature makes the Layla great for a variety of different sleeping positions.
The main difference between the sides is the feeling of “sinking in” to your mattress that you get from each one. The soft side gives you that body-hugging plush feel that makes you feel like you’re sleeping “in” the mattress. The firm side offers much more support and feels like you’re sleeping “on” the mattress. Both sides are great and the side you choose is ultimately up to your personal preferences.
As we previously mentioned, the Layla is a relatively new mattress. The company was just founded in 2016 and the current flagship mattress that they sell was created in 2019 so there is limited history that we can use to base our durability assessment on. Instead we’ll focus on the quality of materials that the company uses when constructing this mattress.
The premium memory foam and latex materials that the company uses when constructing this mattress gives it an expected lifespan of 7-10 years with regular use. Of course, memory foam mattresses are subject to indentation and body printing if you sleep on the same spot every night. If you rotate your bed from head-to-foot once or twice per year you can avoid this issue, which is only prevalent among heavier-weight individuals. If you’re lighter than average you likely won’t need to worry about this issue.
The Layla features a polyester blend cover with a unique hexagonal design that really makes this bed stand out from the competition on first glance. The cover has a zipper for easy removal and cleaning.
The comfort layers are directly underneath the cover and consist of memory foam construction. The soft side has a 3-inch top layer of copper-infused memory foam, while the firm side features 1-inch of the same material. The firm side is better for heavier weight people, while the soft side is better for you if you are average-weight or lower.
The soft side of this bed features a 2-inch transitional layer made out of convoluted polyfoam. This creates a buffer between the comfort layer and the firm support core. The firm side does not have a transitional layer, which gives you less body sinkage and more support.
The Layla has a shared support layer that provides structure and stability to both sides. This layer consists of 4.5 inches of high-density polyfoam to provide a stable base for the comfort layers on each side.
Since the Layla uses copper when constructing their memory foam comfort layers the bed has excellent temperature neutrality. Copper has natural cooling properties that help wick away heat and helps offset the warming properties of memory foam. The convoluted shape of the Layla makes it easier for air to circulate through the transitional polyfoam layer and helps disperse heat away from your body.
If you have a problem with overheating throughout the night, we recommend sleeping on the firm side. Since the soft side hugs your body and allows you to sink in deeper it’s more likely to trap heat. The firm side lacks that “body hugging” feature, allowing air to circulate more freely.
The Layla is available in all of the most common standard sizes:
- Twin XL
- California King
All of these beds feature a 10-inch profile which should fit perfectly on top of your box spring or foundation.
How much does the Layla mattress cost?
- Twin – $499
- Twin XL – $549
- Queen – $849
- King – $949
- California King – $949
Layla offers a lifetime warranty on their signature flagship mattress. This warranty covers the following:
- Sagging (more than 1 inch)
- Splitting or cracking of the foam
- Loss of mattress height
The warranty only applies if you buy from the official LaylaSleep.com website or one of their authorized marketplaces.
When you buy from an authorized retailer, Layla Sleep offers you a 120-night free trial on your mattress. If you don’t like your bed for any reason, contact the company and they will completely refund your purchase price. The don’t charge any shipping or restocking fees.
While you can return the mattress free of charge at any point in the first 120 nights after delivery, the company requests that you sleep on it for at least two weeks before initiating a return. This gives you time to get acclimated to your bed and gives the mattress time to break in.
