The Nolah Natural is an organic latex mattress that the company claims is “good for you and the environment”. I ran it through a series of hands-on performance tests to find out if it lives up to those claims. Here’s what I thought about it.

My experience with the Nolah Natural

My favorite thing about the Nolah Natural was how cool it slept.

This comes down to a combination of two factors: the natural cooling properties of latex (which retains SIGNIFICANTLY less heat than memory foam) and the airflow provided by the coil unit.

So I definitely recommend it for hot sleepers.

But aside from that, everything else about the mattress seems fairly average.

Yes, you get responsive support from the latex and coil combination, but if you’re a heavier-set side sleeper, you won’t exactly get the pressure relief you need.

The people who will benefit most from the Nolah Natural are back and stomach sleepers of average weight or less as the mattress’ firmer and bouncier surface provides just the right amount of support for the hips and back.

Another plus is that the Nolah Natural’s coil unit also helps you achieve proper spinal alignment.

Firmness

The Nolah Natural is around a 5-6 on the mattress firmness scale, depending on your body weight.

This means the mattress has a medium-to-medium-firm feel.

Testing Nolah Natural firmness level
The Nolah Natural has a medium-to-medium-firm feel

Usually, this firmness level is good for all sleeper types, but in the Nolah Natural’s case, it might just be a little too firm for petite side sleepers.

It’s best for those who sleep on either their stomachs or backs.

Even though it’s a hybrid, it only has three inches of comfort foam. This could be an issue for heavier-set sleepers since it won’t provide them with the support they need.

Cooling Test

We rate the Nolah Natural a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Pure latex is naturally cooling and hypoallergenic.

It doesn’t retain heat the way polyfoam does, and this allows you to sleep cool throughout the night.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Nolah Natural a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Motion test on the Nolah Natural
Latex is a naturally bouncy material, so motion isolation isn’t the greatest.

Unlike memory foam or polyfoam, latex is bouncy. This unfortunately means the mattress doesn’t absorb movement very well.

I experienced a significant amount of motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

That’s not a knock on Nolah by any stretch of the imagination. It’s just a natural feature associated with latex mattresses in general, not much the company (or any mattress company) can do to mitigate that.

Edge Support Test

We rate the Nolah Natural a 7 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Edge support is slightly above average.

Even though the mattress contains reinforced edge coils, its comfort layers are a little too thin.

I found the mattress to be just slightly above average when it comes to edge support.

Pressure Relief/Comfort Test

We rate the Nolah Natural a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

I recommend this mattress for back and stomach sleepers.

Had the Nolah Natural been a little softer, this rating would have been higher.

The mattress’ firmer feel is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers since it provides responsive support, meaning your hips and back won’t sink into the mattress.

When sleeping on my back or stomach, I also did not experience any stress on any of my main pressure points and I woke up feeling pain-free in my joints.

Construction

There are five layers in the Nolah Natural mattress. These layers come encased in an organic cotton cover that’s breathable and moisture-wicking.

The Nolah Natural is made from five (5) different layers.

The first layer is made up of a plant-based fiber blend that serves as a fiberglass-free fire retardant.

The main comfort layer is made up of certified organic Talalay latex that cushions the joints and offers both support and pressure relief.

The second comfort layer is also made up of organic latex foam but it is firmer and denser than the first. This helps provide support and acts as a transition layer.

The coil unit is made up of 8-inch Ascension coils that help provide targeted and zoned support. The coil unit also helps with proper spinal alignment.

The base is made up of another layer of fiber blend which is thicker and helps provide stability to the entire mattress.

The Nolah Natural mattress is made entirely in the USA.

Durability

Nolah mattresses are made with premium, high quality materials that are meant to last a long time and the Natural is no different.

The Nolah Natural’s 5 layered construction is built to last a long time especially with proper mattress care and maintenance.

Where to buy the Nolah Natural mattress

The best place to purchase the Nolah Natural mattress is from Nolah’s official website.

I always recommend buying directly from the manufacturer whenever possible because it ensures that you get full customer service and warranty support, which isn’t always the case when buying from third parties.

Conclusion

Cooling is the standout feature of the Nolah Natural.

It did phenomenally in my cooling tests, retaining virtually zero measurable heat.

All other features (edge support, motion isolation, pressure relief) were average-to-slightly-above-average.

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper of average weight who prefers latex: you’ll be very satisfied with this mattress.

If you’re a side sleeper or overweight: look elsewhere.
