One Pillow to fit them all

Heads, like every other human being’s different body parts, come in different shapes and sizes, that’s a fact. I, for instance, have a bit of a larger head than most (thanks Mom, ily!). In recent years, there has been a quite overwhelming influx of pillows popping up in the market that all claim to be anti-wrinkle and anti-aging. Although also coming in a myriad of shapes and sizes, they however, are a bit of a one size fits all kinda deal. But not the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle Beauty Pillow.

The brainchild of Helene Sheeler-Johnson, a strategic marketing expert by trade; the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle was first introduced in 2014. Helene, back in her late 20s, tried to train herself to begin sleeping on her back after realizing that due to years of sleeping on her back and stomach, she would find herself waking up to unsightly bags under her eyes. Studies have shown that those who sleep consistently on their backs reap the benefits of lesser sleep wrinkles , a decrease in facial fluid buildup, better spinal alignment and maximum absorption of nightly topical treatments. Those who have undergone facial surgery and are explicitly required to sleep on their backs can  also benefit greatly from pillows such as the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle.

As with anyone who has tried to consistently sleep on  their backs throughout the night and failed, Helene realized it was harder than she thought it would be. She then began rigging her pillows to try and create a way to cradle her head and neck. She also sought out the pillow offerings in the market at the time and tried countless pillows that claimed to help back sleepers stay stable throughout the night, but everything she tried fell short of her needs and expectations. She needed something to help her stay asleep on her back and at the same time, she wanted something snug and comfortable (imagine: sleeping in the arms of your favorite teddy bear). And thus was born the concept for the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle Pillow.

A concept come to life

After years of testing out more than eight different prototypes and consulting with various experts in the fields of Health and Wellness, Textiles as well as Beauty, the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle was released to rave reviews. With a patented compact design, the pillow measures 15.2 x 5.5 x 12 inches and weighs just under 2 pounds –  quite tiny compared to its competitors but don’t be fooled by its diminutive size, the Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Head Cradle packs a punch. Quite fitting since as per the instructions included with the pillow upon purchase (and available via video through their website), a bit of thwacking it about is needed to conform the pillow to your desired comfort level depending on head size. It can be a little facetious to think that an object as simple as a pillow needs to come with instructions but it is the 21st century, my friends, everything comes with instructions.

The instructions, aptly named “Comfort Zone”,  are fairly straightforward: break in your new pillow (there’s a bit of unexpected catharsis in hitting the pillow, not gonna lie); ensure that the ‘crescent’ top of the pillow is identified (it’s those two unmistakeable, kidney shaped, mint green beans which are designed to snugly cradle the head, bit hard to miss); explore other comfort options such as: should you prefer more open support (and are deathly claustrophobic as I am), then you can flip the pillow over, kidney crescents down and it can still provide the support you need in the comfort level that works for you. The pillow can also be used in several positions, alone or on top of other pillows for added elevation and support. Find your comfort zone, and then zone out.

The Pillow is foam free and utilizes a hypoallergenic down-alternative filling and here’s something that not many offer: pillowcases! The Back to Beauty Anti-Wrinkle Cradle comes with not one but three pillowcases when you purchase it – “Fitted Plush”, “Satin Smooth” and “Crisp Cotton” – all removable for easy washing. Bear in mind though, that some people have found that the foam free filling to be harder than what they’re used to so that might be something to consider.

One thing that is of note is that Back to Beauty is delightfully refreshing in the fact that they realize and appreciate that using the pillow for the first time may not come as easy right off the bat, that it takes time to get used to and ultimately, may not be for everyone (we do stan a transparent queen!). Bonus points: you can contact Helene directly via the company website should you have any questions or concerns.

How the Back to Beauty pillow works
How the Back to Beauty pillow works

Yay or Nay

Pros:

  • All natural and non invasive skincare
  • Can help with spinal alignment
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • 3 pillow cases to choose from come with purchase
  • Compact and can be used when traveling
  • Transparency and open communication with company

Cons:

  • Crescents can a bit claustrophobic inducing if one’s head is on the larger side of the spectrum
  • Overall pillow size may be a bit too small for some
  • Cost may be a bit too high compared to other offerings in the market with the same price point but with a bigger product
  • The foam free, down-alternative may feel too poufy and hard for those who are used to memory foam
  • Name is a mouthful but this is just me being petty

Pillow Fight

With all the offerings in the market currently for anti-wrinkle pillows, it’s beginning to feel like being in the middle of Ragnarok – only with feathers and memory foam as weapons (and hopefully Thor pre-Endgame).

Does one really need a special type of pillow to be able to sleep on one’s back? No. But it would be nice to have even just a little bit of help and Zeus only knows some of us really need it (i.e. me). But… should you feel lost and confused, wandering around the middle of the rainbow bridge, always remember that ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether you want it or not.

As for me, I’m off to the Nine Realms of sleep.
