PepsiCo – a company that is synonymous with caffeine-infused sodas – just announced a new drink that’s designed to help you fall asleep.
Driftwell is a drink that PepsiCo is planning to infuse with l-theanine, a sleep supplement and amino acid that promotes restfulness. L-theanine is found naturally in green tea and is an FDA-approved supplement for relaxation.
“The need for relaxation has only increased during the pandemic,” said Emily Silver, PepsiCo’s vice president of innovation and capabilities.
Why is Pepsi launching a new drink to help with sleep?
The sugar-packed sodas that PepsiCo built it’s fortunes on are on their way out as consumers switch to healthier beverages. Driftwell is part of the company’s “functional” category of beverages that are designed to help consumers with specific lifestyle needs.
The soda industry is definitely shifting. Competing companies like Coca-Cola are experimenting with alcohol and CBD-infused drinks in an attempt to regain market share. According to Silver, PepsiCo is not planning to launch any CBD or alcohol-infused products. You’ll be able to buy Driftwell online in the fourth quarter of 2020 and in stores in 2021.
New York-based PepsiCo has seen revenues decline since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Government mandated lockdowns have shut off their live entertainment and restaurant revenue streams. This has been partially offset by increased sales of the company’s snack brands like Tostitos, Cheetos, Fritos, and Quaker breakfast foods as consumers switch to eating at home more frequently.
