The most comfortable mattresses aren’t the ones that are the softest or the plushiest, nor are they made from a single component alone such as memory foam. A firmer mattress can be just as comfortable as a softer one. It all comes down to to two things: your sleeping position and your body weight. The most comfortable mattresses, just like the best mattresses, are the mattresses that give you the ultimate pressure relief, no matter what sleeping preference or weight you may have. Our Editor’s Choice is Nest Bedding’s Certified Organic All-Latex mattress.

What is the Most Comfortable Mattress?

  1. Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex – editor’s choice
  2. Airweave Mattress Advanced – best for hot sleepers
  3. Molecule Hybrid – best for back and stomach sleepers
  4. Amerisleep AS5 – best for side sleepers
  5. WinkBeds EcoCloud – best for heavier individuals

Nest Bedding Certified Organic All Latex mattress
Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex Mattress

Pros and cons

Certified Organic and sustainableNot suitable for heavier individuals
No stuck in the mud feelCan be a bit too pricey
Comes in two firmness options

Latex mattresses are well-liked because of their unique feel in terms of firmness and responsiveness. They are also an excellent option for those who suffer from allergies as latex is naturally hypoallergenic. Also, unlike memory foam mattresses, latex mattresses do not trap body heat, making it a good choice for hot sleepers.

The mattress materials used in Nest Bedding’s All-Latex mattress are certified organic by both GOTS and GOLS. Nest Bedding’s mattresses are also certified by UL Greenguard Gold, one of the hardest certifications to acquire in the mattress industry. You are assured not only of its quality but also of its safety, making it a great mattress for kids as well.

Who should buy the Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex mattress?

  • All sleeper types including back and stomach sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Couples
  • Those who share a bed with their children
  • Allergy sufferers
  • Those who prefer a more responsive bed
  • Those who prefer a fully organic mattress

The Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex mattress comes in two firmness options, a Medium and a Firm. This means it can accommodate all types of sleep positions – from side sleepers and combination sleepers to back and stomach sleepers. This also makes it a good bed for couples.

Comfort and firmness levels go hand in hand but everyone has a different definition of what comfort is. Mattress firmness is very subjective and one’s body weight and sleeping positions can affect how a mattress truly feels. Heavier individuals may find a firm mattress to be a touch softer while those who are more petite may find a medium firm mattress to be firmer. This is why those who weigh over 250 lbs should always opt for hybrid mattresses over all-foam mattresses, as a combination of foam and spring coils could give them the support that they need.

I weigh 61kg and I found the Medium firmness level to be a true medium feel – neither too soft nor too hard. On the mattress firmness scale, the Medium would be a 5 while the Firm would be around an 8 to an 8.5.

Being an all-foam mattress, the Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex mattress is made up of two thick layers of latex foam. Nest Bedding utilizes certified organic 100% natural Dunlop latex in all of their mattresses as Dunlop latex takes lesser energy and resources to produce, this making it better for the environment.

The top comfort layer of the Nest Bedding All-Latex mattress uses a latex foam method called the continuous pour. This ensures an even firmness all throughout. One of the great things about this layer is that Nest Bedding gives you the option to switch out the comfort layer for either a softer option or a firmer option than what you originally purchased. Switching out the comfort layer is also an excellent idea for when, down the line, after having used the mattress for however many years, you can refresh the top layer and make your mattress feel new again. Switching also helps decrease waste and is a more sustainable option to replacing your entire mattress every couple of years.

The base layer of the Nest Bedding All-Latex mattress is also made up of latex, but a denser, firmer kind. This helps keep the mattress stable while helping provide better spinal alignment and support.

Both latex foam layers of the Nest Bedding All-Latex mattress are studded with minute air holes which allows for better air circulation. This is especially important if you find yourself sleeping hot often.

The Nest Bedding All-Latex mattress also features a blend of GOTS certified organic wool and GOTS certified organic cotton cover. This breathable organic cotton cover features a heavily quilted mattress surface, upping the mattress’ comfort and plush level exponentially. This plus the top comfort layer provided good pressure relief without making us feel as though we were being swallowed up by the bed.

The soft, quilted cover plus the thick foam layers made the Nest Bedding All-Latex mattress feel like a bed that belonged in a 5-star hotel. Its thick stitching also contributed to the mattress strong edges. On par with most high-end all-foam mattresses, we found the edge support of the All-Latex mattress to be very good. We certainly felt well supported even while sleeping close to the very edge.

Despite its all-foam construction, we experienced no off-gassing nor any new mattress smell. If anything, because of its natural and organic mattress materials, we found the bed to smell rather clean and earthy – in a good way. Organic latex is also naturally hypoallergenic, making it a great option for those who suffer from mild allergies.

The only bad thing about this mattress would have to be its price range – if you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, you may want to look into DreamCloud mattresses.

The Nest Bedding Certified Organic All-Latex mattress comes in 6 sizes and measures 10 inches in thickness. It is compatible with most bed frames, foundations and bed bases, including an adjustable base.

All of Nest Bedding’s mattresses are American made with American-sourced materials. Each bed is made to order and would take 6-7 weeks to be ready.

Nest Bedding offers a 100 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses. Nest Bedding also suggests that if you find yourself not liking the firmness level you chose, you may switch out just the comfort layer to the firmness level you prefer. They also recommend rotating your mattress every few months for even wear. That said, Nest Bedding offers a lifetime warranty for all of their mattresses – a testament to just how much they invest in the quality and durability of their products.

#2. Airweave Mattress Advanced

Check Current Price | Best for Hot Sleepers

couple on airweave advanced bed
Airweave Advanced

Pros and cons

CoolingNot suitable for heavier individuals
Unique responsive feelCan be a bit too thin for some

A subtle nod to the Japanese futon sleep culture as well as Japanese minimalism, Airweave mattresses are made from AirFiber – exclusive only to Airweave mattresses. AirFiber is an intermarriage of both fiber resin (like those used in fishing lines) and air, air fiber is light, airy and buoyant. Which is why it works so well as a mattress.

The brainchild of Motokuni Takaowa, Airweave began as a fishing line company in Japan. Throughout the years of experimenting and perfecting different applications to create a strong yet whisper thin fishing line, he also discovered that the very same material he used to create fishing lines could also be used as foam alternative for mattresses.

Lighter, airier and inherently stronger than foam, Airweave mattresses have now become one of the most favored mattresses among elite athletes and high-end hotels around the world.

Who should buy the Airweave Mattress Advanced?

  • Those who lead (or want to lead) a more sustainable lifestyle
  • Athletes
  • Those who suffer from back pain
  • Those who seek alternatives to memory foam mattresses
  • All sleeper types
  • Those who sleep hot
  • Those who prefer a more responsive and supportive mattress

The Airweave Mattress Advanced comes in 3 firmness levels to choose from: Soft, Moderate and Firm. Softer mattresses are great for strict side sleepers while firm mattresses offer more support to back and stomach sleepers. Back sleepers in particular, need a firmer sleep surface that’s also a comfortable mattress. The Medium option of the Airweave Advanced mattress is a great choice for couples with varying sleeping positions.

On the mattress firmness scale, the Medium Airweave Advanced sat on a 5.5 while the Soft felt more like a 3 to 4 and the Firm felt like a solid 8. Although the Airweave Advanced mattress is not what we’d necessarily call an all-foam mattress, it isn’t quite a hybrid mattress either hence why those who weigh significantly heavier than 250 lbs. may not get the extra support that they would need in the long term.

For all intents and purposes, the Airweave Advanced mattress is actually a firm mattress at its very core. You can, however, customize the mattress firmness levels to suit your needs and preferences.

The Airweave Advanced mattress is equipped with 3 dual mode AirFiber blocks which can be mixed and matched and then rearranged to the firmness level pattern that suits your body type. Working in a way like zoned support mattresses do, you may, for example, opt for a softer block on your shoulder and head area while choosing a firmer block for your hips and lower back if you are a side sleeper.

A customizable mattress allows you to choose the best and most comfortable sleep surface made just for you. You also have the option to add either 1 or 2 pillowtop layers to turn your Airweave Advanced mattress plush soft. All these can be configured before purchase through a proprietary app that Airweave has on both Apple and Android products.

Because of its woven construction, the AirFiber blocks offer extra cooling and temperature regulation as it allows air to pass freely all throughout the entire mattress. This makes it a good choice for those who tend to sleep exceptionally hot. Traditional memory foam, on the other hand, tends to trap heat thus making your sleep experience doubly uncomfortable.

Instead of one solid rectangular block as traditional mattresses often come in, the Airweave Advanced mattress comes in three blocks or squares. While this means that they come shipped in three separate medium-sized boxes, it also means that they will be easy to disassemble and move around or ship. If you are someone who moves frequently, an Airweave mattress might just prove convenient for your nomadic lifestyle.

The AirFiber blocks or comfort layers of the Airweave Advanced mattress are encased in a breathable mattress cover that also helps wick away heat. Both the mattress cover and the AirFiber blocks can be removed and separated. All parts of the Airweave Advanced mattress are machine washable. This ensures that your mattress stays clean and fresh all the time, lengthening its lifespan.

The AirFiber construction may take some getting used to, especially for first time users of Airweave mattresses. Not unlike the somewhat disconcerting feel of Purple mattresses‘ Purple Grid, the AirFiber blocks offer a buoyant yet pressure-relieving support. Those who do get used to the feel of the mattress though end up falling in love with it. It didn’t take us long to get used to how the Airweave Advanced mattress feels.

We found that the motion isolation on the Airweave Advanced to be fairly good, even for a mattress that’s made from air and fiber. Those who share a bed will not find any issues of any motion transfer, unless they have a partner who literally hops in and out of bed. For those who share a bed with a partner who has a rabbit for a spirit animal, we suggest something like the Layla memory foam mattress.

We did any experience any instances of off-gassing with the Airweave Advanced mattress although upon unboxing the AirFiber blocks, we did get whiffs of something plasticky. This is simply due to the materials used in Airweaves proprietary AirFiber technology. We found that this dissipated within a day or two.

The Airweave Advanced mattress comes in 6 different sizes, including a King size mattress. It measures 11 inches in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and foundations. It is not, however, compatible with an adjustable bed base.

#3. Molecule Hybrid

Molecule Hybrid

Pros and cons

Offers responsive supportNot suitable for strict side sleepers
CoolingMay be a bit too thick for some
Great for heavier individuals

If you weigh over 230 lbs and have a tendency to sleep hot, then you might want to look into getting the Molecule Hybrid mattress.

Made with cooling proprietary memory foam alternatives and a coil unit that features individually wrapped coils, the Molecule Hybrid offers ten times more than the traditional innerspring mattresses of the past.

Who should buy the Molecule Hybrid?

  • Heavier individuals
  • Hot sleepers
  • Stomach and back sleepers
  • Those who prefer a more responsive bed

The Molecule Hybrid sits on a 6-8 on the firmness scale, making it a medium firm to firm mattress. This makes it the perfect option and the right mattress for both strict back sleepers and stomach sleepers. It is not suitable for strict side sleepers as sleeping on a firm mattress would only exacerbate any pressure point issues they might have.

Some side sleepers could opt to use softer mattress toppers to help make their mattress comfortable but we find that a mattress topper can only do so much. We suggest a soft mattress such as the Saatva Hybrid for heavier individuals who sleep primarily on their sides.

As a 61 kg mostly stomach sleeper, I found the medium firm feel of the Molecule Hybrid comfortable and supportive, particularly around my hip and lower back area.

All of Molecule mattresses feature a zoned support layer which they call their RecoveryFlo. Divided into 5 zones, every zone delivers self-adjusting support from head to toe while also helping provide good pressure relief, just like pressure-relieving memory foam.

The top layer of the Molecule Hybrid is made up of MolecularFlo, another one of Molecule’s own proprietary foam that allows 5 times more air flow than regular gel memory foam. Right underneath the top comfort layer of the Molecule Hybrid lies AirTec, another one of Molecule mattresses’ proprietary tech that also helps provide 5 times more air flow than regular memory foam mattresses, helping those who sleep hot stay cooler throughout the night. Although not the best cooling mattress we have tried, the Molecule Hybrid still does a great job at helping hot sleepers stay cool.

The coil unit of the Molecule Hybrid mattress mattress makes up 6 inches of the entire mattress. Made up of individually wrapped coils, these pocketed coils adapt to your weight and reacts to the pressure, providing enhanced support and personalized pressure relief. This is helpful, especially for those who suffer from chronic back and neck pain.

The coil system also features strong edge support with an extra layer of coil support, so those who find themselves sleeping on the edge of the mattress won’t feel any danger of rolling off the edge.

The base layer is made up of high density polyfoam that helps with foam firmness while helping provide a sturdy base as well as helping provide better spinal alignment.

All these layers come encased in a breathable mattress over that features a plush quilted top. The cover is also treated with Microban, a treatment that helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew while helping wick away moisture.

Most hybrid mattresses that we have tried do provide great motion isolation, largely due to the pocketed coils. Compared to traditional innerspring mattresses, individually wrapped coils help prevent motion transfer and the coil unit of the Molecule Hybrid did a great job at deadening cross mattress motion.

All of the foam layers of the Molecule Hybrid are CertiPUR US certified and we experienced no instances of off-gassing of any kind.

The Molecule Hybrid mattress comes in 6 sizes, including a California King. It measures 13 inches tall and is compatible with most bed bases, frames and foundations, including a zero gravity bed.

Molecule provides a 100 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses. Once you decide you want to commit, Molecule backs up their mattresses with lifetime warranty.

#4. Amerisleep AS5

amerisleep as5 on a simple bed base
Amerisleep AS5

Pros and cons

Suitable for heavier individualsNot for back and stomach sleepers
Comes in both an all-foam and hybrid versionsCan be a bit too thick for some
No stuck in the mud feel

The softest out of Amerisleep’s 5 mattress lineup, the AS5 comes in both an all-foam version and hybrid version, making it a good option for sleepers of any weight and body shape who prefer a cloud-like mattress surface.

Bear in mind that soft mattresses are not suitable for strict back and stomach sleepers, no matter the weight or body shape.

Although soft does not always mean comfort when it comes to mattresses, Amerisleep’s AS5 softness means superior pressure relief, making it a good choice for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.

Who should buy the AS5?

  • Those who suffer from chronic pain
  • Those who prefer softer mattresses
  • Side sleepers and some combination sleepers
  • Couples with similar sleeping styles
  • Those who prefer mattresses that are thicker

As mentioned previously, the AS5 is Amerisleep’s softest mattress they offer. Although soft, it still provides enough support with its zoned support system.

Coming in both an all-foam mattress (without springs) and a hybrid mattress, this is one of our favourite features from Amerisleep as it allows you more options for a more personalized sleeping experience.

If you are a strict stomach or back sleeper then you should probably stop right here as the AS5 won’t be able to give you the proper support that your back and hips would need. The AS5 was made for those who sleep on their sides as well as combination sleepers who primarily sleep on their sides.

A few of our team members have chosen the AS5 as their main mattress and they describe sleeping on the Amerisleep AS5 as cloud-like. Amerisleep does use proprietary foam as their memory foam alternative which unlike their more archaic counterpart, is a more responsive foam. There is definitely no stuck in the mud feel with the AS5.

The Amerisleep AS5 offers excellent motion isolation, although the hybrid version may be slightly bouncier just like an innerspring mattress would be. Our team members have also found the AS5’s edge support to be slightly mediocre compared to other memory foam mattresses from online mattress brands.

Aside from being the softest, the AS5 is also Amerisleep’s thickest mattresses, measuring a whopping 14 inches in thickness. If you want a comfortable memory foam mattress that would look right at home in a 5-star hotel, then this might just be the mattress for you.

Similar to cooling gel memory foam, the foam construction of the AS5 is made with Amerisleep’s own tech, which they call BioPur. BioPur is made with plant-based, renewable materials, making it better for you as well as the environment. It also lessens the chance of any off-gassing. There might be a slight, new mattress smell when you first receive the mattress but this can easily be remedied by airing out the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a day or two.

It also has a quicker response time than regular memory foam, allowing sleepers to shift positions without any trouble at all. It is also open-celled, meaning it allows for better air circulation, keeping the mattress cool and fresh for longer.

The AS5 mattress also comes with an ActiveFlex layer, which both the all-foam and hybrid version have. ActiveFlex is part of the AS5 mattress’ comfort layers which help contribute to the mattress’ responsiveness without compromising its softness.

The AS5 Hybrid’s support layer is comprised of individually wrapped coils. Coils also offer flexible cushioning to promote healthier spinal alignment and further helps sleepers from sinking into the bed. Amerisleep hybrid mattresses also work well in preventing heat retention as the coils allow air to circulate throughout the entire mattress.

All of Amerisleep’s mattress also feature a HIVE transition layer. This layer contains the zoned support that offers enhanced support in all areas of the body no matter the sleep position. It helps alleviate pressure from all the main pressure points as well as helps promote better spine alignment.

Keeping all the layers of the AS5 together is Amerisleep’s BioCore, a high density polyfoam base that also helps prevent premature mattress sagging. The AS5 comes encased in a soft, breathable cotton cover that’s removable and machine washable.

The AS5 mattress comes in 7 different sizes. It measures 14 inches in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames, bases and foundations including an adjustable bed base.

The AS5 comes with a risk-free 100 night sleep trial, which is pretty standard for most bed in a box brands. Amerisleep offers a 20 year warranty for all of their mattresses as well as free shipping within the continental United States.

Who should buy the WinkBeds EcoCloud?

  • All sleeper types
  • Both heavier set and lightweight individuals
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who prefer an organic, more ecologically conscious bed
  • Those who prefer a more responsive bed
  • Hot sleepers

On the firmness scale, the WinkBeds EcoCloud lies firmly on a 5 to 5.5, making it a true medium feel. This makes it the perfect mattress for all sleeper types, including lightweight stomach sleepers as well as heavier set combination sleepers.

The soft quilted cover does add a layer of plushness to the EcoCloud Hybrid, making it lean a little towards plush soft. This makes it an excellent choice for those who suffer from issues such as back pain and arthritis.

Because it is a hybrid, it can also offer better support to those who weigh over 250 lbs. If you’re a heavier set individual who prefers a firmer hybrid innerspring mattress, you might want to look into getting the Bear Hybrid mattress.

For a mattress that packs quite a punch, there are technically only 2 layers in the WinkBed EcoCloud Hybrid. For its top comfort layers, the EcoCloud Hybrid features a layer of premium Talalay latex that offers firmer support in the lower back and lumbar area while offering softer support around the shoulders.

Talalay latex is also naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, making the EcoCloud a good choice for allergy sufferers. It is more responsive than memory foam and when coupled with the coil unit makes for a unique sleeping experience that never lets you feel as though you are being swallowed up by the bed.

WinkBeds supports sustainability and utilizes recycled steel for their coil system which also makes up the bed’s support core. Each spring coil is individually wrapped which helps provide good motion isolation. I sleep with a 17 lb cat and I barely felt any of his 2am zoomies.

The pocketed coils of the EcoCloud Hybrid are also tempered 3 times. This not only makes it more durable but helps provide more enhanced support for heavier areas of the body. The coil system also features a proprietary Extra-Edge Anti-Sag support system which reinforces the mattress’ edge support while helping avoid mattress sag.

All these layers come encased in a blend of organic cotton and 100% organic New Zealand wool cover that helps provide temperature regulation. Wool is also a natural flame retardant and WinkBeds never utilize any chemicals or fiberglass as their fire barriers.

All of WinkBeds’ mattresses are OEKO-TEX certified and the EcoCloud Hybrid is also certified by both the GOTS and the Rainforest Alliance.

  • Your preferred sleeping position
  • Your weight and body type
  • Whether you sleep hot or cold
  • Whether you share a bed

The best way to find out of a mattress is comfortable is to try it out for yourself and we don’t mean a 15 minute tumble in a mattress showroom. It takes approximately 3 months to get used to how a bed feels and most mattress in a box brands offer risk free sleep trials that extend beyond this time frame. We suggest taking advantage of the sleep trials to find out the most comfortable mattress for you.

Making your sleep environment more comfortable

A few tips on how to make your sleep environment more comfortable:

  • Choose the right mattress for your sleep position and body type
  • Invest in premium quality bedding
  • You can up the cozy factor of your room by adding a weighted blanket (this is especially good in colder climates)
  • Down and Down alternative pillows are not only luxurious but offer good support
  • The ideal sleep temperature is an even 65 degrees Celsius
  • Bedrooms should be free from electronic devices, bright lights and if you can live without a TV in your bedroom, all the better
  • Candles and aromatherapy oil burners not only add ambience but help with relaxation (always make sure to snuff candles out before actually sleeping)

Which type of mattress is the best for comfort?

Both all-foam and hybrid mattresses can offer utmost comfort, it all depends on your needs and preferences.

Which type of mattress is softest?
