Are you looking through mattress-in-a-box companies, trying to find a new mattress for yourself or your loved ones? That’s not an easy task, because you can never know what you’ll get until it arrives in front of your doorstep.

Bear and ZenHaven are both US-made mattresses, produced by online-based companies, so you need to conduct thorough internet research before opting for either one of them. If you are lucky enough to live in Hoboken, NJ or New York, NY, you can visit the Bear showrooms. ZenHaven doesn’t have any showrooms so far.

Although both have received praise from customers, here are some of the most obvious differences between the two mattresses – Bear is more affordable and uses a number of synthetic materials in its construction while ZenHaven is more than twice the price which it makes up for with all-natural materials.

Check out the table below to see the main differences between the Bear and ZenHaven mattresses and read on for a more in-depth comparison.

Construction Comparison

Bear Construction

The Bear mattress (and here we’re not describing the Bear Hybrid and Bear Pro Mattress, just the most popular model) is entirely made of foam, with a Celliant and Polyester blend cover. It only comes in one level of firmness, which is medium (5.5/10 on the firmness scale).

Bear is primarily marketed to people who are physically active because of the Celliant fabric. It is special because it converts the heat energy from the body into infrared energy which is then sent back to the body. This helps the tissues to recover after a workout.

The first layer below the cover is a memory foam comfort layer. This two-inch layer is made of graphite memory foam. To ensure you don’t get too hot, they infused it with cooling gel.

The second layer is made of polyfoam. It is a transitional two-inch layer that makes the mattress feel more comfortable.

The final and thickest layer consists of very dense polyfoam. This 6-inch layer offers support and stability to the entire mattress.

The Bear mattress is made to be used on one side – the one with a comfort layer. Although it offers good support to the body, the Bear can’t boast about strong edge support.

ZenHaven Construction

ZenHaven is a mattress that, unlike Bear, can be flipped. This means you can use both sides of the mattress. It has slightly different comfort layers on each side which gives you the option to enjoy changing the firmness from time to time or simply choosing the one that works the best for you.

Let’s start with the cover – it is made of organic cotton. Cotton itself is unlikely to hold microbes, but to make it even more hypoallergenic, the manufacturer treated the cover for extra antimicrobial properties. Just below the cover is a one-inch layer of wool.

Next is the Talalay latex comfort layer of 1.5-inch in thickness. The comfort layer is divided into five zones, offering a different type of support in each part of the body. For example, hips will get more support than the head and feet. The difference between the two sides of the mattress begins with this layer. Although everything we said above applies to both sides, one side uses a medium-soft latex, and one uses firmer latex.

Finally, there’s a support layer also made of Talalay latex. The entire core is 6 inches high, with 3 inches of softer latex facing the soft side of the mattress and 3 inches of harder latex on the other side.

Don’t expect a huge difference – this is still one single mattress and all its layers work together to support your body. However, there is a noticeable difference that makes it useful for those who need a very specific level of firmness.

Customer Service Comparison

Bear warranty and trial period

Bear mattress is under a 10-year warranty which is significantly less than what most companies offer. It covers any visible indentations made from usage (but not if the damage was caused by the bed frame you’re using) and any flaws that cause the foam to split or crack.

During the first 10 years, Bear will repair the mattress but will not cover the handling and transportation expenses. You must be the original owner of the mattress.

The mattress cover is only warranted for one year.

The free trial period lasts for 100 nights, which is standard in the industry. During this time you can return it for free and the company will make sure it is donated to a charity.

ZenHaven warranty and trial period

ZenHaven offers 20-years of warranty. Should there be any defects during the first two years, you’ll have your bed replaced with a new one. After two years have passed, the company will repair the mattress and replace the cover, but you’ll have to pay a $99 transportation fee to and from them.

The company has a Fairness Replacement Option policy that you can opt for. This policy gives you an option to buy a new mattress at a lower price instead of having it repaired after two years. Here is the price reduction you can get if the mattress proves to be defective and you decide to get a new one:

  • within 3-5 years of use – 30% of the original price
  • within 6-10 years of use – 50% of the original price
  • within 11-20 years of use – 75% of the original price

On top of that, you will get to keep your original mattress and will not have to pay any fees (such as transportation fees) for the new one.

You can sleep on ZenHaven for 120 nights. During this period you can request a full refund if you’re not happy with the mattress, but you will be charged a $99 transportation fee.
