ZenHaven is an all-latex flippable mattress from Saatva that is available in two different firmness options: Luxury Plush (4/10 firmness level) and Gentle Firm (7/10). The Talaylay latex construction does a great job of providing pressure relief and contouring support, based on our extensive testing.
You may already be familiar with Saatva’s other mattresses (innerspring, hybrid, and memory foam) as well as their pillows and other accessories. The ZenHaven is less well-known but is actually marketed as their premium, high-end brand.
In this review we’ll cover everything you need to know about the ZenHaven mattress: construction, support, cooling capabilities, shipping and return policies, and more. We’ll also compare it to other similar brands so you can make the best possible decision when shopping for your next bed.
Is the ZenHaven a good choice for you?
Based on our testing process and feedback from real customers, we recommend the ZenHaven for back sleepers. We think back sleepers will love this bed because it offers a large amount of support and pressure relief. If you’re a side or stomach sleeper we think that the soft side may be good for you but there are better options out there for those sleeping positions.
We also think that the ZenHaven is great for people who sleep hot. If you frequently wake up in the middle of the night due to overheating, you’ll definitely like the cooling properties of the Talaylay latex that Saatva used in the construction of this bed.
Heavier people (weighing more than 230 lbs) may find that the ZenHaven doesn’t offer enough support. Some side and stomach sleepers who are also overweight report that they experienced too much sinkage when using this bed.
You should buy the ZenHaven mattress if you:
- Are a back sleeper
- Like products that use natural materials
- Are a hot sleeper
- Have aches and pains
Features of the ZenHaven mattress
ZenHaven is a brand owned by Saatva, one of the most popular “mattress-in-a-box” companies in the market today. Similar to competing brands like Puffy, Casper, and DreamCloud; ZenHaven mattresses are sold online and shipped directly to your house.
Saatva manufactured the ZenHaven as a flippable, all-latex mattress that provides excellent contouring and pressure-relief benefits. It has a 10-inch profile consisting of a 6-inch support core surrounded by the 1.5 inch comfort layer and a one-half inch layer of natural wool padding. The cover is constructed from organic cotton.
It’s available with two firmness options: Gentle Firm and Luxury Plush. We recommend the firm option for back sleepers and people who weigh more than average. The softer (Luxury Plush) option is ideal for stomach and side sleepers as well as people who are average weight or lower.
Let’s take an in-depth look at the features of this mattress. We’ll start by examining their different firmness options – since we believe that getting the firmness setting right is the most important aspect of buying a mattress – and then we’ll move on to the other important features of this bed.
ZenHaven is a flippable mattress, with each side having a different firmness level. One side is branded as “Plush Soft” and the other as “Gentle Firm”. We rate the Plush Soft as being a 4/10 on the firmness scale and the Gentle Firm as being 7/10.
If you’re a back sleeper, have aches and pains, are overweight, or if you tend to sleep hot; we recommend using the Gentle Firm side. Medium-firm mattresses are great because of the support that they provide to your back, hips, and shoulders. They also increase the amount of airflow that you feel (since you aren’t sinking in to the bed), which is great for keeping you cool throughout the night.
Stomach and side sleepers, people who are average-weight or lower, and people who don’t have problems with overheating while sleeping will most likely prefer the Plush Soft side. Medium-soft mattresses tend to give you the feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress rather than “on” it. Heavyweight sleepers may find that they sink in to the bed a little bit too much for their comfort. Hot sleepers also shouldn’t use this side since there is less airflow when you “sink in” to the bed.
Construction and durability
The ZenHaven has an organic cotton cover that is coated with an antimicrobial fabric treatment. The 1-inch layer of New Zealand wool blended with other non-toxic materials is a natural fire retardant, eliminating the need for artificial harsh chemicals. These materials are designed to make the cover hypoallergenic as well as makes it resistant to mold and dust mites.
Since this is a flippable mattress, the comfort layers are slightly different on each side. Both sides have a 1.5 inch layer of Talaylay latex. The soft side uses medium-soft latex with an indentation load inflection (ILD) of 20-24. The firm side has an ILD of 14-19 and uses a softer latex construction. The comfort layer consists of five zones with pincore hole patterns, which affects the density of the latex. The comfort layers offer firmer support under the hips and shoulders to provide pressure relief and reduce sinkage.
There is a single support core that supports both the soft and firm side. This support layer is made out of 6 inches of Talaylay latex and is designed to provide a stable base for the softer comfort layers that surround it. As with the comfort layers, the support core features different construction on each side. The soft side uses 3 inches of latex with an ILD of 30-34. The firm side also uses 3 inches of latex but with an ILD of 25-29.
These layers add up to an overall mattress height of 10 inches. This is an average height compared to other mattresses, but is slightly higher than other all-latex brands.
Does it keep you cool?
Since the ZenHaven is made out of latex, it sleeps less cool than other types of bed. Innerspring and hybrid-style mattresses have significantly more airflow than latex ones and thus keep you much cooler. If you have serious problems with overheating throughout the night you might want to pass on this brand.
Despite the fact that it’s not ideal for maintaining temperature neutrality, the design team at ZenHaven did a great job of making this bed way more temperature neutral than other latex mattresses. The Talaylay latex uses an open-cell structure which allows for a respectable amount of airflow and prevents heat retention. Since Talaylay latex is lighter and “flufflier” it sleeps cooler than the Dunlop latex that is commonly used in mattress manufacturing.
