#1. Nolah Evolution

Nolah Evolution mattress comfort test
Nolah Evolution 15

Pros

  • Soft and luxurious
  • Cooling
  • Pressure relieving
  • Suitable for all sleeper types

Cons

  • Edge support can be a little better
  • Can be a bit pricey for some

Why it’s the best

Based on my tests, this mattress did the best when it comes to back pain.

I especially recommend the firm version for this.

I normally wake up with a sore and achy back, but with the Nolah Evolution I woke up feeling….nothing. Which is how you want to feel when you wake up in the morning.

The Nolah Evolution also did really well in my cooling tests. I didn’t overheat or sweat once throughout the testing process.

Nolah Evolution Performance

You get to choose between three different firmness options with the Nolah Evolution: soft, medium and firm.

The soft version is best if you sleep on your side while the medium version is good for all sleeper types including combination sleepers. The firm version is best for back and stomach sleepers.

Since the Nolah Evolution is a hybrid mattress, it’s really good for overweight people (since the coils provide extra support).

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

This is our top-rated most comfortable mattress for a reason. It did very well in our comfort and pressure relief sleep tests in the Sleepline Testing Studio.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

This mattress is a great choice if you’re a hot sleeper. I didn’t sweat or overheat once when testing it out.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Though not the best I’ve tried, it’s certainly not the worst when it comes to motion isolation. You might feel some movement if you share a bed with a partner who is significantly heavier than you are and you’re a light sleeper but other than that, it works just fine.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 7 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

I felt a little bit of sinkage when sitting on the edge of the bed. Not so much that you’ll roll off the bed, but if you’re on the heavier side, I would err on the side of caution.

#2. Bear Elite Hybrid

Bear Elite Hybrid comfort test
Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

Pros

  • Sleeps cool
  • Relieves pain from pressure points
  • Excellent edge support
  • Option to choose between three different firmness levels

Cons

  • Might be too tall of a mattress for those with limited mobility
  • Slight off-gassing

Why it’s one of the best

I really like the fact that Bear Elite Hybrid mattress contains Celliant which has been proven to help with muscle recovery also helping with overall temperature regulation.

It may or may not be a gimmick, but the mattress did do extremely well in my cooling tests here in the Sleepline Testing Studio.

I also like that the Bear Elite Hybrid has very good edge support (meaning you won’t roll off the edge of the bed).

All-in-all this is a very comfortable mattress that I have no problem with recommending to the vast majority of people.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 14 inches
Firmness levels Soft, Medium, Firm

Bear Elite Hybrid Performance

The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three different firmness options: soft, medium and firm.

The soft version (which is around a 3 on the mattress firmness scale) is best for side sleepers. The medium version (a 5-6 on the scale) is good for all sleeper types including combination sleepers. The firm version (which is around a 7-8 on the scale) is best for those who sleep on their backs or stomachs.

We rate the Bear Elite Hybrid a 9.8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The mattress provides more than enough pressure point relief. You’ll never be in any sort of discomfort no matter what position you sleep in.

We rate the Bear Elite Hybrid a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

When I tested it out I didn’t sweat or overheat at all throughout the night.

We rate the Bear Elite Hybrid a 9.6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The foam layers do a really good job of absorbing any motion transfer. You won’t feel any movement from your partner tossing and turning throughout the night.

We rate the Bear Elite Hybrid a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Reinforced edge coils surround the perimeter of the entire mattress. You won’t be in any danger of rolling off the edge of the bed.

#3. Happsy Organic Mattress

Happsy mattress comfort test
Happsy Organic Mattress

Pros

  • Offers responsive support
  • Fiberglass-free
  • Certified organic
  • Naturally cooling

Cons

  • Poor edge support
  • Slight motion transfer

15% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE15

Why it’s one of the best

Most organic mattress brands cost an arm and a leg… but the Happsy is an exception.

They manage to keep costs down by sourcing components and making everything in-house.

Aside from its low cost, I like that the Happsy Organic Mattress is naturally cooling and hypoallergenic (although if you have latex allergies you should pass on this one for obvious reasons).

It’s also fiberglass-free which means it’s very safe to sleep on (for both kids and adults).

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 10 inches
Firmness levels Medium Soft, Medium Firm
Materials Organic cotton cover, wool batting, organic latex foam, individually pocketed coils, organic cotton filling

Warranty length 20 years

Certification GOLS, GOTS

Happsy Organic Mattress Performance

The Happsy Organic mattress comes in two different firmness options: medium-soft and medium-firm.

Choose the medium-soft version if you sleep on your side and choose the medium-firm version if you sleep on your back or stomach.

We rate the Happsy Organic mattress an 8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Based on my tests, this mattress provides ample pressure relief in the parts of your body that need it most (shoulders, hips, etc.). It’s a very comfortable mattress.

We rate the Happsy Organic mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The latex and coil unit combine to make a very cooling mattress. I didn’t overheat at all during my sleep test on this mattress.

We rate the Happsy Organic mattress a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The motion isolation isn’t the best, but it isn’t bad either. You’ll feel some cross-mattress movement if you share a bed with a partner but it won’t be unbearable.

We rate the Happsy Organic mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress doesn’t contain reinforced edge coils so it should come as no surprise that the edge support on it is pretty much non-existent. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

  • Good motion isolation
  • Best for back and stomach sleepers
  • Cooling

Cons

  • Poor edge support
  • Not suitable for side sleepers

Why it’s one of the best

It’s rare to find a budget-friendly mattress that’s actually comfortable.

Most of them become saggy and lumpy shockingly fast.

The Egohome Tenzura is the exception.

Made from a blend of proprietary foam layers including a copper gel-infused memory foam alternative, the Tenzura also contains a coil unit that helps provide support for the parts of your body that need it (shoulders, hips, etc.)

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 12 inches, 14 inches
Firmness levels Medium Firm

Egohome Tenzura Performance

The Egohome website states that the Tenzura is a medium-plush but upon trying it out, I can most definitely say that it feels more like a medium-firm (skewing towards the firmer side of the spectrum) which makes it really only good for back and stomach sleepers.

Side sleepers should look elsewhere.

We rate the Egohome Tenzura an 8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

There’s no doubt about it: this is a comfortable mattress. It passed all my comfort tests with flying colors. Those who suffer from chronic back pain in particular will benefit from the firmness.

We rate the Egohome Tenzura a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The copper gel foam and the pocketed coil unit makes for a very cool and comfortable sleeping experience. I slept cool throughout the night during my hands-on sleep trial.

We rate the Egohome Tenzura an 8 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

I felt very minimal motion transfer when I tried mattress out with a partner. I highly recommend it for couples.

We rate the Egohome Tenzura a 5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress doesn’t contain either reinforced edge coils or edge rails. You will find yourself rolling off the bed if you try to sleep close to the edge.

#5. Helix Dusk

Helix Dusk mattress comfort testing process
Helix Dusk

Pros

  • Supportive and pressure relieving
  • Suitable for back and stomach sleepers
  • Cooling
  • Fiberglass-free

Cons

  • Not suitable for petite side sleepers
  • Motion isolation is not the best

20% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE20

Why it’s one of the best

The coil unit and the firmness level are honestly perfect for both back and stomach sleepers.

I really like how the memory foam conformed to my body when I tested it out: it didn’t sink-in too much nor did it feels so firm that I felt like I was sleeping on a board. It was just perfect.

The one downside it motion isolation.

Because of that I can really only recommend this for single sleepers.

If you’re looking for a mattress for couples, take a look at other brands on this list.

And if you have the budget for it, Helix also makes higher-end Luxe and Elite versions of this mattress that use higher-quality materials and have better construction quality.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 11.5 inches
Firmness levels Medium Firm
Materials Knit cotton cover/GlacioTex, gel memory foam, Helix Dynamic foam, Helix Responsive foam, individually wrapped coils, DuraDense high density foam
Free trial period 100 nights

Certification CertiPUR-US

Helix Dusk Performance

The Helix Dusk sits on a 6 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm feel.

I, however, find it to be more on the firmer side hence why I only recommend it for back and stomach sleepers.

We rate the Helix Dusk an 8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The Helix Dusk did a great job at relieving pressure from my hips and shoulders. It has more of a ‘cradling’ feel to it, which is really good for pain relief.

We rate the Helix Dusk mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

I never slept hot when I was testing it out. This is likely because of the open-cell construction that helps dissipate heat.

We rate the Helix Dusk mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

This is where it falls short – it simply doesn’t do a good job of absorbing cross-mattress movement. I don’t recommend this one for couples.

We rate the Helix Dusk mattress an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The Helix Dusk contains reinforced edges giving it extra support. You won’t fall off the bed, even if you sleep close to the edge.

Alternate pick: Helix Midnight

Helix Midnight Mattress

If you want something softer, check out the Helix Midnight.

Even though it still calls itself medium-firm, it has a softer feel than the Dusk and so it’s really good for side sleepers (who tend to need extra cushioning).

It also comes in a mid-range Luxe and a high-end Elite configuration (obviously with a higher price tag than the base line model).

#6. Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid

Testing the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid for comfort
Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid Mattress

Pros

  • Fully organic
  • Great for couples
  • Offers responsive support
  • Fiberglass-free

Cons

  • Medium version may be too firm for petite side sleepers
  • Not as compressing as memory foam

Free mattress protector coupon: Sleepline

Why it’s one of the best

Most latex mattresses don’t perform well when it comes to motion isolation due to latex’s inherent springy nature… but the SweetZzz Honey Hybrid does.

This is a great mattress for couples.

The pressure relief is really good as well.

Of course, latex is one of those things that you either love or hate. If you hate it, then you should pass on this brand. But if you like the feel of latex, this is a brand that should be on your short list.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 9 inches, 10 inches, 13 inches
Firmness levels Medium Soft, Medium Firm, Firm
Materials Organic cotton quilted cover, New Zealand Calmera wool, organic Dunlop latex foam, micro-coils, individually wrapped tempered steel spring coils, organic cotton and wool blend base layer

Certification GOLS, GOTS

Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid Performance

The Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid comes in three different firmness levels: medium-soft, medium-firm and firm.

The medium-soft is best for side sleepers. The medium-firm version is an ‘all-rounder’ that’s good for all sleeper types. The firm version is best for back and stomach sleepers.

It’s also really good for overweight people. Latex is generally firmer than memory foam, and since it’s a hybrid it also contains a coil support core. This mattress will essentially never sag.

We rate the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Honestly, this rating would have been higher had it done a bit better in our compression tests. If that’s something you care about you should choose a memory foam mattress instead though. This is a really comfortable mattress (provided you like latex).

We rate the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Latex is naturally cooling (which is why it’s such a popular choice for hot sleepers). Needless to say, this mattress did very well in my cooling tests.

We rate the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The one downside of latex is that it’s very bouncy. That generally translates to poor motion isolation. This mattress is the exception. It’s easily one of the best latex mattresses I’ve seen when it comes to isolating motion. This is a good choice for couples.

We rate the Sweet Zzz Honey Hybrid a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

It did very well in my edge support tests. There was little-to-no sagging when I sat or laid down on the edge of the bed.

#7. Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex

Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex mattress test
Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex

Pros

  • Great for couples
  • Provides extra support for back and hips
  • Suitable for heavier-set back and combination sleepers
  • Pressure-relieving

Cons

  • Not suitable for heavier-set side sleepers
  • Sleeps hot

25% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE25

Why it’s one of the best

I consider the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex to be an ‘all-rounder’: the performance is consistent across the board.

Edge support is a standout feature. When I tried it out I didn’t notice any sagging or compression around the perimeter (meaning you can sleep close to the edge without worrying about falling off).

The mattress is (as the name implies) infused with copper. This reduces the amounts of germs and other nastiness that the mattress retains.

The CopperFlex is also extremely affordable. It’s hard to find a mattress under $1k that’s worth buying. This is one of them.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 14 inches
Firmness levels Medium Firm
Materials GlacioTex cover, quilted comfort foam, copper-infused memory foam, Supreme Response foam, transition foam, pocketed coils, high density foam

Certification CertiPUR-US

Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Performance

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex sits on a 7 on the mattress firmness scale, giving it a medium-firm-to-firm feel.

This firmness level is best for stomach sleepers and back sleepers. Some combination sleepers, especially those who weigh more than average, will find the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex to be comfortable as well.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The best way I can describe this mattress is that it ‘cradles’ your body without sinking in too much.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex a 6 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The mattress retains a lot of heat and did not do well in my cooling tests. I can’t recommend this model for hot sleepers.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex an 8 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried it out with a partner.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Edge support is a standout feature of this mattress. The reinforced edge coils are doing their job and doing it well. It passed my edge support test with flying colors.

#8. Puffy Royal

Puffy Royal hands-on comfort test in the Sleepline Studio
Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress

Pros

  • Plush and luxurious
  • Good for all sleeper types
  • Cooling
  • Pressure-relieving

Cons

Why it’s one of the best

Many of the other mattresses on my list skew more towards the firm side of the spectrum.

The Puffy Royal is my recommendation if you want a softer, plusher mattress that’s actually comfortable.

Imagine laying on the fluffiest memory foam mattress. Now dial that up to a 10 – that’s what sleeping on the Puffy Royal feels like.

On the downside, the Puffy Royal’s plushness negatively affects its edge support (quite a bit to be honest).

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 14 inches
Firmness levels Medium
Materials Cool Touch quilted cover, blended wool filling, Climate Fiber layer, cooling gel-infused foam, Reflexive memory foam, Cloud Comfort relief foam, Cloud sculpting technology foam, foam-encased coils, Firm Core support foam
Free trial period 101 nights
Warranty length Lifetime
Shipping Free
Certification CertiPUR-US

Puffy Royal Performance

The Puffy Royal sits squarely on a 5 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium feel.

This firmness level is good for all sleeper types.

Bear in mind though that the mattress is pretty soft and this could affect the spinal alignment of heavier-set stomach sleepers.

We rate the Puffy Royal a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The mattress passed my comfort tests with flying colors. If you’re looking for a plusher feel, this is a brand you should strongly consider.

We rate the Puffy Royal an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The mattress sleeps cool. It passed my cooling tests and I personally didn’t overheat at all during the sleep trial portion of the testing process.

We rate the Puffy Royal a 9 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Puffy Royal a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

All the plushness unfortunately works against the Puffy Royal when it comes to edge support. You may find yourself rolling off the bed if you try to lay on or close to the edge.

#9. The WinkBed

Winkbed stomach sleeper comfort test
The WinkBed

Pros

  • Good for all sleeper types
  • Supports back and joints
  • Hotel quality
  • Pressure-relieving

Cons

  • Slight off-gassing
  • Can be too pricey for some

Why it’s one of the best

The WinkBed earned a spot on this list because it’s both plush and pressure-relieving (a rare combo).

I also really like the fact that they have a firmness option that’s made specifically for overweight sleepers. Most brands sag when subjected to too much weight, but the WinkBed simply doesn’t.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 13.5 inches
Firmness levels Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm, Plus
Materials Tencel cover, plus pillow top, gel-infused foam, pocketed coils
Free trial period 120 nights
Warranty length Lifetime

Certification CertiPUR-US

The WinkBed Performance

You get to choose between four different firmness levels with the OG WinkBed mattress: soft, luxury firm, firm and plus.

The soft version is best for side sleepers. The luxury firm version is good for all sleeper types. Choose the firm version if you sleep on your back or stomach. The plus version is made specifically for overweight people.

We rate the WinkBed an 8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The mattress did well in all my comfort tests, regardless of sleeping position. It’s a very comfortable mattress.

We rate the WinkBed a 7 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Though not the best, the cooling capabilities are still above average. My cooling tests did unfortunately reveal a little bit of heat retention. It shouldn’t be noticeable though unless you have issues with sleeping hot.

We rate the WinkBed a 7 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Once again not the best I’ve tried but also not the worst. For its very few layers, the WinkBed mattress still does a pretty OK job at deadening cross-mattress movement.

We rate the WinkBed an 8 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress contains reinforced edge coils giving it strong edge support. This allows you to use more of the mattress surface while also keeping you snug within the confines of the bed.

Alternate pick: WinkBeds GravityLux

WinkBeds GravityLux in the Sleepline Testing Studio

It scored very well in my comfort tests, and I’m more than happy to recommend it as an alternate pick.

#10. Durable Mattress

Testing out the Durable branded mattress
Durable Mattress

Pros

  • Flippable
  • Offers support for hips, backs and shoulders
  • Good for couples
  • Relieves pressure

Cons

  • Retains heat
  • Poor edge support

Why it’s one of the best

Mattresses like the Durable Mattress that feature a flippable design extend the lifespan of your bed exponentially, allowing you to enjoy your mattress for longer while also saving money (and who doesn’t want to save money?).

Another thing I liked a lot about the Durable mattress is its motion-isolating properties.

For a mattress that contains a coil unit, it acts more like an all-foam mattress when it comes to absorbing motion transfer (making it a great choice for those who share a bed with a partner).

The thing is though, for a hybrid mattress that supposedly allows air to flow through it freely, the Durable Mattress retains quite a bit of heat making it a bit uncomfortable, especially for those who tend to sleep extremely hot.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 14 inches
Firmness levels Soft, Medium, Firm
Materials Cooling cover, high density quilted foam, pressure relief foam, HD transition support foam, pocketed steel coils, edge coils
Free trial period 100 nights
Warranty length Lifetime

Certification CertiPUR-US

Durable Mattress Performance

The Durable Mattress comes in three different firmness levels: soft, medium and firm.

The soft version is best for side sleepers. The medium version is good for all sleeper types. The firm version is best for those who sleep on their backs or stomachs.

Since it’s a hybrid mattress with a coil support core, it’s a good choice for overweight people.

We rate Durable Mattress an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

I ran comfort tests on both sides of this flippable mattress and it passed with flying colors on both.

We rate Durable Mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Unfortunately I can’t recommend this brand to hot sleepers. It didn’t do very well in my cooling tests.

We rate Durable Mattress a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

This mattress absorbs movement better than even some all-foam mattresses I’ve tried. I highly recommend it if you share a bed.

We rate Durable Mattress a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The edge support on it leaves much to be desired. You will roll off the edge if you try to lay close to the edge of the bed guaranteed.

How we chose these mattresses

A comfortable mattress offers a balanced mix of support and durability. We chose mattresses that excel in both.

To determine a mattress’s performance, we also considered factors such as firmness, pressure relief, responsiveness, temperature regulation, motion isolation, and edge support.

And on top of all that, we made sure to look for mattresses that are backed by safety and sustainability certifications.

Here’s a brief description of each factor we considered while making this list:

  • Comfort Comfort is pretty subjective. That’s why we look for mattresses that would be comfortable for all body types and sleeping positions.
  • Support In terms of support, we look for mattresses that can hold at least 800 lbs. without sagging prematurely. Ample support is also essential for keeping a sleeper’s spine in proper alignment.
  • Durability A durable mattress is one that can provide a consistent level of comfort and support for a minimum of 10 years (industry standard). We tested the mattresses to make sure that they could support all the way to 500 lbs. without comprising their structural integrity. The type of mattress plays a major role in its durability.
  • Firmness Each person has unique firmness preferences depending on their body type, weight and preferred sleeping position. For that reason, we look for mattresses that are medium to medium-firm which is the firmness that fits the widest variety of sleepers. We also search for mattresses that come in multiple firmness levels to give consumers multiple options to choose from.
  • Pressure relief Pressure relief refers to the ability of a mattress to redistribute your body weight to prevent pressure from building up on one spot. To test for pressure relief, we check if a mattress can contour to our bodies and evenly distribute body weight.
  • Responsiveness This refers to how quickly a mattress snaps back to its original shape after pressure is released from it. We look for mattresses that allow for ease of movement and don’t give us a stuck-in-the-mud feeling.
  • Temperature regulation A mattress with good temperature regulation should not trap body heat. We look for mattresses with designs that promote air circulation and beds that contain cooling materials such as gel, copper or graphite infusions. Breathable covers are also a big plus in this area.
  • Motion isolation A mattress with good motion isolation is one that prevents motion on one side from transferring to the other side of the bed. This is especially important for those who sleep with fidgety partners.
  • Edge support This refers to how well the perimeter of a mattress can support weight. We test this by sleeping and sitting near the edge of the bed and measuring the degree of compression on the mattress.
  • Certifications We looked for mattresses that are backed by environmental certifications. Some of the certifications that we look out for are CertiPUR-US and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for all-foam beds, and GOTS and GOLS for organic mattresses.

Conclusion

Comfort means something slightly different for everyone.

One thing we can all agree on is that a mattress should provide a consistently good sleeping experience.

The mattresses on this list have been chosen based on their overall performance in my hands-on, data-driven testing process here in the Sleepline Testing Studio.

How we rate mattresses

We rate mattresses using the following criteria:

  1. Comfort
  2. Structural integrity and durability
  3. Firmness and support
