Idle Sleep mattress review

Ever hear the expression “too much of a good thing can be bad for you”? But with mattresses, such is not the case. And with the Idle Sleep mattress, too much of a good thing is all very good indeed.

Founded in 2010 and based out of Colorado, Idle Sleep has been steadily rising up the ranks within the still fairly novel mattress in a box industry.

Offering 5 distinct mattresses with a wide range of customization options available, it’s not difficult to see why. One of the most notable things about Idle Sleep Mattresses is that 3 out of their five mattresses are two sided. Not only will you get maximum longevity out of your mattress but Idle Sleep gives you the option of choosing 2 different firmness options so that’s like getting 2 mattresses for the price of one.

Idle Sleep’s Lineup

  2. The Idle

  4. Latex Hybrid – Dunlop

The Idle Hybrid

Idle Sleep’s bestselling mattress to date, the Idle Hybrid not just brings together the best features of a memory foam mattress and an innerspring mattress. They have gone above and beyond by making their own brand of gel memory foam and utilizing 1000 quantum wrapped coils instead of the usual 300-500.

Who should buy the Idle Hybrid Mattress?

Given the option of having two firmness levels within one mattress makes the Idle Hybrid ideal for all types of sleepers. You can choose from either Medium and/or Luxury Firm.

The Luxury Firm is great for back and stomach sleepers, as well as heavier sleepers who need extra support. The Medium would be perfect for side and combo sleepers as it alleviates pressure on the shoulders and hips.

The Idle Hybrid mattress is also great for those who tend to sleep hot as it features a Thermocool cover which can help regulate body temperature.

Firmness

The Idle Hybrid mattress comes in 2 firmness options:

  • Medium
  • Luxury Firm

You can opt for having both firmness levels on either side or you can choose to have one uniform firmness level all throughout.

Construction

Since the Idle Hybrid mattress is flippable, the layers are evenly distributed between each side. The Idle Hybrid’s cover is made out of Thermocool fabric which not only helps hot sleepers sleep cool but can also help cold sleepers sleep a little bit warmer. Thermocool technology works by adapting to the needs of the sleeper – when you are hot and perspiring, the fabric can help provide evaporative cooling, keeping you cool and comfortable. When you are cold and shivering, the fabric can help reduce the exposure impact with external temperatures, keeping you warm and thermo-regulated.

The Idle Hybrid also features a 1 inch contouring foam comfort layer and 2 inches of a proprietary Cooling Buoyancy foam. Idle Sleep’s Cooling Buoyancy foam provides 4 times more pressure relief than regular gel memory foam while also providing an extra layer of cooling comfort.

A hybrid will not be a hybrid without coils and the Idle Sleep Hybrid features 1000 6″ quantum wrapped coils. Although coils provide a bouncier, more responsive effect to a bed, this may affect the mattress’ motion transfer capabilities. With the Idle Sleep Hybrid, motion transfer is kept to a minimum due to its edge to edge individually wrapped, reinforced coils.

The Idle

If you hate the springiness of coils and prefer the cradled in feel of memory foam, the The Idle is for you. Composed of layers of Idle Sleep’s own blend of gel memory foam and high density polyfoam, The Idle also features a removable, quilted cover for easy cleaning.

Who should buy The Idle Mattress?

Falling squarely in the middle between soft and firm, The Idle mattress is perfect for side and combo sleepers. Although back and stomach sleepers may find it comfortable as well – especially those who are lighter than 300 lbs – some people may need a firmer mattress for extra support if they are slightly heavier.

Couples with different sleeping styles may also love the happy medium that The Idle gives. Motion isolation is also excellent with The Idle bed.

Bear in mind though that The Idle is not two-sided and is therefore not flippable.

Firmness

Medium – The Idle gel foam mattress has a medium feel and falls between 5.5 to 6 in the soft to firm scale, with 1 being soft and 10 being firm.

While initially it is cool to the touch, the Thermocool technology (which Idle Sleep uses on all their mattresses, by the way) helps keep your cool when you sleep hot as well as keep you warm when you’re cold.
  2. Fire resistant barrier – free from carcinogenic chemicals, toxins and gasses as well as being made from 100% natural cotton, the barrier is not only safer but can lessen the effect of off-gassing
  3. Cooling Buoyancy foam – specially formulated by Idle Sleep, the Cooling Buoyancy foam comprises 3 inches of The Idle’s comfort layer and contains a gel infusion that makes it react faster than regular memory foam. It also provides more cushioning support for better pressure relief, while also helping you sleep cooler.
  4. Supportive transition foam – making up 2 inches of the entire bed, the transition foam provides another layer of supportive relief. The foam is also perforated making it easier for air to flow through.
  5. High Density foam base – coming at a 2.4 lbs core density, making it extra durable, the foam base makes up 7 inches of The Idle’s 12 inch total.

Think of the Idle Gel Plush as The Idle on steroids. All of the best features of The Idle can also be found in the Idle Gel Plush, but slightly amplified which means it’s also slightly a bit more expensive.

Who should buy The Idle Plush Mattress?

Side sleepers and combo sleepers will benefit the most from The Idle Gel Plush bed. Being of a Medium Soft feel, The Idle Gel Plush may not be offer the extra support that stomach and back sleepers need.

That said, the Idle Gel Plush does offer excellent motion isolation even though it is a fairly soft bed. This makes it a wonderful bed for those who sleep with a partner.

The Idle Gel Plush’s medium soft construction allows side and combo sleepers to enjoy that slightly sunk in, cuddly feel while helping to relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips. Hot sleepers will also appreciate the added cooling features of the Idle Gel Plush bed.

4. Idle Latex Hybrid – Dunlop

Idle Latex Hybrid – Dunlop

Not to be outdone by companies offering eco-friendly latex alternatives to the more traditional foam mattresses, Idle Sleep has created not one but two latex mattresses. Here we shall be taking a closer look at their Dunlop Latex Hybrid.

Who should buy the Idle Latex Hybrid Dunlop?

The Idle Latex Hybrid Dunlop mattress has two firmness options, a Medium and a Luxury Firm. This makes it the perfect mattress for combination sleepers and those who sleep strictly on their backs and/or stomachs. Strict side sleepers may find that a firmer mattress may be a little too hard on their pressure points so they might want to look at Idle Sleep’s softer offerings.

Couples with different sleeping styles would also appreciate the different firmness options that the Idle Latex Hybrid offers. Motion isolation is excellent. No more worry of waking up to a partner who tosses and turns throughout the night.

Those of us who are extra particular about buying environmentally friendly and organic, all natural products will also love the Idle Latex Hybrid Dunlop.

What’s more, since this mattress is flippable, you can have the option to choose to have both firmness levels in one bed.

Firmness

The Idle Latex Hybrid Dunlop has two firmness levels:

  • Medium – Best for combination sleepers (those who shift between stomach, back and side sleeping)
  • Luxury Firm – Best for back and stomach sleepers

Construction

Consisting of a combination of latex, quantum coils, gel foam and organic cotton, the Latex Hybrid Dunlop packs a veritable punch.

  1. Cover and yarn rosettes – all natural, organic cotton is wrapped all around the Idle Latex Hybrid. This fabric is eco-friendly and allows for maximum air flow. Double button tufting hold the layers of the mattress together rather than glue for a more natural build and durability.
  2. Natural wool layer – 1 inch natural wool layer acts as a natural fire retardant and gives added softness and comfort.
  3. Dunlop Latex – 3 inches of all natural Dunlop Latex. It features open cell breathability, and is naturally hypoallergenic and anti-microbial. Being naturally dense, Dunlop latex gives great support but may not be as pressure relieving.
  4. Coil support layer – provides the correct tension management and helps with motion transfer.
  5. 6″ Quantum Edge to Edge wrapped coils – 1000 individually wrapped coils provide even support throughout the mattress and being individually wrapped making it great at isolating motion transfer.

All of Idle Sleep’s flippable mattresses include carry handles on the sides for easier handling. Being two sided, the Latex Hybrid Dunlop has even layers all throughout.
