Our experience with the Helix Dusk Elite

For a mattress at this price point, I would not be happy if the Helix Dusk Elite if it wasn’t perfect in every way.

But thankfully, it did very well in all my hands-on tests.

I have to say I was very impressed with its overall performance.

Right out of the gate, the mattress definitely looks the part. Large and certainly imposing, the Helix Dusk Elite commands attention and looks and feels very luxurious.

I can’t even say that there’s one standout feature I liked the most about the Helix Dusk Elite because everything (and I do mean everything) just works so well – from pressure relief to cooling to motion isolation and edge support, there really isn’t a lot to find fault with.

Well… except for its $3000+ price point.

Firmness

The Helix Dusk Elite is around a 5.5 to 6 on the mattress firmness scale which gives it a medium feel.

When testing it out I found that it skews slightly firmer than what the company claims. Not by much, but it is noticeable.

Helix markets this mattress towards back and stomach sleepers.

My testing shows that it provides the best support and pressure relief for back sleepers (of any weight); heavier-set stomach sleepers may find it to be a bit too soft to be able to get proper spinal alignment.

Lightweight side sleepers on the other hand may find the mattress to be a bit too firm, so manage your expectations.

Cooling Test

We rate the Helix Dusk Elite an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

While the mattress contains a huge (and I mean HUGE) chunk of memory foam on top of transition foam and high density foam layers (which usually results in heat retention), the mattress surprisingly did very well in my cooling tests.

I have no problem with recommending this one to hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Helix Dusk Elite a 9 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Motion test on Helix Dusk Elite
Motion isolation is a standout feature of the Helix Dusk Elite.

For a hybrid mattress, the Helix Dusk Elite performs more like an all-foam mattress when it comes to motion isolation.

I did not feel any motion transfer whatsoever when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

Edge Support Test

We rate the Helix Dusk Elite an 8 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Reinforced edge coils surround the perimeter of the mattress, giving it solid edge support.

Side edge of the Helix Dusk Elite
The edge support is really good as well.

Whether sitting or lying close to the edge, I did not feel like I was in any danger of rolling off at any time.

For couples, having excellent edge support also means that you can utilize more, if not all, of the mattress surface without experiencing sagging or compressing.

Pressure Relief Test

We rate the Helix Dusk Elite an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

This is where the mattress really shines and in my honest opinion, truly shows that it’s worth the price tag.

Internal layers of the Helix Dusk Elite mattress
I was really impressed with the pressure relief I experienced with the Helix Dusk Elite.

I found that the mattress gave more of a cradling feel, almost like you’re sleeping ‘in’ the mattress rather than ‘on’ top of it.

This is because it has multiple layers of foam for the comfort layers. These layers allow heavier parts of your body to sink in a bit (hips, shoulders) while also ‘pushing back’ on the lighter areas.

And since it has two layers of coils (including a responsive micro-coil layer), it still feels supportive. So you don’t sink in too much to the point where it feels like you’re being swallowed by the mattress.

Overall I have to say that this is one of the most comfortable mattresses I’ve tried.

Construction

There are nine layers to the Helix Dusk Elite.

These layers come enclosed in a heat-wicking quilted mattress cover.

Helix Dusk Elite mattress sleep test
The Helix Dusk Elite is made out of nine different layers. That’s a lot of layers.

The first layer is made up of a CoolForce layer that helps stave off any heat retention.

Below lies the first comfort layer which is made from a proprietary gel memory foam which helps provide pressure relief and compression.

Next comes a thicker and denser proprietary memory foam layer to reduce sinking and sagging.

A layer of Helix’s responsive foam acts as a transition layer before the micro-coils unit.

Individually wrapped micro-coils make up the first coil unit for extra support.

A layer of Helix responsive foam makes up another transition layer on top of the main coil unit.

An ErgoAlign contour foam layer helps provide targeted support as well as extra firmness.

The main coil unit is made up of 8-inch pocketed steel coils that provide the main support of the mattress.

The base layer is made up of high density foam that helps hold the other layers together and provide structure to the mattress.

Durability

I have tested a good number of Helix mattresses and I can safely say that none of them have disappointed me yet when it comes to durability and longevity.

I was impressed by the quality of the materials and construction in the Helix Dusk Elite. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect to get at least 10 years out of it.

Similar Mattresses to Consider

If the price tag is too much to stomach, you can always downgrade to the Helix Dusk Luxe or the Helix Dusk Core. They’re part of the same mattress line so they have similar construction, but they aren’t quite as good.

If you’re extremely overweight I recommend the Helix Plus or Helix Plus Luxe since they’re made with sturdier and more durable materials.

Otherwise, I recommend these alternatives.

Helix Midnight Elite

Helix Midnight Elite

The Helix Midnight Elite is my recommendation if you want something softer.

The Midnight Elite is another model in Helix’s high-end tier. It’s made with high quality materials and has the same price tag as the Dusk Elite, but it has a medium-soft firmness level which is better for side sleepers.

You can also downgrade to the Midnight Luxe or Midnight Core models, depending on your budget.

Nolah Evolution

Nolah Evolution in the Sleepline Testing Studio
Nolah Evolution 15

I highly recommend the Nolah Evolution f you want something a little less expensive that’s also really good for back pain.

It comes in the same 15-inch thickness level as the Midnight Elite. If you choose the medium firmness level, it’s so similar that it almost acts as the poor man’s version of the Midnight Elite.

Saatva Classic

Saatva Classic in the Sleepline Testing Studio
Saatva Classic

Take a look at the Saatva Classic if you want a mattress that has more of a plush feel to it.

It’s a hybrid foam mattress just like the Midnight Elite. The added touch of softness makes it better for side sleepers though.

I also like that this mattress ships full size (not compressed inside a box) and that it comes with free white glove delivery (in-home setup and old mattress removal).

You can also buy it from Helix’s in-person showrooms.

Conclusion

The Helix Midnight Elite is a good mattress.

A really good mattress.

The vast majority of people will find it to be very comfortable. The only type of sleeper I hesitate to recommend it to are lightweight side sleepers and heavyweight stomach sleepers.

Of course, the price tag is the elephant in the room. This is a premium mattress and is priced as such. It’s definitely worth it if you can comfortable afford it. But if you’re on a budget, I recommend looking at cheaper alternatives.
