CouchBed in mattress mode

The CouchBed is an all-in-one mattress and sofa combo. Unlike a futon, there are no metal or wooden parts to worry about. If you’re living in a tiny apartment then you know that space is at a premium. Why not take advantage of the opportunity to combine two pieces of furniture into one?

Our favorite thing about the CouchBed is that it’s designed to save space. Our least favorite aspect of buying the CouchBed is that it only comes with a 30-day trial as compared to the industry standard 100 nights.

In this review of the CouchBed, we’ll be looking at both the positives and negatives. Before you make your purchasing decision, read this review and find out whether it’s worth buying or if you should pass on this unique piece of furniture.

What type of person is the CouchBed designed for?

After trying out the CouchBed and receiving additional feedback from real customers, we’ve determined that the CouchBed is best for people who have limited space (small studio apartment, dorm room) and/or a limited budget and need to combine two pieces of furniture into one.

We rate the CouchBed as a firm mattress. Firm mattresses are best for back sleepers and people who have sore backs and need additional spinal support. If you’re a side or stomach sleeper you may find that this mattress is a little bit too firm and doesn’t completely conform to your body shape. But if you’re a side or stomach sleeper and you already know that you prefer a firmer feel, then this is definitely a great option.

You should buy the CouchBed Mattress if you:

  • Live in a small apartment or dorm room
  • Have limited space and want to combine two pieces of furniture into one
  • Need a versatile piece of furniture for your guest room
  • Are on a budget
  • Are a back sleeper
  • Are a side or stomach sleeper who prefers a firm mattress

Features of the CouchBed Mattress

The main – obvious – standout feature of the CouchBed is that it is a two-in-one piece of furniture. You can set it up as a couch during the day or when company comes over and then simply fold it up into the bed configuration when it’s time to get some shut-eye.

The CouchBed is definitely occupying a niche in the mattress market. It’s designed for people who would normally buy a futon or regular sofa bed but want something a little bit better. More comfortable. More aesthetically pleasing. Longer lasting.

So does the CouchBed live up to its price point and lofty explanations? Or would you be better off saving your cash and buying a cheap metal folding futon? In this section we’ll give you a detailed look at the key features of this mattress so you can make your own decision.

Firmness

Compared to other mattresses that we’ve reviewed in the past, the CouchBed is definitely on the firmer side. This makes sense since it performs double duty as a sofa. On the firmness scale we rate the CouchBed as a firm mattress.

Firm mattresses are great for people who sleep on their back and need support. Whether that’s because you have a bad back or because you simply prefer the feel of a firm mattress, this is a great choice.

If you’re a side sleeper you may want to pass on this one unless you know for a fact that you enjoy firm mattresses. It doesn’t sink in and conform to your body shape the way that a softer gel mattress would.

Stomach sleepers generally prefer medium-firm mattresses. This one is a little bit firmer than that, but it may be perfect for you or you might hate it. It’s really a matter of personal preference.

Durability

The CouchBed is definitely marketing itself as the premium version of an old-school metal framed futon. But does it really last longer than a futon?

After extensive testing we realized that the CouchBed is an extremely durable mattress.

This mattress is constructed out of multiple layers, each designed to provide extra support. Since it’s a firm mattress you won’t see it permanently sink in on the area where you sleep, unlike cheaper mattresses or futons.

One aspect that we really wanted to test out is the durability of the fabric cover. Since this mattress doubles as a sofa, you’ll be folding and unfolding it potentially on a daily basis. We’re happy to report that we didn’t notice any damage to the fabric through extensive normal use. The fabric didn’t fray or tear at any point, even though we were switching it back and forth from mattress to couch configuration.

Construction

The CouchBed is a 10″ memory foam mattress that features multi-layer memory foam construction.

The memory foam is densely packed, which is designed to give added support and gives the mattress a firm feel, which as we previously mentioned is phenomenal for back sleepers.

One cool thing that we loved about the CouchBed is that the construction is designed to provide a cooling effect. The 100% CertiPur memory foam is made with phase-change material which the company claims will actively cool the mattress. When we were running this mattress through our trial period, we noticed that this seemed extremely accurate. None of our testers had any issues with feeling too hot during the night.

The mattress has a hinged cover to make it extremely easy to switch from couch to mattress mode. It took us only a couple of seconds to switch back and fort between sofa and bed. Since the convertibility of this mattress is the main selling point, we’re definitely glad to see that they made this as easy as humanly possible.

Temperature control

As previously mentioned, this mattress is constructed out of 100% CertiPur multi-layer memory foam with “ultra-dense” packing.

I found that this mattress did a great job of keeping me cool throughout the night. The other testers who tried out the CouchBed reported similar findings. If you have an issue with overheating during the night and waking up covered in sweat, this mattress may provide relief.

What sizes are available?

The CouchBed is available in the following standard North American sizes:

  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen

This mattress is 10″ tall, so your standard-sized sheets should fit perfectly. There is no need to go out and buy a new blanket or set of sheets, the ones you already have will work fine.

Pricing

The CouchBed is available at extremely affordable prices, especially when compared to luxury mattresses like the DreamCloud or Puffy. This product is positioned as a premium version of those cheap metal folding futons, but the price is only slightly higher. If you’re really struggling financially, you might want to save your money and get that futon. But if you want something slightly more expensive but much more affordable, the CouchBed is a great choice.

Here are the current prices for the CouchBed:

  • Twin – $349.99
  • Full – $449.99
  • Queen – $499.99
