Testing out the best 12-inch mattress brands

12 inches is the sweet spot for mattress height. It’s not so short that it doesn’t feel supportive and not so tall that you’ll have a hard time getting in and out of bed. I spent a lot of time trying out all of the popular brands, and these are the ones I approve of. The overall best 12-inch mattress is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid.

Why it’s the best

The thing that makes the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid the best among all the 12-inch mattresses we’ve tried is that it performs consistently well across the board. Which is great because, when it comes to mattresses (as with most things in life really), consistency is key.

From its comfort and pressure relief to edge support and motion isolation, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid has it all making it our top pick for the best 12-inch mattress.

It comes in three different firmness options which means there’s a firmness level for every sleeping position.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

As I’ve mentioned, you get to choose between three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.

The soft version is best for those who sleep only on their sides as it keeps the pressure off their main pressure points. The medium version is good for all sleeper types including combination sleepers. The firm version is best for those who sleep strictly on their backs and stomachs.

Since it features a hybrid construction, it’s great for heavier-set sleepers.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid  a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The mattress provides more than enough pressure point relief and joint support, no matter your preferred sleeping position.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid a 7 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

It performed well at keeping heat retention at bay making it a good choice for those who tend to sleep hot. This is largely in part to its blend of proprietary foam layers that feel like memory foam (but without the heat-trapping effect).

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid a 9 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The foam layers absorb movement brilliantly. I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner making it an excellent choice for couples.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid an 8 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress contains reinforced edge coils giving it extra edge support. If you’re the type of sleeper who likes to sleep close to the edge of the bed, you won’t be in any danger of falling off. Aside from that, a mattress that has great edge support also allows you to sleep on more of the mattress surface.

#2. Egohome Black

12-inch tall Egohome Black mattress

  • Budget-friendly
  • Good for those who suffer from chronic pain

Cons

  • Poor edge support
  • Not suitable for heavier-set stomach sleepers

Why it’s one of the best

For a mattress that’s pretty affordable, the Egohome Black offers the same deep compression as a classic memory foam mattress but without that dreaded ‘stuck in the mud’ feel.

Featuring an all-foam construction, the Egohome Black – like most all-foam mattresses worth their salt – has exceptional motion isolation, making it a good choice for those who share a bed.

The downside to a mattress that’s only made of foam layers though (plus a budget-friendly one at that) is its lack of edge support. This mattress is no exception. The edge support is downright terrible.

Egohome Black Performance

You get to choose between two different firmness levels – medium-soft and medium-firm.

The medium-soft version is best for side sleepers and combination sleepers while the medium-firm version is good for all sleeper types including back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

Since the mattress has an all-foam construction, it is not suitable for heavier-set sleepers.

We rate the Egohome Black an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Its all-foam construction gives you just enough support.

We rate the Egohome Black a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

It retained a significant amount of heat which means it’s not the mattress for you if you’re a hot sleeper.

We rate the Egohome Black a 10 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

I did not feel any movement whatsoever when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Egohome Black a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

There are no reinforced edges, which means the edge support is almost non-existent. You will find yourself rolling off the edge of the bed.

If you need a mattress that features a hybrid construction, check out the Egohome Tenzura.

Coming in at a medium-firm, the Tenzura is good for all sleeper types. I think this is a good alternative for heavier-set sleepers, since it’s much more supportive than the Black.

#3. Glacier Original Hybrid

Glacier Original Hybrid height test
Glacier Original Hybrid

Pros

  • Helps with proper spinal alignment
  • Cooling
  • Offers support for back and joints
  • Great for back and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Not suitable for side sleepers
  • Slight motion transfer

Why it’s one of the best

When you hear the word glacier, there’s only one thing that comes to mind: cold.

I’m happy to report that the Glacier Original Hybrid does live up to its name.

Made with different types of actively-cooling materials including graphite-infused memory foam, cooling gel-infused foam, and a proprietary cooling cover, the Glacier Original Hybrid is your best bet if you are a hot sleeper looking for a 12-inch mattress.

The Original Hybrid has a medium-firm feel that actually leans more towards the firm side of the spectrum in my honest opinion.

So it’s best for those who sleep on their backs or stomachs which means, if you’re a side sleeper, it will be a bit too firm for you.

Specs at a glance

Glacier Original Hybrid Performance

The Glacier Original Hybrid sits on a 7.5 on the mattress firmness scale which gives it a medium-firm to firm feel.

This firmness level is best for back and stomach sleepers but definitely not good if you sleep on your side.

We rate the Glacier Original Hybrid a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Had the mattress been a bit softer and been able to accommodate side sleepers, I would have given it a higher rating.

We rate the Glacier Original Hybrid an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

This mattress sleeps cool. If you’re a hot sleeper, this is a great choice for you.

We rate the Glacier Original Hybrid a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Even with multiple foam comfort layers, the mattress falls short when it comes to motion isolation. I do not recommend if if you share a bed.

We rate the Glacier Original Hybrid a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

It’s not the best I’ve tried but the edge support is good enough.

#4. SweetNight CoolNest

SweetNight CoolNest 12-inch mattress height test
SweetNight CoolNest Mattress

Pros

  • Cooling
  • Good for back and stomach sleepers
  • Great motion isolation
  • Budget-friendly

Cons

  • Poor edge support
  • Not good for side sleepers

5% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE

Why it’s one of the best

The SweetNight CoolNest is a rare example of an all-foam mattress that we rate highly when it comes to cooling (we all know how notorious all-foam mattresses can be when it comes to heat retention).

Another thing that’s of note is its motion isolation, which is honestly one of the best I’ve tried. The CoolNest is definitely a brand I recommend to those who share a bed with a partner.

If you’re a back or stomach sleeper of average weight, the medium-firm feel of the SweetNight CoolNest will provide you with the pressure relief you need, especially around the hip and lumbar areas.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 12 inches, 14 inches, 16 inches
Firmness levels Medium Firm
Materials 3D weaving cooling mattress cover, high resilience foam, gel-infused memory foam, proprietary memory foam, high density foam, foam support bars

Certification CertiPUR-US

SweetNight CoolNest Performance

The SweetNight CoolNest is around a 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm feel.

I did find it to be leaning more towards the firm side of the spectrum though. You will definitely feel the difference if you weigh less than average, so I only recommend this brand if you sleep on your back or stomach.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Honestly, I would have given this a higher rating if it felt a tiny but softer. The mattress does provide ample support and pressure relief due to its layers of proprietary memory foam though.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

For an all-foam mattress, I found it to be on par with hybrid mattresses when it comes to cooling. The mattress does not retain any heat, making it an excellent choice for those who sleep hot.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest a 10 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

No surprises here – I literally felt not even an ounce of motion transfer when I tried mattress with a partner.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress does not contain any reinforced edges and you can definitely see and feel it when you try to sit or lay on the edge of the bed.

#5. Origin LumbarCloud

Origin Hybrid Pro 12-inch mattress
Origin LumbarCloud Mattress

Pros

  • Good for back and stomach sleepers
  • Helps with proper spinal alignment

Cons

  • Edge support is not the best
  • Might be too firm for side sleepers

5% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE5%OFF

Why it’s one of the best

Made with both latex foam and memory foam, the Origin LumbarCloud offers much needed pressure point relief especially for those who sleep for their backs and stomachs.

The LumbarCloud is made out cooling materials from top to bottom.

Graphite, tencel, cooling gel, micro-coils, and a proprietary Hexagrid design all make it the coolest mattress on this list.

Specs at a glance

Origin LumbarCloud Performance

The Origin LumbarCloud sits on a 7.5 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm to firm feel.

While this firmness level is perfect for stomach sleepers and back sleepers, it will be too firm for side sleepers, especially if you weigh less than average.

We rate the Origin LumbarCloud an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

I was very impressed by how comfortable this mattress was. The pressure-relieving capabilities are also top-notch.

We rate the Origin LumbarCloud a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

This mattress sleeps extremely cool. If you’re a hot sleeper, this brand should be on your short list of mattresses to consider.

We rate the Origin LumbarCloud an 8 out of 10 when it comes  to motion isolation.

I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Origin LumbarCloud an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress has very good edge support.

#6. Avenco Original Hybrid Plus

Avenco Original Hybrid Plus 12-inch mattress performance testing process
Avenco Original Hybrid Plus

Pros

  • Budget-friendly
  • Great edge support
  • Pressure relieving
  • Perfect for back sleepers and stomach sleepers

Cons

  • Not good for side sleepers
  • Poor motion isolation

6% off coupon code: Sleepline

Why it’s one of the best

Coming in a true firm feel, the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus is a great choice provided you’re a back or stomach sleeper.

Another thing I liked is that it sleeps very cool (good for hot sleepers).

Unfortunately, due to its thicker coil unit, the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus does not absorb cross-mattress movement very well and I don’t recommend it if you share a bed.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 10 inches, 12 inches
Firmness levels Firm
Materials Soft knit cotton cover, comfort foam, cooling gel-infused memory foam, pressure relieving comfort foam, pocketed manganese steel springs
Free trial period 100 nights
Warranty length 10 years

Certification CertiPUR-US

Avenco Original Hybrid Plus Performance

The Avenco Original Hybrid Plus sits on a 7 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a firm feel.

This firmness level is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers but isn’t great for side sleepers.

We rate the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus a 7 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

This would have been an 8 if it was a little bit softer. With that said, it still provides more than enough comfort and pressure point relief if you’re a back or stomach sleeper (since you need a firmer mattress than stomach sleepers).

We rate the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

I found it to sleep cool thanks to its thicker coil unit, which allows for more air flow.

We rate the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

This is where the thicker coil unit brings the mattress overall performance rating down a little – I felt quite a significant amount of motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner and I do not recommend it to those who share a bed.

We rate the Avenco Original Hybrid Plus an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The reinforced edge coils give the mattress extra edge support, which in turn allows you to sleep on the entire surface.

Naturepedic EOS mattress height test
Naturepedic EOS Classic

Pros

  • Customizable

  • Cooling and hypoallergenic

Cons

15% off coupon code: SLEEPLINE15

Why it’s one of the best

Customizable and all-organic, the Naturepedic EOS Classic is a sustainably-constructed mattress that’s both cooling and supportive – perfect for those who are looking for a natural 12-inch mattress.

Made from layers of latex foam, organic wool, and organic cotton; the Naturepedic EOS Classic also contains a coil unit made from fabric-encased coils.

You can move around and swap out the latex layers, wool, and cotton batting to get the firmness level you prefer. This makes the mattress great for all sleeper types (back, side, or stomach).

Specs at a glance

Naturepedic EOS Classic Performance

You can customize the firmness levels of the Naturepedic EOS Classic by moving around its internal layers until it’s comfortable for you.

This means the mattress is suitable for all sleeper types from side sleepers and combination sleepers to back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The latex foam layers and cotton and wool batting provide a responsive yet also compressing support that helps keep weight off the main pressure points.

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Pure latex is naturally cooling and organic wool is temperature-regulating – these two, when combined with pocketed coils – make for a mattress that sleeps extremely cool.

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic a 9.7 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Even with a coil unit and bouncy latex foam, the mattress absorbs a good amount of movement. I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Naturepedic EOS Classic a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Much to my disappointment, the mattress has really poor edge support which I believe is due to its customizable nature. I guess we win some, we lose some. Manage your expectations.

How we chose these mattresses

A good mattress offers a balanced mix of comfort, support, and durability; we chose 12-inch mattresses that excel in all three.

To determine a mattress’s performance we considered factors such as firmness, pressure relief, responsiveness, temperature regulation, motion isolation, and edge support.

And on top of that, we made sure to look for mattresses that are backed by safety and sustainability certifications.

Here’s a brief description of each factor we considered while making this list:

  • Comfort Comfort is pretty subjective. That’s why we look for mattresses that are comfortable for all body types and sleeping positions.
  • Support In terms of support, we look for mattresses that can hold at least 800 lbs. without sagging prematurely. Ample support is also essential for keeping a sleeper’s spine in proper alignment.
  • Durability A durable mattress is one that can provide a consistent level of comfort and support for a minimum of 10 years (industry standard). We tested the mattresses to make sure they can support sleepers all the way to 500 lbs.without comprising their structural integrity. The type of mattress plays a major role in its durability.
  • Firmness Each person has unique firmness preferences depending on their body type, weight, and preferred sleeping position. For that reason, we look for mattresses that are medium to medium-firm which is the firmness that fits the widest variety of sleepers. We also search for mattresses that come in multiple firmness levels to give consumers multiple options to choose from.
  • Pressure relief Pressure relief refers to the ability of a mattress to redistribute your body weight to prevent pressure from building up on one spot. To test for pressure relief, we check if a mattress can contour to our bodies and evenly distribute body weight.
  • Responsiveness This refers to how quickly a mattress snaps back to its original shape after pressure is released from it. We look for mattresses that allow for ease of movement and don’t give us a stuck-in-the-mud feeling.
  • Temperature regulation A mattress with good temperature regulation should not trap body heat. We look for mattresses with designs that promote air circulation and beds that contain cooling materials such as gel, copper, or graphite infusions. Breathable covers are also a big plus in this area.
  • Motion isolation A mattress with good motion isolation is one that prevents motion on one side from transferring to the other side of the bed. This is especially important for those who sleep with fidgety partners.
  • Edge support This refers to how well the perimeter of a mattress can support weight. We test this by sleeping and sitting near the edge of the bed and measuring the degree of compression on the mattress.
  • Certifications We looked for mattresses that are backed by environmental certifications. Some of the certifications that we look out for are CertiPUR-US and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for all-foam beds, and GOTS and GOLS for organic mattresses.
  • Height – This one is obvious, but I have to include it here for the sake of completeness. All mattresses on this list had to be exactly 12 inches in height.

Conclusion

When looking for 12-inch mattresses, we use the same strict criteria that we always use when rating the mattresses we try.

That’s because no matter the thickness of a mattress, the same rules apply when it comes to comfort, pressure relief, motion isolation and cooling capabilities.

Based on our testing criteria, we think the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is the best 12-inch mattress on the market.

If you want something thinner take a look at our lists of the best 6-inch mattresses, best 8-inch mattresses, and best 10-inch mattresses.
