Amerisleep (coupon code: SLEEPLINE) is the original mattress-in-a-box company. It was founded well before Casper, Avocado, Saatva, and all of the other many competitors that have disrupted the old-school mattress industry. While other companies focus on flashy marketing campaigns and chasing money from investors, Amerisleep has been growing their business the old fashioned way: by creating a high-quality lineup of mattresses – including the AS5 Hybrid – and gradually winning over customers who become raving fans.
The Amerisleep AS5 is the softest mattress that the company sells. You can get it in one of two options: memory foam or hybrid. We’re focusing on the hybrid model in this review, but their memory foam is also a great option if you want to spend a little bit less without sacrificing quality.
Who should buy the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid mattress?
We recommend the Amerisleep AS5 for people who prefer to sleep on a soft mattress. The AS5 is Amerisleep’s softest bed, which makes it great for side sleepers and combination sleepers (people who move between different positions frequently while sleeping).
All of Amerisleep’s mattresses are made out of memory foam, with the option to upgrade to a hybrid-style mattress for an additional cost. Memory foam beds are great for you if you like more of a “body-hugging” feel. Since the AS5 is a soft mattress you’ll sink in a little bit, which gives you the feeling of sleeping “in” your mattress rather than “on” it. The hybrid version of the Amerisleep AS5 contains springs in the support core that are designed to give the bed a more supportive feel.
If you’re a hot sleeper then you’ll definitely appreciate the open-cell construction that Amerisleep uses on their beds. This unique way of manufacturing memory foam utilizes plant-based BioPur materials to keep you cool by wicking away warm air, making it much more breathable than traditional memory foam mattresses. If you’re familiar with the Comfort Classic pillow then you already know what to expect with BioPur foam.
You should buy the Amerisleep AS5 mattress if you:
- Like memory foam or hybrid-style beds
- Are a hot sleeper
- Like soft beds
- Are a side or combination sleeper
- Prefer a thicker mattress
- Appreciate great customer service
Features of the Amerisleep AS5
Amerisleep offers five different mattress models in both memory foam and hybrid versions, ranging from AS1 to AS5. The numbers represent the firmness level of a particular mattress, with AS1 being the firmest and AS5 the softest.
Since the AS5 is the softest mattress that Amerisleep offers, you can expect it to have an extremely plush and body-hugging feel. The Bio-Pur memory foam that the company uses does a great job of sinking in to support your body while bouncing back almost immediately as soon as you take the pressure off. Other brands that we’ve tried have an issue with “printing”, where your body imprint remains on the mattress even after you get out of bed. We’re happy to report that this isn’t an issue with the Amerisleep AS5, even though it’s extremely soft. It also holds up well when using an adjustable base. I’ve been using the one that Amerisleep sells and it works great with the AS5.
Amerisleep offers some of the best customer service in the industry. They always have a staff on hand to answer your questions via phone, email, or chat. They back their mattresses up with a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty against manufacturer defects. If you don’t like your mattress for any reason, contact Amerisleep within the first 100 days of delivery and you’ll get a full refund, no questions asked.
The Celliant cover that Amerisleep uses on this mattress is ultra-breathable and does a great job of promoting airflow. This cover, combined with the open-cell memory foam construction, makes the AS5 sleep much cooler than other memory foam and hybrid mattresses. If you want it to sleep even cooler, we recommend looking at getting a set of Tencel sheets as well.
The Amerisleep AS5 also contains a zoned support system. This means that there is extra material to support the heavier parts of your body while the parts of your bed that support the lighter weight parts of your body have less material so you can sink in more. We found that this patented zoned support system did a great job of relieving back, shoulder, and neck pain after just a few nights of exclusively sleeping on the AS5 Hybrid.
Let’s move on and take an in-depth look at the features of the Amerisleep AS5. We’ll start by reviewing the firmness and construction of the bed.
As someone who loves soft mattresses, let me tell you: the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid is amazing. Most brands have a hard time balancing softness and support, which is why their soft beds are usually the weakest product they offer. Amerisleep finally cracked the code. The AS5 Hybrid masters the art of giving you that perfect “body-hugging” sinking feeling that soft mattresses are known for along with the support that firmer innerspring mattresses provide.
After extensive testing we didn’t notice any sinking or sagging, which is rare for a soft mattress like the AS5. I slept on mine every single day for months and it still looks like it just came out of the package.
The AS5 is the softest mattress that Amerisleep makes. If you want something a little bit firmer, the AS4 rates at medium-firm. The AS3 is a medium, AS2 is medium-firm, and the AS1 is the firmest bed that the company offers. The beds all have equal quality, the only difference is the firmness level so you if you want something firmer than the AS5 you can buy one of their other models instead. Which mattress you decide to buy is a matter of your own personal preferences and sleeping habits.
The AS5 is a 14″ thick all-foam or foam-coil hybrid mattress that is the softest in the Amerisleep product lineup. The main difference between the AS5 and other models is that it includes an “Active Flex” layer that adds softness that cradles you when you lay down but bounces back quick when you get off the bed.
The cover is made out of a breathable blend of Celliant, polyester, and spandex. This unique blend of materials makes the cover stretchy – meaning that it won’t bunch up every time you move. It also provides a large amount of airflow, which is critical for making sure that memory foam mattresses stay cool while you sleep.
When I pressed my hand down on the cover I could actually feel the airflow coming through it so I can verify that it works. It has a very soft feel and the unique “dotted” design aesthetic makes it look and feel like a premium mattress. The AS5 isn’t cheap so it’s good to know that the looks match the high-end performance and high-end pricetag.
A comfort layer lies just underneath the cover. It’s made out of 3 inches of high-quality memory foam with a 4lb density. I found that I was able to sink into the mattress for pressure relief and that it provided a slow response to pressure, meaning that it really gave me the body-hugging feel that memory foam is famous for.
I was very surprised by how cool the Amerisleep AS5 was, and I can attribute most of that cooling effect to the open cell structure of the memory foam comfort layer. The open cell design and the Bio-Pur material did an excellent job of releasing trapped air, which helps to wick away heat and keeps you cool while you sleep.
The Active Flex layer consists of 2 inches of foam directly underneath the comfort layer. This soft foam has a similar consistency as the memory foam above it. The point of this layer is that it allows you to sink in even deeper into your mattress without losing support. The Active Flex layer only exists in the AS5 and serves to differentiate it from the medium-soft AS4 mattress.
Like the comfort layer above it, the Active Flex material has a slow response to pressure and bounces back quick. I didn’t notice any imprinting or sagging in the mattress, even after sleeping on it daily for an extended period of time. I attribute that to the Active Flex layer, which made this mattress feel as soft as it does without losing any support.
Now we get down into the guts of the mattress with the transition layer. This layer is made out of 2 inches of high-density convoluted polyfoam that is designed to create space for additional airflow for temperature regulation. The transition layer has a quick response to pressure and is a little bit firmer than the soft layers above it. Like the name implies, it acts as a transition between the base layer and Active Flex and comfort layers above.
The transition layer adds to the comfort of the mattress but is really designed to provide structure. It’s what prevents the soft comfort layers from sagging down into the firmer base layer of the bed. One cool thing about the transition layer is that it has a targeted zoned pressure relief construction. This improves your alignment by reducing pressure points that can cause pain and by adding support to the areas where you need it most.
Finally we arrive at the base layer. The base consists of 7 inches of high-density polyfoam with a 1.8lb density rating. This part of the bed has the relatively unglamorous job of supporting the transition and comfort layers above it. This is the layer that gives the Amerisleep AS5 its shape and is what makes the mattress so durable.
Memory foam mattresses aren’t known for their longevity, but we found that the Amerisleep AS5 lasts significantly longer than most other brands.
The company stands behind their product with a 20-year warranty against manufacturer defects. We obviously haven’t tested the AS5 throughout its entire lifespan (Amerisleep hasn’t even been in business for 20 years yet!), our extensive testing process indicates that this mattress will last a long time.
The Amerisleep AS5 has a great amount of edge support compared to other memory foam and hybrid mattresses. I never once felt like I was going to fall off when sitting on the edge of this bed, which is a great sign for its durability: mattresses with weak edge support don’t tend to last as long.
Another common problem with memory foam beds is imprinting that occurs from repeated use. I’ve been sleeping on the AS5 nightly since receiving it and it still looks and feels like a brand new bed. The memory foam is extremely responsive: you’ll sink in when you sleep on it but it bounces back instantly when you roll out of bed in the morning. This is a great sign for the lifespan of the mattress. Since it doesn’t permanently print or sag you won’t have to worry about replacing it any time soon.
The Amerisleep AS5 is available in the following standard North American sizes:
- Twin (38″ x 74″)
- Twin XL (38″ x 80″)
- Full (54″ x 75″)
- Queen (60″ x 80″)
- King (76″ x 80″)
- California King (72″ x 84″)
- Split King – memory foam version only (38″ x 80″ – 2)
The AS5 is the thickest mattress that Amerisleep offers, measuring in at 14″ tall.
Pricing depends on the size of the mattress and on whether you want the hybrid version or the memory foam version. Hybrids are much more expensive than the pure memory foam beds because they add a layer of coils for added support. Use coupon code SLEEPLINE to get a 30% discount on the AS5 or any other Amerisleep mattress.

Amerisleep offers a generous warranty on the AS5 (and all of their other mattresses). The warranty lasts 20 years and is broken down into two sections: the first 10 years after purchase and the second 10 years.
The first 10 year period is also known as the “full replacement period”. If you have a problem with the construction of your AS5 during this period contact the company. Amerisleep will determine if your mattress should be repaired or replaced due to defects of faulty workmanship or structural defects, subject to the limitations of the warranty.
During the second prorated period, the company will either repair or replace your mattress at 50 percent of the original purchase price. Repairing the mattress will be subject to a handling charge and you’re responsible for transportation and shipping costs in addition to the prorated charges.
The warranty covers:
Deterioration in the cell structure of the mattress that causes a visible indentation greater than three-quarter of an inc (0.75″).
Splitting and cracking that occurs with normal usage and proper handling.
The warranty does not apply if:
- You use an improper foundation.
- The mattress, foundation, or cover has been abused, burned, saturated with moisture, cut, or torn.
- You are not the original purchaser of the mattress.
Unless you live near one of Amerisleep’s retail outlets you won’t have a chance to try the mattress before you buy it. Fortunately the trial period gives you the opportunity to use the mattress risk-free in your own home for 100 days. If you decide that the AS5 isn’t for you contact the company for a full and complete refund. Amerisleep will even arrange for your mattress to be picked up and recycled.
The free trial begins on the night that you receive your bed. If you buy it with an adjustable platform as well, the trial period doesn’t start until the platform and bed both arrive so you can see how you like the whole set.
When returning your mattress you can choose between either a full and complete refund OR a replacement mattress. If you like what Amerisleep is doing but think the AS5 is a little bit too soft, just let them know which model you want to replace it with and the company will send a new one out.
The Amerisleep AS5 has a 4.5/5 star customer satisfaction rating on Amerisleep.com. Customers praised it for pain relief, comfort, high-quality materials, and for being cheaper than similar beds from other brands.
