A quick internet search of mattresses will throw hundreds of brands at you. Who in the world makes all those mattresses? Some of the best ones are surely made right here in the USA. Others are made overseas. Today we’re going into details, looking at where individual mattress brands are made. Our team went through information on the most popular brands and some of our findings may surprise you.
Where different mattress brands are made
Mattresses that you can buy online or in physical stores today can be manufactured anywhere in the world. There’s a vast selection of USA mattress manufacturers, but at the same time, there are innumerable foreign manufacturers, predominantly from Asia.
- 12 Park mattresses are designed, sourced, and manufactured in the USA. Their all-foam mattresses are either made of gel memory foam or have their special AirCool foam.
- Airweave mattresses are all made in Japan. They have a unique, firm support layer made of proprietary airfiber® which makes the bed super comfortable. That is if you’re a fan of firmer beds. They also make high-end Japanese futon mattresses.
- Amerisleep mattresses are produced in the US. It would be quite ironic if they weren’t, right? Their most popular models are hybrid mattresses with Bio-Pur® foam, which is their proprietary type of memory foam.
- Avocado is a US company; their mattresses are designed in New Jersey and handmade in California. They source materials from the US and internationally to make anything from a crib mattress to a luxury hybrid mattress. Avocado mattresses contain organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton cover.
- Awara mattresses are manufactured in China and their strong points are in their materials – natural latex, organic cotton, and New Zealand wool.
- Bear mattresses are manufactured in the USA together with all the materials. This very popular manufacturer offers a copper-infused memory foam mattress model as a premium foam mattress, but you can also find a Bear mattress as an innerspring hybrid.
- Casper mattresses are produced worldwide – some are made in the USA, some in Canada, Mexico, and some in Asia. As we were told by the company, you can’t know where the mattress is from until you receive and open it. Casper mattresses have zoned support and all of their models are innerspring mattresses (hybrids) except for the original model.
- Comfy is a US brand and all their mattresses are made in the USA. Their Premium model is a cooling mattress with graphite foam and a cooling cover, designed with hot sleepers in mind.
- DreamCloud mattresses are manufactured in China. They specialize in hybrid luxury mattresses and their premium model is as much as 16″ tall!
- Layla mattresses are American-made mattresses. They are flippable, which means that one side is soft, and when you flip it, it’s medium-firm. We don’t recommend it for stomach sleepers because they typically need firmer mattresses. Side sleepers are welcome!
- Mainstays mattresses are made in the USA. These affordable (not to say cheap) models come as an innerspring mattress, a memory foam mattress, or a futon.
- Molecule mattresses are American-made mattresses. Some real research and development has been put into these mattresses. Every single layer in all their models is trademarked, so you get unique zoned support, a top layer that improves circulation and cell function, and a special open-cell foam for supreme airflow.
- Natural Form is made in the USA and it has a hybrid mattress line with a special pressure relief system and firmness options that you can change by adjusting the knob on the side of the bed.
- Noa mattresses are manufactured in China. It’s a Canadian company and all innovations come from that country. Noa claims that it makes high-quality mattresses and has a number of certifications to prove it. We love the micro-coil system in their hybrid mattresses.
- Nolah mattresses are USA-made together with sourcing all the materials. They take pride in the Nolah AirFoam® and AirFoamICE® foam materials (the latter is graphite-infused) which sleep cooler and give better support than common foam beds. Nolah also offers latex foam mattresses.
- Okioki mattress materials are sourced from all over the world and assembled in Mexico or Asia. Okioki mattresses contain memory foam and you can choose between all-foam and hybrids.
- Puffy offers American-made mattresses. They are designed for side sleepers as much as for stomach and back sleepers, according to the manufacturer. Their innerspring beds have better edge support than their all-foam model, but all three have excellent pressure relief.
- Purple mattresses are manufactured in the USA. All of their models contain a special purple grid as the top layer.
- Saatva is another American-made mattress that people love. Specially treated for inhibition of bacteria and mold, encased in a breathable cover made of organic materials, it has excellent edge support and zoned support for the lumbar area.
- Simba mattresses are made in Derby, England. Their open-cell foam is called Simbatex® and it’s supposed to sleep much cooler than regular memory foam.
- Slumber Solutions mattresses are made in the USA. They are all-foam mattresses with three layers of thick foam. Their Ebony model is infused with activated carbon to help dissipate body heat from the top memory foam layer.
- SweetNight mattresses are assembled and made in China with materials from the United States. They offer all-foam beds and hybrids with thick foam layers.
- Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made in the USA and they use improved memory foam. These mattresses are known to be heavy and firm because of the specific structure made of dense foam layers.
- Vibe mattresses from Classic Brands are made in two locations – some models are USA-made and some in Classic Brands facilities in China. These gel-infused memory foam beds are affordable and come as a mattress only or a mattress and platform bundle.
- WinkBeds are made in the USA with American-sourced materials. Their hybrid beds have special coils on the sides for superior edge support, and their latex hybrid is the natural option with an organic cotton cover.
How to find an American-made mattress?
One good way is to refer to our list from above. Many mattresses that are available in the market today are made and sourced right here, in the US. But there are also those that are sourced internationally and assembled here, and those that are sourced here but assembled internationally.
If you’re interested in a particular brand that’s not on the list above, you should check their website. Most manufacturers are proud to say that their products are made in the United States and they typically place a badge or an American flag somewhere where it’s easily seen. If not, look further on their website, specifically the FAQ or About us page.
Some manufacturers seem to hold this information for themselves, but if you contact customer support, they will tell you all the details. A lot of websites have a chat box that opens right up when you visit their website, and it’s easy to contact them.
And even if they state that their mattress is “proudly made in the USA”, the materials may still be from elsewhere, so if you’re that dedicated to getting a 100% American-made mattress, be sure to ask the support for clarifications.
Why are mattresses manufactured in different countries?
Some mattresses are made in, say, China or the UK because that’s where their companies are based. But the reason some American brands decide to outsource a part of or all of their production to places like China, India, Vietnam, etc., is in the profit margins.
We’re primarily talking about countries with cheap labor. If you pay a Chinese worker a lot less than you would an American worker, you get both – to keep the price of your product lower/more competitive and to earn more money.
Moving away from workers – there are also the existing facilities. This allows you to only do the design work and have someone else store raw materials, employ workers, pay for all the extra costs, and assemble the product. They are already manufacturing mattresses and they already have entire factories set up, you’re just one of the clients they serve. This way factories in Asia have lots of work to do and that gives them room to keep the prices lower. If you were to build new factories in the US (or even use the existing ones), the whole project would cost way more.
Still, not everything’s in profit – many manufacturers have recognized the importance of making their products in the USA. It’s common for Americans to put far more trust into products made at home. For them, this means higher quality and a longer product lifespan, and for many, this is also a way to support the local economy and local businesses.
FAQs
What country makes the most mattresses?
China is by far the biggest leader in making and exporting mattresses. In 2020, China was the top exporter of mattresses in the world, and the US was the biggest mattress importer.
They are trying to find ways to have fewer overhead costs and higher profit margins. Whatever combination pays off best is what some companies choose. This is why it’s possible to run into a weird situation such as with Casper – when you buy their product, you can’t know if it was made in the US, China, or some other place until you open it.
Conclusion
There’s an enormous choice in high-quality US-made mattresses, but the global (and US) market is definitely dominated by China as the leading mattress manufacturer. While some companies outsource manufacturing to Asia or other places in order to cut down on costs, others take pride in their American-made products. Consumers who care about where their mattresses come from should pay special attention and double-check the information they find on manufacturers’ websites.
