My experience with Sleepmax Podium

I honestly liked how the Sleepmax Podium mattress performed (for the most part), but it does seem as though they rely a bit too much on (easily debunked) marketing jargon.

This is somewhat off-putting.

Aside from that and its absurdly poor edge support, the Sleepmax Podium actually does a good job at providing responsive support.

In fact, it feels very much like a latex mattress to the point that I can barely tell the difference.

Even though it is made up of polyfoam, I still found the Sleepmax Podium to be cooling and it did not retain any of my body heat the way memory foam does, making it a good choice for hot sleepers.

Firmness

The Sleepmax Podium comes in three different firmness levels: plush, medium, and firm.

The plush version is best for side sleepers.

The medium version is good for all sleeper types, with the caveat that petite side sleepers may find the it to be a bit too firm for their main pressure points.

The firm version is best for back sleepers and stomach sleepers.

Side sleepers should opt for either the plush or medium firmness level.

The Sleepmax Podium can support heavier-set people and provide them with the extra support they need.

Cooling Test

We rate the Sleepmax Podium an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Although the Sleepmax Podium feels like latex foam, it’s actually made up of layers of proprietary polyfoam.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it does not retain any heat.

I would definitely recommend this mattress to those who sleep hot.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Sleepmax Podium a 7 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Motion test on Sleepmax Podium
Motion isolation was OK, but not great.

Because the comfort foam layers of the Sleepmax Podium feel just like latex foam, it also means that it has the spring and bounce that latex foam is most known for.

I can’t say that the motion transfer is really bad on the Sleepmax Podium, but you may feel a tiny amount of movement, especially if you share a bed with a partner who’s significantly heavier than you are.

Edge Support Test

We rate the Sleepmax Podium a 5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Instead of reinforced coils, the Sleepmax Podium uses foam rails along its entire perimeter.

In theory, this should be enough to provide the mattress with solid edge support but the reality is, edge support on the Sleepmax Podium is pretty much zilch.

Pressure Relief Test

We rate the Sleepmax Podium a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

What our hands-on sleep test looks like. It’s a hard job, but someone has to do it.

If you’re looking for cushioning that only memory foam mattresses can provide, look elsewhere.

While pressure-relieving enough (especially for back and stomach sleepers), the Sleepmax Podium provides responsiveness and support rather than compression, which is why it gets this rating.

Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing depends entirely on what you’re looking for from a mattress.

Don’t get me wrong though, I like the fact that the mattress provides zoned support, especially in the center of the mattress (which helps keep your spign properly aligned).

Construction

There are five layers in the Sleepmax Podium.

These layers come encased in a cool-to-the-touch cover that’s both breathable and moisture-wicking.

Sleepmax Podium mattress profile view
The Podium is made from five (5) different layers.

The first comfort layer is made up of proprietary polyfoam that feels and acts just like latex foam, providing responsive support rather than “give”.

Underneath that lies a layer of cooling gel-infused high density foam that helps provide extra support while also acting as a transition layer.

The coil unit is made up of pocketed spring coils that provide zoned and targeted support. Instead of edge coils, high density foam rails surround the coil unit.

The base layer is made up of high resilience foam that helps hold the other layers together and provide stability.

Durability

For its price point, I can say that the Sleepmax Podium falls a little short of my expectations when it comes to how long it can hold up.

While the mattress’ overall performance is pretty good, the materials won’t last as long as an actual latex foam mattress would.

Where to buy the Sleepmax Podium mattress

The best place to buy the Podium is on Sleepmax’s official website.

I always recommend buying direct from the manufacturer to protect yourself.

No matter what mattress companies say, they always give customer service priority to their direct customers. When you buy from third party sites, a lot of times you’re nothing more than an afterthought.

But if you really want to, you can also buy it on Amazon.

Conclusion

It’s quite rare to find latex foam alternatives that provice the exact same feel and responsive support as true latex mattresses, but the Sleepmax Podium has got it down pat.

I was most impressed by its cooling and motion isolation capabilities. I didn’t like how it performed in the edge support and motion isolation portions of my hands-on tests.

The Podium isn’t the best mattress I’ve tried, but it’s not the worst either.

I don’t think it’s the right choice for most people, but for a certain type of sleeper (one who’s also willing to take a chance on an unknown brand), it might be just what you’re looking for.
