  • Relieves pressure

Cons

Why it’s the best mattress without fiberglass

The Bear Original mattress features a fiberglass-free all-foam construction (no coils).

The medium-firm feel skews a little firmer, which means it can fully support you if you sleep on your back or stomach.

The best thing though, imho, is its motion-isolating properties which are near perfect, if I do say so myself.

Bear Original Performance Test Results

The Bear Original sits at a 6-7 on the mattress firmness scale, giving it a medium-firm to firm feel.

This firmness level is best for back and stomach sleepers as it gives them the lumbar and back support they need.

Side sleepers may find the Bear Original to be a bit too firm though and should opt for something softer.

We rate the Bear Original a 7 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Had it been a bit softer then then my rating would have been higher but its firmness level can only provide enough pressure point relief to those who sleep on their backs and stomachs.

We rate the Bear Original a 5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

It really isn’t surprising that an all-foam mattress is heat-retentive. If you sleep hot, then I suggest choosing another fiberglass-free mattress on this list.

We rate the Bear Original a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The one thing that all-foam mattresses can do extremely well is absorb movement. This mattress did very well in my motion isolation tests.

We rate the Bear Original a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The Bear Original does not contain any reinforced edges which means the edge support on it is pretty much non-existent.

#2. Helix Midnight

Testing out the fiberglass-free Helix Midnight mattress
Helix Midnight Mattress

Pros

  • Great for couples
  • Pressure-relieving
  • Good for side sleepers
  • Responsive support

Cons

  • Not good for heavier-set back sleepers
  • Slight off-gassing during unboxing

Why it’s one of the best

Consistent and steadfast are two things that come to mind when I think about the Helix Midnight mattress.

But what really wowed me is its ability to provide deep compression without any of the sinkage that’s usually associated with mattresses made from memory foam.

As far as fiberglass-free mattresses go, the Helix Midnight can support most sleeper types very comfortably, with the exception of heavier-set back sleepers.

Heavy back sleepers need extra lumbar support and the Helix Midnight, though labeled medium-firm, may feel softer for heavier people. If you fall into this category, I recommend upgrading to the more-supportive Midnight Luxe or Midnight Elite.

Other than that one specific edge case, this is a phenomenal mattress.

See our full article on whether Helix mattresses contain fiberglass for more info.

Helix Midnight Performance Test Results

The Helix Midnight sits at a 6 on the mattress firmness scale, giving it a medium-firm feel.

While this firmness level is good for most sleeper types, those who weigh well over 300 lbs. may find the Helix Midnight to be a little too soft.

We rate the Helix Midnight a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The proprietary memory foam layers provide more than enough pressure point relief to the point that it gets a near-perfect rating from me. It was one of the best I’ve ever tried.

We rate the Helix Midnight a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Although it contains a coil unit, which usually helps with air flow, I found that the foam layers retained quite a good amount of heat. I do not recommend this mattress if you are a hot sleeper.

We rate the Helix Midnight an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The foam layers do a very good job at absorbing cross-mattress movement. I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Helix Midnight a 7 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress does contain reinforced edge coils they don’t seem to provide enough edge support. It’s not the worst but it’s not much to write home about either.

#3. Leesa Original

Fiberglass-free Leesa Original mattress

Cons

  • Edge support could be better

Why it’s one of the best

Definitely one of the best fiberglass-free memory foam mattresses that I have ever tried, the Leesa Original mattress is quite possibly the best one specifically for those who are dealing with chronic pain.

The comfort layer of the Leesa Original mattress cradles the contours of your body for pressure relief, which is the most important thing if you suffer from fibromyalgia.

I also like the fact that it has a medium firmness which makes it good for just about everyone.

Leesa Original Performance Test Results

The Leesa Original is a 5 on the mattress firmness scale, giving it a true medium feel.

This firmness level is good for all sleeper types.

We rate the Leesa Original a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

No surprises here, but just like all memory foam mattresses worth their salt, this one did very well in my pressure point relief tests.

We rate the Leesa Original a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

It’s true that memory foam can be heat-retentive but I found it to sleep relatively cool.

We rate the Leesa Original a 9 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

All-foam mattresses are king when it comes to motion isolation. I didn’t feel any cross-mattress movement whatsoever when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Leesa Original a 7 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Without reinforced edge coils, it has somewhat average edge support. It’s not terrible, but if you are heavier-set, you will sink into the edge of the bed.

  • Pressure-relieving
  • Suitable for back sleepers and combination sleepers

Cons

  • Not as cooling as I would have liked
  • Not good for stomach sleepers

Why it’s one of the best

One of the more reasonably-priced fiberglass-free mattresses on this list, the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex is an all-rounder that performs consistently across the board.

What I like the most about it is that it provides targeted support, which essentially means you get more support in areas where you need it most. This also helps you achieve proper spinal alignment.

This effect is even more pronounced in the higher-end CopperFlex Pro variant.

Cooling is where the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex falls short though, so if you’re a hot sleeper, you might want to steer clear.

Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Performance Test Results

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex mattress sits on a 7 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm-to-firm feel.

This mattress firmness is best for those who only sleep on their backs and stomachs.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Multiple foam layers work well together with its coil unit to provide the right amount of pressure relief as well as zoned, targeted support. It did very well in my comfort tests.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex a 6 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Aside from the cooling cover, it doesn’t contain any other cooling materials which sadly means it retains a good amount of heat. Its performance was average in my cooling tests.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex an 8 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The mattress does a great job of absorbing movement thanks to its multiple foam layers. I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The mattress contains reinforced edge coils which give it extra edge support. This allows you to use more of the mattress surface.

#5. Nolah Evolution

Nolah Evolution mattress being tested for fiberglass

Pros

  • Soft and luxurious
  • Cooling
  • Pressure-relieving
  • Good for all sleeper types

Cons

  • Can be a bit pricey
  • Edge support could be better

Why it’s one of the best

If plush luxuriousness is what you’re after then you can’t go wrong with the Nolah Evolution mattress.

What I really liked about is that it feels like sleeping on a 5-star hotel bed and I actually woke up pain-free from the neck pain that’s been bothering me lately.

One thing of note that has really impressed me with the Nolah Evolution is that it features a border gusset – something that not a lot of mattresses have. The border gusset allows air to flow through freely and continuously keeping the mattress cool and airy.

Nolah Evolution Performance Test Results

You get to choose between 3 different firmness levels: plush, luxury firm, and firm.

The plush version is best for side sleepers. The luxury firm version is good for all sleeper types including combination sleepers. The firm version is best for back and stomach sleepers.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Though plush and soft, it still provides enough support so that your lumbar area won’t be compromised. But the best feature is that it also helps with pain relief. It did exceptionally well in my comfort tests.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Practically every layer is made up of actively-cooling materials making it one of the coolest mattresses on this list.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Though not exactly bad, the motion-isolating properties are not the best either. You will experience a tiny bit of motion transfer, especially if you share a bed with a partner who’s heavier than you are.

We rate the Nolah Evolution a 7 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Aside from the border gusset, it also contains reinforced edge coils which gives the mattress good edge support.

Why it’s one of the best

Naturally cooling and hypoallergenic, the Birch Natural mattress is good for hot sleepers as well as those who suffer from chronic allergies.

Based on my testing, the Birch Natural mattress also has the best edge support out of all the mattresses on this list.

It’s also backed by industry-leading organic certifications, so you know it doesn’t contain fiberglass or any other harmful components.

Birch Natural Performance Test Results

The Birch Natural is around a 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm feel.

This mattress firmness level is good for all sleeper types, but petite side sleepers may find it to be a tad too firm.

We rate the Birch Natural a 7 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

Aside from being a little too firm for comfort for petite side sleepers, it still provides more than enough pressure relief for most sleeper types.

We rate the Birch Natural a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Pure latex, which makes up the comfort layer, is naturally cooling. Combined with the mattress’ coil unit and organic wool layer makes for a very temperature regulating mattress. It did very well during my cooling tests.

We rate the Birch Natural a 6 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The downside to natural latex is that it’s bouncier than manmade foam which means you feel a large amount of motion transfer.

We rate the Birch Natural an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

The edge coils are thick and robust giving the mattress excellent edge support all around.

#7. Saatva Classic

Saatva mattress fiberglass-free
Saatva Classic

Pros

  • Good for all sleeper types
  • Comes in multiple foam layers
  • Good for couples
  • White glove delivery

Cons

  • Edge support is too firm
  • Expensive

Why it’s one of the best

With a simple and streamlined construction, the Saatva Classic is also the only fiberglass-free mattress on this list that comes with white glove delivery.

But don’t let its simplicity fool you though – every layer of the Saatva Classic is made with intention. Sleeping on the Saatva Classic is not only a very comfortable experience but one that consistently has you waking up pain-free.

The mattress also comes treated with Guardin – an antimicrobial treatment that helps with mold, mildew and other yuckies.

Specs at a glance

Thickness levels 11.5 inches, 14.5 inches
Firmness levels Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, Firm
Materials Organic cotton cover, Euro pillow top, gel-infused memory foam, 14.5 gauge recycled steel coils, high density foam rails, 13-gauge tempered steel base

Certification GOTS, CertiPUR-US

Saatva Classic Performance Test Results

You get to choose between three different firmness options: plush soft, luxury firm, and firm.

The plush soft is best for side sleepers. The luxury firm is good for all sleeper types. The firm version is best for those who sleep on their backs or stomachs.

We rate the Saatva Classic a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

For a mattress that contains only one comfort layer, it does a phenomenal job at providing pressure point relief no matter your preferred sleeping position.

We rate the Saatva Classic a 9.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The dual coil design and cooling gel-infused memory foam layer work together very well at keeping any heat retention at bay.

We rate the Saatva Classic an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

While not the best, it still does a great job at deadening any cross-mattress movement. I barely felt any motion transfer when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the Saatva Classic a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

This is a case of ‘too much of a good thing can be a bad thing’ – the Saatva Classic’s edges are raised a little too high and feel a little too firm which can make it uncomfortable for you to lay on if you’re the type of sleeper who likes sleeping close to the edge of the mattress.

#8. Happsy Organic Mattress

Pros

Cons

  • Poor edge support

Why it’s one of the best

You know very well that latex hybrid mattresses tend to go for premium prices, but the Happsy Organic Mattress is one of the more affordable ones.

Happsy manages to keep their costs down by sourcing and producing everything in-house instead of outsourcing.

But besides the price tag, I really like the quality of the construction. It both looks and feels like higher-end brands.

Happsy Organic Mattress Performance Test Results

You have two options to choose from: plush and medium-firm.

Plush is best if you’re a side sleeper while the medium-firm is good for all other sleeper types.

We rate the Happsy Organic an 8 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

The mattress did very well in my pressure relief tests. Keep in mind that latex mattresses don’t have as much give as you’re used to with memory foam, so it’ll feel more like sleeping on top of the mattress rather than ‘in’ it.

We rate the Happsy Organic a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

Pure latex is naturally cooling, and the addition of temperature-regulating wool batting makes for a very cool sleeping experience.

We rate the Happsy Organic a 7.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Natural latex is bound to be springier than manmade foam but I still found it to perform well in absorbing movement when we did our motion isolation tests.

We rate the Happsy Organic a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

For some reason, the mattress does not contain any reinforced edge coils which leaves its edge support pretty much nonexistent.

#9. WinkBeds EcoCloud

WinkBeds EcoCloud testing
WinkBeds EcoCloud

Pros

Cons

  • Not good for side sleepers
  • Poor motion isolation

Why it’s one of the best

The WinkBeds EcoCloud did very well in my back support tests.

If you have back pain, this is definitely a mattress that should be on your short list. I found that it did a great job at cradling and supporting my lower back in particular.

I also like the fact that the WinkBeds EcoCloud is very cooling and has excellent edge support.

It’s also marketed as being an all-natural mattress. I found that those claims are true. The EcoCloud doesn’t contain any harmful components (including fiberglass).

WinkBeds EcoCloud Performance Test Results

The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a 6 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm to firm feel.

This firmness level is best for those who sleep on their backs and stomachs.

We rate the WinkBeds EcoCloud a 7 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

For back and stomach sleepers, the mattress provides ample pressure point relief while still supporting the lumbar area for better spinal alignment.

We rate the WinkBeds EcoCloud an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

The Talalay latex foam did very well in my cooling tests. If you’re a hot sleeper, this is definitely a mattress you should consider buying.

We rate the WinkBeds EcoCloud a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

Sadly, the mattress fared poorly in my motion isolation tests. I experienced a lot of motion transfer when I tried it out with a partner. This shouldn’t be an issue though if you are a single sleeper.

We rate the WinkBeds EcoCloud an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Extra edge coils surround the perimeter, giving it very good edge support.

#10. SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam

SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam mattress sleep test

Pros

  • Best for back and stomach sleepers
  • Budget-friendly
  • Cooling
  • Great motion isolation

Cons

  • Poor edge support

Why it’s one of the best

Aside from being affordable, the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam mattress can support heavier-set sleepers which is pretty rare for all-foam brands.

Now we all know that memory foam is tantamount to extreme pressure relief and I have to say, I woke up virtually pain-free with the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam mattress.

Another plus that I appreciated with the SweetNight CoolNest memory foam mattress is that it absorbs movement very, VERY well making it the perfect choice for those who share a bed with a partner.

Like all the brands on this list, our tests confirmed that it’s fiberglass-free.

SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam Performance Test Results

The SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam mattress sits on a 6.5 on the mattress firmness scale giving it a medium-firm to firm feel.

This firmness level is best for back and stomach sleepers.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to comfort and pressure relief.

If only this were soft enough for side sleepers, the rating would be higher. But for back and stomach sleepers, it does provide enough pressure point relief.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.

For an all-foam mattress, it surprisingly sleeps cool, which means it’s a good option for those who tend to sleep hot.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam a 10 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.

The mattress absorbs cross-mattress movement amazingly well. I did not feel any motion transfer whatsoever when I tried the mattress out with a partner.

We rate the SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam a 6 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.

Due to the lack of reinforced edges and edge coils, it didn’t do so well in my edge support tests.

How we chose these mattresses

We picked these mattresses based on a complete list of factors that we believe make up not just a great mattress that’s also fiberglass-free. We used the following criteria:

  • Lack of fiberglass – We opened up the mattresses and made sure that none of them contained fiberglass or any other similar materials. Fiberglass is a health hazard and can be very difficult to clean if it leaks from a mattress, so making sure that it was not present in any of the brands we tested was crucial. Mattresses that contain fiberglass were not eligible for inclusion for this list.
  • Pressure relief – Everyone has pressure points and this is important when it comes to choosing the right mattress. Depending on a person’s sleeping position, mattress firmness can greatly affect whether you would get enough pressure relief or not. We chose mattresses that offer maximum pressure relief.
  • Cooling – Sleeping hot is the number one cause of sleeplessness. Choosing mattresses that offer superb cooling capabilities is crucial to getting a good night’s sleep.
  • Firmness – Mattress firmness correlates to one’s preferred sleeping position and we chose mattresses that can suit most, if not all, sleeping positions from back sleeping to stomach sleeping and side sleeping.
  • Motion isolation – Picking a mattress that offers good motion isolation is important if you share a bed with a partner. We chose mattresses that are suitable for couples.
  • Edge support – Not only does edge support help (and protect) those who prefer sleeping close to the edge of the bed, having a mattress with good edge support also provides you with a wider mattress surface.
  • Durability – We chose mattresses that we know would last long and ones that come with reasonable return policies.

Conclusion

Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.

Fiberglass is a toxic material that I believe shouldn’t be present in any mattress.

The mattresses on this list are all fiberglass-free and have been chosen not only for the safety aspect but because they performed well in all of the standard Sleepline Performance Tests.

How we rate mattresses

We personally test and rate mattresses using the following strict quantitative criteria:

  1. Comfort
  2. Structural integrity and durability
  3. Firmness and support
  4. Cooling capabilities
  5. Pressure relief
  6. Edge support
  7. Motion isolation
