The fascinating new technology behind the Apollo Neuro aims at lowering your stress and anxiety levels by transmitting vibrations through a band that you wear on your wrist or ankle. These vibrations imitate the feeling of a human touch. It’s designed to train you and your nervous system to accept the vibrations as a cue to relax, get energized, focus, relax, or doze off – depending on the program you choose.

Unlike other wearables, the Apollo Neuro doesn’t measure anything. The Apollo device emits vibrations that are supposed to get you to start feeling a certain way. Some users say it’s just placebo, some are excited to say it works wonderfully well, while some complain about the device not affecting their mood whatsoever. In this review, we’ll evaluate the Apollo Neuro and let you know what you can expect from this unique device.

Apollo Neuro – How It Functions
In short, Apollo uses clinically-tested vibration patterns that are proven to optimize HRV (there are many studies on this topic).
HRV stands for the heart rate variability. When you’re calm, your heart beats slower than when you’re under stress. This means that sometimes there’s more time between two heartbeats and sometimes less. This difference is good – it shows the ability of the body to recover from stress. Since the difference between the heartbeats at different times is big, we call this high HRV.
Unhealthy HRV would mean that your heartbeats are similar when you’re resting to when you’re playing sports or stressing over something. For people with anxiety, it’s hard to relax so their heart may be racing when they’re at work as well as when in a bathtub or lying in bed. Since these people have HRV that’s similar at all times, we say that they have low HRV.
Apollo Neuro is built upon the idea that you can alter your mood by picking one of the modes in the app, so if you want to slow yourself down in the evening, choose the Relax and Unwind mode. This mode is supposed to give you tender vibrations released in patterns that promote relaxation. As a result, you should be calmer (as you could expect from a mode that’s called “Relax and Unwind”).
It also has the Sleep and Renew program which probably reaps the most praise as it shows the most obvious improvement for most users. They typically notice their sleep latency being well below 10 minutes as compared to the usual 15+ minutes. The sleep program goes on while you’re sleeping and it seems to improve the amount of deep sleep in some users. If you’re buying this device to fall asleep, this will be one of your favorite modes.
It is difficult to know how much this device actually helps you (aside from dozing off momentarily) because, as we mentioned, it doesn’t show any measurements. You need another wearable to track your sleep and HRV and compare how you’re doing with and without the Apollo Neuro. Since the Apollo is already bulky and expensive, it seems like too much of a hassle to try and measure these variables (unless you already own an Oura ring, Whoop strap, Withings Sleep, etc).
Finally, the Apollo is supposed to help you find your balance – not just relieve stress or get you to be active, but rather to increase your “physical and mental balance” through the different modes.
At first glance, it looks like an Apple Watch or other type of smartwatch or fitness tracker. Wearing Apollo is a completely different experience, however, because it doesn’t have a distracting screen. It just silently does its job, relieving insomnia and improving your wellness without you even noticing it’s there.

Patience is a virtue. Wait for it…
You should be patient with this product. The main idea of the Apollo Neuro isn’t actually to give you instant relief the first time you use it, but rather to “train” your nervous system through everyday usage of the wearable (similar to other products such as Cove). The more days you wear it, the better it will work.
You’re supposed to wear it daily for about a month and use its features actively. This way, you’ll become better responsive to the cues from the bracelet. I wore it on my right wrist on a daily basis for a few weeks before I really started really noticing how Apollo works. The goal is to get more energy and productivity, be healthier and more resilient to stress, fall asleep faster, and sleep more calmly – all at the tap of the app.

Apollo Neuro Modes
The seven modes are:
- Energy and Wake Up
- Social and Open
- Clear and Focused
- Rebuild and Recover
- Meditation and Mindfulness
- Relax and Unwind
- Sleep and Renew
Each mode has a different pattern of vibrations; and for each one, there are duration and intensity set by default but you can customize both. You can choose the intensity on a scale from 1-100% – just pick a number that works for you at a given moment. Also, if you wish for one of the modes to last longer, you can change the duration in your app.
Since these two are customizable, it’s clear what’s the most important aspect of these vibrations – the pattern. Patterns may come in energetic bursts or give out a gentle purr to relax you. The meditation and mindfulness option is much more gentle than the energy and wake up mode, for example.
When trying out Apollo, Rebuild and Recover as well as Sleep and Renew were our two favorite modes. Even though those two are our favorite, we recommend trying out all of the different vibration modes so you can get the full Apollo experience. Energy and Wake Up is another good option to try, and some of our reviewers liked Social and Open as well.

Frequently asked questions
Does Apollo Neuro work?
Based on our testing, Apollo Neuro did help our reviewers relax and sleep better. We can’t really know how much of it can be attributed to the placebo effect and how much it really helps by interacting with your nervous system, however.
Apollo Neuroscience has published studies showing that their product improves cognitive performance, heart rate variability, and reduces stress. You may go to their website and check out their studies page to find a list of the research.
Based on our consumer research; what we know for certain is that some users love the Apollo device, saying it helps them sleep, relax, and get focused, while others disappointedly say it didn’t do anything for them.
We found that the gentle waves that Apollo delivers helped relieve our chronic stress, made falling asleep easier, aided physical recovery, improved energy levels and blood flow, and helped us stay clear and focused.
You might also want to consider Moonbird if you want a similar stress-relief device (although it focuses more on breathwork rather than neural training).
How long should I use Apollo?
When you first start using it, the company recommends wearing Apollo for a minimum of 2 hours per day over the course of 30 days. When you use it for a longer time and more consistently, the vibration pattern is supposed to work better as your nervous system get used to the vibration cues. When your nervous system gets completely used to it is when you’ll experience better sleep and have the best results for your overall health, based on the company’s claims.
Is Apollo Neuro waterproof?
Apollo is not waterproof, but it is water-resistant. This means that it won’t break if you get rained on or splashed by water, but you shouldn’t use Apollo in the shower or while swimming.
Is Apollo Neuro safe?
Apollo Neuro is safe – you might feel some numbness if you turn it on the highest intensity level, but generally, it’s harmless, even with long term use. It is also very quiet, so you won’t suffer any consequences from noise when using Apollo.
How do you reset Apollo Neuro?
For factory reset, first go to the bluetooth settings on your phone and choose the “Forget” or “Unpair” option. Then take the Apollo – make sure it’s not charging – and press and hold both buttons. First, you’ll see the little light turn yellow, and then red. It turns red after 10 seconds, and that’s when you can let go.
Then press the dot button once. This will turn the blue light on, which means your Apollo is ready to be paired with the phone again.
Can you wear Apollo Neuro when you exercise?
The Apollo Neuro device is designed to improve your focus and energy before you exercise. Wearing the band in-between sets and after your workout can also help your recovery. We didn’t personally try out the Apollo wearable during our workout. The company claims that they haven’t tested the device during active, strenuous exercise. They specifically state on their website that they don’t recommend using the device during physical activity.

About Apollo Neuroscience
Apollo Neuroscience was co-founded by Dr. David Rabin, MD, PhD and his wife, Kathryn Fantauzzi in 2016. She is the CEO of Apollo.
Founder David Rabin began conducting research on Apollo in 2014 at the University of Pittsburgh. He was particularly interested in relieving the chronic stress that many of the patients in his clinical practice were experiencing. He noticed that stress relief improved many of the symptoms his patients were experiencing.
Based on his extensive research, he noticed that touch therapy was one of the most important and overlooked ways to manage stress. He noticed that touch had an incredible ability to reduce stress, which led him to develop a device that would deliver gentle vibrations to his patients wrist or ankle.
When researchers conducted clinical trials and tests in both the lab and the real world, they discovered that the device significantly reduced chronic stress, improved focus, and improved sleep. Rabin and his co-founder Fantauzzi decided to finally take the product out of the University of Pittsburgh lab and release it to the public.
Apollo Neuro retails for $349 and the device available for purchase from their website.
They are located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
