The Withings Sleep Tracking Mat is a non-wearable sleep tracker that offers sleep cycle analysis, heart rate tracking and snore detection. It is easy to set-up and automatically syncs to the Health Mate app through Wi-Fi. It also features IFTTT integration for scenarios such as the dimming of lights when you’re about to go to bed or to turn up your thermostat when you’ve woken up.
How does this sleep tracker work?
Unlike other sleep tracking devices, the Withings Mat doesn’t require you to wear anything for it to work. What you need to do is to slide the device underneath your mattress simply. Once it is properly placed, it can start monitoring your sleep quality. Compared to the Withings Aura, the Sleep Tracking Mat is pretty basic. It doesn’t have the advanced light and sound program that can help users get better sleep. Another Withings product, the Withings Pulse has an oximeter that measures oxygen saturation.
Fairly Simple Set Up Process
In theory, this mat is easy to set up. But it can get tricky. For one, it needs to be plugged in for it to work, so you need to have a socket near your bed. The cable is long enough, but you may need to use an extension cord if the power outlet is too far. The mat should also be placed in the exact place where your heart will be if you want to get optimum results. It may take a few tries just to get the perfect placement. The sleep sensor pad should not be placed under your head or at the bottom of the bed.
Only For One Person & Needs to Be Placed Perfectly
The advance sleep sensor also works for just one person. That being said, it may pose a problem for those who sleep with a partner. The placement of the mat should be exact since it might accidentally detect the heart rate of the one sharing your bed or detect the circadian rhythm of the said person. Another downside is that those who frequently travel may not be able to fully utilize the mat since it entails bringing the mat with you and setting it up in your temporary bed.
Integrates with many Apps
It comes with a companion app called Health Mate. You sync the companion app to your mobile device through Wifi after which you can check your detailed sleeping stats.
But that’s not all of the mat’s capabilities. It also has IFTTT that lets you automate your sleeping environment. The mat can detect when you get in and out of bed. Once connected to a compatible device, it can adjust the lights and thermostat.
This device is a direct competition to the Beddit Sleep Monitor. Aside from those metrics that the Withings can measure, the Beddit sensor can also measure respiration, temperature and room humidity. Needless to say, the Beddit is more expensive compared to the Withings.
Sleep Tracking Performance
Sleep tracking is the core of the Withings. This mat can provide you with information like how much light, deep, and REM sleep you get each night. After combining this information, it gives you an overall sleep score which is calculated based on the total duration of your sleep and the time spent in restorative phases. You can see the exact percentages the sleep phases alongside the recommended length for each phase. It also tells you how much time you spent awake and how long it took you to fall asleep and get out of your bed each morning.
The great thing about this pad is that it doesn’t just give you your sleep stats. It also offers guidance on how you can improve your sleep scores. These tips won’t be new to those who are well-read when it comes to sleep improvement, but those who haven’t read any of the related literature will benefit from these tips. These tips include removing your mobile phone from your bedside table and keeping it out of your bedroom, dimming the lights in your bedroom, maintaining a regular sleeping and waking time. It might tell you to use white noise to mask the ambient sounds that are preventing you from getting good sleep. These are pretty basic advice that most of us either don’t know or don’t follow.
Another thing that it will tell you is your heart rate during the night. It also tells you how many snoring episodes you had and for how long. This is important to take note of since snoring can be a sign of a more serious sleeping disorder like sleep apnea.
Snoring is monitored using a microphone in the mat. If you’re not comfortable with the microphone function, you can just turn it using the Health Mate app.
The Withings uses some of the IFTTT applets. With IFTTT you can do things like set a scene when you get out of bed each morning. You can also use it to track your sleeping habits in a Google spreadsheet. These are nice little add-ons, but for them to work, you need to have a compatible device like the Amazon Echo.
One thing that is missing from this mat is an alarm clock functionality. It doesn’t even have a basic alarm which is unusual considering that this is a device concerned with sleep.
If you are trying to turn a new leaf with regards to your sleeping habits, the Health Mate can offer you some reminders that can guide you towards a better sleeping regimen. Like the app reminds you to drink a cup of tea before bedtime. Or a prompting you to drink a glass of water in the afternoon instead of coffee. You can customize these reminders and set the days when they go off. You can also select the time for each reminder.
The app also has an opt-in program called Sleep Smarter. It is an eight-week program that takes note of your sleep habits and uses those to give you suggestions that can lead to a good night’s sleep. One of the markers is called social jet lag. Social jet lag is how much your sleep schedule differs between weeknights and weekends. At the end of the Sleep Smarter program, Withings claim that it can increase your average sleep by 12 minutes a night. Although it sounds as if 12 minutes is negligible, every minute of quality sleep counts.

The Withings Sleep Tracking Mat is an excellent alternative for those who don’t want to wear sleep tracking devices but still want to monitor their sleep. Once set-up has been completed, it doesn’t need any human intervention. The data gathered by the device are insightful and can help in improving the quality of one’s sleep. Unlike other fitness and sleep trackers, you also don’t need to worry about the battery life of this mat since it is directly plugged into a power outlet. The downside with this product is that it is designed for just one user and may provide inaccurate information if the user shares the bed with a partner. The features are also limited when compared to wrist-worn fitness trackers that don’t limit themselves from sleep monitoring. Some fitness trackers can do a multitude of other things ranging from monitoring and measuring blood pressure and breathing patterns. Such fitness trackers can also be worn during workouts. That being said, if the mat is positioned correctly, the user can reap great rewards from the data provided by this mat.
