#1. Saatva Latex Pillow

Pros
- Hypoallergenic
- Cooling
- Responsive
Cons
- Can be somewhat pricey
- Not for those who prefer a more sunk-in feel
Our experience with Saatva
Made up of a combination of a 100% natural latex core and a down-like microdenier fill, the Saatva Latex pillow combines the plushness of real down with the buoyant, pressure-free support of latex. Known for their natural and organic mattresses, the Saatva pillow is also a hypoallergenic pillow, making it a good choice for those who suffer from seasonal allergies.
Compared to a memory foam pillow, latex pillows for stomach sleepers are naturally cooling. A cooling pillow can help exceptionally hot sleepers sleep a little bit cooler, especially around the head and neck area, where most people tend to sweat. This makes the Saatva pillow a solid choice for those who tend to sleep hot, especially when paired with a cooling mattress such as the Purple mattress.
Comfort
Thick and lofty, we found the Saatva pillow to bounce back immediately after laying on it, which could be a good indicator that the pillow won’t sag prematurely. A more responsive pillow feel also is great for those who hate a more sunk-in feel, especially for sleepers who tend to move around. Since the pillow is thick and hefty, it is also a good body pillow for stomach sleeping so there should be no need for you to buy a separate, specialized stomach sleeper pillow.
What really sets this pillow apart from the others is its down-like feel. Traditional feather pillows are ultra soft and very plush but upkeep can be tedious – it needs constant fluffing up and special cleaning. They are also more expensive and are mostly used in high-end hotels around the world. Although companies have now begun sourcing feathers and down humanely and ethically, feather pillows may also not be a good choice for those who live animal product-free lifestyles. Saatva’s Latex pillow could be a great alternative for those who would still like a hotel bed-like feel without the actual involvement of any ducks or geese.
Construction
The pillow cover is made from 100% organic cotton sateen. It is soft, breathable and helps wick away moisture. It features gusseted seams which helps keep the pillow’s shape intact. It is also removable and machine-washable, although the internal pillow itself is not. We quite liked the elegant overall look of the pillow which we think will not detract from any type of room decor.
We did not experience any off-gassing with the Saatva pillow, although natural, organic latex does tend to give off an earthy smell that we did not find unpleasant. If this bothers you though, you can air out your new pillow in a well-ventilated room for a day or two prior to use.

#2. PlushBeds Handmade Natural Wool Pillow
Check Current Price | Best Temperature Regulating Pillow
Pros
- Temperature regulating
- Good for all climates
- Good for all sleeper types
Cons
- Not for vegans
- Wool can have a distinct scent
Our experience with Plushbeds
In a world overrun by cheap, production line products, a lot of people nowadays put great stock into all things handmade and natural. Each and every PlushBeds Natural Wool pillow is handcrafted in the USA.
Humanely and ethically sourced, the wool used in the PlushBeds pillow contains no harsh scouring agents, dyes and chemicals that can lead to allergic reactions. 100% pure virgin wool is also naturally thermo-regulating. This means it can help you sleep cool when you feel hot and can also help you sleep warm when you feel cold. This makes it a good choice for stomach sleepers who live in an area that goes through all four seasons.
Wool is also naturally repelling to dust mites, making the PlushBeds Natural Wool pillow an excellent option for those who suffer from allergies.
Comfort
With a slightly different feel than foam or latex, wool-filled pillows are fluffier and act more like a contour pillow, cradling your head and neck. You can actually adjust the firmness by taking out or adding more wool filling – you just need to specify your preferences upon ordering.
Stomach sleepers can adjust the loft and thickness according to their specific preferences and whether they use the PlushBeds Natural Wool pillow as a regular pillow or as a body pillow.
Sleep posture is incredibly important for stomach sleepers and if you’re a stomach sleeper who is transitioning into either a back or side sleeper, an adjustable pillow can help rectify your sleep habits. Side sleepers need a soft pillow whereas strict back sleepers need something firmer. The PlushBeds Handmade Natural Wool pillow is currently the best adjustable pillow in our book no matter whether you need a thick pillow or a thinner pillow.
If you suffer from neck pain while stomach sleeping, you might want to try and transition to combination sleeping. Combination sleepers switch from different (or all) sleeping positions. This helps provide more pressure relief from the main pressure points by switching things up.
Construction
The pillow cover of the PlushBeds Handmade Natural Wool pillow is removable and machine-washable but the wool filling should not be washed. Wool also helps absorb moisture, making the Natural Wool pillow a good choice for those who suffer from night sweats.
We did not experience any off-gassing with the PlushBeds Handmade Natural Wool pillow but wool (especially pure, untreated virgin wool) does have a very distinct wooly, slightly animalic scent. We found that this not go away immediately so this might be something to keep in mind if you are sensitive to scents and smells.

Our experience with Amerisleep
Those who sleep hot not only need a cooling mattress but a cooling pillow too. Sleeping hot is the number one issue for those who experience sleep difficulties. While the main culprit is usually a foam mattress that retains heat (looking at you, memory foam), foam pillows can also hold onto and give off heat.
The Amerisleep Comfort Classic pillow is also made from the same open-celled, Bio-Pur material that their mattresses are made out of. The open cell design allows for continuous and greater air flow, letting heat escape. Stomach sleepers also tend to sleep hot due to their preferred sleep position wherein most of the body lies on the mattress.
The open-cell design also helps keep the foam pliable and more responsive. Acting as a memory foam alternative, Bio-Pur offers the same pressure relief without the sink-in feel. When it comes to stomach sleepers, this allows them not to sink in too deep into the pillow, giving them respite from unnecessary neck pain.
Comfort
The Comfort Classic pillow is 6 inches deep (more commonly referred to as the pillow’s loft) and gives just the right amount of elevation and support to any type of sleeping position – whether stomach, back or side sleepers.
We did find though that it may not be the right pillow for those who prefer a thicker, loftier pillow and may not do so well as a body pillow.
Construction
Featuring the same beehive design as their mattress covers, the pillow covers on the Amerisleep Comfort Classic pillow is soft and breathable. The beehive design also allows for even more air flow. The pillow cover is also zippable and can be machine washed.
Made entirely in the USA, the Amerisleep pillow is CertiPUR-US certified. This means that it is free from any harmful toxins, chemicals and fillers that could be detrimental to both a person’s health and to the environment.
We experienced a slight, new mattress smell when we first unboxed the Comfort Classic pillow – something quite similar to their mattresses but this disappeared within a few days of use.

Warranty
Amerisleep does not offer a sleep trial for their pillow but the Comfort Classic pillow does come backed by a 10 year warranty. Should you experience any factory defects such as uneven seams, low lofts, foam issues or an irregular shaped pillow, Amerisleep is happy to exchange the item free of charge.

#4. Tuft & Needle Down Alternative Pillow
Check Current Price | Best Luxury Pillow | Review
Pros
- Good for those who suffer from allergies
- Feels like real down
- No ducky smell
Cons
- Can be a bit too pricey
- Can be a bit too thick for some
Our experience with Tuft and Needle
Stay at any high-end hotel around the world and we can guarantee that you will be laying your head on a down-filled pillow. Down or eiderdown can come from ducks or geese specially bred for well, filling up a pillow. Exceptionally soft and quite malleable, down is very much coveted when it comes to all things luxurious which of course, includes bedding.
In the recent times, the down industry has resorted to a more humane way of harvesting eiderdown but if you are someone who follows an animal product-free lifestyle, are allergic to animal by-products or just want the same cloud-like feel without the earthy, ducky scent (yes, real down pillows come with a very distinct scent), then down alternative pillows are your best bet.
Comfort
Tuft & Needle’s Down Alternative pillow is filled with a synthetic, polyester fill that’s created to feel exactly like real down pillows. Certified by the Standard 100 OKEO-TEX, the fill used in Tuft & Needle pillows are hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for those who suffer from animal allergies or seasonal allergies.
Less dense than foam, Tuft & Needle’s Down Alternative pillow offers a plush, ultra soft feel, offering greater pressure relief to those who need it. We do recommend having both a soft pillow for stomach sleepers as well as a firmer one, just so you could alternate between firmnesses, depending on what you need for the night to be able to get a more restful sleep.
You may also use the Down Alternative pillow underneath your legs for soft support for stomach and back sleepers. This pillow is also great for side sleepers, especially if you are a combination sleeper who suffers from shoulder pain. Stomach sleepers tend to sleep on their faces and a soft pillow can help avoid strained or stiff necks.
Construction
The entire pillow is also malleable, just like real down pillows, and you can adjust the loft to your preferred height. Those with heavier heads may want a higher loft, while those with smaller, lighter heads may want a lower one. Again, it all depends on your needs and preferences. An ultra slim sleeper who prefers a stomach sleeping style might find that a plush pillow would be the best pillow for both comfort and support.
While real down can trap heat, Tuft & Needle’s Down Alternative synthetic fill helps keep the pillow cool, making it the perfect pillow for stomach sleepers who are also hot sleepers.
Covered in a white, soft shell that’s non-removable, the entire pillow can still be machine-washed which is great for those who share their bed with their kids.
We did not experience any sort of off-gassing with the Tuft & Needle Down Alternative pillow. All of Tuft & Needle’s bedding products are made entirely in the USA.

Warranty
One of the few companies to offer a sleep trial for all their bedding, including mattresses, Tuft & Needle’s 100-night sleep trial extends to their pillows as well. The Down Alternative pillow comes backed by a 2 year limited warranty.

#5. Layla Kapok Pillow
Check Current Price | Best Pain Relieving Pillow
Pros:
- Adjustable loft
- More breathable than cotton
- Pain and pressure-relieving
Cons
- May not be too responsive for some
- Slight off-gassing
Our experience with Layla
A silky fiber coming from the kapok tree, kapok is also known as Java cotton. Used for centuries in Asia as an alternative to cotton, kapok is used as an all-natural filling for pillows, upholstery and cushions.
Like cotton, kapok is breathable, soft and can actually repel moisture better than cotton due to its silkier, smoother, airier texture. Kapok suffered a decline in use and popularity with the advent of synthetic foam but recently, kapok has had a revival, especially in the all-natural, organic circles.
The Layla Kapok pillow’s construction features a mix of copper-infused, open-celled memory foam and 100% natural kapok, giving the pillow a plush, more pressure-relieving feel. Copper-infused memory foam also does not retain heat like a traditional memory foam pillow does, making the Layla Kapok pillow an excellent choice for hot sleepers.
Comfort
The Layla Kapok pillow cradles the head and neck without too much sinkage, making it a good choice for all sleeper types including side and back sleepers, as well as stomach sleepers. Kapok also offers a longer lasting loft so while the shredded memory foam fill cradles, the kapok supports. We also found the pillow to be a good choice for those who suffer from sleep apnea.
The best pillows for stomach sleepers are the ones that allow them to sleep in a neutral position and we found that the Layla pillow offered us just that, even for those on our team who are very strict stomach sleepers.
Construction
The Layla pillow features the same breathable cover as their mattresses, down to the hexagonal design. It is zippable and machine-washable. What’s more is that the Layla pillow comes a bit overstuffed and features a high loft but Layla gives you the option to adjust the loft to your desired height. All you have to do is to simply remove some of the stuffing. We certainly do appreciate an adjustable pillow, especially if one suffers from chronic neck pain.
We have tried a lot of memory foam pillows, but the Layla pillow definitely is one of the contenders as the best memory foam pillow for stomach sleepers that we have tried.
We did experience slight off-gassing with the Layla pillow but this was easily remedied by airing out the pillow a day before use. All of Layla’s products, including their pillows, are made in the USA.
Sizes
- Queen
- King
Warranty
Layla does not exactly offer a sleep trial for their pillows but they do come with a 120-night money back guarantee that can essentially work as a sleep trial. The Kapok pillow comes backed by a 5 year warranty.

What stomach sleepers should know about pillows
Stomach sleeper pillows can come in any shape or form, it all depends on a person’s height, weight and personal preferences.
Stomach and back sleepers need firmer mattresses but when it comes to pillows, they need something a little closer to medium in firmness and feel. Stomach sleepers, in particular, need a slightly softer pillow due to the fact that they mostly sleep face down. Sleeping on a firm surface flat on your face can not only cause problems for the visage but also to the neck and spine alignment.
Weight does come into play when it comes to pillow shopping for stomach sleepers. The same rule applies as that with mattresses. The heavier a person is, the softer a pillow may feel so this is something to take important note of.
Stomach sleepers are also the ones who would experience the most heat when sleeping, simply because their body covers a bigger surface of both the mattress and the pillow. Cooling mattresses and cooling pillows would be a good choice for stomach sleepers who sleep hot.
There is no one size fits all proper pillow for stomach sleepers and if someone who’s trying to sell you a one tells you that, walk the other way – fast.
FAQs
In our experience, a pillow that provides adjustable firmness and is also a low loft pillow is best for stomach sleepers.
It depends on how they use the pillow, whether as a regular pillow or as a body pillow. If used as a regular pillow, stomach sleepers need a pillow that has a medium to medium firmness and something with not too much loft since they sleep with their face down. When used as a body pillow, most sleeper types, including stomach sleepers, need a softer pillow, which can contour to the body and not add any pressure on the main pressure points.
