Nectar’s sister company, Dreamcloud, is on today’s fiberglass radar. We’ve already discussed Nectar mattresses and how unsafe they are due to the seriousness of problems they caused to dozens of households. But is the mattress safe? Does Dreamcloud mattress have fiberglass? Let’s see.
Does Dreamcloud Mattress Have Fiberglass?
Dreamcloud mattresses do NOT contain fiberglass.
This includes the Dreamcloud, Dreamcloud Premier Hybrid, and Dreamcloud Premier Rest. Fiberglass is a very dangerous material but it’s commonly found in cheaper mattresses but’s it’s not present in Dreamcloud.
What are Dreamcloud mattresses made of?
Dreamcloud mattresses are very tall and most of their height comes from individually wrapped pocketed coils and foam foundation which the support layer consists of. On top of the coil system are the foam layers, one of which is a gel-infused memory foam layer that is supposed to help you sleep cool.
Finally, the cover is made of a cashmere-polyester blend and memory foam which is quilted into it. It has good edge support and relieves pressure points. Each of their models has several layers and a pillow top.
DreamCloud mattresses are made in a variety of different locations including Asia and Latin America.
What Type of Fire Retardant Does Dreamcloud Use?
We don’t know and I couldn’t get a straight answer either from Dreamcloud customer support or Resident, their parent company. When I asked what they used as a flame retardant, this was their beat-around-the-bush answer:
In previous models, the fire-retardant sock on some of our mattresses could contain silica or continuous filament glass fiber infused or woven into the fabric to meet US flammability requirements that protect consumers; our current models use a fire sock produced with other fire-retardant materials. All of these materials are recognized by the Consumer Product Safety Commission to protect from fire hazards without the use of potentially harmful chemicals.
When I asked them to explain what those “other fire-retardant materials” were, I didn’t receive an answer.
So, apparently, it’s not fiberglass, but, lucky us, it’s something else. I don’t want to bash them too much because I know that some manufacturers supply materials from several factories, and while all materials have to meet safety and flammability requirements, each factory could be using slightly different materials to meet the same standards.
This is why it would be challenging to give a simple answer when someone asks “Does my Dreamcloud mattress have fiberglass?” Still, they could have told me what I just told you, but they didn’t.
Are Dreamcloud Mattresses Toxic?
Not really.
Each Dreamcloud mattress is made with memory foam which earned CertiPUR-US® certification. This means there’s a long list of harmful chemicals that are not allowed to be used in the manufacturing process. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) should be low, which means there’s little off-gassing.
New mattresses typically off-gas for a couple of weeks while the materials are new.
With this regard, the Dreamcloud mattress is not toxic.
The bad news is that recent research shows that even after six months, VOCs keep getting released and that body heat and movement increase their release from foam. This means that your mattress releases chemicals the most while you’re sleeping in it. Also, long-term exposure to even “safe” VOCs seems to be connected to cancer.
However, since the harm from foam in mattresses isn’t immediate and can’t be measured with certainty, we still consider artificial foam mattresses safe.
Still, many people are so done with using toxic things in their everyday life that there’s an increasing demand for organic and natural mattresses that use all sorts of natural materials — natural latex foam instead of memory foam for pressure relief, organic cotton instead of polyester, etc.
Risks of Fiberglass in Mattresses
A fiberglass sock encasing the mattress materials is something like a time bomb. It may not get ruptured and start leaking right away, but it might as well happen after a couple of years. Worse yet, if you were to remove the mattress cover, you’d release a huge cloud of fiberglass particles into the air.
The main health risks of a fiberglass leak include:
- Skin irritation, rashes
- Eye redness and irritation
- Sore throat
- Nose irritation
- Respiratory problems — coughing, wheezing
- Lung scarring
People may feel these exact same symptoms as a result of other toxic chemicals in their mattresses. Additional toxic mattress symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, and sleepiness. It’s particularly scary to think about getting children and babies exposed to such chemicals and injury.
Additional risks of fiberglass
- Fiberglass contamination of the entire home
- Loss of property due to fiberglass (clothes, furniture, toys)
- Loss of working hours
- Direct financial losses (medical bills, hotel accommodation)
Fiberglass particles are similar to dust. They are tiny, airborne, and can end up anywhere, even in the HVAC system. People who had the misfortune to end up with these problems know just how hard it is to get rid of these minute shards of glass from clothes, carpets, and furniture.
Why Some Brands Put Fiberglass in Their Mattresses
Simply put, fiberglass is cheap. Many brands keep their production costs low by adding fiberglass as the flame retardant.
A fiberglass fire barrier is an inexpensive way to include a fire retardant and comply with the American Consumer Product Safety Commission-mandated laws.
Fiberglass is being banned from a rising number of states since the damage it caused to people was calculated to be tens of thousands of dollars. Still, fiberglass mattresses are being sold in large numbers because of their affordable prices.
How can you know if a mattress contains fiberglass?
If you want to know whether your mattress contains fiberglass, you should ask the manufacturer or check the label on the mattress. If there’s a zipper and a “Do Not Remove” tag, it’s likely to have a fiberglass flame-retardant sock. If the mattress tag contains words like glass fiber, glass wool, fiberglass, or silica then it contains fiberglass.
Actually, silica may or may not denote fiberglass because some types of silica act just like regular threads and are completely safe, while others can break into small shards and leak out.
Which mattress brands make mattresses that contain fiberglass?
Some of the mattress brands whose mattresses contain fiberglass beneath the mattress case are:
- Ashley Furniture
- Zinus
- Nectar
- Lucid
- Linenspa
- Vibe
- AmazonBasics
- PrimaSleep
- Olee Sleep
- Molblly
- Sleep Innovations
Some of these mattresses became more notorious than others for fiberglass leaks. The reasons are many.
They might have been more popular and therefore more fiberglass instances were reported, they might have had a zipper that invited people to remove the cover when it was time for washing, or they were just so poorly made that many of their mattresses had fiberglass spike through the mattress cover.
As a result, there are now several lawsuits being prepared due to tens of thousands of dollars in lost property. Vibe lawsuit is being prepared, as well as the Ashley Furniture lawsuit. Nectar is one of the most well-known brands which got sued, but not yet for fiberglass.
Finally, many of the mattresses from this list are too cheap to be any good, anyway. We already warned people about getting a cheap mattress on Amazon and why it’s a dumb idea. Fiberglass is one of those reasons.
Which mattress brands are fiberglass-free?
On the other hand, there are lots of mattress brands that make safe, fiberglass-free mattresses. Some of them are:
You can always contact mattress companies and ask whether they use fiberglass or not. Some of them are going to be shady about it, whereas others will proudly disclose all information on their website. In general, high-end brands like Tuft and Needle don’t contain fiberglass.
If you notice something fishy in their response, regardless of whether it’s paired with a cheap or expensive mattress, it might be safer to start looking elsewhere. After all, there’s a lot that you’re risking.
FAQs
No. Dreamcloud mattresses are made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam, which is a certification that can be granted to any mattress brand if the foam they’re producing meets certain standards, such as – no formaldehyde, low VOCs, no mercury, lead, and harmful chemical flame retardants, such as PBDEs or TCEP, TDBPP, TDCPP or TEPA.
They are quite safe. Since they contain artificial foam, there is some off-gassing from a new mattress although it’s quite slight, especially compared to all-foam mattresses (Dreamcloud makes hybrid mattresses). People who are extremely sensitive to artificial materials might feel some discomfort due to this smell.
Dreamcloud is a real, legit company, and they have thousands of satisfied customers, but also unsatisfied ones who mainly complain about it being too firm for their taste, the customer support not being helpful, or the mattress sagging after a few months of use. Dreamcloud is owned by Resident, the parent company which also owns the Nectar mattress brand. They were all involved in a lawsuit regarding false advertising because the mattresses were sold as a “Made in the US” product when in reality, they weren’t.
No, they do not contain latex. Every Dreamcloud mattress contains only its proprietary foam layers (basically memory foam) and/or pocketed coils. This means that the support coils of their coil system are all individually wrapped coils, which makes them more durable, solves the squeakiness problem, and prevents motion transfer.
Conclusion
Your Dreamcloud mattress probably doesn’t contain fiberglass beneath the cover unless it’s one of the old models.
Instead of a flame-retardant sock, they use a sock of different materials that remain undisclosed. We don’t know whether those materials contain flame-retardant toxic chemicals or not. The only natural material in a Dreamcloud mattress is cashmere, but it’s blended with polyester, so Dreamcloud mattresses are not a good choice for people who look for natural options.
There’s a long list of brands that use fiberglass as a fire retardant. Most of them are cheap and made of foam. High-end mattresses typically don’t contain fiberglass, but you should still perform a check prior to purchase. There are some major health symptoms and huge financial (and housing) issues that people had to deal with after experiencing a fiberglass leak.
Next step: Read our guide to mattresses without memory foam. Low-end memory foam mattresses are the most likely to contain fiberglass, so if you’re worried then you should get a foam-free brand. We list the pros and cons of each brands so you can decide for yourself which option is best for you.
