Our experience with Casper Original
The Casper Original is Casper’s flagship mattress and holds the title as the first ever mattress in the world to come shipped in a box. Initially seen as somewhat of a novelty, with some people thinking that mattresses that come compressed do not have the same quality as mattresses in store, the original Casper mattress changed the way people think – and shop.
Featuring Casper’s patented 4D sleep technology, the Casper Original comes in both an all foam version and a hybrid version, offering sleepers further options based on their sleeping position, weight and personal preferences. It is also Casper’s most popular and bestselling mattress.
Who should buy the Casper Original?
- All sleeper types, including strict side sleepers
- Couples
- Those who prefer mattresses on the softer side of the spectrum
- Average weight sleepers
Firmness
The Original Casper mattress (both the all foam and the hybrid) sits squarely in the middle of the soft to firm mattress scale, making it a solid 5. This is a mattress that feels like a medium that hovers very close to a medium soft. Because pressure and gravity comes into play with mattress firmness, body weight does come into play when it comes to mattress firmness.
Heavier individuals may find that the Casper Original can be a bit on the softer side. Those who are more petite or of average weight will find this mattress to feel like a true medium – not too firm, not too soft. This makes it a great choice for all types of sleepers, even those who sleep strictly on their backs and sides. This also makes it a good option for those who share a bed with a partner, even if you have different sleeping positions.
That said, some verified reviews have stated that strict stomach sleepers who are a bit on the heavier side found that their hips sunk in a little, which in the long run, could cause issues with spinal alignment so this is something to bear in mind. But if you’re like me – a 61kg stomach sleeper – then I must say that I felt my hips felt well supported.
The only difference in firmness between the all-foam version and the hybrid version of the Casper Original is that the hybrid felt bouncier and was a bit more responsive. Choosing between an all foam mattress and a hybrid mattress is truly a matter of personal preference and personal sleeping needs.
We did find that the all foam mattress provided slightly better motion isolation, although that’s not to say that the hybrid Casper Original fared badly – it was good compared to the all foam’s very good. The hybrid however, scored more points when it came to edge support.
Construction
The all foam Casper Original mattress features only 3 layers of foam that are all CertiPUR-US certified. The top layer is made up of Casper’s own Airscape foam, a breathable polyurethane foam that’s aerated to keep the mattress cool and breathable. The second layer is made up of zoned memory foam that’ slightly firmer in the middle, providing extra support to the back and hips. While you can’t really feel the zoned support system right off the bat, those who have had the Casper mattress for a long time have stated that they did feel a difference in the long term. Beneath the memory foam layer is the base layer made up of a denser and thicker slab of polyurethane foam that is engineered to prevent sagging while supporting the whole body.
All the foam materials used in the original Casper mattress are made without any harmful chemicals or VOCs. There could be a slight new mattress smell when you first get your Casper mattress but this can be easily remedied by airing it out in a well ventilated room for a day or two.
The all foam Casper Original feels unlike traditional memory foam mattresses. Upon trying it out, I felt none of that ‘stuck in the mud’ sensation that sometimes come with a true memory foam mattress. Some people prefer being cuddled by their bed however, and if you prefer a true memory foam feel of an all foam bed, we suggest something like a Tempur-Pedic.
The only difference in the hybrid version is the addition of pocketed coils encased in a fabric that allows air to flow through freely. The springs add extra support as well as lift and added bounce. We always recommend hybrid mattresses for those who weigh over 250 lbs as this would give them the support that they need.
All these layers come encased in a cotton cover that’s removable and machine washable, making it easier for you to keep your mattress clean and fresh. In addition, we also always recommend that you use a mattress protector for any new mattress you purchase. This helps massively in the longevity and durability of your mattress.
Sizes
The Casper Original mattress comes in 6 different sizes, including a California King. It measures 11″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and bases.

Pros and cons

Great for those who suffer from back pain | Not entirely all natural |

Our experience with Wave Hybrid
Young and old alike are not immune to back pain – whether chronic or temporary. Whatever the cause, it is important to pay attention to where you lay your head (and your back, of course).
The Wave Hybrid mattress is one of Casper’s newest and most high tech addition to their mattress lineup. Specifically made to help with spine alignment, the Wave Hybrid combines memory foam, latex foam and pocketed coils to create a bed that’s responsive, supportive and cuddly all at the same time.
Who should buy the Wave Hybrid?
- Those who suffer from back pain
- All sleeper types
- Couples
- Hot sleepers
Firmness
The Casper Wave Hybrid is of a medium to medium firm feel and sits on a 5-7 on the mattress scale. This makes it a great option for all types of sleepers, including those weigh heavier than average. Those who weigh well over 250 lbs though may find that this mattress might be a little bit on the softer side as weight and pressure alters how a mattress feels for each individual.
A medium to medium-firm mattress suits all types of sleeping positions including combination sleepers, making it a solid choice for couples. Casper mattresses are mostly of a medium to medium-firm feel to accommodate every type of sleeping position and body weight. Back and stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to be able to get the support and relief that they would need.
Just like most innerspring mattresses though, the Wave Hybrid has that added bounce because of its spring coils. This helps provide support as well as helping the mattress stay fresh and airy because air is able to flow freely throughout. Although not the coolest bed we’ve ever tried, the Casper Wave did help us sleep fairly cool by regulating body temperature. For a more cooling mattress, Casper does give you the option to upgrade to the Snow Hybrid, which features more advanced cooling tech such as 50% more cooling gel beads and Casper’s proprietary Heat Delete bands.
The edge support on the Wave Hybrid was excellent, especially for someone like me who likes to sleep hanging off the edge of the bed. As for motion transfer, we found that this mattress did keep motion at bay, although not as good as all-foam mattresses. If you prefer an all foam mattress with somewhat of a springy feel, you can look into a bed like the Comfy mattress.
Construction
This Casper hybrid mattress is made up of 5 layers, all encased in a sustainable and environmentally friendly mattress cover that is made out of up to 121 recycled plastic bottles per mattress. This gives it plus points for those who try to live a more sustainable lifestyle but if you prefer a mattress that is fully and completely organic, you might like to look into mattresses such as the Avocado Green.
The top layer of the Wave Hybrid is made up of polyurethane foam that’s perforated to make it breathable. It has also been coated with a phase change cooling material that helps regulate body temperature by absorbing excess heat – crucial for those who tend to sleep hot or live in hotter climates.
The middle layer is made up of natural latex that is more responsive than regular memory foam. This gives added pressure relief, especially for those who are already experiencing pain. Beneath that is a layer of zoned memory foam that provides zoned support by providing firmness around the hip and back area, keeping the spine aligned at all times. All these three layers are made with perforated foam for extra aeration and breathability. The fourth layer is made up of polyurethane foam that contains gel pods that gives added pressure relief while adding even more of a cooling effect.
The base support foam is where the pocketed coil unit sits, with a layer of a denser poly foam surrounding it, creating a durable base that keeps all the layers intact and together. With all these layers, the Wave Hybrid is a slightly thicker mattress than average which is perfect for those who don’t like mattresses that are a bit too thin.
Sizes
The Casper Wave Hybrid comes in 6 different sizes and measures 13″ tall. It works with all types of bed bases and bed frames as well as an adjustable bed.

Durability
Casper offers a 100-night sleep trial for all of their mattresses. Once you decide that you like your new Casper Wave Hybrid mattress, it comes backed by a 10 year limited warranty. Casper offers free shipping as well as an add-on option of in house delivery and set up of your new mattress.
The Casper Wave Hybrid currently has a 4.6 out of 5 star rating based on 959 verified reviews.

Pros and cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Good for those who suffer fro chronic pain | Can be too soft for some |
Great for soft mattress fans | Not suitable for heavier individuals |
Good for strict side sleepers | Can be too pricey |
Our experience with Nova Hybrid
If you are part of the soft mattress fan club and prefer mattresses that would look right at home in any 5 star hotel around the world, then the Casper Nova Hybrid mattress may be for you. The plushiest out of all the Casper mattresses, it still offers zoned support as well as pressure relief for all the main pressure points in the body.
Side sleepers are the ones who would benefit the most from softer mattresses as this takes the pressure off the shoulders and hips when sleeping. The Casper Nova Hybrid is also a good mattress for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia.
Who should buy the Nova Hybrid?
- Strict side sleepers
- Those who suffer from chronic pain
- Soft mattress fans
- Combo sleepers of average weight
Firmness
All the other Casper mattresses are of either a medium to medium firm feel and the Casper Nova Hybrid is Casper’s only soft mattress, sitting at a 3-4 on the soft to firm mattress scale. As mentioned previously, softer mattresses are best for strict side sleepers of average weight – heavier sleepers, especially those who weigh over 250 lbs. – will not get the support that they need from such a soft mattress. This will throw their spinal alignment off balance which could cause issues that could eventually become long term. The same goes for strict back sleepers and stomach sleepers.
Couples could share the Nova Hybrid mattress, but only if they have similar sleeping styles and are of average weight. We have found that that the Nova Hybrid does well in terms of motion isolation but not as good as Casper’s other mattresses but this could only become an issue if you are an extremely light sleeper.
In terms of edge support, even with the softer foam in its top comfort layer, we found that the foam encasement in the Nova Hybrid’s base support foam did well in keeping the edges secure so there’s no danger of slipping off in case you find yourself sleeping on the edge of the mattress.
People who suffer from chronic pain need substantially more pressure relief that only a soft mattress can give and while the Nova Hybrid is high up there on the softness scale, if you’re someone who prefers something something extra soft, you might want to look into mattresses such as Amerisleep’s AS1.
Construction
The construction of the Casper Nova Hybrid is quite simple with only four layers making up the entirety of the mattress. But just like the Casper Wave Hybrid, you have the option to upgrade to a Hybrid Snow, which includes the addition of a Quickcool cover, cooling gel and Heat Delete bands. I don’t really see the point in upgrading to a Hybrid Snow unless you are an extremely, extremely hot sleeper but again this is just my personal opinion.
Like with all Casper mattresses, the Nova Hybrid features a top layer of proprietary Airscape foam which has perforations all throughout, allowing heat to escape and air to circulate. It also has a plush, velvety soft feel.
Beneath that is a second layer of Airscape perforated foam that’s slightly firmer and has 3 ergonomic zones to help align the spine as well as provide more support. The zones are softer around the shoulders and firmer on the areas where the back and hips lay. Another layer of proprietary foam makes up the transition layer that features 7 support zones and contoured cuts that help reinforce the supportive layer above.
Just like every Casper hybrid mattress, the Nova Hybrid’s pocketed coil unit lies within a base polyfoam that enhances the mattress’ perimeter while providing a solid and sturdy base for the mattress. The springs add bounce and support while the coils are pocketed which help in minimizing motion transfer.
All these layers come encased in a soft, breathable quilted cotton cover that provides added plushness to the bed. Quite a lot of people have said that sleeping on the Casper Nova Hybrid felt like sleeping on a cloud and upon trying out for myself, I have to say, they were not wrong.
Sizes
The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress comes in 6 different sizes and is compatible with most bed bases, frames and foundations. It measures 12″ in thickness.

Durability
As with all of Casper’s mattresses, the Nova Hybrid comes with a 100-night sleep trial that’s risk free meaning returns are free of charge. Once you do decide that it’s the right one for you, Casper backs it up with a 10 year warranty. Casper also offers the option to include in-house setup as well as a mattress removal service for your old mattress.
Based on 524 verified reviews, the Casper Nova Hybrid currently rates at 5 out of 5 stars.

Pros and cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Good for those on a budget | Can be too thin for some |
Great for a student or dorm room | Not suitable for heavier individuals |
Suitable for all sleeper types | May have a new mattress smell |
Our experience with Casper Element
A revamp of their old budget option, the Casper Element mattress now features the same proprietary foams as its more expensive counterparts. Being an all-foam mattress, the Casper Element is like a simplified version of the original Casper mattress.
Who should buy the Casper Element?
- All sleeper types
- Budget shoppers
- Students
- Those who are just starting out
Firmness
Similar to the Casper Original, the Casper Element has firmness level of 5-7, making it a medium to medium firm feel. This makes it a good option for all sleeper types except strict side sleepers who are also petite. This may feel a bit too firm for them. Heavier individuals would also need more support and we always suggest going for a hybrid mattress for those who weigh well over 250 lbs.
Both back sleepers and stomach sleepers would do well with a mattress such as the Casper Element as firmer mattresses help support their hips and back, which are the main areas that bear the brunt of their weight.
All foam beds – especially ones that are on the firmer side – are great at isolating motion and the Casper Element mattress is no different. I share a bed with a very jumpy pet and I barely felt anything when trying out the mattress.
With that said, the edge support on the Casper Element could be a bit better but I believe this is only because it is a thinner mattress, comprised of only 2 foam layers.
Construction
As mentioned previously, the Casper Element mattress is made up of only 2 foam layers – a top comfort layer and a base support foam.
The top comfort layer is made up of the same proprietary Airscape foam that Casper uses on all of its mattresses. It is perforated all throughout to allow heat and moisture to escape as well as letting air circulate all throughout. The perforations also give the mattress a more responsive feel which helps in relieving pressure.
Although the Casper Element is not an active cooling mattress, it did do a good job of allowing us to sleep more temperature neutral. If you are a hot sleeper and need a more active cooling bed, you could do well by looking into a mattress like the GhostBed Flex.
The base support layer of the Casper Element is made up of a denser, polyurethane foam that is engineered to prevent sinking and sagging while providing extra support. All of Casper’s foam layers are CertiPUR-Us certified and are made without any harmful chemicals or VOCs. There may be a slight new mattress smell upon unboxing but this could be easily remedied by airing out the mattress in a well ventilated room for a day or two. It’s similar to other mattress brands, as you can see in our Nectar vs Casper vs Purple mattress comparison.
These two layers come encased in the same soft, breathable cotton cover in Casper’s signature gray that helps wick away moisture. The mattress cover is removable and machine washable, making it easier for you to keep your mattress fresh and clean.
