Part of the reason why Ikea mattresses are so popular is that they are of good quality and come at very affordable price points. We have rounded up the best mattresses Ikea offers for this year. Our experience with the Haugesund Spring Mattress

Essentially an innerspring mattress, the Haugesund Mattress is one of Ikea’s most popular mattresses because of its simple, classic build. Unlike the innerspring mattresses of yore, there is no need for a box spring with the Haugesund Mattress. Best for back and stomach sleepers because of its medium firm feel, it can also accommodate combination sleepers of any size.

Who should buy the Haugesund Spring Mattress?

  • Those who prefer innerspring beds
  • Back and stomach sleepers as well as some combination sleepers
  • Those who prefer a more responsive bed
  • Couples
  • Hot sleepers

Firmness

The Haugesund Mattress is a medium firm mattress making it a 6-7 on the mattress firmness scale. This makes it a good choice for those who sleep predominantly on their backs or stomachs. Some combination sleepers may also find the Haugesund Mattress to be quite comfortable, as long as they do not sleep for too long on their sides. Side sleepers need softer mattresses as firm mattresses would only add to the pressure on their pressure points.

Because it is an innerspring mattress, the Haugesund Mattress is also an excellent choice for those who weigh well over 250 lbs. Heavier individuals may find though that a medium firm mattress to be a tad softer, making it feel more like a medium, so it is best to keep this mind.

Unlike memory foam beds, spring mattresses are highly responsive which means you might find the Haugesund to have a bit of bounce. This could be an issue if you share a bed with someone who moves around a lot during sleep. I share a bed with a pet and I did experience a tiny bit of cross mattress movement. If you prefer a mattress with almost zero motion transfer, you might want to look at something like Amerisleep’s AS3.

Construction

Made up almost entirely of response coils, the Haugesund Mattress also contains comfort layers of soft filling. The individually wrapped pocket springs move independently and follow the contours of your body, offering responsive support that only a spring mattress can give.

Pocketed coils also help deaden motion transfer but since Ikea’s spring mattresses inherently springy, they won’t be as great as memory foam mattresses in isolating motion.

We found the Haugesund Mattress to provide excellent edge support, which is good news for those who find themselves sleeping close to the edge of the bed. Most Ikea mattresses have pretty thick, reinforced seams, especially their innerspring and hybrid mattresses.

The comfort layers in the Haugesund Mattress is made up of polyurethane foam. The mattress also contains soft ticking consisting of a blend of cotton, polyester, viscose and rayon. All these mattress materials coupled with the individually wrapped pocket springs help keep the mattress stay cool and fresh, as springs allow for greater air flow, a problem most foam mattresses have. This makes the Haugesund Mattress a good choice for those who tend to sleep extremely hot.

The soft, quilted mattress cover comes with handles on each side for easier handling as well as to help you rotate your mattress when needed. We do recommend rotating your mattress every so often so wear will be even. No matter how good quality a mattress may be, mattress dips and sags are inevitable with time, especially if you tend to sleep on only one side. The Haugesund mattress is non-flippable and is meant to be used on one side only.

Unfortunately, the mattress cover of the Haugesund Mattress is non-removable and non-washable. This means that should you experience any spills or accidents, you have to spot clean immediately.

Since the Haugesund Mattress comes roll-packed, we found that it did take a full 72 hours to fully expand but you can definitely use the mattress right off the bat. We also found that it gave off a very slight new mattress smell but this dissipated immediately after a few hours of unpacking.

Sizes

The Haugesund Mattress comes in 4 sizes and measures 9″ in thickness. It is compatible with most types of bed frames and bases, including slatted mattress bases, which incidentally, is also one of Ikea products.

Durability

Ikea does not really offer a sleep trial for their mattresses but their return policy does run for 90 days, giving you ample time to try out the mattress to see whether you would like to return or exchange it. We found Ikea to have one of the best return policies and they act on requests pretty quickly. Depending on your location, Ikea can offer free delivery and setup. All of Ikea’s mattresses come with a 10 year limited warranty.

The Haugesund Mattress currently has a 4.5 out of 5 stars rating based on 698 verified Ikea mattress reviews.

#2. Hasvag Spring Mattress

ikea hasvag mattress
Hasvag Mattress

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Great for studentsPoor motion isolation
Good for hot sleepers
True innerspring feel

Our experience with the Hasvag Spring Mattress

Dorm living can be daunting. More often that not, universities have mattresses that have seen better days. No one wants to be sleeping on the same mattress that has been slept on by strangers for years at a time. No matter whether you live in a university funded dorm room or you opted to live off-campus in a shared student accommodation, it’s always a good idea to bring your own. The Hasvag Spring Mattress is one of Ikea’s inexpensive mattresses, making it a great choice for students and budget shoppers alike.

Who should buy the Hasvag Spring Mattress?

  • Students
  • Budget shoppers
  • Back, stomach and combination sleepers
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those with guest rooms
  • Classic innerspring mattress fans

Firmness

The Hasvag Mattress sits on a 6-7 on the mattress firmness scale making it a medium firm mattress. Good for both back sleepers and stomach sleepers, it may feel a little too firm for strict side sleepers. Combination sleepers who switch positions often may find the Hasvag Mattress to also be comfortable. If you are a strict side sleeper and need an affordable mattress, you may want to look at something like Sweet Night mattresses.

A true innerspring mattress, the Hasvag Mattress is quite responsive and very springy which might not be a good idea if you share a bed with a partner or a pet. I found this out the hard way when I felt every jump that my cat did when he had the 3am zoomies. This is due to the fact that the coil system within the Hasvag Mattress does not contain individually wrapped springs. Pocket springs help deaden motion and is what you should look for if you are one half of a twosome.

Those who are on the heavier side may find that the Hasvag Mattress to be a little softer than medium firm, especially since it is a thinner type of mattress. Although it can support heavier individuals well, the Hasvag Mattress can show signs of premature sagging when slept on by someone well over 300 lbs. If you are, then this may not be the best mattress for you. We recommend something like the Bear Hybrid for really heavyset sleepers.

Construction

Like the Haugesund, the Hasvag mattress is also modeled like a classic innerspring mattress. Innerspring mattresses are made up mostly of spring coils with thin layers of comfort filling in between. The difference between hybrids and innersprings is that hybrids tend to be a mix of thicker foam (usually memory foam) and spring coils.

The Hasvag uses bonnell springs as its main coil system. Bonnell springs are usually open coils and are not individually wrapped. As we’ve previously mentioned, the Hasvag Mattress would probably not be your best choice if you share a bed and you’re a pretty light sleeper.

Bonnell springs, however, offer ample support and move along with your body making it pretty responsive. You are essentially sleeping on top of the bed rather than in it. This makes it a good choice for those who hate that sunk in feel of a foam mattress. A traditional memory foam mattress is notorious for that stuck in the mud feel, which we know quite a lot of people hate.

The comfort filling in the Hasvag Mattress is made up of a thin layer of polyurethane foam. The poly foam layer offers enough cushion so you won’t feel as though you are lying on a bed of springs. Breathable enough to let the air flow through both the coil system and the foam layer, the Hasvag Mattress is a solid choice for hot sleepers. Also, those who grew up sleeping on classic innerspring mattresses would appreciate the feel of the Hasvag Mattress.

The slightly padded mattress cover is made up of a blend of cotton and polyester stretch fabric that is thick and yet breathable enough to let air flow through. But, like the Haugesund, the Hasvag mattress cover is non-removable and non-washable. Please ensure to use a mattress protector to extend the lifespan of your new mattress.

Like most Ikea mattresses no matter the price range, the Hasvag Mattress comes with handles on each side for easier handling and rotating. We found the stitching on the handles to be quite sturdy and not flimsy at all. We find that spring mattresses offer good edge support and the Hasvag Mattress is no exception.

Rolled and vacuum-packed but not boxed, the Hasvag Mattress took a little over 24 hours to fully expand, although you can use the mattress right off the bat. Ikea does state that it could take up to 72 hours for your new mattress to reach its full size but I believe this applies to some of their thicker mattresses.

Sizes

The Hasvag Mattress comes in 3 sizes and measures 8 and a quarter inches in thickness. It is compatible with most bases and bed frames, including a slatted bed frame.

  • Full

Durability

Ikea does not offer a sleep trial period but they do have a 90 day return policy. All of Ikea’s mattresses come with a 10 year limited warranty.

The Hasvag Mattress currently features a 4 out of 5 stars based on 138 verified popular Ikea mattress reviews.

#3. Minnesund Mattress

Check Current Price | Best for Daybeds

ikea minnesund mattress
Minensund Mattress

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Great for daybeds and kids bedsNot for heavier individuals
Good for budget shoppersCan be too thin for some
Washable cover

Our experience with the Minnesund Mattress

Highly recommended for daybeds and children’s beds, the Minnesund Mattress is an all-foam mattress made up of high resilience foam. High resilience polyurethane foam mattresses tend to last long even with more than the usual daily wear.

Who should buy the Minnesund Mattress?

  • Those with young kids
  • Those who utilize daybeds and trundle beds
  • Back and stomach sleepers
  • Budget shoppers

Firmness

Falling on a 7-8 on the mattress firmness scale, the Minnesund Mattress is a firm mattress. Firm mattresses are best suited to stomach sleepers and back sleepers as this gives them better spinal alignment and support. Unfortunately, strict side sleepers and even some combination sleepers may not find the Minnesund Mattress to be comfortable enough as the foam firmness may cause undue pressure on their hips and shoulders. If you are a strict side sleeper and still want to buy an Ikea mattress, you may want to look into some of their softer mattress offering or you could opt for something from another brand like DreamCloud.

We also do not recommend the Minnesund Mattress for those weighing over 250 lbs. as an all-foam mattress would not be able to give them the support that they need, especially with a mattress like the Minnesund that is meant for a daybed or a trundle bed.

We found that high resilience foam is pretty good at deadening motion and the Minnesund Mattress did a fairly good job at lessening motion transfer.

Construction

Slightly on the thinner side of the spectrum, the Minnesund Mattress is essentially made up of one slab of poly foam. It features raised, rounded grooves that looks much like egg crates. This helps offer zoned support from head to toe. Back sleepers, especially, need localized support when it comes to spinal alignment.

Although not meant for something long term for adults, the Minnesund Mattress may be a good choice for a child’s bed but for kids 8 and up, you might need something more substantial and thicker like Yogabed Mattresses.

Since it’s a thin mattress, those who sleep hot would not feel as though they are being swallowed up by the bed. The high resilience foam helps with this too. For such a thin mattress, edge support is a little compromised but raised sides usually come with children’s bed frames.

The Minnesund Mattress also features a removable and washable cover, making it easier to clean should spills or accidents happen – a very crucial feature indeed for those with children. Please bear in mind that dry cleaning the mattress cover of the Minnesund Mattress is not recommended.

Like with all of Ikea’s other mattresses, the Minnesund comes rolled and vacuum-packed. We did find that it gave off a slightly strong new mattress smell but this is normal for most foam mattresses. Airing out the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a day or two usually solves the issue.

Sizes

The Minnesund Mattress comes in 3 sizes and measures 3 and 3 quarters in thickness.

  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen

Durability

In line with Ikea’s return policies, you have 90 days to find out whether you want to return or exchange your mattress. The Minnesund Mattress comes backed by a 10 year limited warranty.

It currently has a rating of 3 and half stars out of 5 based on 156 verified Ikea mattress reviews.

#4. Morgedal Mattress

ikea morgedal mattress
Morgedal Mattress

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Great for couplesNot suitable for heavier individuals
Suitable for all sleeper typesCan be a bit too firm for some
Firmness options

Our experience with the Morgedal Mattress

An Ikea foam mattress is one of Ikea’s bestselling mattress types and the Morgedal Foam Mattress is probably their number one bestselling all-foam mattress. This is partly because you are given the choice to choose between two firmness options making the Morgedal Mattress a good choice for all sleeper types.

Who should buy the Morgedal Foam Mattress?

  • Those who prefer all-foam beds
  • Couples
  • Budget shoppers
  • All sleeper types, including combination sleepers

Firmness

As we’ve mentioned, Ikea offers the option to choose between two firmness options: between a Firm and a Medium-Firm. We did find that the Medium Firm is a bit of a misnomer as it felt more like a Medium to us, meaning it falls on a 5.5 on the mattress firmness scale. The Firm does fall on on a 7-8. This makes the Morgedal Foam Mattress a solid choice for all sleeper types, even side sleepers.

Once more, we have to reiterate that all-foam beds are really not a good option for those who are heavier set since they need extra support. Hybrid mattresses or innerspring beds offer heavier individuals the support and comfort that they would need. What’s more is that the heavier you are, the softer a mattress feels and vice versa, so it is best to keep this in mind when shopping for a new bed. You can use a mattress topper should you need one.

Made up of high resilience polyurethane foam, we found that the Morgedal Mattress offered us great motion isolation when sharing the bed with a partner or a pet. Most foam mattresses (but especially a memory foam mattress) are good at absorbing any type of movement as opposed to spring mattresses.

Construction

The Morgedal Matttress is made up of two big chunks of different types of polyurethane foam. The first foam layer is made up of high resilience poly foam that is both responsive and supportive. Unlike memory foam, which allows sleepers to lay cuddled within the mattress, high resilience poly foam acts like a blend of foam and latex, allowing sleepers to lay on top of the mattress rather than in it. This is something to take note of, especially if you tend to sleep quite hot.

The second and base layer of the Morgedal is made up of high density polyfoam that acts both as extra support and base. While the mattress can support a good amount of weight because of its heavy duty base layer, heavyweight sleepers still may not get the proper support and spinal alignement that they would need.

We also found that the Morgedal’s firmer option offered better edge support than its Medium Firm mattress option. If you are the type to sleep closer to the edge of the bed, it would be best to go with the Firm option.

The mattress cover in the Morgedal Mattress is removable in two parts and the top part is machine-washable.

We also found the Morgedal Mattress to give slight off-gassing upon first unrolling but this dissipated within a couple of hours. As with all of Ikea’s other roll-packed mattresses, they recommend to wait up to 72 hours for the mattress to expand to its full size even though you can use the mattress immediately after unpacking.

Sizes

The Morgedal Mattress comes in 4 sizes and measures 8 inches in thickness. It is best used with a slatted bed base or mattress base.

  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King

Durability

In lieu of a sleep trial period, Ikea has a 90 day return or exchange policy for all of their mattresses. The Morgedal Mattress comes backed by a 10 year limited warranty.

Based on 417 verified mattress reviews, the Morgedal Mattress currently has a 4 out of 5 stars rating and is one of Ikea’s top sellers.

#5. Meistervik Mattress

Check Current Price | Best for Kids

ikea meistervik mattress
Meistervik Mattress

Pros and cons

ProsCons
Great for kidsCan be a bit too thin for some
Can be used in daybedsNot for heavier individuals
Good for stomach and back sleepers

Our experience with the Meistervik Foam Mattress

Choosing a mattress for your child’s bed shouldn’t be hard and Ikea has plenty of kids’ mattresses to choose from. They also offer mattresses for cribs and cots. The Meistervik Foam Mattress can be used for either a kid’s bed, a trundle bed extension or a daybed.

Who should buy the Meistervik Mattress?

  • Those with kids
  • Those who utilize daybeds
  • Those with trundle beds
  • Back and stomach sleepers

Firmness

The Meistervik Mattress is a Firm mattress and it falls on a 7-8 on the mattress firmness scale. This makes it a good option for those who sleep only on their backs or stomachs. Strict side sleepers and even combination sleepers who sleep predominantly on their sides would find the Meistervik to be a bit too firm. However, kids are pretty lightweight and sleeping on the Meistervik won’t be too much of an issue for smaller children.

When used in daybeds or trundle beds, we found that a small nap didn’t pose too much of an issue for adult side sleepers.

The Meistervik Foam Mattress is not recommended for regular use by heavyweight adults or two people.

Construction

Although thinner than a regular mattress, the Meistervik Foam Mattress features 2 layers of polyurethane foam. The top layer has a grooved underbelly that offers zoned support while the base layer helps with extra support and spinal alignment.

Children grow at a rapid rate and a bed that supports that growth is an important factor to consider. The Meistervik Foam Mattress can be used by children from 2-8 years old.

A removable and washable cover is imperative when it comes to childrens’ beds and the Meistervik’s mattress cover is both removable and washable.

We did not experience any off-gassing with the Meistervik Mattress although it did take a full 72 hours to expand to its full size.

Sizes

The Meistervik Mattress comes in 3 sizes and measures 4 and three quarters in thickness.

  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen

Durability

As with all of Ikea’s mattresses, the Mesitervik Mattress comes with a 10 year limited warranty. They also offer 90 days for you to decide whether to return or exchange it.

The Meistervik Mattress currently features a 4 out of 5 stars rating based on 131 verified Ikea mattress reviews.

Things to consider when choosing an Ikea Mattress

Just like when buying mattresses from other brands or retailers, you have to consider the following factors:

  • Mattress type preference – You may have gotten used to a certain mattress type since childhood and do not want to delve from what you know and love. That’s ok. Ikea offers all types of mattresses from innerspring mattresses (which they call spring mattresses), latex mattresses, foam mattresses (including memory foam) and hybrid mattresses. They also offer sofa beds, futons and cribs.
  • Sleeping style – Ikea beds come in different firmness levels. It is important to note your preferred sleeping position before buying a new mattress. The general rule of thumb is side sleepers and combination sleepers do well with soft to medium mattresses while stomach and back sleepers are recommended to opt for medium firm to firmer mattresses. Like your mattress but feel that you want something just a touch firmer or softer? Ikea offers mattress toppers to go with their mattresses.
  • Medical conditions – This may not apply to everyone but if you do have a medical condition then choosing the right mattress could be even more crucial. Issues like chronic back pain or fibromyalgia can often be exacerbated by sleeping on the wrong mattress type or firmness level.
  • Whether or not you share a bed – Sharing a bed with a partner and a pet is another important factor for consideration when purchasing a mattress, especially if you are a light sleeper. Motion transfer can be a problem when you choose a mattress that does nothing in terms of motion isolation. Also, you and your partner may have different sleeping styles and a compromise may need to be made when it comes to mattress firmness. Ikea actually suggests buying twin beds (which when joined together makes a King size mattress) with firmness levels that corresponds to your and your partner’s individual needs.
  • Bed size – Ikea mattresses come in standard mattress sizes found around the world. While most of us know the size of our existing beds, it is always best to double check the dimensions. This saves you time and money.

Why Ikea?

Why indeed? While a lot of people are quick to judge the quality of some of Ikea’s flat-pack furniture – let’s face it, nothing really beats custom-made – we have to admit that their mattresses, as well as a lot of other bedding products they offer, are on par with some of the more popular mattress brands out there. Not only that, their customer service is swift, efficient and courteous. They have uniformed processes in place for returns, exchanges, refunds and complaints – no matter where you are in the world. You can expect the same service whether you’re in Dubai or London or Las Vegas (I can confirm this as firsthand fact). As a company, Ikea is a well-oiled machine.

Shopping online or in-store at Ikea is easy and convenient. You have a wide breadth of choices when it comes to practically anything you may need for your home or office.

These days, time is a commodity not all of us have. Shopping for the right mattress should be the least of your worries.
