Our experience with Sweetnight Prime

Sure, there’s a lot of mattress brands out there that offer customizable firmness levels but ever heard of a mattress that has 4 firmness levels within one mattress?

The Sweetnight Prime mattress has all the firmness levels that’s suitable for every sleeping position under the sun – all within one mattress. How is this possible, you might ask? Well, the Sweetnight Prime mattress is flippable and there are two firmness levels on each side.

Another thing we like about the Sweetnight Prime mattress is that it offers the same body contouring pressure relief as true memory foam but without any of sinkage.

Who should buy the Sweetnight Prime

  • All slepper types
  • Couples
  • Those who prefer a true memory foam feel without the sinkage
  • Those who suffer from back pain and/or chronic pain such as fibromyalgia

Firmness

checking firmness of sweet night prime mattress

As we’ve mentioned (a couple of times now), the Sweetnight Prime mattress has four firmness levels, two on either side. A soft and medium-soft on one side and a medium and medium-firm on the other – all you need to do is to flip the mattress to get your chosen mattress firmness level.

Strict side sleepers and combination sleepers who sleep mostly on their sides would do well on the softer side while back and stomach sleepers would fare better on the firmer side.

Unfortunately, because the Sweetnight Prime is an all-foam mattress, it may not be able to provide enough support for those who weigh well over 300 lbs.

Another perk of having multiple firmness options within one bed is that it would suit those who share a bed with a partner, no matter whether they have the same sleep position preferences or not.

Speaking of sharing a bed, we found the Sweetnight Prime mattress to have excellent motion isolation when we tried the mattress out with a partner.

What we didn’t really like though is that the Sweetnight Prime mattress’ edge support leaves much to be desired so if you are the type of sleeper who likes to sleep closer to the edge of the bed, then this mattress might not be the one for you.

Construction

Sweet Night Prime mattress construction

There are 4 foam layers within the Sweetnight Prime mattress. All these layers come encased in an anti-pilling, breathable cotton mattress cover that’s OEKO-TEX certified. The mattress cover also features a modern checkered design that would suit any bedroom’s decor.

The first comfort layer on the Sweetnight Prime mattress is made up memory foam that’s infused with cooling gel that not only helps you sleep cool but offers maximum pressure support that only memory foam can give.

If you’re thinking that the Sweetnight Prime’s memory foam layer will make you feel as though you are stuck in the mud, you can stop right there – we did not feel any of the sinkage that’s usually associated with true memory foam beds.

The second layer is made up of a transition layer that’s made up of airflow high density foam that helps with proper spinal alignment while providing extra support.

These two layers make up the softer side of the Sweetnight Prime.

On the flip and firmer side, the comfort layer is made up of the same cooling-gel infused memory foam, only firmer. Again, it provides the same contouring pressure relief as the softer side does.

The second layer is made up of high density polyfoam that supports both sides of the Prime mattress and offers even more support.

All the foam layers of the Sweetnight Prime mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.

Sizes

The Sweetnight Prime mattress comes in 4 standard mattress sizes. It comes in 2 thickness options to choose from – a 10″ and a 12″. The Sweetnight Prime mattress is compatible with most bed frames, bed bases and foundations.

#2. Nolah Original 10

Check Current Price | Best for Back Pain | Review

nolah original 10-inch mattress on wood bed frame
Nolah Original 10

Pros

  • Cooling
  • Pressure-relieving
  • Good for those who suffer from back pain
  • More responsive than traditional memory foam

Cons

  • Not suitable for heavier-set individuals
  • Can be a little too firm for some

Our experience with the Nolah Original 10

Love the contouring and conforming feel of a regular memory foam mattress but hate the inevitable sinkage? The Nolah Original 10 is an all-foam mattress that uses a proprietary memory foam alternative that provides the same cushioning as traditional memory foam but without the sinkage usually associated with traditional memory foam.

Who should buy the Nolah Original 10?

  • Those who want a memory foam mattress without that stuck in the mud feel
  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who prefer thinner mattresses
  • All sleeper types
  • Couples

Firmness

Sitting at a 5-6 on the mattress firmness scale, the Nolah Original 10 has a medium to medium firm feel, depending on body weight. Although medium feel mattresses are suitable for all sleeping positions, those who sleep strictly on their sides and weigh slightly less than average might find the Nolah Original 10 mattress to be somewhat on the firmer side. We recommend something like the Amerisleep AS5 for strict side sleepers. That said, a firmer mattress is great for helping alleviate back pain as well as providing more support to those who suffer from lumbar issues.

We found the edge support on the Nolah Original 10 to be excellent, mostly due to its all-foam construction and high-density foam base. If you are someone who likes sleeping close to the edge of the bed, then you would not be in any danger of rolling off the bed.

Most all-foam mattresses these days have virtually no motion transfer and the Nolah Original 10 is one such mattress. We did not experience any cross-mattress movement along the mattress surface when we tried it out with a partner. This makes the Nolah Original 10 a good choice for those who share a bed with a partner or a pet.

Construction

There are 4 layers to the Nolah Original 10 mattress and this includes the mattress cover. Nolah revamped their Original 10 mattress cover and it now features a snow-white Tencel cellulose fabric. Tencel has botanic origins and has been scientifically proven to be more breathable than regular cotton covers. The Nolah Original 10’s Tencel cover helps wick away both heat and moisture, making the mattress a solid choice for those who tend to sleep hot.

The comfort layer is made up of 2″ of Nolah’s proprietary memory foam alternative which they have named AirFoam. This layer provides superior pressure relief while contouring and conforming to your body’s curves like traditional memory foam does but without the heat retention that goes along with it.

The transition layer below that is made up of a deep and supportive high-resilience foam that provides a more responsive bounce to the mattress. This is also the layer that helps the Nolah Original 10 avoid that stuck in the mud feel.

The bulk of the Nolah Original mattress is made up of its base layer. The 7″ base is made up of high-density foam that gives the entire mattress its firmness while providing support. The base foam is also whats holds all the layers together, giving the mattress stability and durability.

We did not experience any instance of off-gassing when we first unboxed the Nolah Original 10 mattress. All of Nolah’s mattresses are made entirely in the USA and are CertiPUR-US-certified as well as OKEO-TEX 100-certified.

Sizes

The Nolah Original 10 mattress comes in 7 standard mattress sizes. It measures 10″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames, foundations and bed bases including an adjustable bed base.

#3. Puffy

puffy mattress on upholstered bed frame
Puffy Mattress

Pros

  • Cooling
  • True memory foam feel
  • Good for those who suffer from back and hip pain

Cons

  • Some sinkage
  • Slight off-gassing

Our experience with the Puffy mattress

Endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, the Puffy mattress provides structured support, no matter what position you sleep in. With its true memory foam feel that offers both cushioning and contouring, it’s no wonder why those who suffer from hip and back pain choose the Puffy mattress.

Who should buy the Puffy Mattress

  • Those who suffer from hip pain and back pain
  • Back, stomach and combination sleepers
  • Couples
  • Those who prefer a true memory foam feel

Firmness

The Puffy mattress is a 6-7 on the mattress firmness scale, making it a medium-firm. While this firmness is suitable for all sleeper types, petite side sleepers may find it to be a little too firm. In that case, may we suggest the Lytton mattress if your preferred sleeping position is on your side.

What makes the Puffy 10-inch memory foam mattress good for couples is that we found it to be excellent at isolating cross-mattress movement when we tried it out with a partner. If you share a bed with someone who likes to move around a lot while they sleep, then the Puffy mattress is an excellent choice.

We found edge support to be very good, although if you are a bit on the heavier side, you might find yourself sinking in if you like to sit on the edge of the bed.

Construction

There are 5 layers to the Puffy mattress and this includes both the stain-resistant top cover that’s also hypoallergenic and the grip base cover that helps the mattress stay in place. The cover is also removable and machine-washable, making it easy for you to keep your mattress clean.

The top layer is made up of Puffy’s proprietary Cooling Cloud foam – a gel-infused breathable memory foam alternative that helps relieve pressure off your main pressure points.

Below that lies the Climate Comfort foam that helps provide ample support while cradling your body just like a true memory foam mattress. This layer is also temperature-regulating, which can help you sleep a little cooler.

The transition layer is made up of a high-density Firm Core Support foam that helps provide extra support and stability to the entire mattress.

Upon unboxing, we experienced a tiny amount of off-gassing with the Puffy mattress, but this is normal when it comes to memory foam mattresses. We recommend airing out your mattress in a well-ventilated area for a day prior to first use.

Sizes

The Puffy mattress comes in 7 standard mattress sizes, including a Queen mattress. It is compatible with most bases and foundations. It’s a great mattress for a platform bed frame.

Financing

Puffy offers financing for all of their mattresses through Klarna.

Durability

The Puffy mattress comes with a 101 night sleep trial as well as lifetime warranty. Puffy mattresses ship free within the contiguous United States.

#4. Tuft & Needle Original

Check Current Price | Best for Back and Stomach Sleepers

tuft and needle original 10-inch mattress on gray bed frame
Tuft & Needle Original

Pros

  • Extra support for back and stomach sleepers
  • Cooling
  • Good for couples

Cons

  • Not suitable for strict side sleepers
  • Non-removable cover

Our experience with the Tuft & Needle Original

Made from a blend of cooling gel and heat-conducting graphite, the Tuft & Needle Original mattress is both cooling and contouring – two words you necessarily hear together when talking about memory foam.

To take it up a notch, Tuft & Needle used their own proprietary Adaptive foam, that acts and feels like memory foam, without the heat or the sinkage.

Who should buy the Tuft & Needle Original

  • Those who prefer a memory foam mattress without the sinkage
  • Hot sleepers
  • Couples
  • Back and stomach sleepers

Firmness

The Tuft & Needle Original sits on an 8 in the mattress firmness scale, making it a solid firm feel. This makes it the best choice for back and stomach sleepers. Just how much cushioning side sleepers need depend on their size and body weight but generally side sleepers need something a little more plush like Slumber Solutions which comes highly recommended.

Motion transfer was pretty non-existent with the Tuft & Needle Original but edge support was only fair when we tried it out.

Construction

Featuring a simple construction, the Tuft & Needle Original only has two layers: 3″ of Tuft & Needle’s very own Adapative foam that is open-celled and infused with both cooling gel and graphite and 6.5″ of foundation support foam that’s high-density.

Both cooling gel and graphite have been proven to draw heat away from the body and the mattress, resulting in a cooler, more comfortable sleep. The Adaptive foam acts much like memory foam in that it contours and conforms to the body, alleviating both pain and pressure. The base foam provides the most support and gives the mattress its true extra-firm feel.

The breathable cotton cover that encases the Tuft & Needle Original is non-removable so spot cleaning is recommended should any spills or accidents happen.

All of Tuft & Needle’s mattresses are certified free from toxins, fiberglass and harmful chemicals and are made entirely in the USA.

Sizes

The Tuft & Needle Original comes in 6 sizes. It is compatible with all bed frames and bed bases.

#5. Leesa

Check Current Price | Best for Allergy Sufferers

leesa mattress on platform bed frame
Leesa Mattress

Pros

  • Cooling
  • Greenguard Gold UL certified
  • True memory foam feel

Cons

  • Non-removable cover
  • Can be too pricey

Our experience with the Leesa mattress

Certified by both CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold UL, the Leesa mattress is certified to the nines making it one of the safest mattresses for those who suffer from allergies or those with smaller children. The best sleep does not always come with a thicker bed.

Who should buy the Leesa Mattress

  • Those who suffer from allergies
  • Those with smaller children
  • All sleeper types

Firmness

The Leesa mattress comes in a Relaxed-Firm firmness, which is around 5-7 on the mattress firmness scale. This makes it suitable for most types of sleepers except for lightweight side sleepers.

Sleep puts pressure on the shoulders and hips of side sleepers and they would be better off sleeping on something soft like the OkiOki mattress. Also, being an all-foam 10-inch mattress, those who weigh well over 250 lbs. would not be able to get enough support hence why we always recommend a hybrid mattress for heavier individuals. Read our guide to the best mattress for a 400-pound person for more information.

We found both motion isolation and edge support to be fairly good on the Leesa mattress when we tried it out with a partner.

Construction

There are only 3 layers to the Leesa mattress and all these layers come encased in a gray cool knit cover that’s temperature regulating.

The top layer is made up of an exclusive breathable foam that helps wick away body heat while providing more responsive support.

Below lies a memory foam recovery layer that gives the Leesa mattress its pressure-relieving true memory foam feel.

The base layer is made up of a high density foam base that provides both firmness and stability to the entire mattress.

We did not experience any off-gassing with the Leesa mattress.

Sizes

The Leesa 10-inch memory foam mattress comes in 6 sizes. It is compatible with all bed frames, bases and foundations.

Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Pros

  • Active cooling
  • Flippable
  • Responsive

Cons

  • Slight off-gassing
  • Not suitable for heavier individuals

Our experience with the Layla Memory Foam mattress

Finally, a thin mattress that is flippable. That’s right, the Layla Memory Foam mattress comes in two firmness levels, making it a good option for all sleeping positions. No more arguing over sleeping arrangements.

Made with copper-infused memory foam, the Layla Memory Foam mattress is active cooling, helping draw heat away from both the body and the mattress, making it the better option for hot sleepers.

Who should buy the Layla Memory Foam mattress

  • Hot sleepers
  • Those who suffer from seasonal allergies
  • All sleeper types

Firmness

The Layla Memory Foam mattress comes in two firmness levels, a Soft and a Firm. What’s more is that these two firmness levels comes in one mattress because the Layla mattress is flippable, as all other Layla mattresses are. This makes it suitable for all sleeper types, from back sleepers to those who sleep strictly on their sides.

That said, being an all-foam mattress, the Layla Memory Foam mattress is not suitable for heavier individuals. Instead, they should opt for the Layla Hybrid mattress.

We found the Layla mattress to give excellent motion isolation as well as edge support when we tried it out.

Construction

There are 4 foam layers within the Layla Memory Foam mattress and two types of cooling covers for each side. The cooling cover in the soft side is breathable and plush while the cooling cover on the firm side activates with body temperature. The cover is also removable and machine-washable.

The soft side contains a thicker layer of copper memory foam that provides rapid cooling and variable support for deep compression areas while being soft and plush. This side is best for side sleepers and those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia. A layer of Max Support foam also lies within the soft side, providing zoned SMT for extra support.

The firm side contains a layer of firmer copper memory foam that provides both support and temperature regulation.

The support core sits within the middle of the mattress providing stability and firmness to all the layers.

We experienced a very small amount of off-gassing upon unboxing the mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.

How to decide if a 10-inch mattress is right for you

There a few variables that come into play on deciding whether a thinner mattress is right for you. We also recommend looking at the best 8-inch mattresses and best 6-inch mattresses for more thin options. Read our guide to 10-inch vs. 12-inch mattresses for the pros and cons between these two height options.

Body weight

Most 10-inch mattresses do not come with a coil unit hence why we do not recommend them to those who weigh well over 250 lbs.

Sleeping position

Most 10-inch mattresses come in different firmness levels but if you are a strict side sleeper and need more cushioning, a thinner mattress may not be for you.

Height of your frame

If you have a low lying foundation or bed frame, a thinner mattress might give you a low lying bed resulting in difficulty getting in and out of bed.

Health and mobility

Older people and those who have chronic conditions might have difficulty getting in and out of a lower and thinner mattress.

FAQs

Is a 10-inch mattress thick enough?

A 10-inch mattress is certainly thick and comfortable enough for people to sleep on. For those who want a somewhat higher mattress, they can elevate their bed by using a higher foundation or box spring.

How much weight can a 10-inch mattress hold?

Depending on the mattress size, a 10-inch mattress can hold up to 300-500 lbs. for a single sleeper and 500-1000 lbs for a double sleeper. This includes the mattress weight as well as any other bedding used.

What’s the difference between a 10 and a 12-inch mattress?

Aside from the obvious difference of two inches, the difference between a 10 and a 12-inch mattress is that a 12-inch mattress can offer a bit more cushioning than a 10-inch one. Also, most 10-inch mattresses do not contain a coil unit and are made up of all-foam.

How many inches high should a mattress be?

There is no be-all and end-all when it comes to mattress thickness. Some people prefer thicker mattresses while other prefer something much thinner. It all depends on people’s preferences. There are pros and cons when it comes to the thickness of a mattress, it is imperative to weigh them before purchasing.

Conclusion

Most 10-inch mattresses do not come with a coil unit, limiting their suitability to a certain weight range and body type.

10-inch mattresses also tend to be firmer which would not be able to give side sleepers the proper pressure relief that they would need.
