Silk and satin bedding have been touted as serious game changers in the beauty and haircare industry for quite some time now. While the studies on the benefits of silk and satin have so far been few, there has been some evidence that points out some of the claims to be true. Since its inception in 2017, Lux Pillows Plus has been providing sleep accessories with an emphasis on health and self-care. One of their most popular products is their Sleep&ABow Decor Pillowcase which we will be reviewing today.

Available in both silk and satin, the Lux Pillows Plus Sleep&ABow pillowcase only differs in terms of fabric and feel.

At first glance, both the silk and satin pillowcases looked exactly the same. But upon touching them, you can definitely feel the difference between each type of fabric. Silk feels cooler and is somewhat thinner while satin, though not hot, feels like a thicker, sturdier fabric. Both feel very smooth to the touch.

Sleeping on them though, I felt no difference at all. Both felt cooling to the skin although a few verified reviews have said that satin had a tendency to trap heat because it is made from synthetic fibers.

The main benefits of sleeping on silk pillowcases are more of the superficial kind – literally. Some studies have shown that sleeping on silk and satin bedding can help the keep the skin and hair healthy.

Because of its smoother surface, silk and satin helps sleepers avoid facial wrinkles, especially those ones who sleep primarily on their sides and stomachs. Stomach sleepers, in particular, are quite prone to sleep wrinkles. Sleep wrinkles are temporary but they can certainly cause issues in the long term, especially if the sleeper sleeps in exactly the same position nightly.

Silk and satin also absorb less moisture than cotton does, which helps moisture from creams and conditioners stay in the skin and hair. Sleeping on a silky surface also allows the cuticles in the hair shaft to lie flat, which can help prevent frizz and tangles. This is especially noticeable in dry and damaged hair hence why a lot of hairdressers often recommend silk pillowcases to their clients.

What sets the Lux Pillows Plus Sleep&ABow pillowcase apart from other silk pillowcases is its design. Not only is it pretty and quite feminine to look at – it’s basically a giant bow surrounding the pillow – there’s actually function to the form.

The bow slips out from its notch and can act as both a sleep mask and a silk sleeve which you can insert either a warming or cooling pack to help with aches and pains you may experience.

Lux Pillows Plus includes the following accessories with each purchase of the Sleep&ABow pillowcase: a gel pack that can either be warmed or cooled, a small sleep journal and silicon earplugs. These are very welcome inclusions and highlights the fact that Lux Pillows Plus puts self-care above anything else.

I honestly thought the bow was going to be a bit too fiddly to sleep with but upon trying it out, it’s like it’s not even there. I highly appreciated the gel pack since I suffer from a constant crick on the side of my neck.

When it comes to skin and hair benefits, I would say the pillowcase helped control my frizzy hair better than it kept my skin wrinkle-free. As a stomach sleeper, this was unavoidable but I did find that my sleep wrinkles were not as pronounced and disappeared within a few minutes. Hence why, back sleeping is highly recommended by dermatologists and skin experts since it also helps keep any creams or face medications stay on the face rather than transfer onto the pillow.

Another thing I liked about the Sleep&ABow pillowcase is that it comes in a wide variety of colors that can suit any type of decor in your bedroom or home. It comes in two sizes, a King and a Queen/Standard. I chose pink, of course.

The satin used by Lux Pillows Plus are 100% vegan and are machine washable. The silk version is made from Mulberry silk, the most premium quality silk there is. It needs a little extra care and can either be handwashed or dry-cleaned only.

If you have a pet, however, and they sleep with you, be prepared for any snags or tears. You may want to keep their claws trimmed at all times if you do. I found this out the hard way.

All in all, I had a pretty good experience with silk and satin pillowcases. The pillowcases also make great gifts.

While they are by no means a miracle cure for existing wrinkles, they can be a tool to help delay the inevitable for just a little while longer. Plus there’s nothing more luxurious than the feeling of silk on the skin.

Lux Pillows offers a 14 day refund policy for all of their sleep accessories.

Silk vs Satin

While both silk and satin have that unmistakable smooth and slinky feel, they are two completely different fabrics. Most notably in how they are produced.

Satin is actually a term for the type of weave used in how the fabric is made. Usually made from synthetic fabric like polyester or rayon, satin can also be made from silk.

Silk, on the other hand, is made from the cocoon of silkworms. First produced in China in the 1500s, it slowly made its way to the rest of the world. In olden times, only royalty could wear clothing made from pure silk. Today, silk is used in everything from clothes to hair accessories to bedding. It is easily available although premium quality silk can still command royal prices.
