saatva siena bed frame and saatva mattress
Saatva Siena Bed Frame

Pros

  • Looks and feels elegant
  • Does not need a box spring or extra foundation
  • Sturdy and durable

Cons

  • Can be time consuming and expensive to upkeep
  • Not for anyone with cats or dogs (or any other pet with claws)
  • Only comes in three standard sizes

Crafted with sustainably sourced premium leather, Saatva’s Siena Leather Platform bed frame looks better with time as natural leather develops a distinct, shiny patina as it ages. Aside from feeling and looking utterly luxurious, leather furniture denotes a sense of class but the upkeep can be (very) tedious.

Known for their premium quality, organic mattresses, Saatva also makes platform bed frames and adjustable bases. While Saatva’s bed frames work extremely well with their own mattresses, they can be used with mattresses from different brands as well, so if you love your current mattress but need a bit of a class upgrade on your bed frame, then this might just be the one for you.

Named after a city in Tuscany, Siena is home to the Piazza del Campo, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in all of Europe. The Duomo del Siena, a medieval gothic-style church can be found in this square, and it houses more than a few pieces of artwork from some of the founding fathers of modern art. It’s only natural that the Siena Platform bed frame takes inspiration from the timeless architecture dotting the city.

Featuring a fully upholstered headboard that allows you the option of a freestanding bed, the Siena bed frame almost acts as a centerpiece for your bedroom, especially since it only comes in larger standard mattress sizes.

The leather used in the Siena bed frame is REACH and Prop 65 Compliant. This means that all the chemicals used in processing the leather are registered with EU REACH to ensure all substances meet the restrictions of human health and environmental safety. Sustainably and locally sourced, the leather used in the Siena bed frames are processed and finished using both ethical and eco-friendly procedures. Saatva offers you the option to choose between 3 different leather tints to suit your décor and aesthetic leanings – we quite liked the Espresso Antica leather.

The frame itself is made out of sustainably sourced, kiln-dried hardwood. Kiln drying the wood ensures that the wood becomes extra durable and will not twist or warp with use and time.

Premium stained wood slats act as the base of the bed. These are thick and wide and can hold a standard sized mattress. When used with a reinforced mattress like the Saatva HD – which is meant for sleepers weighing 300-500lbs – the use of a bunkie board, along with the wooden slats, is recommended. That said, no box spring or foundation is needed for the Siena Bed frame but it can be paired with Saatva’s Lineal Adjustable base, if you want want to turn your bed frame into an adjustable bed.

Multiple bolts and brackets ensure that the headboard, foot board and side rails stay firmly in place. The Siena Platform bed frame also features multiple support feet. This adds stability and durability to the entire frame. The bolts, brackets and feet do not detract from the overall appearance and aesthetic of the Siena mattress, we found them to be discreetly positioned.

While the Siena bed frame is the ideal bed frame for those who prefer an upholstered bed frame, we do not recommend it to people with pets, especially cats. The combination of leather and upholstery is like catnip to them. Those who are bothered by the smell of natural leather might also be put off by its strong scent so if this sounds like you then you might want to look into the other bed frames on our list.

#2. Tuft & Needle Wood Frame

Check Current Price | Best Wooden Bed Frame

tuft and needle wood frame with mattress
Tuft & Needle Wood Bed Frame

Pros

  • Excellent for those who prefer classic wooden frames
  • Strong and sturdy
  • Easy assembly

Cons

  • Not water or scratch-resistant
  • Only comes in 4 sizes
  • Non-adjustable

Sometimes, simplicity is all that is needed and a simple wooden bed frame is all you might need. A wood bed frame made out of solid wood can oftentimes be even more durable than metal bed frames, especially ones that are made with thin, flimsy metal.

The Tuft & Needle Wood frame is made from high quality hardwood that sustainably sourced from the USA, ensuring durability and stability for a very long time.

With a weight capacity of up to 800 lbs, the Tuft & Needle Wood bed frame can hold 2 people comfortably, as well as a mattress that’s thick and hefty. If you are someone who weighs over 300 lbs, this could be a good sturdy bed frame that could hold your weight plus a mattress made specifically for heavier set individuals.

There are two wood types used in the Tuft & Needle Wood frame – Oak and Walnut. Tuft & Needle gives you the option to choose between the two finishes as well. A walnut veneer is slightly darker than the oak veneer, and it’s up to you and your decor styles to see which one suits your preferences the most.

Although we found the Tuft & Needle Wood frame to be quite sturdy, it is important to keep in mind that wood – even a hard wood frame – is not scratch or stain resistant. Tuft & Needle recommends keeping water away from the surface of their Wood frame. Scratches, on the other hand, are unavoidable and in my honest opinion, add a bit of character to the bed.

To care for your wooden frame, Tuft & Needle recommends frequent dusting with a non-abrasive cloth and immediately wiping dry. The use of cleaning agents and solvents may affect the finish of your wooden bed frame but you can use cleaning materials made specifically for wood.

We found the assembly instructions to be fairly easy to follow and we had the bed ready for use within 30 minutes. The bed itself does not come with tools (this is not Ikea) so you may need to bust out your tool box if you get the Tuft & Needle Wood bed frame. There is no need for a box spring or a bed base for the bed frame as it already comes with wooden slats. We also found the bed frame to offer ample storage space underneath.

The Tuft & Needle Wood bed frame is suitable for all types of mattresses, including spring mattresses and all-foam mattresses. It does, however, only come in 4 sizes.

Sizes

  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

Warranty

Tuft & Needle offers a 100 night risk-free sleep trial for their Wooden bed frame. It also comes backed by a 12 year limited warranty. Tuft & Needle offers free shipping for all their mattresses, pillows and platform bed frames within the continental United States.

A bed is no longer just a simple elevated base that supports a mattress. Nowadays, bed frames can come all in one and by which we mean, a box spring, bed frame and foundation all in one .

The GhostBed All-in-One Foundation is a box spring and foundation wrapped in one nifty little package. Foregoing the need of a separate metal bed frame, the GhostBed Foundation features a sturdy all-metal construction that can hold up to a whopping 2000 lbs. This is probably the only bed frame we’ve come across thus far that has a tremendous weight capacity.

A steel frame or a metal bed is one of the sturdiest bed frames to be had and we found the GhostBed All-in-One Foundation to be a testament to that fact. No creaky metal hinges here, everything snaps into place without using a lot of elbow grease.

The assembly instructions were very easy to follow and we spent probably around 15 minutes in total putting the GhostBed Foundation together. It was as simple as unboxing the components, unfolding the frame, snapping the adjustable legs into place and putting on the slip-on cover.

The adjustable legs mean you can customize the height of your bed to either 3 inches or 6 inches. If you need a little bit of under bed storage, you can definitely use the GhostBed All-in-One Foundation as a storage bed as well.

Box springs used to be standard when it comes to innerspring mattresses but with the introduction of hybrid mattresses, a platform frame that also acts as a foundation has rendered the use of a box spring almost to the point of being obsolete.

Speaking of mattresses, you can use any type of mattress on the GhostBed Foundation, whether foam, latex, innerspring or hybrid. While most brands would like for you to use their own mattresses with their bed frames, if your existing mattress is still in tiptop shape and all you need is a new bed frame, then you can definitely keep using it. Don’t believe otherwise (unless your mattress comes with explicit instructions to be used with only certain types of frames).

But what if you don’t really like the cold, industrial look of an all-metal bed, you might ask? The GhostBed Foundation comes with a contemporary slip-on cover that features a clean, modern style. Obviously, you will be dressing up your bed with sheets, duvets and pillows but we think it’s a nice little touch that GhostBed has added.

Although the GhostBed Foundation works extremely well as a standalone bed, it does come with brackets in the event that you would like to attach a headboard or a footboard, or even both.

We really can’t find too much fault with the GhostBed All-in-One Foundation, especially since it is also a fairly affordable bed. Well.. Maybe if they made one with rounded corners and different colored slip-on covers, just for the sake of variety.

The GhostBed All-in-One Foundation comes in 7 different sizes, including a Split King option.

Sizes

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King
  • Split King

Warranty

The GhostBed All-in-One Foundation does not come with a sleep trial, nor does GhostBed offer any returns. It does come backed by a substantial 20 year warranty.

#4. PlushBeds Quiet Balance Bed Frame

plushbeds quit balance bed frame
PlushBeds Quiet Balance Bed Frame

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Quiet
  • Good for couples

Cons

  • Does not come with a base and foundation (needs to be purchased separately)
  • All the add-ons may jack up price

Bed frames and mattresses can be quite expensive and should be considered as an investment. But not everyone can shell out thousands of dollars for premium quality bed frames at the drop of a hat. Thankfully, most mattress brands these days offer good quality bed frames and foundations at different price points.

The PlushBeds Quiet Balance bed frame features a distinct sound-absorbing construction that absorbs any sort of noise between the frame and your mattress, making it a good choice for those who share a bed, especially if either you or your partner is a light sleeper. The PlushBeds Quiet Balance bed frame’s sound-absorbing design also helps absorb motion transfer.

Made from a non-toxic, advanced polymer resin and recycled steel, the PlushBeds bed frame features an edge to edge supportive design that helps keep the frame sturdy and stable – strong enough for even heavier set individuals.

We found the PlushBeds bed frame to be a sturdy frame, strong enough to support a weight capacity of up to 500 lbs. The tapered legs do not budge once everything is set in place.

The smooth, metal rails offer clean lines inspired by classic mid century design. The classic mid century details will not detract from the overall aesthetic of your bedroom. You also have the option to add a cushy upholstered headboard or either a wood headboard. The 8″ rise of the PlushBeds bed frame means you can utilize the space beneath the bed as under-bed storage.

Although not all of us can afford an interior designer but a little dressing up with good, quality linen and pillows as well as a foundation and an optional headboard can turn your PlushBeds Quiet Balance bed frame into the best upholstered bed.

We found setting the PlushBeds bed frame up to be quick and what we liked most about it is that there are no tools required. All in all, it took us about 10 minutes to get the bed frame up.

All of PlushBeds bed frames and mattresses are made entirely in the USA with American-sourced materials.

The PlushBeds Quiet Balance Bed frame comes in 6 standard sizes, including a California King.

Amerisleep Platform Bed Frame

The best bed frames for heavier individuals are ones that are not only built to last but ones that can also accommodate a higher weight capacity. If you weigh above 250 lbs., and your existing bed frame just isn’t cutting it anymore, you might want to look into Amerisleep’s Platform bed frame.

A good number of bed frames – even ones that are deemed to be good quality – can develop soft spots due to regular wear and tear. Heavier individuals or couples may need something more substantial like a platform bed as wear and tear can happen faster for them than most. Amerisleep’s Platform bed frame is equipped with thick, hardwood slats that are spaced evenly to provide optimum support.

Thicker wooden slats mean the bed can hold a great amount of weight, especially if you would also use a thicker type of mattress like the Bear Hybrid. Aside from the wooden slats, Amerisleep’s Platform bed also features center supports as added reinforcement for extra durability. These reinforcements mean that the Platform bed is a good option for those who share a bed with either a partner, a pet or kids.

The solid wood slats of the Amerisleep Platform bed frame is spaced in a way that you can place your mattress directly on top of them. Do bear in mind though that not all platform beds are built this way and you may need to add additional slats or even bunkie boards if using beds from other brands.

With a weight capacity of up to 750 lbs., the Amerisleep Platform bed works with all types of mattresses, including innersprings and hybrid mattresses. No base or box spring is needed.

The Amerisleep Platform bed is meant to be a standalone bed and it does come with the option to add a headboard so if you have an oak veneer headboard or an upholstered headboard you want to use, you might want to try looking into other brands like the Casper Repose bed frame that offer the option for add-on headboards.

Sleek and modern, the Amerisleep Platform bed frame’s side rails come encased in a stylish gray fabric that can complement any decor style. The sides also feature rounded edges for both comfortability and safety. There is also ample space underneath to utilize as underbed storage.

The Amerisleep Platform bed frame is another one on our list that does not need the use of a tool box for assembly. We found the side rails slide together in just seconds and the wooden slats took only a few minutes to put into place.

Although Amerisleep does recommend the best combination for their bed frames are their mattresses, you can use their Platform bed frame with any other mattress brand if you so wish.

All of Amerisleep’s bed frames are made in the USA.

The Platform bed frame comes in 6 different standard sizes, including Twin XL sizes.

Sizes

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

Durability

As with most of the brands on our list, Amerisleep does not offer a sleep trial for their bed frames. They do come backed by 1 year warranty and Amerisleep offers free shipping within the USA.

What types of bed frames are available?

There are quite a few different types of bed frames available on the market nowadays. These range from different makes, finishes and types but one thing remains the same – they all provide support to your mattress.

  • Standard or Traditional bed frame – This is the bed frame most people are familiar with. Generally meant to be used with a box spring, standard bed frames lay low on the ground and cannot provide under-bed storage. Innerspring mattresses are mostly used with a standard bed frame. These can come in Twin, Full, Queen and King sizes.
  • Simple bed frame – Similar to a traditional frame and may sometimes require a box spring depending on the brand, simple bed frames can often stand alone and don’t generally need a foundation. These, however, do not come with a headboard and footboard and do not come with much embellishments or features. Simple bed frames come in all mattress sizes.
  • Platform bed frame – Platform frames always feature thick, sturdy bases (as well as strong, stable legs) that also act as the bed foundation. These type of bed frame are used for mattresses that are thicker and heavier. These can come with headboards and footboards but can also come without. A good example of a platform bed is a floyd bed frame. A floyd frame is designed to be used without a box spring.
  • Metal bed frame – As its name suggests, metal bed frames are bed frames made out of metal, usually steel. The more classic metal bed frames can also be made out of iron and brass. A mix of metal and wood can come into play when it comes to metal bed frames, since wooden slats (or and mdf frame) are usually used as a base.
  • Adjustable bed frame – Adjustable beds used to be only used in hospitals and clinics but nowadays, bed companies have come started offering adjustable bed frames or zero gravity beds that can be controlled either manually or via remote. Adjustable frames can be expensive but some mattress brands have also begun offering adjustable bases that can work with your existing bed frame.
  • Upholstered bed frame – Stuffed, tufted and covered in either fabric or other materials such as leather, upholstered bed frames are usually large and in charge, taking center stage in the bedroom. Canopy beds are usually upholstered beds, although upholstered bed frames can also be quite simple in make.
  • Wood bed frame – The most commonly used material when it comes to bed frames, wood, such as oak, elm, walnut and even mango wood are among some of the more popular choices when it comes to wooden frames. These frames can either be standard, simple or a platform bed. Wooden slats provide the base for these types of frames, with sometimes a little help from bunkie boards.
