We get it. Reading the fine print can be confusing and tedious but when it comes to mattress warranties such as the Avocado Mattress warranty, it is imperative that you know what you are entitled to. But don’t fret, we’ve combed through all the fine print so you won’t have to.
How the Avocado mattress warranty works
Depending on the type of Avocado mattress you purchased, the mattress warranty works by protecting you against any factory defects which may appear during the allotted warranty time period.
These manufacturing defects may not be noticeable to the naked eye and may only appear with wear and use but I’ll talk more about what the warranty covers below.
Avocado’s mattress warranty is limited coverage. This means that although the warranty period may be 25 years, there are conditions that fall within each length of time that passes as the mattress is used.
For all of Avocado’s mattresses (which are the Avocado Green mattress, Avocado Vegan mattress, Organic Luxury mattress, Grand Organic mattress, Avocado Latex mattress, Green Crib mattress and the Luxury Organic Crib mattress), the warranty period is 25 years.
For the Avocado Eco Organic mattress, Eco Organic Kids mattress and Eco Organic Crib mattress, the warranty period covers 10 years.
For Avocado’s mattress toppers such as the Organic Latex mattress topper, Luxury Organic mattress topper and the Vegan mattress topper, the warranty period is 10 years whereas the Eco Organic mattress topper and Alpaca Wool mattress topper, the warranty period is 1 year.
For smaller mattresses such as doggie beds and other bedding, the warranty period varies from 1 year to 3 years.
Avocado also offers bed frames and foundations and their warranties vary from 10 to 20 years.
We go into more detail about the mattress itself in our Avocado review. In this article I’m focusing exclusively on the warranty: how it works, what’s covered, and what the terms and conditions are.
One of the common Avocado mattress complaints is that the warranty is hard to understand. Hopefully this guide clears thing up.
What the warranty covers
The Avocado mattress warranty covers the following:
- Visible indentations that are equal or greater than 1.5 inches in Avocado mattresses that are not a result of improper usage or use of the wrong bed frame or foundation.
- Visible indentations that are three-fourths of an inch for Avocado crib mattresses.
- Any physical flaw in the Avocado’s natural latex foam that causes it to split or crack with normal use and/or proper handling.
- Manufacturing defects in the mattress cover such as tears, holes, stitches unravelling and any cosmetic damages not caused by normal wear and tear and proper use.
- Size variations greater than 2 inches in any dimension after 30 days of regular use.
Terms and conditions
With every mattress warranty from any mattress company worth its salt, there are terms and conditions that protect both you (the consumer) and the company.
- The mattress warranty begins from the date of purchase.
- The mattress must only be used for its intended purpose.
- The mattress must be used on a rigid and solid surface or slatted bed base that is structurally capable of supporting both the mattress and the user.
- Foundations, bed bases and bed frames (including bunkie boards) purchased from third party vendors must meet the structural requirements needed by each Avocado mattress type according to mattress size. A foundation or bed frame must have at least five to six leg supports and a center support leg for the Queen, King and California King mattress sizes and at least four leg supports for Twin and Full size mattresses.
- In case a slatted base is used with the bigger mattress sizes such as the Queen, King and California King size beds, the space between the slats cannot be greater than 5 inches and each slat must be at least 2 and half inches in width. The foundation must not flex, it must be unyielding.
- Upon purchasing an Avocado mattress that comes rolled or compressed, it must be opened within 30 days of purchase. Keeping the mattress rolled and compressed for prolonged periods may void the warranty.
- Users must rotate the mattress once a month for the first 6 months, then every other month for the rest of the time period that the mattress is used. This ensures even wear.
- The Avocado mattress warranty is non-transferable and only applies to a mattress purchased from Avocado Mattress by the original purchaser.
- Failure to follow any of the terms and conditions may void your Avocado mattress warranty.
Exclusions
The Avocado mattress warranty does NOT cover the following:
- Normal wear and tear resulting from regular use.
- Stains or damages resulting from misuse and/or mishandling the mattress.
- Using the mattress in unsanitary conditions.
- Normal increase in softness or slight difference in firmness due to normal and regular use.
- Comfort preference variations. The firmness guide provided by Avocado Mattress does not guarantee the firmness or softness of the mattress since mattress firmness is greatly influenced by a person’s body weight.
- Mold, odors and/or discoloration caused by abnormal and improper use such as liquid spills, water exposure and using the mattress in a room with poor ventilation.
- Minor imperfections and slight cosmetic flaws such as slightly asymmetrical corners and slightly uneven surfaces not greater than 1 inch.
- Any condition that results from abusive handling or neglect which can include but is not limited to physically abusing the mattress, cleaning the mattress inappropriately and improper storage.
- Purchasing the mattress from an unauthorized retailer.
How long does the Avocado warranty last?
For most of Avocado’s mattresses except for the Avocado Eco Organic mattress, the Eco Organic Kids mattress and the Eco Organic Crib mattress, the warranty period is 25 years.
From years 1 through 10, Avocado will not charge the purchaser for repair or replacement of the mattress provided that the mattress is deemed eligible to qualify under the terms and conditions set under the Avocado mattress warranty. This period is non-prorated.
From years 11 through 25, Avocado will replace the mattress for a prorated charge along with shipping and handling fees depending on the year the mattress is replaced.
During the 11th year, the purchaser pays 50% of the original purchase price.
After year 11 but before the 21st year, an additional 5% will be added for each subsequent year of the prorated period.
If the mattress is replaced in year 21, the prorated replacement charge will be 95% of the original purchase price.
No matter the year, the replacement shall be the same model and size as the original model purchased. Under no circumstances will Avocado honor requests for a different replacement model unless the original model has been discontinued. Even so, the replacement model will be as per Avocado’s discretion.
If you have a mattress replaced or returned within the sleep trial period (which is 365 days), this effectively ends the sleep trial. Avocado’s return policy is pretty straightforward.
How to make an Avocado warranty claim
It’s fairly easy to make an Avocado mattress warranty claim.
First, you need to contact Avocado’s customer service via email at support@avocadomattress.com.
A warranty claim form will then be supplied to you. All the requirements are listed on the warranty claim form. All you need to do is to fill it out, send the requirements and send it back to Avocado’s customer service team through email.
These requirements are:
- Valid original proof of purchase clearly showing the date of purchase and that the claimant is the original purchaser and still has the bed.
- Photographic evidence of the law tag (or mattress tag) and that it is intact and has not been tampered with or removed.
- Photos of the mattress, base and/or bed frame and the defects found in accordance with the warranty. All measurements must be measured with tailor’s tape (this means your kid’s school ruler will not suffice).
Avocado may request you to provide more photos, information or additional measurements if needed. In rare and extreme cases, Avocado reserves the right to send a representative for physical inspection.
Remember, your mattress warranty may be voided if you do not comply or if you refuse to cooperate with an investigation.
Avocado services all 50 states of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. If you and the product are located outside of the USA, you shall be responsible for all shipping costs for both pickup and return.
Important tip: Always keep the receipt when purchasing a mattress. Never remove or tamper the mattress or law tag.
Is there an extended warranty option?
Avocado mattress does not offer an extended warranty option.
