If you’re looking for a new mattress then one of the first things you need to know is how much you can expect to spend. We checked the current prices of all of the leading brands and came up with an average amount you can expect to spend. How much does a queen mattress cost? Let’s find out.
How Much Does a Queen Mattress Cost?
The average Queen mattress costs around $1,330.
The price highly depends on a number of factors that I’ll discuss below, but here I’ll just briefly mention the average price range for different types of Queen-size mattresses, so you can get a better idea of how much each mattress type costs:
- Memory Foam Mattress — $800 to $1400
- Innerspring Mattress — $800 to $1200
- Latex Mattress — $1800 to $2500
- Hybrid Mattress — $1500 to $2000
- Air Mattress — $150 to $200

Queen Mattress Cost by Brand
Just like mattress costs vary based on mattress type, they also vary between mattress brands.
You can find a new mattress for as low as $300 or as high as $5,000+.

Check out this list of over a dozen mattress brands and their average mattress prices so you can see exactly what I’m talking about.
- 5 Little Monkeys — $1,199 (the only model)
- Airweave — $5,250
- Amerisleep — $1,432
- Amore — $1,114
- Awara — $1,299
- Casper — $2,052
- Elm — $1,349
- Emma — $749
- Lytton — $1,599
- Mainstays — $529
- Maxtrix — $579
- Nolah — $1,569
- Purple — $3,387 ($1,463 average for the Essential collection, $5,932 average for the Luxe collection)
- Puffy — $1,649
- Vibe — $393
- Zoma — $1,065
As you can see, a queen mattress is definitely more than the price of a twin mattress.
I’m personally all in for identifying the best price-quality ratio so you can get the most for the lowest reasonable amount. You should seek the best value, basically. Or to put it short, take the middle road.
If you’re looking to buy a new mattress, definitely go for a quality mattress, but don’t fall for bells and whistles. Fancy layers and special materials drive the price up, but they don’t guarantee a good night’s sleep.
After all, we’re all different. One person needs a firmer mattress, while another would wake up in excruciating pain on the exact same one.
What Affects the Price of a Queen Mattress?
If you were reading carefully, you’ll notice that the first price-determining factor I mentioned above was the mattress type and the second one was the brand. But, wait! There’s more!
Here are all the main reasons Queen mattresses could be cheap or expensive:
- mattress type
- brand
- quality
- thickness
- rare sizes: Split Queen, California Queen, Olympic Queen
- added features
- promotions and sales
Mattress type
Materials are obviously important. Not just the quality, but also the type of materials. Interestingly enough, the actual weight of the mattress corresponds to the price.
Heavier materials seem to also be more expensive. That’s why air mattresses are the cheapest, all-foam mattresses and innerspring mattresses are in between, and latex mattresses are the most expensive.
Other than that, a mattress type also includes design and construction. Certain types of coils are more expensive than others, and several foam layers of various densities make a mattress cost more than one which is a simple slab of foam.
Brand
Sometimes a name or a logo is enough to sell a product and this is what some brands exploit. If people think they are buying a reliable product, the company might get away with some cheaper materials while keeping the price higher.
But many brands, especially those made in the USA, still work hard to improve their mattresses. They invest in research and development of new materials and they often have their own proprietary foam or material blends that have something unique to offer.
All of that drives the price up, unlike mattresses made in China which use cheap materials, are made by low-cost labor force, and whose materials are supplied at the same limited number of factories.
Quality
Quality should be an obvious one. Higher quality materials are made of more expensive raw materials. Sometimes those are hard to get. Cheap mattresses rarely last long. They tend to break down easily and were usually not made as skillfully as more expensive mattresses.

Thickness
I mentioned above that heavier mattresses cost more. Thicker mattresses also cost more. They use more materials and that’s why they are — you guessed it — heavier.
Higher-profile mattresses look luxurious, which in itself raises the cost. They also often have a more complex construction. This is why a hybrid mattress is more than either an all-foam or an innerspring.
You’ll notice that the same model may come in different profile options, so a 10″ mattress is almost always more expensive than a 12″ thick mattress.
Rare sizes: Split Queen, California Queen, Olympic Queen
If you opt for any of the unusual sizes, you’ll probably have to pay more. Even a Split Queen, made of two 30″ by 80″ mattresses that make the bed size the same as the dimensions of a regular Queen (60″ by 80″), is more expensive although it’s not any larger. This is only because it’s different.
A California Queen size mattress is four inches longer than a regular Queen. It’s great for a really tall couple, but it comes with a higher price.
Compare Olympic Queen to a Queen mattress, and you’ll see the Olympic Queen is six inches wider. This also calls for more materials and a higher price. Also, it’s the rarest and largest of all mattress sizes mentioned above.
Added features
Anything extra that comes with a mattress is likely to drive the price up. This includes smart mattress features, cooling technology, zoned support, etc.
It can also include any extras you buy with the mattress. If you’re on a budget, you should factor in all accessories you’re planning to get. Think mattress topper, protector, new sheets, a foundation or a box spring.
Check if there’s any additional price for shipping, old mattress removal, delivery, and setup. These services are known as white glove delivery and tend to cost about $200 if the company doesn’t provide them for free.
Promotions and sales
Every holiday in the US is marked with sales, so make sure to browse before and during the holiday season, so you can compare the before and after prices for yourself.
Christmas, New Year’s, Mother’s Day, Black Friday, and all the other holidays including July 4th and Presidents Day are worth checking out.
May is the month with the lowest mattress prices as manufacturers are preparing to release new models in summer (also keep in mind that Memorial Day mattress sales are in May).
One thing to be careful about is that some manufacturers have perpetual “sales” and “discounts” on their websites. Sometimes there’s even a countdown telling you how soon the sale is going to expire, but in reality, the sale is always there. For example, you’ll see “old” prices of over $1,500 that are crossed out and “new” prices that are $800.
What Type of Person Should Choose a Queen-size Mattress?
Queen mattresses are generally the best choice for couples and for people who have an average-sized bedroom.
Some parents might want to spoil their teens with Queen mattresses and it’s not uncommon for singles or people who sleep with pets (and aren’t strapped for cash) to opt for a Queen. Either way, the most traditional choice would be for the first two groups — couples and medium-sized bedrooms.
Couples
Size Queen is long enough for the majority of people to sleep comfortably and wide enough for two adults to sprawl (within reason). They probably wouldn’t lack space if they had a small child or a pet sleeping with them.

People with average-sized bedrooms
As a rule, you should leave at least two feet of room between the bed and the nearest object (wall, furniture) so that each sleeper can get up comfortably. Also, the bed frame size should match the size of the room and it’s usually not the best idea to squeeze a large bed into too small of a place.
Queen beds are 80 inches long and 60 inches wide and they fit best into bedrooms that are about 10 feet by 12-14 feet.

FAQs
This mainly depends on the mattress type, because each material has its own lifespan. Innerspring mattresses last for about 8 years, hybrids up to 10, memory foam mattresses around 13, and a natural latex bed can last for nearly 15 years or sometimes even longer.
May is the best month to buy a mattress. Many manufacturers release new models in June, so they drop the prices of old mattress models to clear up their inventories. Also, Memorial Day weekend is in the last week of May, which is when most stores mark their prices low.
Not every good mattress has to be expensive. Some of them are because they are made of premium materials. For example, Queen-size latex mattresses are some of the most expensive ones. Natural latex itself is expensive but it lasts the longest of all mattress materials. On the other hand, you could find a cheaper higher-density foam mattress that costs much less and still can serve you for a long time, while giving you proper spinal alignment and a good night’s rest.
Conclusion
With a price range from $300 to over $5,000, the average Queen mattress cost is about $1,330.
How much you’ll have to pay for a particular Queen bed depends on brand, materials/type, height/thickness, quality, added features, whether it’s a regular Queen or one of the Queen versions, and finally, if you’re buying it while a sale is on or not.
A mattress doesn’t need to be expensive to be good, that is, to be good for you. A clever choice is always better than an expensive one.
