Temperature is the number one cause of sleeplessness for many people. And those who lead active lifestyles may sleep hotter than most due to their elevated core temperature. Made specifically for those who sleep hot, Molecule mattresses have become a favorite mattress brand of some of the top athletes in the country. In this Molecule Mattress review, we take a closer look why. Our Editor’s Choice is the Molecule 1.

The Molecule 1 is Molecule’s flagship mattress. With only three layers, it is also their most simple design. But in the mattress world, simple does not necessarily mean lacking, in fact oftentimes it means the simpler the better.
The Molecule 1 features Molecule’s very own Air-Engineered technology that allows hot sleepers to sleep cooler – no matter whether they live an active lifestyle or not.
Who should buy the Molecule 1?
- Hot sleepers
- All sleeper types
- Couples
- Those who prefer a more responsive all-foam mattress without springs
Firmness
The Molecule 1 mattress sits on a 5-7 on the mattress firmness scale. This makes it a medium to medium firm mattress that can accommodate all sleeping positions – that means stomach, back and side sleepers alike. This is also a good option for couple with different sleeping positions.
Lightweight sleepers who sleep strictly on their sides though may find the Molecule 1 mattress to be a little too firm for them and may cause undue pressure on their hips and shoulders. On the same note, heavier individuals may find the mattress to be a little too soft.
Those who weigh significantly over 250 lbs however, may find that the Molecule 1 mattress could not provide them with the support and comfort that they would need. We always recommend hybrid mattresses for those who are heavier set as these are the types of beds that could give them the most pressure relief.
I am a 61kg mostly stomach sleeper and I found that the Molecule 1 mattress provided me with the lumbar support that I needed. Stomach sleepers and back sleepers need a firmer mattress which helps give them better back support and spinal alignment. Strict side sleepers may may need a softer mattress but a few people people on our team who sleep on their sides have found the Molecule 1 to be sufficiently pressure-relieving.
Construction
Traditional memory foam mattresses have a tendency to trap body heat which is a major issue for hot sleepers who prefer an all-foam bed. A good number of mattress brands have addressed the problem of all-foam mattresses by creating their own proprietary memory foam as well as memory foam alternatives.
There are only three foam layers within the Molecule 1 mattress. It also features a moisture-wicking cover that is embedded with a temperature sensitive polymer which responds dynamically, adjusting to the body temperature as needed. Unfortunately, the mattress cover is not removable nor washable so should accidents or spills happen, spot clean immediately.
Molecule mattress came up with RestoreFlo as their memory foam comfort layer, a proprietary open-cell memory foam that’s also infused with micro-gel beads. Open-cell memory foam allows better air flow and constant circulation, keeping the mattress cool and dry. Was Molecule 1 the coolest mattress we’ve tried? Unfortunately not, but I found that it did a pretty good job of helping me sleep more temperature neutral.
Micro-gel beads help with temperature regulation while providing good pressure relief. It also gives the Molecule 1 mattress a more responsive feel, allowing sleepers to easily switch positions throughout the night. There was certainly none of that stuck in the mud feel when we tried it out.
The Molecule 1 mattress also features RecoveryFlo as its support core, a proprietary 3-zone dynamic response foam layer that has a precision-cut 3D geometric surface that provides targeted, self-adjusting support for all parts of the body. Smaller diamond zones can be found in the top and bottom, providing a softer, more gentle support for the head and feet. Larger hexagon zones in the center help provide enhanced support as well as pressure relief in the lumbar region.
The base layer of the Molecule 1 mattress features yet another proprietary foam called ContourFlow, a high-density polyfoam that helps with spinal alignment. The base layer is also firmer than the rest of the other layers, providing a solid and stable base for the entire mattress.
Most all-foam beds are pretty good at motion isolation and we found the Molecule 1 to be no different. Currently I do not share a bed with a partner but I do share a bed with a large, jumpy cat and I found that I was able to sleep through the 3am zoomies. There was definitely no motion transfer.
I did wish the edge support was a little bit better though. As someone who likes sleeping fairly close to the edge of the bed, I found that the Molecule 1 mattress’ edge support to be slightly lacking in the support department. This shouldn’t be a problem though, if you are the type who likes to sleep closer to the center of the bed.
As for off-gassing, there was a very faint new mattress smell to the Molecule 1 but not as bad as some all-foam beds on the market. It went away fairly quickly but if you’d like to help move things along, you could air out the mattress in a well-ventilated area for a day or two.
All the foam layers of the Molecule 1 are CertiPUR-US certified and are made entirely in the USA.

Pros and cons

Antimicrobial |
There’s been some loud whispers that some of the country’s top athletes are sleeping on a Molecule bed and while we can’t name names unless there’s visual confirmation, we could definitely understand why.
The Molecule 2 mattress is like a souped up version of the Molecule 1, featuring the same 3 proprietary foam layers with 3 notable upgrades – an AirTec layer that sleeps 5X cooler than traditional memory foam, a BioCHARGE crystal layer that helps improve circulation and a Microban antimicrobial mattress cover.
Who should buy the Molecule 2?
- Those who tend to sleep hot
- Those who lead active lifestyles
- Back and stomach sleepers
- Those who prefer all-foam beds
Firmness
Although Molecule likens their second mattress to the Molecule 1 in terms of firmness, we found that the Molecule 2 mattress sits on a 6-8 on the mattress firmness scale. This makes is a medium-firm mattress.
As we say in almost every mattress review we have though, foam firmness is very subjective. Body types, body weight and sleeping position come into play when it comes to how a bed truly feels. Since the Molecule 2 mattress is a firmer mattress, it would be a good option for those who sleep on their backs and their stomachs, as these types of sleeping positions need firm support. Side sleepers as well as combo sleepers may find the Molecule 2 mattress to be a bit too firm. An average weight combo sleeper may get away with sleeping on a medium-firm mattress such as the Molecule 2 but those who weigh significantly less than average may find their pressure points under constant strain.
As an average weight stomach sleeper, I found that the Molecule 2 gave enough support to my hip and lumbar areas which are always the first ones to go when I sleep on a mattress that’s wrong for my sleep position. The Molecule 2 can be a great choice for couples, but only if they share similar sleeping styles.
Those who weigh over 250 lbs though may find that the Molecule 2 mattress would not give them enough support to sleep comfortably. Also, mattresses soften with time and an all-foam mattress could show signs of premature mattress sag when used by those bearing weight more than average.
Construction
A slight upgrade to the Molecule 1, the Molecule 2 mattress features an additional foam layer to the Molecule 1’s three. While they are fairly similar in their make-up, Molecule took a step further by redesigning their proprietary foam layers to provide more cooling and recovery benefits.
While it does feature the same Air-Engineered tech as all of Molecule’s other mattresses, the Molecule 2 mattress’ memory foam comfort layer is made up of an all-new memory foam alternative called the AirTec; an open-cell foam that has 5x more air flow than regular memory foam. AirTec also allows air to flow freely even when compressed, which means as you lay on it, it still lets air come through. This makes it a solid choice for those who sleep exceptionally hot. A wider and more open-celled foam also relieves pressure off the main pressure points.
Here’s something a little different about the Molecule 2: the top layer consists of a crystal-infused foam that is lab-tested and purported to promote cell function, increase oxygen consumption and increase circulation while you sleep. Although Molecule has been keeping mum about what type of crystal (or crystals) they use, it is a well-known fact that crystals are thought to be excellent energy conductors so Molecule Mattress could definitely be onto something there. While some people might dismiss this as spiritual mumbo-jumbo, I am someone who leans more into the metaphysical side of things – as are many of you may also be – so this was well appreciated. Did I feel any different upon trying out the Molecule 2? Call it a placebo, call it what you will, but I did feel more energetic the morning after.
The support core of the Molecule 2 mattress is similar to that of the Molecule 1. It also acts as the mattress’ zoned transition layer. It consists of 5 zones that provide targeted zoned support for the body from head to toe. Same with the base layer that’s made up of ContourFlow, a high-density polyfoam that’s thicker and firmer which provides the bulk of the mattress while keeping all the layers together. It also promotes better spinal alignment due to its firmness.
All these foam layers are encased in a breathable mattress cover that’s designed to maximize air flow. The cover material is also treated with Microban; a trademarked treatment that helps prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. Only downside to the mattress cover is that it’s not removable nor washable.
Once again, foam mattresses have a tendency to off-gas but I barely noticed any scent coming off the Molecule 2 mattress. There could be a slight new mattress smell but this dissipates after a couple of days.
Being a thicker and firmer mattress, the Molecule 2 fared pretty well on our motion transfer test. The firmer sleep surface made the Molecule 2 mattress’ motion isolation capabilities pretty solid.
All of the foam layers of the Molecule 2 mattress is CertiPUT-US certified. This means they are free from harmful VOCs and other chemicals that’s harmful to humans and the environment.

Molecule Hybrid

Pros and cons
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Offers responsive support | Not suitable for strict side sleepers |
Cooling | May be a bit too thick for some |
Great for heavier individuals |
Contrary to popular (and very wrong) belief, heavy does not necessarily mean fat. Take a football player for instance. A linebacker’s average weight is around 220-245 lbs. That’s over 200 lbs of muscle mass.
Heavier individuals need mattresses that can support their weight while giving them optimum pressure relief. And if you’re someone who plays sports for a living, then you may need a mattress that can help accelerate and enhance recovery.
Who should buy the Molecule Hybrid?
- Heavier individuals
- Those who sleep hot
- Those who prefer a more responsive bed
- Stomach and back sleepers
Firmness
Similar to the Molecule 2, the Molecule Hybrid sits on a 6-8 on the mattress firmness scale, making it a medium firm to firm mattress. This makes it a good mattress for back and stomach sleepers. Some combination sleepers may be able to sleep comfortably on the Molecule Hybrid, provided they switch their sleeping positions constantly.
While the Molecule Hybrid is primarily made for those who weigh heavier than average, lightweight sleepers would still get the same comfort and pressure relief that they would need, especially if they are already used to sleeping on an innerspring bed. Some people may also use mattress toppers to help soften the sleep surface.
Because of its firmer mattress feel, the Molecule Hybrid would not be suitable for strict side sleepers, especially ones who are on the heavier side. This would only cause them further and undue pressure on their main pressure points which could then lead to chronic issues in the long term.
As a stomach sleeper who grew up sleeping on innerspring mattresses, I thoroughly appreciated the responsiveness and support of the Molecule Hybrid. If you prefer softer hybrid mattresses, you might want to look into the Layla Hybrid mattress.
Construction
The construction of the Molecule Hybrid is similar to that of the Molecule 2 except for the addition of MoleculeEdge, Molecule’s individually pocketed coil system.
The mattress cover of the Molecule Hybrid also features a plush, quilted top that adds to its plushy, luxurious feel. It is also treated with Microban which helps prevent growth of microbes, mold and mildew, keeping your mattress fresh for longer.
The top comfort layer of the Molecule Hybrid is made up of MolecularFlo, a proprietary foam that delivers 5x more airflow than regular memory foam mattresses. As we’ve mentioned previously, traditional memory foam mattresses tend to trap body heat, which could be a problem for those who sleep a little too hot. Molecule’s proprietary foam layers -which can be found in both the hybrid and their all-foam mattresses – addresses temperature regulation.
Below the top layer lies AirTec, an advanced core material that also provides 5x more air flow throughout the entire mattress. This also helps with helping sleepers sleep cool and dry.
As with all of Molecule’s mattresses, the Molecule Hybrid also features a zone support layer, which they call their RecoveryFlo layer. Divided into 5 sections, each zone delivers self-adjusting support from top to toe while also helping provide good pressure relief.
The coil system of the Molecule Hybrid makes up 6″ of the entirety of the mattress. It adapts to the weight and pressure of the sleeper, providing extra responsive support. The coil system also features an enhanced edge which helps with extra edge support – crucial for edge sleepers like me.
Like with the Molecule 2 mattress, the base layer of the Molecule Hybrid is made up of a high-density polyfoam that provides firm, foundational support while promoting better spinal alignment.
The combination of the coil unit and Molecule’s proprietary cooling tech foam layers did help me sleep cooler – not once did I feel even just a smidgen of heat, eventhough I am currently based in a hotter climate.
Hybrid mattresses are pretty much great at isolation any cross-mattress movement and we found that the Molecule Hybrid did a pretty good job of preventing motion transfer. Softer hybrids though, may not provide excellent motion isolation.
All of the foam layers of the Molecule Hybrid are CertiPUR-US certified and are free from any harmful toxins, chemicals and VOCs.
Sizes
The Molecule Hybrid mattress comes in 6 sizes, including a California King. It measures 13″ tall and is compatible with most bed frames, bases and foundations. If you have an existing bed frame and want to use it with your new mattress, please make sure that the exact dimensions of the mattress matches that of your frame.
