Today we talk about their mattress topper, which is made from sustainably sourced, eco lyocell. Mattress toppers are used to modify a mattress’ firmness level and make it more comfortable to sleep on.

Here’s the thing – I currently sleep on a very firm bed. 8-10 on the mattress firmness scale hard, which is essentially a rock. This is because I started out as a staunch stomach sleeper and stomach sleepers are advised to sleep on a firmer bed. A firm mattress offers more support to someone who sleeps mostly on their backs and stomachs as this keeps their lumbar and spinal area in better alignment. So, science.
But because of a medical condition I needed to train myself to sleep more on my sides. The main pressure points of side sleepers are their shoulders and side sleeping plus an extra firm mattress are a combo made in a torture chamber. There is no such thing as a good night’s sleep – or any sleep at all – if you are a side sleeper and currently have a Queen size rock.
But what about pillows, you might ask. Pillows may help alleviate the pain a little but unless you sleep in just one position or one spot then you’re back at pain central.
The Zoey Sleep mattress topper couldn’t have come at a better time.
I have begun to experience both shoulder, neck pain and back pain because of sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress – albeit a memory foam one. I would wake up feeling sore each morning. If you ever had trouble sleeping through pain, whether chronic or not, you’ll know that your sleep quality will deteriorate over time. The best thing to do is to address the issue before it causes any long-term harm. I needed something that could give ample head and neck support while being kind to my now very sore shoulders.
Zoey Mattress Topper construction
Made from a lyocell and memory foam blend, the Zoey mattress topper also features a soft, breathable lyocell cover.
Lyocell is a form of rayon, a fabric made from pulp and fiber of mostly wood. Zoey utilizes lyocell that is sustainably sourced from wood such as eucalyptus, birchwoods and oak. Being a natural fabric, the lyocell fibers used in the Zoey mattress topper is 100% hypoallergenic, toxin-free and made without any harmful chemicals, making it a good option for those who suffer from allergies as well as kids.
The fill of the mattress topper is made up of Zoey Sleep’s own proprietary memory foam shreds. Although traditional memory foam is known to be extremely body contouring which allows you to essentially sink into the bed, shredded memory foam provides contouring without that stuck in the mud feel, giving a more responsive mattress surface. A more responsive bed allows sleepers to switch sleeping positions easily, whilst providing both body contour and pressure relief in all the right places.
The lyocell blend in the Zoey mattress topper provides extra breathability and helps prevent overheating. This makes it a good choice for those who tend to sleep hot or for those who live in warmer climates.
The Zoey mattress topper is machine washable and can be dried in a dryer but it might not fit into machines that are not industrial sized. So should any spills or accidents happen, immediate spot cleaning is key. We do always recommend the use of mattress protectors and these can go over both your topper and your mattress. This protects your bed and helps keep it fresher for longer.
First impressions
I know I said I was going for more softness and while the Zoey mattress topper is quite plush which is exactly what I wanted, it is still firm enough to be able to support even the strictest of back sleepers. Do bear in mind that if you weigh heavier than 250 lbs., a mattress topper may feel softer as body weight and gravity pulls you down more into the bed.
Upon unboxing the Zoey mattress topper, I immediately noticed the lack of off-gassing or any chemical odor which was a nice little bonus. Foam products do tend to have that new mattress smell to them but I did not experience it with the Zoey topper and I attribute it to the eco-sourced lyocell and foam blend. Off-gassing is fairly normal when it comes to foam products such as all-foam mattresses and can easily be remedied by airing out your new mattress in a well-ventilated room for a for a day or two.
It was easy to install the mattress topper. There are wide anchor bands on each corner of the topper which holds it in place no matter the size or thickness of your mattress. There’s definitely no danger of the mattress topper slipping off no matter where you’re sleeping or doing .. other things.
If your current mattress is somewhat on the thicker side and you add a mattress topper up top, you might want to invest in deep pocket sheets. This ensures that both your mattress and topper are completely covered – a mattress peep show is not a very look and can make the entire aesthetic of your room look unkempt. Thankfully, the Zoey mattress topper is not too thick and is just shy of 2″. That’s not to say the Zoey mattress topper isn’t fluffy – it’s plenty fluffy – largely in part to its quilted and tufted surface.
One week with the Zoey Mattress Topper
Day 1 – My first night trying out the mattress topper had me sleeping better than I had in months. Waking up was a little hard, only because I kind of didn’t want to get out of bed just yet. My formerly firm bed now felt like it belonged in a 5 star hotel. I wondered whether the fluffiness would deflate in time.
Day 2 – They say one of the worst things to do when working from home is to work in bed but my now plush bed is still somewhat of a novelty to me so I may or may not have spent the whole day in bed. I noticed the shredded memory foam did a pretty good job at cushioning my main pressure points both when side sleeping and stomach sleeping.
Day 3 – It’s hard to fall asleep when you just spent an entire day swimming after not having worked out in months but I think the combination of the CBD gummy I took with my now soft mattress knocked me out before I could mull over my third night mattress topper assessment.
Day 4 – My cat also seems to prefer a soft sleeping surface. He has slept the whole night through with me, right by my head. I barely felt any movement. Gold star for the Zoey mattress topper’s motion isolation.
Day 5 – Plushness is still holding up well. Loft is the same. But I think I’m beginning to wish it were just a touch thicker. Maybe Zoey Sleep needs to make toppers in different thicknesses so we’d have more options. That said, I have been getting more sleep and probably even the best sleep I’ve had in months.
Day 6 – I have decided to bump up the cozy factor by adding more pillows. Game changer. I did mention I was training myself to be a side sleeper but I still find myself on my tummy from time to time. I found it fairly easy to switch positions and the topper was pretty responsive. Not as responsive as say, latex toppers or pads but pretty good indeed.
Day 7 – Although a week isn’t nearly enough to fully gauge a mattress topper’s longevity, it’s enough to find out how it feels and whether it’s a good fit for your preferences or not. I, for one, got better sleep and dare I say it – even amazing sleep. I think it’s a keeper.

Verdict
Is it the best mattress topper I’ve tried? Maybe not but it’s definitely up there. Most people get mattress toppers to make their current mattresses softer although there are a fair few that might want to make their beds firmer so options are always good. Other mattress companies do offer a wider range of options but this is probably something Zoey Sleep can address in the future. For the price point, definitely can’t be beat, unless you go for an ultra-budget option like Mainstays. I’m sticking with my Zoey mattress topper for now.
