Made with multiple layers of proprietary memory foam alternatives, the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress is one of the most cushioning mattresses we’ve ever tried (yes, even compared to traditional memory foam mattresses).
But unlike the memory foam mattresses that most people are familiar with, the Puffy Royal mattress is cushioning yet responsive and won’t leave you with that stuck in the mud feel most associated with regular foam mattresses.
Let’s start this review by taking a look at how it did in our firmness performance test.
Firmness Test
The Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress sits on a 5-6 on the mattress firmness scale which makes it a medium.
Although this means it is suitable for all sleeper types including strict side sleepers and stomach sleepers, bear in mind that the Puffy Royal Hybrid might feel a little too soft for those who are a heavier-set.
If you’re a heavier-set sleeper and you prefer sleeping on your back, a firmer mattress would give you better support as opposed to a soft mattress which will only throw your spinal alignment out of whack.
Being a medium feel, the Puffy Royal mattress is also a great choice for couples with different sleep position preferences.
Cooling Test
We rate the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress an 8 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.
The Puffy Royal mattress features a cool to the touch Quilted Cloud cover that’s also found in Puffy’s other mattresses.
That plus the layers of blended wool, cooling gel-infused foam and Puffy’s own Climate Fiber layer work together to keep the mattress’s surface area very breathable as well as moisture-wicking.
Being a hybrid mattress, the Puffy Royal mattress’ pocketed coil unit also promotes continuous airflow all throughout the mattress which helps keep it stay fresh and cool making the Puffy Royal Hybrid an excellent choice for hot sleepers.
Comfort Test
We rate the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to comfort.
There are not two, not three but 5 different layers in the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress that specifically target cushioning and comfort.
First there’s the cooling gel-infused layer that also doubles as the mattress plush contouring layer.
Then there’s the contouring reflexive memory foam layer beneath that and Cloud the Comfort pressure relief foam layer that also helps with spinal alignment as well as providing even more pressure relief.
The Cloud Sculpting technology foam underneath that cushions the body across all 5 zones.
Then there’s the coil unit which is unlike any other hybrid coil unit we’ve ever come across – the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress features coils that come encased in foam. F-O-A-M. Not fabric. Which, needless to say, adds to the mattress’ super plush, contouring comfort.
Motion Transfer Test
We rate the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.
You would think that a hybrid mattress like the Puffy Royal Hybrid would not rate so high when it comes to isolating motion but think again.
The multiple foam layers above the coil unit absorb almost all cross mattress movement resulting in barely any motion transfer which makes the Puffy Royal mattress a solid choice for those who share a bed with a partner.
Edge Support Test
We rate the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress a 6.5 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.
Here’s where the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress flails a little.
The Puffy Royal mattress does not feature reinforced edges or extra edge support coils like other premium hybrid mattresses do which makes it pretty poor when it comes to the edge support department.
If you’re someone a bit heavier-set and you are the type of sleeper who likes to sleep close to the edge of the bed, expect some very deep sinkage or even worse, some rolling off the bed action (which you definitely do not want).
Pressure Relief Test
We rate the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to pressure relief.
Pressure relief goes hand in hand with comfort hence why we also rate the Puffy Royal mattress a 9.
The combination of memory foam, contouring foam, pressure relieving foam layers and the mattress’ plushness offer maximum pressure relief and then some.
And by some we mean that even the steel coils of the Puffy Royal mattress are covered in foam which adds even more to the mattress’ pressure relieving properties.
Construction
There are 10 layers to the Puffy Royal Hybrid mattress, which includes both the top cover and bottom mattress cover.
Made up of cooling yarns, the Cool Touch Quilted Cloud cover features Puffy’s original quilted cloud design than can be found in all of Puffy’s other mattresses including the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress and the Puffy Cloud mattress. As we’ve mentioned above, the Quilted Cloud cover is actually cool to the touch and stays that way, not just upon initial touch.
Below that lies a layer of blended wool filling that offers both temperature regulation while also acting as the mattress’ flame barrier.
Underneath that lies the Climate Fiber layer which is made up of heat-resistant fibers. This layer is breathable and moisture-wicking and helps keep heat off all the foam layers beneath.
Exclusive to the Puffy Royal mattress, an infused cooling foam and plush contouring layer lies underneath the Climate Fiber layer which helps provide both cooling and contouring comfort.
Below that lies Puffy’s own Reflexive memory foam – a memory foam alternative that responds to changes in position while also relieving any pressure.
A layer of another one of Puffy’s own proprietary foam sits beneath the memory foam. Puffy’s Cloud Comfort relief foam helps align the spine and provide optimal support.
The Cloud Sculpting technology foam layer offers full body support across 5 zones and helps cushion the head, neck, shoulders, back and legs.
The Puffy Royal mattress’ coil unit is made up of foam-encased coils and helps eliminate bounce back while absorbing motion and providing both support and stability.
The Firm Core support foam makes up the base layer of the Puffy Royal mattress. It helps with proper spinal alignment while also holding all the layers together, providing both stability and durability.
The bottom cover features a grip base as well as handles on either side for added stability.
All of the foam layers in the Puffy Royal mattress are CertiPUR-US certified.
Puffy mattresses are also fiberglass-free.

Trial Period
You get a 101 night sleep trial when you purchase a Puffy mattress.
Return Policy
In line with the 101 night sleep trial, you have exactly 101 days to return your Puffy mattress should you feel that it is not the right mattress for you.
As with most online mattress brands, Puffy recommends trying your mattress out for at least 30 days for you to get acclimated and for the mattress to meld with your body shape. This is what’s typically called the mattress break-in period.
If you still feel that the Puffy mattress is not the right fit for you, you can initiate a return request by contacting Puffy’s customer service team through email. They will then walk you through the entire return process.
Once the mattress has been confirmed received by Puffy, they will then send you a full refund to the original mode of payment you used when you purchased the mattress.
Please bear in mind that if you go over the 101 night trial for even just a day, you will not be able to initiate a return request.

All Puffy mattresses come backed by a lifetime warranty.

FAQs
All mattresses including the Puffy Royal will get slightly softer in time but for premium mattresses like Puffy mattresses this can take years and years provided you have given your mattresses proper care and maintenance.
It is not possible to flip the Puffy Royal since it is not a flippable mattress. The layers are designed to work as they are sequenced. The Puffy Royal also features two different covers for the top and bottom with the bottom cover being a grip base cover which helps the Puffy Royal mattress stay in place.
As with most premium online mattresses, the Puffy Royal is meant to last for a good 8-10 years.

Is the Puffy Royal the right mattress for you?
If you want a mattress with a plush feel: absolutely. The Royal is the perfect balance between soft and firm, and it contours to your body just like a hotel mattress.
This mattress is also great for you if you’re a heavyweight sleeper. The support layer is well-constructed and built to last. You can expect this mattress to support your back over the long haul.
You’ll also be happy with the Puffy Royal if you’re part of a couple. The motion isolation is top-notch. There’s little-to-no chance that you’ll even notice your significant other tossing and turning. It’s that good.
We did find that the mattress falls short when it comes to edge support. If you tend to sleep near the edge of the mattress or spend lots of time sitting on the edge then this might not be the mattress for you.
And if you want a very firm or very soft mattress we suggest looking elsewhere. This mattress is a solid medium in the firmness department. Not too soft, not too firm.
