If you’re looking for an affordable memory foam mattress of high quality, you’re at the right place. We’re about to show you a comparison of two famous mattress-in-a-box models.

Bear and Puffy bear many similarities – they are both medium-firm mattresses made of memory foam, they both have gel and one really thick 6-7” layer of really dense foam. Both have excellent support with pressure relief and a common drawback – poor edge support.

Unless your physical condition or age requires you to get a mattress with strong edge support, you may really like one of these mattresses. The Bear highlights its tissue repair properties whereas the Puffy shows its numerous “Best mattress” titles given by various websites.

Take a quick look at this table to get a rough idea of what these mattresses are like. We’ll get into more detail below.

Construction Comparison

Bear Construction

The Bear mattress (the memory foam model) is basically made of memory foam only (similar to cheaper brands like AmazonBasics and Mainstays). It has a cover made of Celliant and Polyester blend.

This medium-firmness mattress is made especially for fit, active people. It doesn’t mean that you can’t buy Bear if you are not that type – the company targets the sporty crowd because their mattress contains a special Celliant fabric which uses the body heat energy, converts it to infrared energy and sends it back to the body which restores muscles and other tissues after a strenuous workout.

The first layer is a two-inch graphite memory foam comfort layer. It is infused with cooling gel for temperature regulation. The second layer is made of polyfoam. It is a transitional two-inch layer that makes the mattress feel more comfortable.

The final layer is made of very dense polyfoam. This 6-inch thick foam offers support and stability to the entire mattress, except to the edges – we think that edge support should be better for mattress longevity and durability.

Puffy Construction

All Puffy mattresses are of medium firmness. Here we’ll focus on describing their basic model. According to many reviews and online sources, Puffy is great for almost all body types and all types of sleepers.

Puffy is made of three layers – all of which are made of memory foam. First is the “Cooling cloud”, a gel foam layer helping dissipate heat. Then there’s the “Climate Comfort™” which responds to humidity and temperature ensuring warm sleep in winters and cool sleep in summers. This is made of polyurethane pressure-relieving foam which, apart from supporting the weight of the body, supports the ideal temperature.

Finally, the thickest layer is the high-density foam core. It keeps the structure firmness and ensures stability. However, it doesn’t offer the best edge support which can be a problem for some users.

Customer Service Comparison

Bear warranty and trial period

The Bear mattress and its cover have separate warranties. The mattress cover is under warranty for one year.

Bear offers a 10-year warranty for manufacturing defects. It covers any visible indentations made from usage (but not if the damage was caused by the bed frame you’re using) and any flaws that cause the foam to split or crack.

During the first 10 years after the purchase (if the mattress is still in the possession of the first owner), the company will repair the mattress but won’t cover the handling and transportation expenses.

The free trial period lasts for 100 nights, which is standard in the industry. During this time you can return it for free and the company will make sure it is donated to a charity.

Puffy warranty and trial period

Puffy offers a lifetime warranty on their mattresses. This means that as long as you own the mattress, you’ll be protected from any manufacturing defects.

You can replace the mattress for the first 10 years of ownership. After that period, they will try to repair the mattress and if that turns out to be impossible, you’ll get a new one.

Shipping is free if there’s a manufacturing defect. However, you’ll have to pay $50 upfront. This amount will be returned to you once Puffy determines there indeed was a manufacturing defect.

Puffy offers a 101-night trial period within which you can return it at no cost at all and all your money will be returned. They will donate your mattress to a charity.
