The Nectar mattress – some people love it, some people hate it. And many complain about the misleading name of “Nectar Forever Warranty”. I read this warranty with all the fine print so you don’t have to. Some parts outright shocked me. Do not skip this article if you are thinking about getting a Nectar mattress.
What does the Nectar mattress warranty cover?
Here’s the full detailed list of what Nectar mattress warranty covers:
- Mattress sagging more than 1.5″ even though it was used properly, on a recommended base or foundation. Indentations smaller than 1.5″ are considered normal wear.
- If the memory foam splits, cracks, or suffers any other disfiguration due to an internal defect and in spite of normal use.
- Any kind of manufacturing defect in the Nectar Mattress cover. This includes situations in which the stitching comes undone or when it’s poorly sewn, for example.
- The mattress is located within the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii)
In short, the Nectar warranty covers any damage to the mattress that the company is responsible for, even if this defect shows up after some time of use.
So, if a big indentation develops after a year of use, it means there’s a structural defect within the mattress.
Just to mention an important detail: the company offers a 365-night trial period, which means that you can test it out for an entire year and can then return the Nectar mattress – no questions asked – for a refund.
Not every Nectar mattress out there is eligible for Nectar’s warranty.
If you bought your mattress second-hand or received it from someone who had it before you (meaning you’re not the first owner), Nectar Sleep is not responsible for any defects. So, the warranty is only valid for the “original purchaser from the original purchase date”.
This is why you need to save the receipt.
Another important point is that you have to buy the new Nectar mattress from Nectar Sleep directly (on the website) or from one of Nectar’s authorized sellers.
If you’re buying from one of the sellers and want to be 100% sure you get the original warranty, you can ask Nectar to confirm the seller.
Some sellers are completely valid and trustworthy, but if you buy from them, you may have to communicate with them, not Nectar.
For example, if you buy over Amazon, you need to carry out all communication with Amazon in case something goes wrong. Mattress Firm has a 120-night free trial, unlike Nectar’s 365-night trial, but filing a warranty claim with Mattress Firm is quicker than with Nectar.
If Nectar Sleep has already replaced or repaired the mattress, and it has defects again, it is still under the same warranty as the original Nectar mattress. The beginning of the second (third, fourth?) mattress warranty is the date when you bought your original mattress.
Maybe it sounds good so far, but Nectar is known for customer dissatisfaction when it comes to warranties and returns.
Reddit particularly hates Nectar for the mattress quality and for being dissatisfied with customer support (one person ended up with five Nectar pillows after they were unable to send the right one). Not to mention fiberglass issues, various shady practices, and false advertising.
Just stick with me and I’ll explain.
Replacement terms
Here’s what you have to do in order to get a replacement.
Your mattress must be “continuously supported by a matching foundation or adjustable bed base with a proper bed frame sufficient to support the collective weight of the Mattress and user(s)”.
Basically, it is your responsibility to pick the right bed frame and ensure that you don’t go over its weight limits.
The bed frame also needs to have an appropriate base because, for example, a memory foam mattress doesn’t go well with wide-apart slatted foundations, while most platform beds are safe to use.
Hybrid mattresses are somewhat sturdier and could be used with a higher variety of bed frames, but you’ll be the safest if you use Nectar’s frames or frames with a design close to Nectar’s designs.
Your mattress must be used on one of such frames for the entire time you own it. This means you can’t store the mattress on the side, keep it on a broken base, etc.
Nectar will require you to return or donate the old mattress and show your purchase receipt, along with some photos of the product they might ask for.
Replacements are free, except if you’re returning a 10+ year-old mattress, in which case you may have to pay $50 for shipping both ways.
Exclusions
Here’s the part that gets most people confused.
There are many things that void the warranty or exclude you from being able to file a warranty claim. Read carefully!
- The warranty is void if the original mattress cover was removed at any time for any reason, even though there’s a zipper on the cover. Why, you may ask? This is their way of putting the blame on the user when fiberglass particles leak out of the mattress as a result of removing the cover. Yes, Nectar mattresses have fiberglass as a flame retardant!
- The warranty doesn’t cover mattresses damaged by any environmental causes (floods, etc.).
- It also doesn’t cover improperly used (or abused) mattresses, damage that came from not following the instructions (such as after being on a wrong bed frame), or any accidents that might have caused damage.
- You cannot file a warranty claim if you notice a change in the softness of the foam material as the new mattress breaks in. It’s considered normal wear. Even small body impressions of less than 1.5″ are normal, as long as the mattress still offers pressure relief.
- Another super-tricky one: comfort preference. Painful back, restless nights? In case the mattress doesn’t sag or have any visible damage and it still has pressure-relieving qualities, you can’t complain because it would count as comfort preference. Many people loved their Nectar for one or two years, after which it just became unsupportive and uncomfortable. Not a lot of them was able to return because there was no visible damage.
- Other signs of damage that void the warranty include burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage, or stains. It doesn’t matter if your mattress was never peed on; if it developed the common yellow stains from normal use, it will not be accepted.
- Of course, any mattresses bought from another person, or even a company which labels the item using any of the language that shows it’s a second-hand mattress, such as “as-is”, “preconditioned”, “reconditioned”, “used”, “returned”, “previously owned”, the warranty is void. You need to be the absolute first owner.
- Finally, if your mattress isn’t in one of the fifty US states, you can’t file a claim.
Does Nectar Warranty cover fiberglass exposure?
They pretty hastily added the “Do not remove cover” both on mattresses and in the warranty.
At first, it was just a card that came with a mattress (which, at the time, said that it had a “Washable cover”). The card said that removing the cover would void the warranty. This rule is the same to this day – remove the cover and say bye to the warranty.
Here’s what that card looked like a while ago before they consolidated their information. These pictures are from a Nectar customer who shared them on Reddit.
So, apparently, this “washable cover” was not to be removed or else you’d be risking injury or death.
On the other hand, some people had fiberglass leak out of their intact mattresses.
The tiny glass shards caused breathing problems and skin rashes, created asthma in healthy people, and ruined their carpets, bedding, clothes, and most of their other belongings.
However, based on their warranty limitations, all Nectar is eligible to pay if their mattress causes any injury is a full refund: “Nectar Sleep’s total liability will not exceed the purchase price”. That’s it. No matter how much you spent on fixing the fiberglass exposure damage, and all you get is $400 to $800, unless you are in a state that doesn’t allow such limitations, in which case you might get more.
Their “Arbitration” section of the warranty states the following:
In the event a dispute arises between you and Nectar Sleep arising out of this Warranty, such dispute will be determined and settled by binding arbitration between the parties, in accordance with the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”).
And then also this:
All arbitration proceedings will be closed to the public and confidential and all related records will be permanently sealed, except as necessary to obtain court confirmation of the arbitration award. The decision and the arbitrators’ award will be in writing and will include a statement setting forth the reasons for the disposition of any claim. Any dissenting decision will also be set forth in writing. The arbitrators’ award will be final and binding on the parties, and judgment thereon may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.
Probably this is why we never heard about any lawsuits on fiberglass exposure, and probably why only Zinus got sued over this, while other brands stayed out of the whole scandal. There have been other Nectar lawsuits (false advertising), but not fiberglass-related.
If you’re doing research on mattresses, look at how Nectar compares to Casper and Purple. Also, bear in mind that while Nectar has fiberglass, Casper and Purple are fiberglass-free mattresses.
Nectar isn’t the only one here, there’s a whole host of fiberglass mattress brands and some have been faced with lawsuits.
How long does the Nectar Forever warranty last?
The Nectar Forever warranty is supposed to last as long as you own a Nectar mattress.
For the first 10 years, the warranty remedy means replacing the old mattress with a brand new Nectar Sleep mattress whose value is equal to or greater than the original purchase price. You don’t have to pay extra if you get the more expensive mattress. You are also not eligible for shipping costs.
As for anything after the initial 10-year period, Nectar will do one of the two: either completely repair and re-cover the mattress or replace your mattress.
In this case, you’ll have to pay $50 for transportation costs to and from Nectar. If Nectar Sleep determines that your mattress is indeed faulty, they will waive the charge.
Nectar Extended Warranty
If you want to be able to get your mattress repaired regardless of those pesky stains and other accidental damage, you have to pay for it.
Those who purchase Nectar’s extended warranty can enjoy 10-year protection through Extend, a third-party coverage system that adds extra value to the warranty.
Prices and features apparently depend on the mattress model and size, so the following is what you get for a Queen-size Nectar Premier.
Nectar Extend 10-Year Accident Protection Plan covers:
- manufacturer’s warranty (this is the only thing you get in the basic coverage)
- protects against rips, burns, and punctures
- typical children/pet accidents
- damage that ruins the mattress structure
- stains from food, beverage, ink, makeup, nail polish remover, human bodily fluids, and more.
Your mattress will be either repaired or replaced, and you are eligible for multiple claims until the repairs reach the product price.
These claims are made through Extend, over their phone (877) 248-7707, or online at https://customers.extend.com.
You won’t find anything about the extended warranty or the accident protection plan in the FAQ or on the Warranty page on Nectar’s website, but if you start shopping and put a mattress in your cart, you’ll see the option to add the special protection plan for around $100-$300, depending on the mattress you buy.
Psst! If you contact customer service over the online chat and have them fill your cart, they can throw in extra coupons to make the purchase cheaper. Don’t tell them I told you.
How to make a Nectar mattress claim
You can contact Nectar by mail, e-mail, phone, or 24/7 live chat on Nectar website:
- Physical address:
Resident Home, LLC
Nectar Sleep
100 Logistics Avenue
Jeffersonville, IN 47130 - E-Mail: support@nectarsleep.com
- Phone: 1-888-863-2827
To file a warranty claim, you first need to be able to prove that you’re the original purchaser of the Nectar mattress. This mainly means you should have a receipt with you.
You must have used the Nectar mattress on an appropriate foundation and mustn’t have removed the mattress cover or abused the mattress in any way.
Any stains void the warranty (every mattress manufacturer has this requirement), so it’s best to use a mattress protector.
Finally, you might be asked by customer service to take photos of the damage. This is a standard procedure, especially in the bed-in-a-box industry.
FAQs
Although there are some people out there who love their Nectars, it seems that, on the whole, Nectar mattresses are more likely to sag within the first two years than many other brands.
Nectar claims that their mattresses last for 10 to 15 years, but the user experience shows us that the average Nectar mattress lifespan is closer to 5 years. As far as I’ve been able to find, they used to use better materials some years ago. Newer mattresses are not on par with the old ones, and as a result, they last shorter.
There’s a long list of Nectar complaints about the warranty and/or customer support. Maybe even more so about the mattress itself. Many people say that Nectar doesn’t honor their warranty, but at the same time, there are those who only have nice words about the whole Nectar experience. Apparently, those who own stained mattresses or who removed the mattress cover felt it was unfair that their warranty was voided. Still, getting a 1.5-star rating on Trustpilot doesn’t happen by accident. Nectar really had to mess up one too many times.
Conclusion
Nectar is not a company you can relax with.
You have to be alert for any signs of fiberglass leaks, talk to customer support which doesn’t give clear answers to your questions, and wonder whether you did anything that voided the warranty of this very frequently returned mattress which tends to sag after a couple of years.
While the Forever Warranty sounds great, it’s hard to get the mattress to last more than a few years, and in between getting poked by shards of glass and finding a comfortable position to sleep in, you’re more likely to give up on this mattress before they even get the chance to honor their warranty.
