Who should buy Nolah Evolution 15

  • Hot sleepers
  • Couples
  • Heavier-set individuals
  • Those who prefer a plusher hybrid mattress

Firmness

You get to choose between 3 firmness options with the Nolah Evolution 15 mattress: Plush, Luxury Firm and Firm. This makes the Nolah Evolution 15 mattress suitable for all types of sleeping positions.

The Plush firmness option of the Nolah Evolution 15 sits on a 3 on the mattress firmness scale and is best for those who sleep strictly on their sides. A softer mattress helps ease pressure off the main pressure points of strict side sleepers.

The Luxury Firm version sits on a 5.5 and has more of a medium to medium-firm feel. Not too soft and not too firm, this firmness option can accommodate all sleeper types from side sleepers to back and stomach sleepers. Bear in mind though that depending on body weight, a medium feel mattress can be a little too firm or a little too soft for some people.

The Nolah Evolution 15’s Firm version sits on a 7 on the mattress firmness scale is more suitable for strict stomach and back sleepers.

Because it’s a hybrid mattress, the Nolah Evolution 15 is also a mattress suitable for heavier-set individuals.

When it comes to motion isolation, we found the Nolah Evolution mattress to perform very well when we tried it out with a partner. Edge support, on the other hand, could be a bit better.

Construction

The Nolah Evolution 15 mattress is made up of 7 layers (similar to Tempur-Pedic beds which also have a lot of layers). All these come encased in a breathable and moisture-wicking organic cotton mattress cover that’s blended with ArticTex fibers that help keep heat away.

The primary comfort layer in the Nolah Evolution 15 is made up of a breathable Euro topper that features high-thermal conductivity quilting that not only provides the plush comfort that we all love in memory foam mattresses but is pretty cooling as well.

Here’s something a little different which cannot be found in a lot of mattresses: the Nolah Evolution 15 features a border gusset that allows heat to escape from the mattress.

As we all know, memory foam can be heat-retentive but Nolah has made sure to include all these little features that boosts the Evolution 15’s cooling properties.

Right underneath the border gusset lies a layer of Nolah’s own memory foam alternative called AirFoamICE that’s infused with graphite. In case you didn’t know, graphite conducts heat really well which in turn helps the mattress stay cool.

The next foam layer is the CoreComfort support foam that helps provide both pressure relief and targeted support.

The transition layer is made up of adaptable foam that’s more responsive and adds a subtle bounce that counteracts the sinkage from all the memory foam layers above.

The coil unit is made of HDMax Tri-Zone coils that’s individually wrapped. The coils are grouped into three zones that also provides targeted support, especially in the lumbar area.

Finally, the base layer is made up of plant-based foam that provides stability and durability to the mattress.

All the foam layers used in the Nolah Evolution 15 are CertiPUR-US certified. We did experience a tiny amount of off-gassing when we first unboxed the mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.

Sizes

The Nolah Evolution 15 mattress comes in 7 standard mattress sizes, including a split King.

It measures 15 inches in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and bases, including an adjustable base.

#2. Puffy Lux

Check Current Price | Best Tempur-Pedic Alternative for Side Sleepers

Puffy Lux mattress on upholstered bed
Puffy Lux

Pros

  • Suitable for side and combination sleepers
  • Pain and pressure relieving
  • Good for those who suffer from chronic pain
  • Contouring

Cons

  • May be too soft for some
  • Slight off-gassing

Our experience with Puffy Lux

Side sleepers are the highest percentage of the population when it comes to sleeping positions and the best mattress for those who sleep on their sides are softer mattresses like the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress.

Our more affordable answer to Tempur-Pedic’s memory foam mattress, the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress is a plush yet responsive hybrid mattress.

Featuring layers upon layers of ultra plush proprietary foam, I really did feel as though I was sleeping on a cloud.

While some people may not necessarily like super plushy mattresses, those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia will probably feel like they’re in heaven.

Who should buy Puffy Lux

  • Chronic pain sufferers
  • Side and combinations sleepers
  • Couples with similar sleeping positions
  • Hot sleepers

Firmness

Puffy gives their Lux Hybrid mattress a medium-plush feel which in our books makes it a medium-soft on the mattress firmness scale.

This makes the Lux Hybrid mattress more suitable for side sleepers and combination sleepers.

Those who sleep strictly on their backs and stomachs may not fare so well on the Puffy Lux Hybrid as the softness would cause their hips and backs to sink into the mattress, throwing their spinal alignment out of balance.

And all I can say to that is ‘ouch’.

Although it is a hybrid mattress and is technically able to provide enough support for heavier-set individuals, it just may be a little too soft for those who weigh well over average so bear that in mind.

If you fall within the heavier than average range and like softer mattresses however, then by all means.

For a softer mattress, I found the Puffy Lux Hybrid to have surprisingly good edge support thanks to the foundation support foam layer that surrounds the coil unit.

But when it comes to motion isolation though, if you share a bed with a partner that’s slightly heavier and larger than you are, you just might feel a tiny bit of movement.

Construction

Technically there are 5 layers to the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress but the 5th layer surrounds the coil unit. All these layers come encased in stain-resistant cotton cover that can be removed and washed.

The first comfort layer is made up of Puffy’s very own Cooling Cloud foam that’s a more cooling memory foam alternative. Plush and contouring, this layer provides that classic Tempur-Pedic bed feel.

The second comfort layer is made up of yet another proprietary foam – the Plush Dual Cloud foam. This layer gives the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress that distinctive sleeping on a cloud feel.

Out of all the Tempur-Pedic alternatives mentioned here, the Puffy Lux Hybrid comes very close to the OG NASA formula.

Slightly firmer and more responsive, the third comfort layer also acts as the transition layer. Made up of Climate Control foam, this layer helps prevent you from that dreaded sunk-in feel that comes with traditional memory foam mattresses.

The coil unit is actually combined with the base layer. The Contour-Adapt coils are individually wrapped to help with motion transfer. The coil unit in the Puffy Lux Hybrid mattress also helps provide support.

Surrounding the coil unit is the base layer which is made up of firm Core Support foam.

Aside from providing extra support, the Core Support foam also holds all the upper layers together for both stability and durability.

All of Puffy’s mattresses are made entirely in the USA.

Sizes

The Puffy Lux Hybrid comes in 7 standard mattress sizes, including a California King.

The mattress measures 12″ in thickness.

It is compatible with most bed frames and foundations, including a platform bed.

#3. Saatva Solaire

Check Current Price | Best Tempur-Pedic Alternative for Couples

Saatva Solaire mattress like Tempur Pedic
Saatva Solaire

Pros

  • Customisable firmness up to 50 different firmness levels
  • Suitable for all sleeper types
  • Suitable for heavier-set individuals
  • Good for couples
  • Luxurious and pressure relieving

Cons

  • Can be expensive
  • Not app-controlled

Our experience with Saatva Solaire

Share a bed with a partner who prefers a different mattress firmness level than yours?

No, you don’t need to buy his and hers mattresses, the Saatva Solaire mattress has just what you need (and then some, like 50 more somes).

Controlled via remote, you can adjust the Saatva’s firmness levels on either side to suit your sleeping preferences.

That’s right, you and your significant other will be able to sleep on the same bed, comfortably even with wildly varying sleeping preferences.

Who should buy Saatva Solaire

  • Couples
  • Heavier-set individuals
  • Those who suffer from back pain
  • Those looking to invest in a premium mattress

Firmness

The Saatva Solaire mattress has 50 different firmness levels. You read that right, F-I-F-T-Y.

Now, you might be thinking, surely there can’t be that many firmness levels on well, anything, right?

When it comes to mattresses, there’s soft, medium and firm as well as the medium-softs and medium firms and extra soft and extra firm.

That’s what we know. That’s what is common.

Think about it like blood pressure levels mm/Hg (which incidentally, is what Saatva uses as their form of measuring and controlling the Solaria’s firmness levels).

You get precise firmness every single time. You want it super soft, you got it. You want it rock hard, you got that too (but please don’t, your back will hate you). And you basically get everything in between.

As I’ve mentioned above, either side of the Saatva Solaire comes with remote controls on either side of the bed so you and your partner can choose whatever it is you need and prefer to suit your chosen sleeping position.

Unfortunately, the Saatva Solaire is not app-controlled.

This also means that the Saatva Solaire is suitable for all sleeper types, from strict back and stomach sleepers to side and combination sleepers. No one is left out.

When it comes to motion isolation, Saatva mattresses are some of the best in the game and the Saatva Solaire is no exception. Especially in the Split King, you virtually feel nothing at all.

I found edge support to also be exceptional on the Saatva Solaire mattress which is perfect for those who like to sleep closer to the edge of the bed.

Construction

There are 5 layers to the Saatva Solaire mattress.

They all come encased in an organic cotton cover that’s both breathable and moisture-wicking.

As with all Saatva mattress covers, the Solaria’s cover has been treated with Guardin, a botanical antimicrobial treatment that inhibits the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria.

The cover also includes a 3″ Euro pillow top with lumbar zone quilting that helps give more support on the center third of the mattress.

The mattress cover also has a Paladin flame barrier which is made up of a polyester and rayon blend. No fiberglass in the Saatva Solaire, folks.

A layer of natural latex is the primary comfort layer in the Saatva Solaire. Providing buoyant yet pressure relieving support, latex is also proven to be hypoallergenic and naturally cooling.

The second comfort layer is made up of CertiPUR-US certified gel memory foam that contours to your body for even more pressure relief making the Solaire mattress one of the better Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives.

A moisture barrier lies underneath the foam layers which helps protect the mechanical components below from any moisture that can contribute to bacterial growth.

Although technically not part of the hybrid mattresses scope, the vulcanized air chambers make up what would be the coil unit in a hybrid mattress.

These chambers are what controls the mattress firmness, which as I’ve mentioned, can be customized to your needs and preferences.

The chambers are also no-sink, which means it maintains even firmness all throughout the mattress for consistent support.

A reinforced power edge enclosure makes up the base of the mattress providing stability. This enclosure also houses the quiet air inflator and hoses. You won’t need to worry about any mechanical components sticking out of the bed.

We experienced no instances of any off-gassing with the Saatva Solaire mattress. All of Saatva’s mattresses are made entirely in the USA.

Sizes

The Saatva Solaire mattress comes in 9 mattress sizes, including upper-flex Kings and Queens.

It measures 13″ in thickness.

It is compatible with most bed bases and foundation including an adjustable base.

#4. WinkBeds EcoCloud

Check Current Price | Best Latex Tempur-Pedic Alternative

WinkBeds EcoCloud is very similar to Tempur mattresses
WinkBeds EcoCloud

Pros

  • Suitable for more environmentally conscious consumers
  • Cooling
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Provides responsive support

Cons

  • Does not necessarily give that true memory foam feel
  • May be too soft for some heavier-set individuals

Our experience with WinkBeds EcoCloud

Of course you know that Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made with memory foam. That’s their bread and butter. But what about a latex alternative?

Not everyone loves the sinkage that comes with true memory foam and what’s more responsive than latex mattresses?

The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress features 100% Talalay latex that provides both comfort and support than can rival any Tempur-Pedic mattress, all without that stuck in the mud feel. I, for one, liked that’s it’s a more responsive bed thanks to its latex and coil unit construction.

Firmness

The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress comes in one mattress firmness which is Medium.

On the mattress firmness scale, it sits squarely on a 5. This makes it suitable for all sleeper types, including strict back sleepers.

However, even though it’s a hybrid, the WinkBeds EcoCloud just might be a little too soft for those who weigh well over 250 lbs so if this applies to you, you just may want to choose between our other Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives.

Because the coil unit is what makes up the bulk of the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress, you might feel a tiny bit of cross mattress movement if you share your bed with a partner who’s a restless sleeper but nothing too crazy.

When it comes to edge support, I found the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress to perform extremely well, whether you’re sitting on the edge or even laying close to the edge.

Construction

There are only 2 layers to the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress but don’t let its seemingly simple construction fool you.

The comfort layer is made up of 4 inches of premium 100% natural Talalay latex. It is textured and fabricated into targeted comfort layers which means you get firmer support on your back and lumbar area and softer support on the shoulders and hips.

Latex is also naturally cooling and hypoallergenic, making the WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress a solid choice for both hot sleepers and those who suffer from seasonal allergies.

The coil system in the EcoCloud mattress also acts as its base layer with a bit of extra reinforcement from the Extra-Edge Anti-Sag support system.

Made up of recycled steel, the pocketed coils in the WinkBeds EcoCloud are tempered 3 times and help provide more responsive support to the whole body, from head to toe.

All these come encased in an organic cotton and New Zealand wool blend cover that’s both moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating.

The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress is certified by OKEO-TEX, GOTS, the Rainforest Alliance and eco-INITIATIVE.

Sizes

The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress comes in 5 standard mattress sizes.

It measures 12.5″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames and bases, including an adjustable base.

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

Financing

WinkBeds offer financing for all of their mattresses through BreadPayments.

Shipping, Trial Period and Warranty

WinkBeds offer a 120 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses.

The WinkBeds EcoCloud comes backed by a Forever warranty.

WinkBeds also offers free shipping for all of their mattresses within the continental United States.

#5. Layla Hybrid

Check Current Price | Best Flippable Tempur-Pedic Alternative

Layla Hybrid mattress alternative to Tempur
Layla Hybrid

Pros

  • Flippable – 2 firmness levels in one mattress
  • Active cooling
  • Suitable for heavier-set individuals
  • Pressure relieving

Cons

  • May be a bit too firm for lighter than average individuals
  • Slight off-gassing

Our experience with Layla Hybrid

Not a lot of mattresses contain copper which is known to be an excellent heat conductor as well as being antimicrobial.

The Layla Hybrid mattress is a flippable memory foam mattress that’s infused with copper which provides a healthier, more cooling sleep experience.

What I liked most about the Layla Hybrid is that it’s flippable, with two different firmness levels on either side which makes it a great option for all sleeper types.

Firmness

You get two firmness options within one mattress in the Layla Hybrid. Firm on one side and soft on the other – all you have to do is flip it.

Sitting on a 7-8 on the mattress firmness scale, the Firm side of the Layla Hybrid would be best for those who sleep strictly on their backs or stomachs since a firmer mattress would provide them both support and proper spinal alignment.

The Soft side of the Layla Hybrid sits on a 3-4 on the firmness scale making it a more suitable option for strict side sleepers or those who suffer from chronic and joint pain.

Being a hybrid mattress, the Layla Hybrid is also suitable for those weighing well above 250 lbs.

The combination of coils and memory foam are able to give them the support that they need aside from maximum pressure relief.

I found the Layla Hybrid to be pretty good at isolating motion when I tried the mattress out with a partner making it perfect for couples.

Edge support is superb in the Layla Hybrid and if you are the type of sleeper who likes to sleep close to the edge of the bed then the Layla Hybrid would be your perfect fit.

Construction

There are 5 layers in the Layla Hybrid mattress.

They all come encased in a super soft breathable fabric that’s moisture-wicking.

The mattress cover also features handles on either side for easier flipping. It is also removable and machine-washable.

On the soft side, the primary comfort layer is made up a thicker layer of copper-gel infused memory foam.

Soft and plush, it provides that classic contouring memory foam feel that helps with deep compression and pressure relief. As I’ve mentioned before, copper is an excellent heat conductor so the mattress won’t retain any heat whatsoever.

The transition layer is made up Max Air Flow support foam that features zoned SMT or Surface Modification Technology for targeted support especially where you need it the most. This same layer also has deep channels which provides more air flow throughout the entire mattress.

The coil unit is in the center of both the soft side and the firm side. Featuring 14 gauge pocketed center coils provide ample support for both ends of the mattress, no matter which side you decide to sleep on.

The coil unit in the Layla Hybrid also features 16 gauge edge coils which helps with edge support.

On the firmer side of the mattress, you get the same primary comfort layer and transition layer, only slightly thinner and denser than the ones on the soft side of the mattress.

All the for layers in the Layla Hybrid mattress are CertiPUR-US certified. We did experience a tiny amount of off-gassing when we first unboxed the mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.

Sizes

The Layla Hybrid comes in 6 mattress sizes and measures 13″ thick.

It’s compatible with most bed bases and foundations, including an adjustable base.

What to consider when choosing a Tempur-Pedic alternative

Choosing a Tempur-Pedic alternative is similar to choosing regular mattresses, with a slight difference – you have to make sure it lives up to the hype.

Comfort

First of all, when choosing a Tempur-Pedic mattress alternative, you need to ensure that the ‘feel’ is the same.

Tempur-Pedic mattress have that classic (and by classic I mean OG) memory foam feel that cradles and contours the body providing the ultimate pressure relief.

When choosing an alternative, make sure it provides the same pressure relieving comfort and support, albeit with a few tweaks here and there depending on your needs and preferences.

Construction

Tempur-Pedic mattresses come in both all-foam and hybrid versions.

Each mattress type caters to not only your preferences but most importantly your needs such as sleeping position and body type (which we cover more below).

All-foam mattresses can provide enough support for those of average weight whereas mattresses made up of a hybrid construction (be it coils or air chambers) provide ample support for those who are heavier than average.

And another thing, you do not have to get hung up on how many layers a mattress has. Sometimes, the simpler the construction, the better the sleeping experience.

Firmness

Just like shopping for regular mattresses, firmness is key to long-term comfort.

Firmer mattresses suit back and stomach sleepers the best while softer mattresses suit side and combination sleepers.

Mattresses that have a firmness level that falls right in the middle of hard and soft (which in mattress speak means medium) suit all sleeper types.

Pressure relief

You can’t think of Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses without thinking of pressure relief.

When choosing Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives, choose the one that can provide you the best pressure relief.

Pain relief

Tempur-Pedic mattresses not only gives pressure relief but also pain relief, especially for those who suffer from chronic pain and joint pain.

Choose a Tempur-Pedic alternative that would give you the same.

Your weight and body type

A person’s weight and body type should be taken into consideration when it comes to choosing not just a Tempur-Pedic mattress or any type of mattress for that matter.

Tying in with what I mentioned about construction, heavier-set individuals will get enough support by choosing a hybrid mattress while those who are of average weight can get the same support with all-foam mattresses.

Budget

It’s no secret that premium luxury mattresses like Tempur-Pedic mattresses also command premium prices. If you’re happy to splurge, then by all means do.

But a lot of Tempur-Pedic alternatives can cost significantly less than a Tempur-Pedic mattress and yet you still get the same benefits.

What features make a mattress similar to Tempur-Pedic

First and foremost, two words.

Memory foam… and then a couple of other things.

Memory Foam

That’s what makes a mattress similar to Tempur-Pedic.

But not just any any memory foam, PREMIUM memory foam.

We all know the praise that everyone has heaped onto Tempur-Pedic since its inception and that’s primarily because of their true memory foam feel which in turn provides contouring, pressure and pain relief.

These days though, a mattress that is similar to Tempur-Pedic can not only be made with memory foam but with memory foam alternatives and even latex as well.

Pressure relief

A Tempur-Pedic mattress alternative is not a Tempur-Pedic mattress alternative without providing any pressure relief.

Write that down.

Comfort

What goes with pressure relief if not comfort.

Sure, there are other comfortable mattress brands but they aren’t on the same level as a memory foam mattress like the Tempur-Pedic can give as well as its alternatives.

What are the downsides to Tempur-Pedic mattresses?

Just like with anything in life, there are downsides to even a premium mattress like the Tempur-Pedic mattress.

Cost

I’m going to cut to the chase here.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are expensive.

And if you’re on a budget, then buying one is completely out of the question.

Heat retention

True memory foam is notorious for being heat-retentive which as you know, makes for a very uncomfortable slumber (if you’ll even get to sleep).

Even more so than all-foam mattresses, there’s something about the construction of memory foam that makes it hold heat in for a very long time.

Sinkage

Another little tidbit about true memory foam that you need to be aware of is that dreaded sinkage that comes along with the contour and cradling.

That stuck in the mud feel. That feeling as though you are being swallowed up by the bed. Hard to move. And if that’s something you don’t like, then opt for a more responsive mattress.

FAQs

Why are Tempur-Pedic mattresses so expensive?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are so expensive because they are made from premium memory foam and they are the first mattress brand to be licensed to use memory foam that was originally only used by NASA.

Are PosturePedic mattresses the same as Tempur-Pedic?

PosturePedic are different from Tempur-Pedic mattresses in that they focus more on spinal alignment rather than pressure relief.

Conclusion

There are a lot of Tempur-Pedic mattress alternatives if you just know where to look.

For a fraction of the price, you can get the same mattress that can provide the same contouring and pressure relief as the OG memory foam mattress.

Next step: Try out the Nolah Evolution 15. We like it because it’s cooling, pressure relieving, and good for all sleeper types. It’s by far the mattress that’s most similar to Tempur-Pedic.
