Silk pillowcases and silk bedding sets made from quality silk are becoming increasingly popular. Not only do they feel good, studies have shown that they may offer benefits to the hair and skin as well. Hair breakage is caused by a lot of varying factors. Thankfully, there are also a number of ways to help mitigate and care for damaged hair. This includes sleeping on a silk pillowcase such as ones from Lily Silk. Although they offer quite a few different types of silk pillowcases, they are all pretty similar in that they are made from 100% mulberry silk. In this article, we talk about the Momme Terse Silk Pillow case with Hidden Zipper.

Sleeping on a silk pillowcase is not a new phenomenon. In fact, silk pillowcases were a staple amongst the perfectly coiffed housewives of the 1950s (through the ’70s). If you are a little too young to picture the reference, imagine this: women throughout the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s (although not so much by this time since the long, flowing hippie hair was becoming more popular) would painstakingly brush and set their hair in rollers or pin curls nightly, wrapped them up in silk turbans/scarves and of course sleep on silk pillowcases.
Why silk, you might ask? Because silk, unlike cotton, provides less friction, allowing hair (and skin!) to glide across the pillow. This helps keep the hair follicles lie flat thereby reducing frizz as well as keeping your hairstyle or blowout intact. A hairdresser worth his or her salt would always recommend using silk pillowcases.
Silk pillowcases, as well as silk sheets, are also great at helping skin retain moisture as it does not absorb moisture like cotton sheets do. This makes it a great supplement to your skin care regimen, especially if you suffer from dry skin.
Aside from the benefits to the hair and the skin, silk bedding just feels amazing on the skin. Soft, smooth and utterly luxurious. Satin bedding also feel quite luxe but silk fabric is an inherently more breathable fabric than satin. If you’re the type who sleeps hot or live in a warmer climate, silk definitely feels more cooling than any other fabric.
The LilySilk silk pillowcase comes shipped in its own cute little box and wrapped in delicate wrapping tissue emblazoned with LilySilk’s own logo. I thoroughly appreciated the attention to detail which certainly added to the whole luxury experience. From the get go, I can see why LilySilk is a favorite amongst beauty bloggers and fashionistas alike.
Upon first taking it out of the packaging, I noticed immediately how soft the silk pillowcase felt and its beautiful silk sheen. Made from 100% Grade 6A Mulberry silk, LilySilk’s products all have OEKO certification. This means that each and every piece are made without any harmful chemicals. Momme mulberry silk usually equates to real, authentic silk. Momme (pronounced momm-ee) is actually a Japanese word used as a unit of weight measurement for real silk.
The LilySilk pillowcase comes in two different enclosure options: an envelope closure and a hidden zipper closure. What I have is the one that comes with a hidden zipper closure. I can’t really say that one is better than the other. In the end, it all boils down to your preferences as well as the overall bedroom aesthetic that you are going for. I found the zip to be smooth with no stops or snags whatsoever which is a definite plus. In my opinion, you can somewhat differentiate between high quality material or something more low end if they skimp out on something seemingly inconsequential as zippers.
If thread count matters to you, the LilySilk silk pillowcase comes in 400 thread count and a myriad of different color choices as well as patterns such as florals, marble and stripes. I got mine in rosy pink, of course. If you want to personalize your LilySilk pillowcase, they also offer monogramming for a nominal fee which is a nice littler perk, especially if you want to give them out as gifts.
Lilysilk recommends that the LilySilk pillowcases be professionally dry-cleaned. If dry cleaning is out of the question for you then you can also hand wash or machine wash them using a neutral or special detergent. Do make sure that you only machine wash in the gentle cycle using cold water or lukewarm water. Tumble dry on low. Silk products tend to shrink if very hot water is used.
I have severely damaged, color treated hair and I usually wake up with the worst bed head known to man, even after a trip to the salon. Since I started using silk pillowcases though, my hair has begun to become less frizzy and I found that it tends to hold whatever style or blowout I had done the day before. On the (recently more frequent) occasion that I leave my hair to its own devices right after washing, I also discovered that sleeping on a silk pillowcase brings out my natural waves. This is why a silk pillowcase, as well as silk turbans and silk headbands and scarves, is held in such high regard in the hair care movement known as CGM or the curly girl method.
This is not to say that silk products are a miracle cure for any of your hair woes but they definitely do help. But a silk pillowcase, coupled with a hair care routine that is tailored to your hair type can make a difference.
When it comes to skin, I found that the LilySilk pillowcase helped my skin absorb whatever night cream I had on, especially when I sleep on my side or my stomach. As previously mentioned, silk absorbs lesser moisture than cotton does, thus allowing whatever topical treatment you have on to stay on your skin rather than your pillow. Another thing of note is that due to its smoother, softer surface, if you’re a stomach sleeper like me, you are less likely to get sleep wrinkles. Although temporary, sleep wrinkles can be annoying, especially if they are set quite deep. Dermatologists and skin care experts always recommend back sleeping when it comes to facial care.
Compared to other high quality silk products, the Lilysilk pillowcase with hidden zipper comes at a very affordable price point. Not cheap but also not overpriced.
Shipping was also pretty fast and I have not had an unpleasant experience dealing with LilySilk customer service staff. When it comes to customer experience as well as product experience with LilySilk, I have to say I am completely satisfied, although some other users have noticed that it sometimes takes a while for them to respond to inquiries.
