Our experience with the Bear Pro Topper

Containing the same Celliant technology and copper as their top-rated mattresses, the Bear Pro Mattress topper helps you sleep cool while also helping with muscle recovery. Celliant has been clinically proven to promote a more restful sleep and aid in quicker recovery (because as we know our body regenerates and recovers while we sleep), which in turn lets sleepers wake up feel more refreshed. This is the reason why Bear mattresses are so popular among pro athletes and those who lead a more active lifestyle.

The Bear Pro topper also contains copper. Known to be an excellent thermal conductor, copper is also naturally anti-bacterial. This helps keep the mattress topper free from any germs, microbes and even mold and dust mites, making the topper an excellent choice for those who suffer from chronic or seasonal allergies.

A traditional memory foam topper can retain more heat, especially when paired with a memory foam mattress. The copper-infused memory foam in the Bear Pro topper helps you sleep a little cooler because as we all know by now, true memory foam tends to retain body heat, which can result in a higher body temperature when you sleep. This can be an issue if you are someone who already tends to sleep hot. Copper helps wick away heat, from both the body and the mattress, allowing for a deeper, more restful sleep.

But memory foam mattresses – and a memory foam topper – do have their benefits. Memory foam cradles your body, offering optimum pressure relief from all the main pressure points in the body. The conforming feel provides overall comfort and we found the Bear Pro topper to give added comfort to a mattress that’s a little too firm. A too firm mattress can eat into the body’s main pressure points which can then lead to chronic pain.

By adding a plush mattress topper like the Bear Pro topper to a firm mattress, we found that it significantly changed the mattress’ firmness, turning it to more of a medium feel. We rate the Bear Topper to be a 4-5 on the firmness scale, making it a medium-soft to medium. This makes is suitable for all sleeper types.

As most memory foam mattress toppers go, we found that the Bear Pro topper did a good job of restricting our sleeping partner’s movements.

The Bear Pro topper measures 2′ in thickness and comes encased in soft, breathable cover that is unfortunately non-removable and not machine washable.

We did experience a tiny bit of off-gassing with the Bear Pro topper upon unboxing but this is normal, especially when it comes to memory foam mattress toppers. We recommend airing out the mattress topper in a well-ventilated room for a day or two prior to initial use.

#2. Saatva Mattress Topper

Saatva mattress topper
Saatva Mattress Topper

Pros

  • 3 options to choose from
  • Cooling
  • Responsive
  • Pressure relieving

Cons

  • Can be pricey
  • Some options may be too thin for heavier individuals

Our experience with the Saatva Mattress Topper

Saatva gives us three options to choose from with their mattress topper. Addressing specific needs such as sleeping hot, pressure relief and responsiveness, the Saatva mattress topper has just about everything for everyone.

  1. Graphite – Like copper, graphite is a well-known heat conductor and helps regulate temperature. Temperature regulation is crucial when it comes to those who tend to sleep hot. If you’re a hot sleeper and you have a mattress that retains heat, you might want to try adding a mattress topper that can help with heat dissipation. Saatva’s graphite mattress topper option is also made up of memory foam, which hugs the body’s curves and provides pressure point relief while also limiting motion transfer. The graphite mattress topper measures 3″ in thickness.
  2. Latex – For those of us who hate that ‘stuck in the mud’ feel of traditional memory foam and yet still want unmatched pressure relief, a latex topper would be our best bet. Made from 100% natural and hypoallergenic Talalay latex, the Saatva latex topper provides a unique feel to the bed – buoyant and responsive with just enough give around the pressure point areas of the body. Latex is also naturally cooling and if your current mattress needs a little bit of help when it comes to heat or if you sleep warm, then Saatva’s Latex mattress topper could also help with temperature control. The latex topper measures 1.5″ in thickness. If you prefer something a slightly thicker topper, you might want to look into the Zoey mattress topper.
  3. Foam – Saatva’s firm topper option comes in the form of high-density foam. Used mostly as a base layer in mattresses, high-density foam is firmer and denser than any other foam type. This makes for a topper that can add a bit of firmness to your mattress, especially if you need extra support. We recommend this topper to back and stomach sleepers and those who need more support from their current mattress. Side sleepers might find Saatva’s foam topper to be a little too firm. The foam topper measures 1.5″ in thickness.

While these three options offer varying levels of support and address specific concerns, we would classify the Latex and Graphite options to be medium-soft to medium with the Foam topper to be a medium-firm. This means the Saatva mattress topper would be suitable for all sleeper types, including strict side sleepers. We would say though that we found the Graphite option to be slightly more plush, so if you are looking to add a comfort layer to your existing mattress, it would be a good bet.

We found that all variants of the Saatva mattress topper to be good at helping isolate motion. We experienced hardly any motion transfer. We also found the elastic bands on each corner to be very secure and kept the topper firmly in place on top of the mattress.

All of Saatva’s mattress toppers are made with the same organic and all-natural materials as their premium mattresses and we experienced none of the off-gassing that usually comes with all-foam products.

The Saatva mattress topper comes encased in soft, breathable organic cotton cover that’s also moisture-wicking. It is non-removable and non-washable however so we do recommend spot cleaning as soon as any spills or accidents happen.

Sizes

The Saatva mattress topper comes in 7 different standard mattress sizes and can be used with any mattress brand.

  • Twin
  • Twin XL

  • Queen
  • King
  • Cal King
  • Split King

Warranty

Saatva offers a 180 risk-free sleep trial for their mattress toppers. It also comes backed with a 1 year limited warranty. All of Saatva’s mattresses and bedding products, including their mattress toppers are made entirely the USA.

#3. Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper

tuft and needle mattress topper on tuft and needle mattress
Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper

Pros

  • Good for those who suffer from back pain
  • Suitable for strict stomach and back sleepers
  • Pressure-relieving

Cons

  • Not suitable for strict side sleepers
  • Does not feature corner straps

Our experience with the Tuft & Needle Mattress Topper

Back and stomach sleepers need a sleep surface that’s firm enough to keep their spinal alignment in check but also soft enough to provide pressure relief. Our testers found that the Tuft & Needle mattress topper to be able to provide both.

If you are a strict stomach or back sleeper and your current mattress is in need of a little firming up on its top layer, the Tuft & Needle mattress topper could make your old mattress feel like a new mattress in no time. Those who suffer from back pain might also find that the TN mattress topper to be very supportive. If you are a back pain sufferer who prefers a slightly softer mattress topper, you might want to check out our top 5 mattress toppers for back pain list.

Made from the same CertiPUR-US certified open-cell foam that Tuft & Needle uses on their mattresses, the TN mattress topper is responsive unlike traditional memory foam which is great for those who detest feeling as though they are stuck when they move about the bed or switch sleeping positions.

Although not the most cooling mattress topper we have tried, the Tuft & Needle mattress topper still did a pretty good job of helping us sleep at a comfortable temperature. Heat retention is huge issue when it comes to all-foam beds but the open-cell design of the TN topper allows air to flow freely throughout, letting any unwanted heat escape. If your current mattress is active cooling, pairing it with the TN Topper may enhance its cooling capabilities.

Firmer than the mattress toppers mentioned on this list, we found that the Tuft & Needle topper still provided enough give and softness to help keep pressure off our main pressure points. However, if your preferred sleeping position is on your side, you might find the TN mattress topper to be a bit too firm.

Foam toppers are pretty good at motion isolation, no matter whether they’re thick or thin and we experienced barely any motion transfer on the Tuft & Needle mattress topper, making it a good choice for those who share a bed with a partner or a pet.

The Tuft & Needle mattress topper does not have any corner straps to hold it in place – what is has is a silicone beading bottom that prevents it from slipping off the mattress surface. We did find that it still did a good job of holding the topper in place.

Encased in a smooth, almost satiny cover that’s made from polyester fibers, the Tuft & Needle mattress topper looks and feels sleek to the touch. The cover is non-removable and non-washable however so we recommend spot cleaning immediately after a spill. Machine-washable covers are crucial for those who share a bed with their kids so we recommend you have a gander on the other toppers we have on our list.

We did not experience any off-gassing with the Tuft & Needle mattress topper although we did find that it took more than 2-3 days to reach its full height.

Sizes

The Tuft & Needle mattress topper comes in 6 different standard mattress sizes, including a California King. It is compatible with any mattress brand. It measures 2″ in thickness.

  • King
  • California King

Warranty

The Tuft & Needle mattress topper comes with a 100 night risk-free sleep trial. It also comes backed by a 3 year warranty. All of Tuft & Needle products are made in the USA.

Our experience with Lift by Amerisleep

During sleep, the body’s main pressure points are the shoulders, neck, hips and legs. One’s sleeping position plus a mattress’ firmness level determines comfortability or, on the flip side of the coin, discomfort. A mattress pad or topper that helps provide extra pressure relief is ideally plush enough to relieve any pressure and yet firm enough that you won’t be sinking in too much.

Amerisleep’s Lift mattress topper comes in 2 firmness levels that can cater to all types of sleeping positions. This makes it a good option for all sleeper types, including combination sleepers. The Lift topper also comes in 2 different types of proprietary foam.

  1. Comfort Lift – Geared towards side and combination sleepers as well as those that want to to soften a too firm mattress, Amerisleep’s Comfort Lift mattress topper is plush yet supportive. It made our mattress feel more like a pillow-top, which if you are someone who suffers from chronic pain, would probably be a welcome change. Made with Amerisleep’s Bio-Pur foam, a memory foam alternative that can be found in half of their mattress lineup, we found it to be body conforming but without any of that sunk-in feel.
  2. Support Lift – Made with Amerisleep’s Affinity foam that is found in the other half of their mattress lineup, the Support Lift mattress topper is firmer and is suitable for strict stomach and back sleepers. Those who may find their current mattress to be a little too soft due to normal wear and tear may also benefit from using a firmer mattress topper. This topper would also be a good choice for those who suffer from back or hip pain.

Both variants of the Lift by Amerisleep mattress topper are made with an advanced open-cell foam design that helps wick away heat to help sleepers sleep cool throughout the night. The same open-cell design that gives the topper a more responsive feel, allowing the foam to bounce back immediately while helping provide better spinal alignment.

The Lift mattress topper also features Amerisleep’s very own HIVE technology that can also be found in their mattresses. This tech provides targeted support for sensitive areas and reduces pain-causing pressure points for up to 49%.

HIVE also creates five comfort zones using a pattern with hundreds of hexagons. In the areas of where the head, back and feet lay, the hexagons are closer together. This gives the hexagons less room to expand, offering more support for these areas. In the zones where the shoulders and the hips lay, the hexagons are farther apart, providing more cushion and softness. Upon trying out the Lift mattress topper for even just a few nights, we found that it did indeed feel softer and firmer in areas where we most needed it.

We also found the Lift mattress topper to offer ample motion isolation when sharing the bed with a partner, provided they slept in a similar sleeping position.

The Lift mattress topper comes encased in Amerisleep’s in a soft, breathable cover similar to their mattresses. The mattress cover can be removed and machine-washed, a good choice if you share a bed with your kids.

We did experience a slight new topper smell with the Lift mattress topper but this dissipated within a few days of use. Also, the topper does not come with corner straps. You need to make sure that your mattress matches the topper’s dimensions exactly before purchasing. The Lift mattress topper also took around 4-5 hours to fully expand.

Sizes

The Lift mattress topper by Amerisleep comes in 6 standard mattress sizes, including a California King. It measures 3″ in thickness and is compatible with most mattress brands, including those with adjustable bases.

Warranty

Amerisleep does not offer a sleep trial for their Lift mattress topper. It does come backed by a substantial 5 year warranty. All of Amerisleep’s products, including their mattress toppers are made entirely in the USA.

Our experience with the GhostBed Memory Foam Topper

Heat retention is probably the biggest complaint when it comes to memory foam products. Body heat can work against you when it comes to temperature regulation. This is why a lot of mattress brands nowadays come up with new and innovative ways to infused their memory foam products with a wide variety of cooling tech.

Take GhostBed, for instance. Their mattresses along with their mattress topper are infused with what they call their ‘secret green goo’ that provides a 2-stage cooling effect for a deeper, more restorative sleep.

Made up of memory foam that features grooves, swirls and waves on its surface, the GhostBed memory foam topper targets the 5 main zones of the body, offering an even zoned support. We did feel well-supported from head to toe when we tried it out but someone who’s a sensitive sleeper might take some time getting used to its swirled surface. It does feel somewhat like an egg crate mattress topper, only jacked to the nines. In addition, the raised grooves also act as pathways for greater air flow.

True to its memory foam feel, the GhostBed mattress topper offers a body contouring, cradled-in feel. This makes it an excellent choice for those who suffer from chronic pain such as fibromyalgia. But also because of its traditional memory foam feel, it might not be a good option for those who hate that ‘stuck in the mud’ feel that memory foam is most known for.

We found the GhostBed mattress topper to have a medium-soft to medium firmness level, which means it is suitable for all sleeper types, including back sleepers. This also makes it a good choice for those who share a bed with a partner who has a different sleeping position preference than you do.

The GhostBed mattress topper comes encased in a waterproof, fitted cover that features GhostBed’s patent pending cool-to-the-touch GhostIce fabric that adds to the topper’s cooling capabilities. The cover also acts as a mattress protector and helps prevent stains from spills.

The mattress cover is deep-pocket, which means it fits both your mattress topper and mattress, even ones that are 15″ thick. The cover is removable and machine-washable. The topper itself is not washable and should be spot cleaned only. There are grip bands on each side that holds the topper in place.

As most memory foam toppers go, we did experience a tiny bit of off-gassing with the GhostBed mattress topper but this disappeared after around 3 nights of use.

Sizes

The GhostBed mattress topper comes in 7 different standard mattress sizes, including a Twin XL. It measures 3″ in thickness and is compatible with most mattress brands. It can also be used with an adjustable bed base.

  • Twin
  • Twin XL
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King
  • Split King

Warranty

GhostBed does not offer a sleep trial for their memory foam mattress topper but it does come backed by a 5 year warranty. The GhostBed memory foam mattress topper is made entirely in the USA.

How to choose a mattress topper

Choosing a mattress topper can be as daunting as choosing a mattress. You have to consider the same factors such as firmness level, type, thickness as well as your preferred sleeping position and issues you would like to address such as health needs and heat.

Mattress toppers help extend the lifespan of your existing mattress as well as helping to significantly alter the firmness and feel of your mattress.

The data from this review came from the r/mattress subreddit.

A few tips

  • Check your mattress dimensions carefully. There is no blind buying when it comes to your bed.
  • Choose your foam type. Most mattress toppers come only in foam but it could be memory foam, latex foam or a proprietary foam. The rule of thumb is, if you have a memory foam mattress then you should pair it with a memory foam topper and the same goes for latex and other types of foam.
  • Consider your main sleeping position. As we have mentioned above, firmer mattress toppers work well for stomach and back sleepers while plusher mattress toppers are more suitable for those who sleep on their sides or those who tend to switch sleeping positions throughout the night.
  • Health issues must be addressed. Chronic pain sufferers would benefit from a soft mattress topper. Those who need a little extra help when it comes to spinal alignment need something firmer.
  • Heat is the enemy. Always choose a mattress topper that helps do away with heat retention. Some toppers are made with wool. Wool is a unique material that helps you sleep cool when it is hot and sleep warm when it’s cold. Research what you like based on your sleep heat levels as well as the climate of where you live. If you live somewhere like Alaska, a mattress that’s heat-retentive might just do you good.
  • Don’t forget your sheets. Mattress toppers add considerable height to your existing mattress. You may need to invest in deep pocket sheets.
  • Mattress toppers usually add coziness to a bed, just like pillows do. If you’re looking to up the coziness factor of your bed, a mattress topper would be a sound investment.
