Here’s the good side: All of Avocado’s mattresses are made with certified organic materials such as organic cotton, organic wool and certified organic dunlop latex. The company doesn’t use any animal byproducts such as wool in the Avocado Vegan mattress.
If there’s one thing Avocado does not offer, it’s a pure memory foam mattress. Instead, they offer an all-foam mattress that’s made from natural latex. Most of Avocado’s mattresses though are hybrid mattresses that contain a layer of coils supporting the comfort layer.

But.. before you go out and buy one, it’s imperative to do your due diligence especially when investing on something that you will spend a third of your life on.
The following are some of the most common (as well as uncommon) complaints against Avocado mattresses.
Smell
A few people have complained that their Avocado mattresses smell a bit “barnyard-y”. The smell is likely caused by the all-natural materials that the company uses in their mattresses.
More often than not, organic and all-natural can mean funky, earthy smells.
Natural wool can smell a little barnyard-y. Organic cotton can be overwhelmingly earthy. Avocado uses a plant-based fire barrier that may also emit a natural scent.
Some people like it, a lot don’t.
When it comes to mattresses, airing the mattress out before use usually does the trick – especially when it comes to memory foam which is pretty notorious for off-gassing or that ‘new mattress’ smell.
All natural mattresses like the Avocado mattress however are an entirely different story.
These smells can linger longer than the new mattress smell from chemical-based mattresses so it is best to bear this in mind if you plan to purchase an all-natural mattress like the Avocado Green mattress.
Sagging
There have been some complaints that a few variants of Avocado mattresses are sagging with just a few months’ use, even with regular mattress rotation.
Are these mattresses that have slipped past quality control?
If so, just how incompetent can Avocado’s quality control be? We probably will never know but should this happen to you, return the mattress or have it exchanged immediately.
Mattress sag is a natural occurrence that happens to every mattress at some point in its lifespan. Now if your new mattress is sagging on the other hand, then that’s a major issue.

Warranty
Some consumers have raised concerns regarding what exactly is covered in the Avocado mattress warranty.
One such complaint talks about how Avocado has refused an exchange purely because the consumer used a bed frame which had bed slats that were too far apart. The warranty states that this only applies to larger sized mattresses such as the Queen and King size mattress – the consumer had a Full.

All of Avocado’s mattresses come backed by an industry-standard 25 year limited warranty (their crib mattresses have 10).
Return policy
The most common complaint about Avocado’s return policy is that Avocado only allows one type of product per household to be returned.
This means those who have purchased multiple mattresses can only return one.
The Avocado return policy is actually quite straightforward: you get a one year trial period for your mattress with a 30 day minimum time frame for returning your mattress.
The 30 day minimum is set in place because Avocado states that it takes a person at least 30 days to get used and adapt to a mattress which is absolutely true no matter what mattress brand you use.
Delivery and shipping issues
Shipping and delivery is the most common complaint when it comes to Avocado mattresses or should I say, long shipping and non-delivery.
A lot of consumer reports are peppered with complaints regarding the amount of time it takes for their Avocado mattress to be shipped with some even having to wait for months on end and others not receiving anything at all.
Other shipping issues are that the products get stuck somewhere in the shipping process while other consumers complain that when they check the tracking numbers, it appears that the item has not even been shipped yet.
Now, Avocado offers white glove delivery and in-room setup (as well as old mattress disposal) for a fee.
In theory, this seems like the most convenient (as well as safest) option but to be paying extra on top of paying premium prices for Avocado products can be pretty inconvenient and excessive for a lot of people.
And if you think that these consumers have not contacted customer service regarding shipping, they did, which then brings us to the next most common complaint.
Customer service
People who have complained about shipping also complain about Avocado’s customer service or lack thereof.
Some have waited on the phone for hours just to be told that nothing can be done. Still others can’t even reach anyone or don’t get any email responses back.
Here’s another thing about Avocado customer service: they do not have a dedicated customer support phone number.
To raise a complaint, you can only email or chat with them through the live support feature on their website and wait for a callback.
High cost
Now, premium natural mattresses like Avocado mattresses naturally come at a premium price.
This is a given.
And while a lot of people happily fork over the big bucks for all-organic, all-natural and fiberglass-free mattresses, some complain about the high costs.
Are they really worth that much? This is up to you, the consumer, to decide.
Too firm
Another common complaint we have come across is that people have found Avocado mattresses to be a little too firm.
While back and stomach sleepers benefit most from sleeping on a firm mattress, the majority of sleepers in the US are actually side sleepers.
Side sleepers and combination sleepers need a medium-soft to medium mattress. Those who are heavier-set can even go for medium-firm.
Sleeping on the wrong mattress firmness for your preferred sleeping position can be detrimental for your body and overall health in the long run.
Although adding a soft mattress topper can help, this is just additional cost and frankly unnecessary especially if you are buying from a premium mattress brand.
Avocado mattress lawsuit
There’s nothing that means complaint escalation like a lawsuit.
On April 28, 2023, Avocado mattress came under scrutiny that resulted in a consumer class action lawsuit.
The Avocado lawsuit alleged that the company was not forthcoming when it comes to their mattress production, particularly with their latex mattresses and other latex products. They were accused of false advertising.
The class action lawsuit against Avocado was dismissed on August 11, 2023.
