Our experience with Bear Trundle

Made especially for trundle beds, the Bear Trundle mattress features the same quality materials as their regular mattresses such as their Celliant covers and cooling-gel infused memory foams.

Celliant has long been touted as a miracle textile the when blended into items such as clothing, bedding and yes, mattress covers. It can aid with rest and recovery by converting body heat into infrared energy.

The Bear Trundle mattress comes encased in a mattress cover that’s made up of a Celliant blend that’s both breathable and moisture-wicking, making it a good trundle mattress choice for those who tend to sleep hot.

When it comes to firmness levels, the Bear Trundle mattress has a medium feel which is suitable for all sleeper types, from side sleepers to stomach and back sleepers.

There are two foam layers in the Bear Trundle mattress (and trust me, no one needs or wants a thick trundle mattress).

The primary comfort layer is made up of cooling gel-infused memory foam that offers the same contouring and pressure relieving properties as true memory foam but without any of dreaded heat retention.

The base layer also acts as the support layer in the Bear Trundle mattress. It is made up of high density support foam that gives the mattress its stability as well as durability.

All the foam layers in the Bear Trundle mattress are CertiPUR-US certified and are free from harmful chemicals and VOCs which means your little ones can sleep safe and sound.

#2. Saatva Bunk and Trundle Mattress

Saatva Bunk and Trundle Mattress on a bunk and trundle bed
Saatva Bunk and Trundle Mattress

Pros

  • Offers zoned lumbar support
  • Cover is treated with botanical based antimicrobial treatment
  • Suitable for heavier-set sleepers
  • Can be used in both bunk beds and trundle beds

Cons

  • May be too pricey for some
  • Low profile may limit mobility for more mature adults

Our experience with Saatva Bunk and Trundle Mattress

Not a lot of trundle mattresses come as a hybrid mattress. Most trundle beds are only made up of foam. But the Saatva Bunk and Trundle mattress combines the benefits of both an innerspring mattress and a memory foam mattress.

Now you might be thinking: is it really possible that I would not feel the steel coils within such a thin mattress?

And the answer to that is no, you definitely won’t.

The Saatva Bunk and Trundle mattress contains an eco-insulator pad (in addition to a transition layer) that prevents you from feeling the coils through the mattress.

Now that THAT worry is out of the way, I like the Saatva Bunk and Trundle mattress because they managed to cram in quite a few layers in what supposedly is a thinner than average mattress that can be tucked away when not in use. And all these layers serve a purpose.

First of all, there’s the cooling gel-infused memory foam lumbar crown layer that offers targeted support for (where else) the lumbar area.

The transition layer (which also acts as a comfort layer) is made up of polyfoam that offers added support as well as pressure relief.

Below that lies the aforementioned eco-insulator pad for extra security against any pokey things.

The coil unit in the Saatva Bunk and Trundle mattress is made up of 4″ recycled steel coils that are encased in foam for even more responsive support.

High density foam makes up the base layer which holds all the upper layers together for stability.

For extra protection, the organic cotton mattress cover is treated with Guardin, a botanical based antimicrobial treatment that helps inhibit the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria.

The Bunk and Trundle mattress comes in a medium-firm firmness level that can accommodate any type of sleeper including strict side sleepers.

And oh, it gets the same treatment as all other Saatva mattresses in that it does not come shipped in a box and it comes whole but not to worry – Saatva offers complimentary white glove delivery and in-room setup wherever you are in the United States.

Sizes

The Saatva Bunk and Trundle mattress comes in 3 standard mattress sizes. It measures 6″ in thickness and works well with either a bunk bed or a trundle bed.

Our experience with 5 Little Monkeys Original Memory Foam Mattress

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly made for kids brand name, the 5 Little Monkeys Original Memory Foam mattress can accommodate a full-sized adult and comfortably at that.

Thicker than most mattresses typically used in trundle beds, the 5 Little Monkeys Original Memory Foam mattress can not only be used as a trundle bed but as a guest bed as well.

Formulated specifically for children, the Original Memory Foam mattress contains premium quality memory foam that’s CertiPUR-US certified which means it’s free from all the nasties, which is crucial especially if the mattress will be used by kids.

Leaning more towards the firmer side on the firmness level spectrum, the 5 Little Monkeys Original Memory Foam mattress is suitable for growing kids as well as adults who are generally back and stomach sleepers.

The Original Memory Foam mattress contain a blend of different premium foam types that help provide comfort, pressure relief as well as help with proper spinal alignment – important for growing bodies.

The primary comfort layer is made up of high density plush memory foam that offers that deep pressure relief and body contouring that true memory foam is most known for.

Right below that lies a layer of high resiliency medium Energex foam that counteracts the sinkage that inevitably comes with memory foam.

The base and support layer makes up the bulk of the mattress, giving it its firmness. It is made up of high density foam that helps provide both stability and extra support.

We did experience a tiny bit of off-gassing when we first unboxed the 5 Monkeys Original Memory Foam mattress but this dissipated within 48 hours.

Sizes

The mattress comes in three standard sizes. The mattress measures 8″ in thickness.

Our experience with PlushBeds Natural Bliss

Of course we’re including a vegan option.

The PlushBeds Natural Bliss mattress is not necessarily a trundle mattress per se but like I said before, you can use any mattress on a trundle bed as long as it fits. And the Natural Bliss is possibly one of the best vegan mattresses to be had.

With certifications from (gosh, where do I even begin) Greenguard Gold, GOTS, USDA Organic, eco-INSTITUT, Control Union and the Forest Stewardship Council, the Natural Bliss comes backed by all the big kahunas and with good reason.

Made with a blend of Talalay and Arpico latex – the most premium types of latex there are – the PlushBeds Natural Bliss mattress contains nothing synthetic or chemical-based whatsoever.

The first comfort layer is made up of all-natural Talalay latex. A less dense type of latex, Talalay latex offers pressure relief just like true memory foam does, just with a bit more bounce and none of the sinkage.

The base and core layer is made up of denser and firmer GOLS certified Arpico latex which provides support and helps with proper spinal alignment.

Both latex layers are naturally cooling and hypoallergenic so although the Natural Bliss is an all-foam mattress, it does not retain heat like regular memory foam does making it a great option for hot sleepers.

The mattress cover is made from GOTS certified organic cotton that’s both breathable and moisture-wicking. What’s more is that PlushBeds uses a plant-based fire barrier so you can be sure that your mattress is completely fiberglass-free.

You get 2 medium firmness options to choose from: a Medium and a Medium-Firm. A medium mattress suits all sleeper types while a medium-firm mattress would work best for those who sleep mainly on their backs and/or tummies.

And yes, the Natural Bliss is suitable for both kids and adults alike.

Sizes

The PlushBeds Natural Bliss mattress comes in 9 different standard mattress sizes but for trundle bed owners only the lower sizes would work best (I mean, of course, right?).

You also have the option to choose between 3 different thicknesses: 8″, 10″ and 12″.

Financing

PlushBeds offers financing for all of their mattresses through Affirm.

Shipping, Trial Period and Warranty

PlushBeds offers a 100 night sleep trial for all of their mattresses.

The Natural Bliss comes backed by a lifetime warranty.

They also offer free shipping for all of their mattresses within the contiguous United States.

#5. Helix Kids

Helix Kids Mattress on wooden trundle bed frame
Helix Kids

Pros

  • Flippable – with two different firmness levels on either side
  • Made especially for kids
  • Water-resistant cover
  • CertiPUR and Greengold certified
  • Fiberglass-free

Cons

  • Not suitable for heavier-set adults
  • Slight off-gassing

Our experience with Helix Kids

Want a mattress just for the kids? The Helix Kids mattress is your best bet.

A hybrid mattress that’s flippable and designed for growing bodies, the Helix Kids mattress provides comfort, support and durability that can accommodate children from ages 3 to 12.

Younger kids (those who are transitioning into a big kid bed) need something firmer to mold growing bones while children aged 8-12 may need something softer since their pressure points would be more pronounced at this stage.

The Helix Kids has all of that.

Firmer on one side and softer on the other, the Helix Kids mattress features a flippable design that not a lot of mattresses have (unless were talking about the Layla Hybrid which, by the way, is for adults only).

The Helix Kids mattress is a bit strange in that its primary comfort layer is actually made up Helix’s own responsive foam (the memory foam layer comes later, I promise). This gives the mattress its firmer, more supportive feel for children aged 3-7.

Right beneath that lies the coil unit made up of individually pocketed spring coils that provides even more support as well as helping with proper spinal alignment.

The coil unit also features reinforced sides for kids who tend to move around a lot while they sleep.

Below the coil unit lies a gel memory foam layer that’s softer and more contouring, giving the bed a plusher, more pressure-relieving feel. This makes up the softer side which is more suitable for children aged 8-12.

Each side of the Helix Kids mattress features a fiberglass-free fire barrier for extra protection.

All these layers come encased in a cool to the touch, hypoallergenic cotton mattress cover that’s both water-repellant and removable for ease of cleaning.

The Helix Kids mattress is certified by both CertiPUR-US and Greenguard Gold.

The Helix Kids mattress comes in 2 sizes and measures 8″ in thickness.

How to choose a trundle bed mattress

There are a few key things to consider before choosing a trundle mattress.

Size

Check your trundle bed measurements. This is the first thing you must do before even considering buying a mattress.

Choosing the wrong size WILL result in unnecessary headaches.

Body weight

The heavier the sleeper, the more support they need.

A hybrid mattress or an innerspring mattress provides more support for heavier-set sleepers as opposed to an all-foam mattress so choose accordingly.

Material

This really depends on personal preferences which we shall delve more into more below (types of mattresses to use with a trundle bed).

Most people tend to sleep hot though so always choose a mattress that has active cooling properties.

Budget

Just like regular mattresses, mattresses used in trundle beds can vary wildly in price depending on materials used, type and brand.

Choose something that suits your budget and lifestyle.

Frequency of use

Will it be used daily or is it just for occasional use?

Mattresses that will be used regularly need to be durable and stable AND a long warranty period would do you a world of good.

You can have a bit more leeway when it comes to mattresses that will only be used on occasion. But remember, warranties are important.

Types of mattresses you can use with a trundle bed

Just like regular beds, you can use just about any type of mattress in a trundle bed as long as it fits. This usually means it has to be low profile enough to tuck under the bed.

Memory foam

Most all-foam mattresses are made from memory foam and these are the most common trundle bed mattresses available.

Offering more pressure relief and a unique body contouring feel, memory foam mattresses are a firm favorite amongst sleepers, young and old alike.

Bear in mind though that regular memory foam can be heat retentive so choose one that’s infused with either cooling gel, graphite or copper.

Latex

Latex mattresses are cooling, hypoallergenic and more responsive than regular foam mattresses. They are also more expensive.

If your child suffers from allergies, this type of mattress is ideal.

Innerspring

Best for those who need more support such as heavier-set individuals, innerspring mattresses offer maximum support as well being more responsive than all-foam mattresses.

Hybrid

Hybrid mattresses are a blend of foam and coils, bringing you the benefits of both. Responsive and pressure relieving, hybrids are suitable for all sleeper types and I do mean all.

How thick a trundle mattress should be

Trundle mattresses should not be too thick. Anywhere from 5-8 inches will fit most standard trundle beds.

There are also customized trundle beds and for those ones you can use a mattress that’s much thicker if you prefer.

What is a trundle bed?

A trundle bed is a type of bed that is basically 2 beds in one. A trundle can come either as a roll-out bed or a pop-up trundle.

Here’s how trundle beds work.

Roll-out trundle beds usually have wheels or casters on their bottoms while pop-up trundle beds have a spring mechanism that allow them to pop in and out.

Ideal for those who are short on space, for those who need an additional bed for guests or for those with children, trundle beds are a convenient way to save on space when you don’t have extra room.

FAQs

What size of mattress should you use with a trundle bed?

Most trundle beds can only fit twin to twin XL mattresses just like bunk beds although some trundle beds can also fit a full or a Queen mattress.

Are trundle beds suitable for adults?

Trundle beds can be suitable for adult sleepers, especially those that come in full or Queen sizes and are either innersprings or hybrids.

Conclusion

The best trundle mattresses provide the same pressure relief and support as regular mattresses do to help improve sleep quality of both your children and your guests.

They come in a wide range of sizes and mattress types to suit your needs, preferences and budget.

Next step: Try out the Bear Trundle Mattress. We like it because it’s cooling, pressure-relieving, and comes with a lifetime warranty. If you aren’t sure which mattress to get for your trundle bed frame, go with Bear.
