As the Texans say, ‘Go big or go home’. Texas King mattresses are oversized beds for people who need more than a little bit of sleeping space. Although not the largest oversized mattress size – that title belongs to the Alaskan King mattress (so far) – the Texas King mattress is still one of the largest beds to be had. We round up three of our top picks for the best Texas King bed. Our Editor’s choice is the Big Mattress Premier.
Our Top Picks for the Best Texas King Mattress
- Big Mattress Premier – editor’s choice
- Mattress Insider Texas King Bed – best cooling

Cons

- Needs custom sheets and frame
For a company that calls themselves the Big Mattress Co, you have to make sure that they really do have the chops to back it up. People who choose oversized mattresses like a Texas King mattress are either tall sleepers or those who share their beds with a partner and more than two children.
Specializing in handcrafted custom mattresses, the Big Mattress Premier comes in both all-foam and hybrid options.
Who should buy the Big Mattress Premier?
- Those who share a bed with a partner and either three or four children
- Tall sleepers
- Those who prefer oversized beds
- Those who prefer something taller than a standard King bed
- All sleeper types
Firmness
A customizable bed has to come with customizable options and the Big Mattress Premier can accommodate all sleeper types because you can adjust the firmness levels yourself. Ranging from extra soft to extra firm, the Big Mattress Premier Texas King mattress is suitable for everyone – whether side, back or stomach sleeper.
Because it also comes in a hybrid mattress option, the Big Mattress Premier is also suitable for those who weigh well over 300lbs. The combination of springs and foam – or in the case of the Big Mattress Premier, air pods – in a hybrid bed offer more support to heavyset sleepers as opposed to all-foam mattresses without springs.
Depending on the firmness level you choose, we experienced very low motion transfer with the Big Mattress Premier, making it a good option for those who share a bed.
Construction
The all-foam version of the Big Mattress Premier features CertiPUR-US certified plush contouring foam that’s similar in feel to traditional memory foam. But unlike the memory foam of yore, the plush foam in the Big Mattress Premier offers a little less sink, making it a good option for those who suffer from chronic pain yet hate that stuck in the mud feel that memory foam is most known for.
A little bit more responsive than the all-foam option, the hybrid version of the Big Mattress Premier features air pods in lieu of the usual coil unit that is found in most hybrid mattresses. Containing up to 80 air pods, the hybrid model provides enhanced responsiveness that adjusts to both your weight and sleeping position. This helps with both comfort and pressure relief. The Big Mattress Premier Hybrid also contains the same CertiPUR-US certified plush contouring foam as its all-foam counterpart, giving it a contouring comfort layer that’s also great for those who suffer chronic ailments such as fibromyalgia or arthritis.
One more thing we liked about the Big Mattress Premier bed is that it is made of replaceable components. This helps extend the life span of your mattress while also helping you save a little extra cash and what’s more is that it helps keep your mattress out of landfills.
The Big Mattress Premier mattress also features a soft, organic cotton cover that’s made from sustainably sourced materials. We also found that the mattress cover to be temperature regulating, which means that it helps you stay warm when you feel cold and it helps you stay cool when you feel hot. It is also removable and machine-washable – crucial if you share your bed with accident-prone kids.
We did not experience any severe off-gassing with the Big Mattress Premier although we did notice a slight, new mattress smell which dissipated quickly within a day of use.
Sizes
Aside from a Texas King, the Big Mattress Premier comes in 5 other sizes. It measures 13 inches in thickness and is compatible with most oversized bed frames, including adjustable ones.

Pros
- Cooling
- Suitable for heavier individuals
- Suitable for all sleeper types
Cons

- Will need custom sheets and custom frames
Known for their custom-made RV mattresses, Mattress Insider also offers oversized beds other than your standard King size bed. The Mattress Insider Texas King mattress is great for those who need a little extra leg room as well as for those who like to change the feel of their bed every so often.
Mattress Insider also offers 600- thread count sheets and corresponding bed frames for their oversized mattresses.
Who should buy the Mattress Insider Texas King?
- Those who prefer customizable beds
- Those who prefer different firmness levels
- All sleeper types
- Tall people
- Those who prefer a large bed
Firmness
Because the Mattress Insider Texas King mattress is customizable, the firmness levels are also customizable, simply by flipping the mattress over or adding and removing foam layers. Held together by Mattress Insider’s own ‘zip in place’ system, which helps prevent the layers from shifting over time.
We would classify the firmness level as a 4-7 on the mattress firmness scale, depending on the layers you add or take away. This makes it a good mattress for most sleeper types, including combination sleepers.
Because it is a hybrid mattress, we also recommend it for sleepers weighing over 250 lbs., as they need either a hybrid bed or an innerspring bed to be able to get the support that they need. Heavier individuals who sleep on an all-foam bed may find that their mattress could sag before its prime, making them susceptible to spine or hip problems.
Hybrid beds with multiple foam layers are pretty good at absorbing motion and we found the Mattress Insider Texas King mattress to be great at providing motion isolation. This is especially important if you share a bed with a partner, a pet or your entire family.
Construction
There are 4 foam layers within the Texas King mattress along with a coil unit of 6″ individually pocketed coils. These foam layers are made up of different types of foam including latex, gel memory foam, convoluted foam and a high density polyfoam.
We have tried countless other oversized mattresses by now and it is quite rare that we come across one that combines both memory foam and latex foam. We found that the combination of both adds responsiveness (from the latex) as well as that coddled feel that memory is famous for. This makes it a good choice for those who like their memory foam to be a bit more responsive. It also makes moving around the bed a lot easier.
Latex foam is naturally hypoallergenic and does not absorb heat as much as memory foam does. This, with the combination of a spring coil unit, keeps the mattress dry and fresh, making it a solid option for those who tend to sleep hot. The gel-infused memory foam also adds to the mattress’ cooling capabilities.
On the flip side, the convoluted foam adds both firmness as well as zonal support to those who prefer firmer mattresses. Convoluted foam means it has grooves and swirls which help provide support to all areas of the body that need it the most. This means the feet, knees, hips, back and shoulders.
The high density polyfoam also helps with the mattress firmness and should be the side that strict back and stomach sleepers must sleep on.
In between the foam layers lie a coil unit made up of individually wrapped coils that add support and responsiveness to the bed. Pocketed coils also transfer less motion than bare springs.
All these layers come encased in a breathable organic cotton mattress cover that’s removable and machine-washable. The foams used in the Texas King mattress are CertiPUR-US certified and are free from any additives, chemicals or toxins.
We did experience a tiny bit of off-gassing with the Texas King mattress but this can easily be remedied by airing your new mattress out in a well-ventilated room for a day or two.
Sizes
The Texas King bed is not the only big bed that Mattress Insider offers. They also offer Alaskan King mattresses and Wyoming King mattresses. The Texas King mattress measures 13.5″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed frames, bed bases and foundations including box springs and adjustable beds.
Durability
Mattress Insider’s 121-night risk-free sleep trial does not apply to their oversized mattresses. This is due to the fact that these types of mattresses are labor-intensive to produce and are usually made to order. The Texas King mattress does come backed by a 15 year warranty. Mattress Insider also offer custom sheets and an adjustable bed to fit your oversized mattress.

#3. Big Mattress Classic
Check Current Price | Best for People with Kids
Pros
- Great for kids
- Customizable firmness levels
- Comes in both all-foam and hybrid options
Cons
- May be too thin for some
- May take up too much space
- Will need custom sheets and frames
Another one by the Big Mattress Co., the Big Mattress Classic also comes in Wyoming King bed and Alaskan King bed options, as well as their Texas Kings.
Co-sleeping has been proven by sleep science to be beneficial for both parent and child. When you co-sleep with your young children, many believe that it creates a deeper bond. The Texas King experience provides ample sleeping space for parents and kids to bond, even in sleep.
Who should buy the Big Mattress Classic?
- Parents with multiple kids
- All sleeper types
- Those who prefer big beds
Firmness
A lot of Texas King mattresses or any other oversized mattress for that matter, come in only one firmness level. The Big Mattress Co. gives you the option to control the firmness level of their Big Mattress Classic mattress. This makes it suitable for all sleeper types, including strict back sleepers.
Since it also comes in a hybrid option, the Big Mattress Classic is also suitable for those who weigh over 250 lbs., since it could give the both the comfort and support that they would need.
We did find that the all-foam version provided a little less motion transfer than the hybrid version but only ever so little. This can only probably be noticed if you share your bed with multiple people (or pets).
Construction
Similar in construction to all their other King mattresses, the all-foam version features comfort layers made up of CertiPUR-US certified contouring foam and the hybrid version features an addition of air pods.
The contouring foam used in the Big Mattress Classic feels similar to classic memory foam in that it gives a contouring, pressure-relieving feel that feels like you’re being gently hugged by the bed. This makes the all-foam version a good choice for those who suffer from any sort of body pain – whether chronic or acute.
A bit more responsive than the all-foam one, the hybrid version provides a higher response rate due to the addition of up to 80 air pods. While also pressure-relieving, the hybrid version offers less sinkage and allows you to move about the bed much quicker. This is the right mattress for those who prefer a more responsive feel.
We also found that the hybrid bed was slightly better in terms of heat retention so if you are a hot sleeper, we suggest you go with this option.
The mattress cover is made up of natural, organic cotton that’s both removable and machine-washable which is very convenient, especially if you have kids.
As with all of the Big Mattress Co.’s other oversized mattresses, the Big Mattress Classic features replaceable components, extending the longevity of your mattress.
We did not experience any off-gassing upon first unboxing the Big Mattress Classic but we did notice a new mattress smell. This is normal and disappears after a few days of use.
Sizes
Aside from an Alaskan King mattress and a Texas King, the Big Mattress Classic also comes in 4 other mattress sizes. It measures 11″ in thickness and is compatible with most bed bases, foundations and frames including an adjustable bed frame.

What should be considered when buying a Texas King bed?
Just like when you choose a California King-size mattress or a Wyoming King mattress, shopping for a Texas King size quality mattress needs a few more considerations than just shopping for a standard size mattress. Of course, you need to take other factors into consideration, such as sleeping positions, body weight, health issues and firmness preferences but the 3 points above are the main factors to consider when choosing a bed named after the Lone star state.
