You can’t just put a regular full or queen mattress in a semi-truck. You need a mattress that perfectly fits your truck’s dimensions and your odd-shaped sleeping cabin. In this article, we tell you about the most common semi-truck mattress sizes, how to measure them, and how to choose the right one.

What are the most common semi-truck mattress sizes?

Freightliner Condo Couch Series42" 80"
Freightliner38" x 80"

The two most common semi-truck mattress sizes are 38″ x 80″ and 42″ x 80″.

These mattress sizes can fit most semi-truck sleeper cabs in the US, albeit with a couple exceptions. There are also some semi-truck models like Peterbilt and Volvo that require either a smaller or a bigger mattress for their sleeper berths.

The six semi-truck brands that we included in the table are the most used commercial trucks not just in the US but also in Canada and Mexico. For that reason, we will be focusing on them and the mattress sizes that fit each model’s specifications.

International mattress sizes

International Pro Sleeper semi-trucks have a sleeper berth size of 35″ x 79″, while International 9900i 72 Sleeper models have 42″ x 80″ berths.

Just to be clear, we’re talking about the International® semi-truck brand and not a set of standard international mattress sizes. International semi-trucks have two different sleeper berth sizes depending on the model.

A 35″ x 79″ mattress size is smaller than a regular twin mattress and it won’t give you much space at all. You’re going to have to sleep in one position all night. That said, it’s a few inches longer than a twin mattress which is beneficial for taller semi-truck drivers.

On the other hand, a 42″ x 80″ mattress is four inches bigger than a twin and it can provide ample space for most adults to get a good night’s sleep. The extra length is also quite nice since it gives sleepers more legroom.

Kenworth mattress sizes

Kenworth trucks can fit two different mattress sizes: 38″ x 80″ for the Kenworth T2000 and T680, and 42″ x 80″ for most other models.

Did you notice something familiar? Yes, the first size has the same exact dimensions as a regular twin XL mattress.

That should make it easier to find a mattress for Kenworth T2000 and T680 semi-trucks. However, most other Kenworth truck models have 42″ x 80″ sleeper cabs which isn’t a traditional mattress size.

42″ x 80″ semi-truck mattresses are will provide enough sleeping space for most truck drivers but they might feel a bit cramped for bigger and heavier individuals.

Volvo mattress sizes

The Volvo VNL 430, 630, and 670 models have 35″ x 79″ sleeper berths, and the VNL 730, 770, and 780 models have 38″ x 80″ berths.

One of the smaller semi-truck mattress sizes, a 35″ x 79″ mattress is narrower than a twin bed and it won’t give you space to sprawl out. 38″ x 80″ semi-truck mattresses aren’t much different. They have the dimensions as a twin XL mattress but they offer just enough room for you.

Peterbilt mattress sizes

The Peterbilt Unibilt Ultra Sleeper has a 51″ x 75″ berth, the 397 and 587 Mid Roof have 32″ x 79″ berths, and the 397 and 587 High Roof have 42″ x 80″ berths.

Peterbilt semi-trucks can fit the widest variety of mattress sizes. This includes both the smallest and the widest sleeping berths out of all the popular truck brands.

With sleeper berth dimensions of 51″ x 75″, the Peterbilt Unibilt Ultra Sleeper can fit the biggest mattress out of all the popular semi-truck models. Being just 3 inches smaller than a full-size mattress, a 51″ x 75″ semi-truck mattress can offer adequate sleeping space for most individuals.

On the other hand, the Peterbilt 397 and 587 truck models only have a 32″ x 79″ berth which is the smallest out of all semi-truck mattresses. This mattress size is six inches narrower than a twin mattress and it will provide just enough room for the driver to lie down and sleep in one position. You won’t be able to move around or fully stretch out your body on a 32″ x 79″ semi-truck mattress.

Mack mattress sizes

Mack semi-trucks such as the Mack Pinnacle can fit a 38″ x 80″ mattress.

This is the same size as a twin XL mattress and it will give you a snug sleeping space with little extra room.

Although Mack trucks aren’t as popular in the US as these other brands, they are steadily growing in number. Despite having a smaller semi-truck cab, a Mack truck makes up for it by having a decent-sized sleeper berth that can fit a twin XL mattress.

Freightliner mattress sizes

The Freightliner Condo Couch Series features 42″ x 80″ sleeper berths, while all other Freightliner models have 38″ x 80″ berths.

And last but not least is the KING of all semi-truck brands in the US: Freightliner. Their semi-trucks are the most popular and best-selling models year in and year out.

42″ x 80″ is the most common semi-truck mattress size and it provides a good amount of sleeping space for truck drivers. For other Freightliner models that can fit a 38″ x 80″ twin XL mattress, you should expect a cozier sleeper cab.

How to measure the dimensions for a truck mattress

mattress in a semi truck

What if the semi-truck that you’re driving isn’t one of the brands that we mentioned above? In that case, you’re going to have to measure the dimensions of your sleeper cab so you can choose the right mattress size. Measuring the dimensions for a truck mattress can be a bit complicated sometimes especially if you have an odd-shaped sleeper cabin.

That’s why we’re going to give you a few useful tips to help you measure the dimensions of any sleeper cabin whether odd-shaped or not.

  • Step 1: Measure how long the inside of your sleeper berth is on both sides.
  • Step 2: Measure how wide it is at the head, in the middle, and at the end. We suggest measuring 3-4 different spots to get the most accurate results.
  • Step 3: Measure how wide the bed is at the head and foot of your bed.
  • Step 4: Measure how tall you want the bed to be after placing a mattress on the sleeping berth. We recommend getting a mattress that’s not more than 10 inches tall so you won’t bump your head into the ceiling every time you sit up.

Once you’ve gotten all the measurements, you can either look for a truck mattress brand that offers specialized mattress dimensions or you can also opt for a custom mattress maker.

How to choose a semi-truck mattress

Choosing the right semi-truck mattress isn’t different from choosing a regular mattress for your home bedroom. There are a number of important factors that you have to consider to make sure you get a mattress that fits your needs and preferences. I’ve listed these factors below to help you make a choice that will benefit you and give you the best sleep possible even though it’s inside a semi-truck.

Size

Getting the right mattress size for your semi-truck is a no-brainer. You don’t want to buy a mattress that doesn’t even fit your sleeper cab properly.

To determine what mattress size to get, refer to the table above which includes the most popular semi-truck brands and their sleeper berth dimensions. If the semi-truck model that you’re driving isn’t included in the table, you should measure the dimensions of your sleeper cab yourself and purchase a mattress that fits its size.

Sleeping style

When I say sleeping style, I’m referring to your preferred sleeping position. There are side sleepers, back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combination sleepers who are prone to switching positions throughout the night.

Both side sleepers and back sleepers need contouring and pressure relief. Side sleepers need pressure relief for their hips and shoulders, and back sleepers for their lower back. Because of this, we recommend getting a memory foam mattress that conforms to the shape of your body and alleviates tension from sensitive joints.

Moving on to stomach sleepers, these individuals usually lean towards firmer mattresses such as innerspring and hybrid models. If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, you need a firm and responsive mattress to keep their spine and hips in alignment.

Lastly, we have combination sleepers who don’t sleep in a single position. If this is you, we recommend looking for a mattress that allows for easy movement. Latex mattresses are known for their buoyancy and innerspring or hybrid mattresses are bouncy and responsive. These are all solid options if you’re a combo sleeper.

Durability

Longevity is vital in a mattress. You should ensure that you’re getting a durable mattress that lasts a long time. When we’re asked for long-lasting mattress recommendations, we always encourage people to get a mattress with springs.

Although memory foam mattresses are highly durable due to their density, a mattress that combines both memory foam and pocketed coils is better at supporting heavier individuals over time.

Support

You need to get a mattress that won’t sag after a few months of use. Again, we recommend hybrid mattresses for a great blend of durable support and pressure relief. If you’re a strict stomach sleeper, a high-quality innerspring mattress can also give you the support that you need.

Cooling capabilities

Are you someone who tends to overheat at night? You should consider getting a mattress that features cooling technology. Our top suggestions are gel-infused memory foam mattresses and latex hybrid mattresses. These mattress types are excellent at dissipating body heat and providing extra airflow through the mattress.

Motion isolation

Although it’s a crucial factor for couples, motion isolation isn’t that important for semi-truck drivers who usually sleep alone. Nevertheless, some great motion-isolating beds are memory foam mattresses and memory foam hybrid models.

Contouring

Contouring refers to how well a mattress adapts to the unique shape and curves of your body. The best mattress type for contouring is a plush memory foam mattress. Memory foam beds will evenly distribute your body weight to alleviate any tension and relieve pressure from sensitive joints.

Price

Semi-truck mattress cost ranges from $300-$1000 depending on the mattress type and quality.

If you want to get a mattress that lasts 5 years or more, get a mattress that’s at least $500-$600. Memory foam mattresses are more affordable nowadays while latex and hybrid mattresses are a bit more expensive.
