Have you ever come across a firm mattress that gets even firmer when you flip it over? We haven’t either. But the Plank Firm Luxe is just that – a mattress that features two different firmness levels (firm and extra-firm) and is made especially for back and stomach sleepers. The company claims this mattress will help you achieve proper spinal alignment while still getting enough pressure relief. But how exactly does it perform? Read on to find out.

Our experience with Plank Firm Luxe Mattress
I was very recently given the opportunity to test out the base model Plank Firm – the Plank Firm Luxe’s all-foam counterpart – and although I was pretty impressed with its performance, I wouldn’t really recommend it for heavier-set sleepers due to the lack of extra support that only a coil unit can give.
Enter the subject of today’s review: The Plank Firm Luxe mattress.
Similarly built to the OG Plank Firm, the Plank Firm Luxe features up to 961 individually-wrapped steel coils that not only offer added support but also help with motion isolation and edge support.
And did it fare well when it came to edge support?
It sure did.
Which is why I recommend it to those who share a bed with a partner since it allows them to utilize a the entire surface area of the bed.
The Plank Firm Luxe also features a flippable design which has two varying firmness options – both firm.
While a firm mattress can sound uncomfortable for some people (looking at you strict side sleepers), it doesn’t actually mean you’ll be sleeping on a bed of rocks – you get the added extra support but still enough pressure relief. This is especially true for those who sleep on their backs and their stomachs.
There’s not really a lot of things I can fault the Plank Firm Luxe mattress for tbh except for the fact that it definitely is not a mattress any side sleeper should choose.
Firmness
You get two firmness options with the Plank Firm Luxe mattress: a firm and extra-firm which is around an 8 and 10 on the mattress firmness scale respectively.
These firmness levels are best for those who sleep either on their backs or stomachs and definitely not for those who prefer to sleep on their sides.
The Plank Firm Luxe mattress is also a hybrid mattress which means it can easily carry the weight (as well as provide the extra support) of those who weigh well over 200 lbs.
Cooling Test
We rate the Plank Firm Luxe mattress a 9 out of 10 when it comes to cooling.
No surprises here – a hybrid mattress is almost always pretty cooling, but the firmness of the Plank Firm Luxe amplifies this effect.
Here’s how it works: since you don’t really sink into the mattress like you would an all-foam mattress, you don’t get enveloped by your own body heat.
The Plank Firm Luxe’s pocketed coil unit also allows air to flow freely throughout the mattress which also helps keep your mattress cool.
Win win.
Plank also gives you the option to add a GlacioTex cool-to-the-touch cover for an additional fee, but I would only really recommend doing so if you sleep extremely hot.
Motion Transfer Test
We rate the Plank Firm Luxe mattress a 7 out of 10 when it comes to motion isolation.
Yes, the Plank Firm Luxe is a hybrid mattress, which can be pretty springy, but once again the extreme firmness works in its favor – you won’t feel a lot of motion transfer unless you share a bed with a partner who’s much, much heavier than you are.
Edge Support Test
We rate the Plank Firm Luxe mattress a 10 out of 10 when it comes to edge support.
One word: wowza.
Plank does not really advertise that the mattress features reinforced edge coils, but it would be safe to say it does anyway because I could lay right on the edge of the mattress and not even remotely feel as though I would fall off.
Having great edge support also means you get to utilize more of the mattress surface which is perfect for those who share a bed.
Pressure Relief/Comfort Test
We rate the Plank Firm Luxe mattress an 8.5 out of 10 when it comes to pressure relief.
Just because a mattress is super firm doesn’t mean it can’t provide enough pressure relief or be comfortable enough to get a good night’s sleep on.
Both sides of the Plank Firm Luxe may be firmer than most, but they still provide enough give that you won’t feel any pressure along your main pressure points but again, let me reiterate that this only applies to back and stomach sleepers.
Construction
There are 6 layers to the Plank Firm Luxe mattress. This includes both the top and bottom quilted layers that double as the mattress cover.
The top and bottom quilted layer features patterned stitching that helps protect the structural integrity of the mattress (i.e helps keep it all firm) while still providing enough pressure relief.
On the extra-firm side, the Plank Firm Luxe features a thicker layer of high density foam while the firm layer features a thinner one. Both layers provide support as well as compression.
The firm side also features a layer of supreme response comfort foam which helps provide added contouring and compression.
The support core of the Plank Firm mattress is made up of a coil unit that features up to 691 individually wrapped ascension steel coils that are not as springy as that of a typical hybrid mattress. This layer helps provide responsive support.
We did not experience any instances of off-gassing when we first unboxed the mattress.

Where to buy the Plank Firm Luxe mattress
The Plank official website is the best place to purchase the Plank Firm Luxe.
We always recommend buying directly from the manufacturer because it ensures that you get full customer service and warranty support. Buying from third parties often results in a subpar customer service experience.
You can also purchase the Plank Firm Luxe mattress on the Brooklyn Bedding website.
Conclusion
Firm mattresses don’t necessarily mean that you’ll be sleeping on a slab of concrete.
A good firm mattress like the Plank Firm Luxe offers both steady support as well as ample pressure relief.
Cooling and with fantastic edge support, the Plank Firm Luxe is a great option for strict back and stomach sleepers who are looking for a mattress that can give them the best of both (firmness) worlds.
