What I liked most about the Nolah Original Hybrid mattress is that it provided support and pressure relief on the parts of my body that needed it most.

Specific pain points that need extra support like your lower back, neck, and shoulders all receive special attention from this mattress (this is due to the so-called targeted zoned construction, more on that later).

Though it won’t provide the same deep compression as an all-foam mattress that’s made from traditional memory foam, this particular Nolah mattress still provides enough contouring and pressure relief for those who need it.

Traditional memory foam mattresses can not only be heat retentive, it can also be less responsive due to excessive sinkage but the Nolah Original Hybrid mattress uses proprietary memory foam alternatives as well as a sophisticated coil system that provides cooling comfort as well as pressure relief.

Firmness Test

nolah original hybrid mattress firmness

I find the Nolah Original Hybrid mattress to sit squarely on a 5 on the mattress firmness scale, giving it a medium feel.

Not too soft and not too firm, the Nolah Original mattress is suitable for all types of sleepers from side sleepers and combination sleepers to strict stomach sleepers and back sleepers.

Mattress firmness can be very subjective though. The heavier you get, the softer a mattress may feel and the opposite goes for lightweight sleepers so it is best to bear that in mind.

Cooling Test

We give the Nolah Original Hybrid 4 out of 5 stars when it comes to temperature regulation.

The Nolah Original Hybrid’s blend of proprietary foam and Tri-Zone coil system did a great job at keeping heat at bay. The Tencel mattress cover is also moisture-wicking and breathable allowing heat to escape.

Most Nolah mattresses perform pretty well when it comes to cooling and the Nolah Original Hybrid is no exception.

Hybrid and innerspring mattresses, in general, offer more cooling properties than all-foam beds because coils allow more airflow throughout the entire mattress.

This makes the Nolah Original Hybrid mattress a good choice for those who tend to sleep hot.

Comfort Test

When it comes to comfort, we rated the Nolah Original Hybrid a 4 out of 5 which is pretty high praise.

Comfort is probably the most important thing to look for when it comes to choosing a mattress.

Nolah uses a memory foam alternative as their primary comfort layer called Airfoam which feels contouring like memory foam without any of the sinkage. It’s easy to move around and switch positions on the bed.

Motion Transfer Test

We rate the Nolah Original Hybrid as a 5/5 when it comes to motion isolation.

Although the coil unit and the slightly bouncy Airfoam make for a springier bed, I found the Nolah Original Hybrid to be excellent at motion isolation when I tried the bed out with a partner.

This is partly due to the individually wrapped coils as well as the high density foam transition layer which helps absorb cross mattress movement.

Edge Support Test

Here’s where the Nolah Original Hybrid disappoints.

We rated the Nolah mattress a 2.5 out of 5 when it comes to edge support. Although it is a very supportive mattress, proper edge support is simply nonexistent especially if you’re a heavier-set individual

Edge support wasn’t the greatest on the Nolah Original Hybrid

I do not recommend sleeping on or close to the edge of the bed if you are the type of sleeper who is inclined to.

Pressure Relief Test

We give the Nolah Original Hybrid a 4.5/5 rating when it comes to pressure relief.

The Airfoam on the Nolah Original Hybrid helps keep pressure off the main pressure points, providing good and consistent pressure relief.

Like I’ve mentioned before, the Nolah mattress might not provide exactly the same deep compression as true memory foam does but I found it to be pressure-relieving enough to be able to sleep comfortably and not wake up with any pain on my main pressure points, even if I happen to sleep on the same position for most of the night.

Construction

There are 4 internal layers to the Nolah Original Hybrid.

These layers come encased in a soft Tencel cover that’s breathable and moisture-wicking.

The bottom cover also features a protective border fabric that enhances the mattress’ durability as well as providing a sleek look to the entire mattress.

The first comfort layer is made up of Noah’s very own Airfoam which they use in all of their mattresses. Airfoam is a high resilience foam that provides both contouring and pressure relief without any of that stuck in the mud feel usually associated with mattresses that contain regular memory foam.

The transition layer on the Nolah Original Hybrid is made up of another one of Nolah’s proprietary foams which they call their EverAdapt transition foam. It helps provide support and it also helps absorb any bounce from the coil unit below.

The mattress has 4 different layers: comfort layer, transition layer, coil layer, and base layer

The coil system of the Nolah Original Hybrid mattress is made up of HDMax Tri-Zone coils. These are individually wrapped and zoned providing targeted support in areas where you would need it the most such as the lumbar area and back.

The base layer is actually made up of a mattress pad that’s made of recycle fiber. It helps provide stability to the mattress as well as durability.

All of the foam layers used in the Nolah Original Hybrid are CertiPUR-US certified.

We did experience a tiny amount of off-gassing when we first unboxed the Nolah Original Hybrid but this disappeared within 48 hours.

Durability

Nolah uses high-grade, premium quality materials on all of their mattresses so it’s safe to say that the Nolah Original Hybrid is built to last in terms of durability.

External Resources: Learn More About the Original Hybrid Mattress

Our Original Hybrid review covers literally everything. We ran the mattress through rigorous data-backed performance tests in all the categories that matter most, and gave it honest ratings based on our own personal experience actually sleeping on it.

Conclusion

We ran the Nolah Original Hybrid through several strict performance tests and it more than held its weight in the vast majority of them.

Motion isolation, cooling capabilities, and pressure relief were all well above-average compared to similar brands.

The one weak point was edge support, so if you’re someone who sleeps near the extreme edge of the bed or likes to sit on the edge then this might not be the mattress for you (in that case, take a look at one of our approved alternatives listed above).

All-in-all I think the Original Hybrid is a solid addition to Nolah’s ever-expanding mattress lineup and a great choice for most sleepers.

Next step: Try out the Nolah Original Hybrid. We like it because it’s pressure-relieving, great at temperature regulation, and good for all sleeper types. It comes with a 120-night trial period so there’s no downside to trying it out. If you don’t like it, you can always return it risk-free.
