Our experience with Nap Queen mattress
For a budget mattress in a box brand, we were pleasantly surprised with how well the Nap Queen mattress performed in terms of giving us good quality sleep.
With the combined benefits of a memory foam mattress and an innerspring mattress, it’s the right mattress for those looking for a bed that can improve their sleep quality without breaking the bank.
The Nap Queen mattress also provides a cooler sleep surface (thanks to its cooling gel infusion) as well as pressure-relieving properties which is great for those who suffer from joint pain and/or chronic pain but are also hot sleepers.
Who should buy Nap Queen mattress
- Average weight individuals
- Side and back sleepers
- Those who suffer from arthritis or chronic pain like fibromyalgia
- Hot sleepers
- Those who are on a tight budget
- Those who would like to have the option to choose between different mattress thicknesses
Firmness
While Nap Queen states that their memory foam hybrid mattress sits on the medium-firm side of the mattress firmness scale, we found it more to be a 4-4.5 which makes it a medium-soft.
This firmness level is excellent for strict side sleepers (and can offer them superior pressure relief) and those who suffer from chronic body pain, but it may not be suitable for strict stomach sleepers, especially if they’re on the heavier side as this may throw their spinal alignment out of balance.
It is important to consider your preferred sleep position when choosing a mattress.
Back and stomach sleepers should go for medium to medium-firm mattresses while side sleepers should opt for soft to medium mattresses (a medium firm mattress might be a little too firm for those who sleep strictly on their sides).
The reason behind this is: the corresponding mattress size for one’s preferred sleep position helps keep your spinal alignment in check, which in turn helps you avoid any neck and back problems that may get in the way of you getting a good night’s sleep.
If you share a bed with a partner, you might find the Nap Queen mattress to have a tiny bit of motion transfer due to its pocket spring construction along with it’s medium-soft firmness level.
If you or your partner find it hard to get comfortable sleep due to cross-mattress movement, you might want to opt for something a little firmer such as the Layla Hybrid mattress.
We found edge support to be very good on the Nap Queen mattress. This is because it features an edge to edge pocket spring construction that helps reinforce the edges of the bed. You won’t find yourself in danger of slipping off, especially if you’re the type of sleeper who likes to sleep close to the edge of the bed.
Construction
There are 4 layers to the Nap Queen mattress. They all come enclosed in jacquard print quilted fabric that’s breathable and soft to the touch.
Right underneath the mattress cover lies a fire retardant barrier that helps keep the foam layers of the mattress from catching fire.
The primary comfort layer is made up of cool gel memory foam. Memory foam that’s infused with cooling gel helps do away with the heat retention that traditional memory foam is notorious for which a welcome feature for hot sleepers who still would like the pressure-relieving properties of memory foam.
Although regular memory foam can make you feel as though you are sleeping on quicksand, we did not experience that with the Nap Queen mattress, partly due to the mattress’ innerspring coil unit.
The transition layer consists of high density comfort foam that offers extra support while creating an extra comfort barrier between the coil system and the and the primary comfort layer. This layer not only helps with support but also helps keep pressure off the pressure points.
Unlike most hybrid mattresses, the base layer is made up of a coil system that features individually wrapped steel coils that also acts as the bed’s support layer.
Individually wrapped coils help reduce motion transfer unlike the innerspring coils of traditional innerspring mattresses that bounce and squeak with every little movement.
The Nap Queen mattress’ coil system also features a reinforced edge to edge spring construction that helps with edge support while also keeping all the layers in place and intact even without a traditional foam base layer.
All of the foam layers used in the Nap Queen mattress is CertiPUR-US certified.
We did experience a tiny amount of off-gassing when we first unboxed the Nap Queen mattress but this dissipated within a couple of hours.
