Our experience with the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s Bed

I’d say our overall experience with the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s Bed is pretty good – even if it took us forever to assemble.

Made from knot-free New Zealand pine, the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed is durable. Even though it’s marketed towards kids, it can definitely support an average-sized adult very comfortably.

Captain’s beds, in case you didn’t know, are a type of bed that features built-in underbed storage.

These frames are perfect for children’s rooms and for those who need extra storage space.

I liked that the drawers of the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s Bed are deep and wide, allowing you to store even more things.

The bed frame comes in two different colors to suit your preferred aesthetic.

But just like most children’s beds, there are limitations.

Since it only comes in two sizes, your options are limited. You also need to be prepared with your own toolkit because the tools that come with the bed frame are basically useless.

Ease of Setup

Yes, you do get a complete set of screws and an allen wrench, which I do appreciate. But unless you’re Mcguyver, make sure you also have a screwdriver on hand.

Unfortunately, the instruction manual consists more of photos than actual detailed instructions which is quite annoying – you’ll be wasting a lot of time trying to decipher the convoluted hieroglyphs of it all.

Max & Lily, if you’re reading, please fix this.

Ethan with all the components. Yeah, it’s a lot.

But once I figured out the technicalities, it was pretty straightforward.

Bear in mind though that this will take a good amount of time – in my case, it was close to four hours.

Also, once you receive the bed frame, expect it to be very heavy (I mean, it IS furniture) and I highly recommend that you enlist the help of a friend or two.

Appearance

It’s hard to find fault with the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed when it comes to appearance.

Setting up the Max and Lily Jack Captain's Bed
The Jack Captain’s Bed is a good-looking frame that’ll fit in with most decor styles.

The knot-free New Zealand pine they use is smooth and the finish can rival any higher-end kids’ beds at any time.

You also get to choose between two different finishes – classic white or a deep, navy blue.

Four drawers make up the base of the bed, giving you a lot of storage space, which is crucial especially when it comes to small homes or children’s rooms.

Construction and Materials

The Max & Lily Jack Captain’s Bed is made up entirely of knot-free New Zealand pine wood, one of the most common durable types of wood used in premium furniture.

Certified by the Greenguard Gold Association, the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed utilizes low-VOC finishing, which means it’s safe and hypoallergenic enough for very young kids.

The bed is made from New Zealand pine wood.

Since the bed frame is marketed more towards older kids, the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s Bed doesn’t come with side rails.

If that’s what you’re looking for then there are other bed frame options made by Max & Lily to choose from.

Thick wooden slats make up the base of the bed. While I found them to be pretty sturdy, I think they’re spaced a little too far apart – I wish they were a bit closer together just for my peace of mind.

The Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed also features a small side door for extra underbed storage. Who doesn’t love that?

Durability

There’s no doubt that the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed is durable and built to last.

These drawers are STURDY.

Even if it’s technically a kid’s bed, the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed can comfortably hold a larger weight capacity.

You can see in the video and picture above that it comfortably supports the weight of Ethan (a fully grown adult).

The Max & Lily Captain’s Bed is compatible with all mattress brands that come in a Twin or a Full.

Conclusion

The Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed is made for kids but is sturdy and durable enough to accommodate an adult.

Made from premium and high quality New Zealand pine, the Max & Lily Jack Captain’s bed features wide and deep drawers giving you more than enough storage space – that’s value for money especially at its more affordable price point.

I just wish it came in more sizes as it currently only comes in a Full and a Twin.
